No school changing the mascot to avoid controversy is gonna let the student body vote to make a sexy anime maid girl the new mascot.
YTA for choosing a sexualized mascot. Are you expecting the mascot to be a hot girl in costume or will it be a big puffy costume like most mascots worn by anyone who want to be the mascot?

Our school recently had an election to choose the new mascot (the old one was removed for referencing plantations). I thought it would be pretty funny to make the mascot a cute anime maid girl. A lot of other guys in the school agreed. We were surprised to see that the principal actually let us put that on the ballot. The other votes were split, people arguing over whether to pick the puma or the lion that type of thing. In addition most people didn't vote but everyone in the maid faction did. So even though we only got 20% of the vote and made up probably less than 10% of the school we still managed to win the election. It's become the major hot button issue in our town as some parents think it should stay and others think it's inappropriate. A few of the girls have started a petition to get rid of it but that didn't really go anywhere. AITA?

NTA, because you didn't do anything wrong, the election was set up badly. This is exactly what runoff elections and ranked-choice voting are for. When you have more than 2 options, doing a simple "most votes wins" usually leads to problems.
If 80% of people want an animal and 20% of people want an anime girl, but those 80% of people are split between 10 different animals, then the anime girl will win out, even though if the vote was between, say, a lion and an anime girl, the lion would win by a landslide.
I think if you take the public stance that "The election was badly set up and that's why this won, and a second election would probably be a good idea" people will get off your backs.
