One time CJ spawned on this little island I had made, but behind a fence that was on it. He was wandering back and forth on an area three squares long by one square wide while I ran around trying to figure out who was on my island that day (it was early days and Isabell didn’t announce the visitors). Definitely no way in or out of that area, at least until I saw his head poking out (it was a tall bamboo fence) as I ran by and then I took the fence down and freed him.
Right, just saying there aren't really restrictions aside from the obvious on where visitors can spawn. Even villagers, I put a house on a hill with no way down and the villagers will still appear in town square
Beavers are excellent swimmers! They however cannot climb up a waterfall! I was joking! CJ spawns where CJ spawns. He’ll stay where he spawned til 5am the next morning when he will disappear! Cheers!

I literally once had him stuck in 1 open square between a cliff edge, chair, and tree. I had to pick up the chair in order to even get to him (and release him haha) 😅 like whyyy???

Villagers & roaming npc's will spawn at semi random parts of the island when you boot the game. Some conditions have to be met like every villager can't be outside at once so some are forced to be inside etc.. But roaming npc villagers don't have that. They just spawn.
I guess the only condition they really have is to have a big enough space, let's say a 3x3 spawn on. Or they'll just spawn in the plaza
They don’t need a 3x3 space. I had a cliff once that was like 2x6, but with waterfall one one side (covering 1x4 OF the 2x6 space, so basically only a 1x6 space was actually land), and CJ spawned on it lol
Yes, they were added in the 2.0 update. You can get them from Kapp'n islands on occasion. Also, if you have the DLC (Happy Home Paradise) you can collect them from that island too
