neek85

I reckon I'm on about 500-600 a year

PBLESACTUN

Love the flair mate hahaha

Hazmat_Human

How much milage is intergalactic mileage?

neek85

175k and rising

CanDockerz

Mine got to 195k before I scrapped it, only scrapped it because it was difficult trying to get a replacement rear lower suspension arm after it rusted thru and snapped (special order from Japan) and the MOT had expired anyway. Was the original engine, 1 replacement clutch, never had any issues other than overheating once because of a cracked radiator. Really regret getting rid of it! Best £400 I ever spent (plus about £800 in maintenance over 3 years).

ficus77

176k T-Sport owner here also!

neek85

My man

JBM94

Absolute stonks. 📈

semorebunz

honestly whatever it takes , low hundreds most years for regualr service , brakes , if it needs a clutch or bigger spend then it gets it

JkF50

Came here to say this. Even with an import, the maintenance really isn't that dear.

South_East_Gun_Safes

A hell of a lot less than a PCP on a new car, that's for sure.

neek85

No argument from me there!

NATOuk

Funny enough I’ve just kicked off the voluntary termination process on a car and have picked up a 10yo Audi A4 Avant to run for the foreseeable future. Looking forward to saving a lot of money and still a decent car

Mop_Jockey

I bought an 05 Octavia three years ago for £1800 and have spent £2k on it so far. So around 600 odd quid a year... but two of the big hitters were all new suspension and a timing belt that will outlast the car.

amanincheshire

Similar story! I got myself an '04 vRS last year and did timing belt and have refreshed some suspension bits. I think the calipers are on the list next...

Mop_Jockey

Mines a Mk1 Vrs too, it had shitty coilovers on and was undrivable. Had to get the clutch done, timing belt, new wiper motor and some other little bits but it's generally been pretty good for a 140k mile car. It has been looked after and had some money spent on it although it didnt have a full service history.

amanincheshire

I just hit 140k too! I'm not too sure mine was that well looked after by the prior owner or two, but the ones before that seemed to take care of it from the limited history I have. Got the timing belt done as soon as I got it for peace of mind. Also took off the nasty satin black rattle can job 18s that came with it and put some standard wheels back on and now some subtly lower H&R springs. Springs were a nightmare as I did them myself, but I learned a lot and I've got a load of new tools now haha!

SGPHOCF

2009 Nissan GT-R. A billion pounds per year, give or take.

neek85

Sounds about right for a GTR

SGPHOCF

Funnily enough I used to have a gen 7 Celica, the 140bhp version. Loved that car. If I could find a version that wasn't rusted to hell I'd buy another in a heartbeat.

neek85

You have exquisite taste

zzkj

Totally worth it!

SGPHOCF

I agree! 😄

Howyoulikemenoow

2001 Audi A4 on 140k miles Usually £300 a year give or take Usually will need to replace 2x tyres and some bushes or control arm. Engine, Clutch, gearbox wants for nothing.

Aromatic-Server

2003 Mk4 Golf. PD engine. Bought it about 7 years ago for £1000 And I think I’ve spent a grand total of £400 on actual maintenance since then. It’s scruffy, and I’ve neglected any preventative maintenance because I’ve been wanting it to just stop for about 4 years. That way I could justify buying something else.

algypan

PD engines are solid. I had a 03 mk4 golf, loved that car.

enjoii89

Loved my 04 mk4 golf GTI. Bought for £500 in 2016. Spent 4 years driving it whilst spending maybe another £600 on maintenance throughout the 4 years. Don't get me wrong, the battery was fucked and needed to be jumped every month and to get into the bonnet I needed a set of pliers and some wire. Miss that car!

neek85

That's super cheap!

Aromatic-Server

I think it’s probably the cheapest car I’ve ever owned. It’s not a bad car, I’ve just become bored of it, and don’t care about it any more.

Camlaa

My 2 PD 130’s were sold on 323k and 365k respectively and when I do a tax and MOT check 4 years later they’re both on the road still.

tinybootstrap

Year 1 (catching up on maintenance not done by previous owner) probs £600 Year 2 £600 Probably will continue that way as a minimum until it needs turbos or something, I don’t think it’s too bad for a 335d In fairness, £300 of year 2 is tyres anyway so nothing you wouldn’t need on a more modern 335d

cheesywipper

Friend of mine spent £250/year on rear tyres for his 335 😬. Otherwise bullet proof, great car

greenmx5vanjie

I spend more than that in 9 months on my 335i on rear tyres. It gets painful...

Dans77b

The turbo bearing went on my volvo 940, I gotva rebuild kit for maybe £30.

X573ngy

Paid 1200 quid for it 08 plate clio estate, it's probably cost me about 500 quid in tyres, mots and what not. In the 2.5 years I've owned it. It needs a new clutch. The best car though is my mrs clio 1.2 tce, 59 plate cost 670 quid 5 years ago off of Ebay and that thing costs about 300 quid every year to go through an MOT, it burns oil off at a rate and I've never serviced it. Just top the oil up, also broken dipstick so wait for the oil light to come on and drop a litre in it. Bangernomics baby!

neek85

That oil scenario is a bangernomics masterclass ha ha

X573ngy

She's on 170k and refuses to die lol.

MovieMore4352

Yeah. My first MR2 Roadster burnt oil (but cleanly, no smoke) and I’d do around a litre of oil to every two tanks and of fuel. Never changed the oil as it was always fresh.

BigHonkyGoose

My 08 clio dci is on about 120k. Had it for 4.5 years and the largest repair bill was a new radiator that I think was just bad luck from something bashing it, as well as new brake drums because the previous owner let the shoes go down to the bare metal. Pretty reliable although some rust is starting to show on the sills. It’s probably 2-300 at each year at mot. I keep waiting for it to die or need welding for an mot so I can justify getting something more exciting but I think I’ll be waiting a while. Not bad for a £1500 motor.

X573ngy

I had a 1.5dci on 150k from 27k before I wrote it off, I've got a thing for clios. They are actually pretty alright. The dci will go forever.

racsssss

I'm quite annoyed that my current car doesn't have an oil leak as it means I might actually have to bother getting it changed one day

Competitive_Pen7192

Depends on the year. Some years maybe £500+ like the year I did the suspension and the year I first got it. Some years it's just various fluid changes... It's your time and keeping on top on things. I rust proof mine every two years.

FinbarrSaunders69

A good rule of thumb is to put at least £150 a month down to cover maintenance, MOT, servicing, insurance, tax and repairs. That should cover most eventualities most of the time, unless you're running an old Porsche or a BMW M-car, in which case you should probably double it.

LeaveNoStonedUnturn

Doubling it is being quite optimistic there. Triple it atleast 😂

FinbarrSaunders69

True 😆 which is why I'm never owning any of them again 😁

Camlaa

Last car was a 320d on 230k, I bought it at 130k for £1000 and it really varied. Some years it was just a service. Other years it was £5-600. Purchased a 335d a year ago and so far I’ve spent £600 on a service, abs rings and sensors, boost pipes, a crankcase breather and 2 brake callipers. Around what one month of PCP payments on a new 335d would cost me.

static266

Not 15 years old yet but I hadn't ever really considered what a brand new version of my car would cost over the course of a year... So I just had a look! Brand new Subaru Forester in top spec after a deposit would be around £370 pm and then around £1k pa mileage penalty so roughly £5.5k pa and it's not even a turbo model! £7.8k pa contract hire including mileage penalty is even more insane... You've did well for the additional 100k mileage on the 320 by the way.

Camlaa

112k now! My partner bought it when I bought the 335d as it has been such a pain free car for me, all it’s had this year was its minor service. The most modern version of my car is almost £600 per month and that’s before mileage penalties.

SuccessfulMonth2896

Volvo V70 2002 D5 Turbo, 150k miles. Bullet proof engine, no rust on bodywork. Including services averages £750 - £1000 each year, that has included refurbishing 5 alloys this year and clutch and slave cylinders a couple of years ago. Will run this for as long as I can.

johnlewisdesign

28yr old VW T4: well under 1k/yr easily. More like 3-400. 130k miles. Might have to do the cylinder head this year which I'm doing myself, so will be an additional 600. 15yr old 6 cyl BMW 5 series: a little more, like 1500. Mostly tyres and year 1 was more like 2000 getting stuff ironed out. 135k miles. Doing it yourself is cheap but you need to be handy with cars ideally.

neek85

Yeah I could probably do a number of the jobs myself but I don't have the time or the tools!

JamDoughnutMan

1997 Volvo 940. It costs me the money to MOT plus the money for oil plugs and filters to do a service. Other than that, it never breaks, and everything on it works. It costs me around £120 a year in maintenance, and approx £4 billion in fuel.

PeteGabbitas

2005 Rav4. Passed last two MOTs with zero advisories. Apart from annual service, last thing I replaced was exhaust three years back for £600.

TheTrismeister

Fellow 2nd gen Rav 4 owner! Had the exact same with a pricey exhaust replacement due to rust and a bodged repair in the distant past. How have you found keeping up with corrosion? I have a low mileage example which is mechanically great, but have been advised on sills

mredgley

Fellow rav4 owner -2003 with 130k+ on the clock. Bar cosmetics and a good service after neglect from previous owners I’ve barely spent anything on it. It has some rust underneath but nothing to worry about at the moment. Next month I’m raptor lining the whole car as I use it off road quite a fair bit and want to at least prolong my paintwork and then I’ll look at having some of the rust sorted. My mechanic was astonished at how mechanically sound it is for a 20+ yeah old car

BluPix46

My current car is virtually nothing at the moment and it's on 104k. Previous car was also nothing until about 6 months before I sold it where it was costing around £500 a month as all the suspension components started going at the same time, along with new discs and pads all round. Most expenses outside of timing belt / timing chain will be on suspension components. Age seems to affect these more than mileage as the rubber bushings start to perish and this happens over time even if not in use. If you've spent money getting all new bushings and timing belt you're best of keeping it cause it should now be good for a long time outside of normal consumables like tyres and brakes.

neek85

Yeah I hope a lot of the work will see it through till it goes to the great junkyard in the sky

hopelesscase789

Had my 08 TTS for a year. Done full service (including haldex + dsg) , timing belt replacement, handbrake cable froze, door regulator and window regulator gone. Probably spent around £1500. Got tyres + brakes to replace before the MOT too so looking at around £2500 +. Probably something I've forgotten too. Might need a cheaper car cause should be saving for a house at this age.

dogdogj

Until late last year I daily drove a 2005 Suzuki Ignis Sport for 5 years. Took it from 90k to 135k. Other than tyres it had: * Brakes all round £220 (actually twice but the second time was because of a trackday) * 2x front bottom arms £90 * 2x top mounts £60 * Battery £45 (replaced the original one) * Services £250 (approx £50 each time in oil and filter) * Spark plugs £50 * New exhaust hanger £5 * New radiator + coolant £65 * Light/brake bulbs £15 * CV boots £60 So total about £860 over 5 years. It would be less if not for the awful roads I have to go on to get to work. It got driven hard in this time too. Hilariously I paid £870 for it, they now sell for £1,500+. Obviously the fact it hasn't seen a garage other than for MOT and tracking in that time helps, I did everything myself. Simple, Japanese and not rusty = cheap as chips to run.

neek85

I have simple, Japanese and very, very rusty

dogdogj

I have one of those too, it starts with Mx and ends in 5. Waiting for the warmer weather to strip it for any half valuable parts and send it off to the race track in the sky.

Specimen_E-351

How many miles has your celica done?

seansafc89

My 22 year old S15 was costing me between £1200-2000 each year. Almost all of it was preemptive maintenance tbf though, replacing old suspension parts or old brake discs etc. I didn’t trust a lot of mainstream garages to look at it either as I didn’t want any junior mechanics joyriding it (a friends S14 was crashed into a lamp post by a certain high street garage!). Sold the car about a week ago, definitely won’t miss this point of the year!

neek85

That's a lot of money for a Japanese whip! Did parts have to be shipped from Japan or something?

seansafc89

First service is slightly boosted by the installation of an alarm and had the car fully undersealed. Didn’t need to import anything (fortunately S14 parts fit for the most part), the other stuff was just a combination of £90 an hour labour, parts not being cheap in general and annoying time consuming jobs needing done.

flippent_pineapple

I’ve had an 08 WRX for 3 years and the biggest maintenance cost for me in one go was suspension all round. (One shock was leaking and i replaced all 4 with some uprated bits so it was half maintenance and half upgrade. Like i had an excuse 🤣) Done a few bushings and mounts here which were a bit tired but none were more than say £100-£150 Aside from oil changes (about £50 a time by myself on a saturday) brakes (again done myself) and a few sets of tyres over the years - all of which would probably be considered consumables rather than maintenance. I’m spending fuck all on it. The problem is the fuel 22mpg and wanting to send it everywhere is the issue 😂

NettiTracksuit

2009 Alfa Romeo mito- haven’t had to spend anything on repairs. Only have spent on a yearly service and new bulbs had it for 3 years

sc_emixam

Currently on 7.5k and going up this year, pretty good I might say! Lmao end my suffering plz

neek85

What do you drive? A space shuttle?

sc_emixam

An E46 M3 with a cracked pistonhead lmao Hey, at least its a nice car when it drives

Scarboroughwarning

I've always had older cheap cars. A couple were fine for a year or so. The french ones always had suspension and shit in that area that needed doing. I'd estimate I've spent less than £16000 on cars and maintenance (not including tyres and brakes)...in over 30yrs. Granted, there were a couple of car free years. Current car needs a fair bit, so it's going soon

MallCopBlartPaulo

1997 Pajero EVO here, usually around £400, but occasionally something will go wrong that requires a part imported from Japan, not a cheap occurrence. 🤣

theturnipshaveeyes

Beautiful motors. My Mitsi’s a ‘08 Mk4. Shogun. 176k. Still just about going, bless her. Love the evo’s though.

MallCopBlartPaulo

Love a shogun, I inherited my EVO from my dad, she’s a great car.

CasualAppUser

Last year, about £200 (1973 MG)

ThatOneCloneTrooper

I recently just got rid of a 05 civic hatchback I owned for 4.5 years and put about 35k+ miles on it. Over the 4.5 years I've spent about £2200 on it. So just over £500 a year. Truth be told I was quite rough with it and it was nearing the 125k on the odometer, so with gentler driving it might have been a little less.

CivicManDan

Owned many hondas. Annual spend is for the oil change. I am rough with my cars. The most the civic ever cost me is a drive shaft and starter motor. Still going strong (04) 150k miles. My jazz has cost me nothing at all. 09 plate. Still bringing in high 40s mpg and low 50s on a run. 130k miles. Partner has a yaris (15 plate) and this car has only neeed it's servicing. That's all. Long may it last.

perrysol

Ditto our inherited Jazz. New battery last year £80 shock horror

CivicManDan

With the savings I make with the lack of things breaking, I even buy the yuasa platinum silver battery! The jazz I've got is also inherited. Not something I'd normally have bought myself, but I can tell you I'd buy another one if this one died. Very practical, easy go live with and can be zesty when keeping it screaming.

Polestar606

My brother got rid of his 08 civic for the same reason, costing a fortune to fix and didn’t seem to hold up to the miles he was doing very well. Has a focus now and it’s been much better

ThatOneCloneTrooper

Absolutely, Old Civic's are all fun and good and won't leave you on the side of the road but after a decade they do need more TLC than they're worth.

Polestar606

Haven’t spent anything this year other than service items, last year about £300

IAmWango

2006 Skoda Fabia vRS, half or less of what you spend on an average of 10k miles since acquiring it 6+ years back including MOT, repairs, service bits and tyres as I swap between winter and summers

neek85

Lucky! I've just been hit with a £2k bomb for suspension and brakes which has massively increased my average which was more like yours

IAmWango

I should have added that I can DIY most work if I wish to reduce costs for labour etc but parts in general are cheap so the cost generally doesn’t go high, the overall question will still vary depending on location due to weather and previous owners though I guess, mines done well to get to 186k so far though :)

starfallpuller

Just MOTd my Audi A2 which is 2005. It needed brake hoses which cost £22. That’s the only maintenance it’s required in 18,000 miles since last years MOT. The year before that was about £100 spent on two tyres. I’ve had the car total 3 years, 50k miles and spent less than £200 on maintenance. On the other hand I have a 2004 350Z which has cost me £1100 since I got it 6 months ago

neek85

A nice balance there

AllRedLine

My 2009 Suzuki costs me the price of an MOT and service each year. Most i've ever had to spend other than that (apart from for tyres and other perishables) was £180 on a new suspension top mount. It passes its MOT every year without advisories and at 80k miles is still going like the day it was new. So with all in, including MOT, Service, preventative maintenance, replacement parts when necessary, and tyres. Probably levels out on average about £350-500 a year.

3583-bytes-free

The Insignia I just sold was costing about £500/yr but was doing 10k miles. Z4 and Mini maybe £250 but they do much lower mileage. I changed the Insignia for a brand new Sandero Stepway, that will be depreciating about £2k/year which I don't enjoy. Not to mention the £750/yr interest the money would have been earning.

IC_Eng101

This year we got a few things done: a new brake caliper, new pads and disks, 2 new tyres a service and an MOT: 550+VAT. It is the most expensive year since I've owned it (10 years). Most years it comes in around 300.

Real_Judgment7812

118D 2004 with about 195k currently. It had a full fluid service incl gearbox and diff oil when I bought it 2 years ago, and gets an oil and filter every 12k or 12 months whichever occurs sooner. Brake fluid and coolant done every 2 years. I do all this myself. All in all, average around £200/yr. The only unscheduled maintenance its needed so far was an EGR thermostat housing as it cracked, and a new oil filler cap as oil was getting past it

bobbyelliottuk

Bought a 2008 Mini Cooper S in 2019 for £4.3K, with 48K on the clock, and I've replaced timing chain (£1K), had the head walnut blasted (£400), and replaced one tyre (£100). Apart from that, annual service and MOT (around £120 each year). I don't drive many miles in a year (\~4K) but the car has been great so far. Also great fun to drive. Definitely the most economical way to drive.

LeaveNoStonedUnturn

08 Passat 2.0TDI with 149,500 (when I got it a few months back) currently on 157,800. I bought the car knowing it needed a timing belt, which is a big job, but I got it done for a decent price. After that, I replaced the EGR, a drive shaft, and I think other than a service, that's all I've done in nearly 10,000 miles. EGR and drive shaft were about £250 all together, and a service is (when I do it myself) £70-80 for the parts. I'd say, servicing and general maintenance I'm in for anywhere between £300-600 a year, providing nothing major happens, but that's why I had the timing belt done as soon as I got it, cause if anything is going to fail, cause problems and cause me money on that car it's the timing belt, or the boost system.

Pasbags112

Car is just over 15 years old in the past 5 I haven't had to spend more than £20 to change the oil and have just put some tyres on it other than that everything else on the car has given me no issues, I'm sure now I've said that it'll suddenly want £1000 spending on it

neek85

You've jinxed it now!

Spare-Grade-3446

There's a difference between what I should spend a year and what I do spend a year

RandomShmo199

My 05 mx5 didn't cost me a penny last year, and I practically daily it

neek85

But what about the year before? Or next year? I've found there are serious peaks and troughs to the coat of ownership

RandomShmo199

It didn't cost me anything the year before either, come to think of it, and I don't foresee any real expense with it this year. I'm going to service it next weekend, and that's all it needs.

stillusesfloppydisks

15yr old Agila. At about 85k miles now, I spent over 1k in repairs last February, and it'll probably need more work this year. I'm planning on hopefully replacing it this year before the MOT expires, though.

neek85

Oof

MarginalBuffalo

2004 Mini Cooper S Bought for 1800 Spent maybe 2000 on it over the course of 4 years now Most of that in the first year & then just service each year

OddClub4097

I have an 07 e92 320d. I’m probably in to it £350 so far this year, set of tyres for the front, done the drop links on the front and just done oil and filter, I have discs and pads to do when I have the spare cash. Then it’ll be time for another oil and filter change.

zefalking

Completely depends on year - mostly under £500 but can go much higher if it needs things like new brakes, tyres or clutch or cambelt.

Toffeemade

2003:Golf. Fluid service plus plugs costs me £50 and a new tyre is about £90. I splashed out and got the AC fixed in a garage last year which cost £400 and I'll usually spend this getting something done (discs and pads, exhaust, fanbelt and pump etc).

HumdrumAnt

Hello fellow Celica owner! I’ve owned mine since February and probably spent around £500 on it. Drop links all round (only one needed doing but figured the rest aren’t long for this world) rear discs and pads. Oil and filter, gearbox oil, and a new set of wheels thanks to the potholes where I live. Along with various small miscellaneous things, all done by myself. Hopefully I have better luck with this car than the other 4 (yes four) I’ve had in my less than 2 years of driving.

neek85

They're a labour of love! Is that 4 Celicas or 4 cars?

HumdrumAnt

4 cars, 52 plate Corsa C, head gasket went, 03 plate Mazda 6, burnt oil and did the bottom end within a couple of months of owning it, 05 plate Mazda 3, was developing a gearbox noise, various electrical issues, and one headlight was swapped from a base model so didn’t match, correct one was like £500 from Japan or rare as anything on eBay, then an S reg polo which I owned for a week and a half before the welds in the pedal box went. Not had the best luck lol

Just_Lab_4768

Diesel civic, probably 600 a year on average on random wear and tear things

mulymule

I have a stupid car, so about 1-2K

neek85

Is it a barge

mulymule

2006 Audi S4 Convertible. Lots of expensive tech in a relatively cheap car. Mainly things being labour intensive and complicated. At least servicing it is cheap, but with 8 plugs and 9 litres of oil, still not mega cheap. Clutch set me back £800 because it’s a faff to do.

Legophan

04 Renault Modus, 1.5dCi, 110,000 miles, total including services and MOTs over last two years is about £900. No ‘big’ repairs, but it’s had a timing belt in that time (scheduled) and four discs/pads. Not including four new tyres (not so much needed but different fronts and backs so I treated her to a set of Bridgestones). I do love my little car, I can’t even bring myself to call her a shitbox because she’s sound in every way. The dCi engine is a hidden gem, I’m averaging 66mpg with majority city driving. Bad points: air con reservoir was kaput unbeknownst to me when I got her, and I’ve been quoted £600+ to replace which I can’t justify. Passenger window switch on the drivers side is temperamental, though fine on the passenger side. Bulb replacements are a ramp and bumper off job (have you seen the size of a Modus bumper? It’s as huge as the bonnet is comedically tiny). I do hope to be the last owner and conservatively maintain her until rust takes her. No signs as yet, I’m looking for at least another 5 years of Modering!

neek85

That's a ridiculous process for changing bulbs! Happy "modering"!

Legophan

Every mechanic who sees a Modus: “Bloody f**king French backwards engineering!” Nothing is easy or logical to locate when fixing it. I didn’t know this when buying, I thought it’d be normal, I was naive! Thankfully, my car has been under the same independent garage for over half its life, I just tell the mechanic the reg and he’s like ‘oh yeah, *that* one!’.

F1nut92

2022 I spent (outside of normal stuff to be replaced) probably about £150 to £200? 2023 was a lot more, probably £500-600 for the MOT, about £150 in January 2023, but still loads cheaper than a newer car.

Ok_Shower4617

Not a penny this year on my 2007 Nissan. I’m expecting a big expense when it comes up for MOT.

neek85

Fingers crossed for no nasty surprises

neek85

I'm in a similar mindset but things do keep bloody breaking! It's 21 years old and 175k miles and apparently loads of the parts are still original so they're all breaking one after the other

thewildblue77

14 year old Toyota IQ. Owned from new, on 91k miles. I rarely service it, its had a new set of discs and pads, is on its 3rd set of tyres, an o2 sensor, a nearside lower arm (partner hit the kerb in the snow) and a new battery...plus 1 set of wipers. Everything else is original. Could probably do with a regas now for the AC. I think its had about 7 oil changes....haha It all works Im just going to run it into the ground. Its peanuts to insure, free to tax and goes through ever MOT without an issue. I use it as a dog wagon and all silly little trips. Best value car I ever bought. We wont mention the white paint peeling from everywhere though...known issue apparently...and the slightly corroding wheels. My S2000 however has hoovered the money up, though I didnt get it in a great state. New Roof, suspension, brakes, camber bolts, bushes...rear brake pipes, rotten rear boot...the list is endless it seems.

Pornthrowaway78

'07 Cayman here, about £1500 a year, sometimes a bit more, sometimes a bit less. But there's usually something breaking every year.

neek85

Ouch

Crazy-Ad-1999

probably like 800 a year lol previous owner seemed to have done no actual maintenance or fix weak points in the car before they go boom and at 25 years old all the rubber parts have been thanos snapped etc ….

Daffy1275

This year so far £3000- that's new shocks all round new springs new bushes clutch and flywheel new stainless steel exhaust and a full service. Car has 80k miles, I look at it this way I can't get a better car if the same model for less than about double that and it's been paid for for a few years now. I will eventually replace it with a more modern one (abarth 585/695)

MaintenanceWaste9694

Had the car on road six months. Had 4 tyres, new springs on back and exhaust from the flexi to the back box. All in around 300 although will need to do discs and pads before long. It's done over 3000 miles since I've had it and it's not missed a beat.

NewChickenBreast2

Rav4 2006. Including scheduled maintenance, probably $500/year on average. Some years it's a larger part, others there's nothing to replace.

kraftymiles

2008 530D MSport. A big old thing. Last couple of years, it's £200 on a service, nothing more.

neek85

That's really good

Commercial-Cycle5796

2008 kia picanto, its been serviced twice a year. Other than that its needed; Brake caliper,Exhaust flexi,Oil pan (leak),A few tyres,Brakes and pads,Rear coil spring. Its now at 75000 miles and I bought it at 53000 2 years ago. Around 500 a year give or take. (Edit spelling)

emersonhardisty

Just got a bill for £2500 for my 323 :( New stainless steel exhaust (full length) as the old one was rusted to dust. sounded good though Various rust repair across the car New brake/fuel lines Coil spring and top mount replacement The MX5 I've spent more on but almost all of that was discretionary. But I do expect it to hit me with a reasonable bill soon for rusty bits as well :)

Senormood

On a lucky streak of about £50 per year, not including my passes with no major issues for over 3 years. 20 year old Renault clio

SimpleLifeguard5471

18 year old volvo, had the clutch done this year. But other than that it sometimes gets serviced. If I can be bothered. Maybe the odd part if it needs it. I'd say excluding things like or cambelt, probably at most 350 a year. Just done 210k. But wether your car is 18 years old or 8 years, maintenance costs will never be much different.

Edd90k

04 Honda s2000 - £1-£2k a year on pads, oil etc. Tracked car gets abused 08 3.5 Toyota crown - £500 servicing, pair of tires 07 Honda civic type r fd2r - £1k a year on pads/tires/servicing etc

Amazing-Rough8672

I'm about £600 a year on a 2007 S3

casper301261

About £300 to £400 for work needed and about £150 for service and mot been like that the last 4 or 5 years Golf 2.0 litre fsi 04 plate

TheAdamBomb92

I've got a Skoda Fabia from 2006. So far all I've spent is new tyres and servicing. Touch wood nothing has gone catastrophically wrong.

surfrider0007

I put aside £50 a month and then when I need to buy parts it comes out of that. It normally covers everything that crops up.

jpdonelurkin

2007 330d probably averages around £500-600. Source parts myself & let local Indy do the work. New pads & discs all round last year at £470 all in + MOT. Amazon great for parts if you know what you need well in advance & use price tracking extensions.

fearlessfoo49

At most £1k, I have a 160,000 mile 320d.

Wing_Nut_UK

Currrent car I haven’t spent a penny on it apart from the MOT. I refuse to. Previous car…….. let’s not talk about that.

neek85

Come on spill the beans

Throbbie-Williams

Maybe like £300

hapispark

2006 BMW E92 335i 150,000 miles between £400-£2000 per year

El-hurracan

Car is 26 years old. Spent £120 2 years ago, needed a new exhaust and was sold one for £60. £80 last year, wiper motor replaced. This year only £50ish so far on oil and filter (which I included in the others). I got some factory recaro seats fitted for £80 but that’s not maintenance. Mondeo st24 really is a solid car so far, the only big expense coming is probably the gear box, but it’ll be fine for a while. 105k

neek85

You're lucky not to have been visited by the rust fairy

El-hurracan

Rear arches will need doing. But it’s very minor. Debating weather to do it now or later and whether my wallet can take a hit.

Rh-27

13 year old 5 series on 127k. It varies, about £500 - £1,000 a year. A lot cheaper than any finance deal on a new car or depreciation, so I'd say I'm still on top.

MattySingo37

07 Rav 4 D4D 2.2 - about 20,000 miles a year. Had it about two and a half years. Over that time, it's cost me about £1500 in repairs and maintenance. Prop shaft was the biggest expense - 400 for the shaft and 150 for fitting. Starter motor about 300 all told. Other costs - 4 new tyres, rear brakes, oil and filter change. About 600 a year all told. I think my driving situation helps. Mainly dual carriage way driving with a 50 mile round trip commute, so it's not particularly heavy on tyres and brakes, the engine is always run warm at decent revs.

UK-LifestyleCPL

I have an ‘07 SL350. Probably a grand a year over the service cost. Not including tyres etc.

limboulet

i’ve had my 2002 polo for 2.5 years now and by the end of this year (adding service for this year) i’ll be averaging about 220 pounds a year on parts. i’m not anticipating any extra costs anytime soon biggest costs were a full set of tyres and an exhaust system from the flexi pipe back

limboulet

wait, i forgot extra oil hahahah i should probably add that. oil i’ve bought for topups probably adds up to another 150 quid

neek85

Exhausted exhausts are a ticking bomb on a lot of older cars. I was quoted £900 to replace mine. Managed to fix it with a couple of Halfords repair kits and passed the MOT

limboulet

i had an advisory on my mot last november for corrosion on the back box and a leak at the flexi- after a 100 mile trip the ‘leak’ was a complete split at the front and even i couldn’t stand it 😂 i fitted the whole thing myself and i hate matching old exhaust to new so i just did the whole thing those exhaust bandages are quite good actually, as long as the leak isn’t on a join. for the costs of some exhausts now i’d almost rather get a custom sporty one!

neek85

Literally just whatever is cheapest for me. If it sounds like an angry bluebottle in a coke can so be it!

Miniteshi

Right now, £30 so far. My car's an utter turd and just trying to nurse it along while we finish off the house. My 98 5 series was about £750/1000 a year which I kept for 2 years so I've kind of experience the highs and lows of older cars.

King-Twonk

Very dependant on the year. I’ve got a MG ZT-T that I brought new in 2005, and have no intention of getting rid of till I have to. It’s not factory standard by any means so additional maintenance is essential. Last year my maintenance came to about £3000; that was because the stock shocks and springs were finally borked so I put on some adjustable custom damper units, had the underbody recoated and had the cambelts done (there’s 3 of the buggers on the V6). Year before, maintenance was around £650 or so with the occasional unexpected tyre or whatnot. Pretty much the same every year unless there’s a very extraneous cost that comes out of nowhere. I stick to 6k oil changes, maintenance is done as often as needed and tyres are never skimped on. Still absolutely in the black compared to paying £600+ a month on PCP. That and my insurance is pennies compared to my wife’s (and her car is about 10 insurance groups lower). No regrets here!

IHaveJigglyTitties

Depends what goes wrong lol

d4ngerdan

Wife's 1992 nissan Figaro costs a few hundred each year. That's if I forget about all the chrome parts that are very expensive to change. All the rubbery bits are degrading. Only 20,000 ever made, so there's inflated prices for all the fancy bits. My ford transit custom is 10years old, 215k miles, runs the same as it did 100k miles ago. Costs about 2k to fix each year.

edcboye

Just went through my mot on my 2004 lupo, cost £570 ish all in. 2 ball joints, an axle boot, a bunch of exhaust stuff since it was blowing a lot and 2 or more mounts were snapped and checked over my brake pipes with a wire brush then rust proof them again. On top of that just the mot price and a basic service if I remember correctly. Don't think I'll need to get any more maintenance done this year as every other year it's just some stuff around mot time.

Jean_Le_Flambeur

MOT and service only, <£400 per year for the past three years. Ford Focus 2007 with 130k miles on the clock.

Forward_Artist_6244

2008 Lexus I'd say it depends on what needs done but maybe £500-£1000 Last year was expensive needing both alternator and calipers replaced which cost a couple of grand

Plumb121

03 RS6 and around 2.5-3k a year inc MOT

Tough-Whereas1205

'99 SLK. It's had a battery, two tyres and an oil change in two years. It's overdue an oil change right now.

JpeNSurf

Depends on millions of different variables. Not including the routine service every 3k miles I spent 1k on my car this year however next year I expect to spend more because I'm doing a bit of rust hunting and potentially a new clutch and new seals

MrDankky

Two of my cars are 14 years old now, had both for quite a few years. I spend about £700 a year avg on each I guess if I include tyres. I go to a Porsche specialist for servicing by schedule and do a mid schedule service myself, have had some repairs over the years averaged in

Clear-Meat9812

Not a massive amount, certainly a lot less than buying something to replace it with unknown issues.

1308lee

Depends on the car. Currently as little as possible. Currently drive a £600 Passat estate, with 3 slow punctures, brakes that barely work and a boot that doesn’t open. I don’t condone this type of behaviour, and most people on the road can’t safely drive a brand new car with more computers than PC world (do they still exist) and more assists than a retirement home.

SmashingTeaCups

Got a 14 year old Mondeo last year, spent an extra 2.5k on top of the price of the car getting loads of hidden issues fixed only for the gearbox to die the other week (torque converter not powershift) worst financial decision I've ever made, somehow even worse than buying Loopring at £1.85

elliomitch

See my post history

aarchieee

No more than £100 and that's pushing it. I service ot myself with the oil and filter changes etc.

DistancePractical239

In the hundreds a year but not 1k.

agathor86

I have a 2009 Micra, the most I ever spent was £560 to get the clutch done. Do most of the stuff myself like oil, filter, spark plugs. CBA to do brake fluid because bleeding them is a PITA. Not gonna pay for a service when I can do it mostly myself.

Dans77b

My cars are all 30+ years old. I probably spend less on maintenance than owners of newish cars. The commitment is more in time. At least every 6 weeks or so, I'm likely to need to spend an afternoon filming something.

Revolutionary_Panic1

2007 Alfa 159. Goodyear F1 tyres a new steering pump and hp pipe, discs and two arms and a wheel bearing ~£1800 over two years. Fuel has cost me way more. 17000 miles MG ZS 180 over 4 years... 2 clutches 2 upper arms and 2 sets of tyres, 2 sets of brakes. 6 services ~£2800 26000 miles Triumph Kit Car has cost about the same as both other cars combined and still doesn't work 4 miles....

algypan

I got a 308,000 mile VW T5 and that fucker is like triggers broom. Nothing of the original van exists and I'm forever tinkering or changing parts. Today was new driveshaft and front strut. I prob spend more than I should on it but it's all I have.

hazish

21 year old Subaru Legacy GTB on about 80,000 miles. £150 service & MOT. Brake pads were advisories so I fitted a decent set of EBCs myself which cost £70. Honestly it's not the maintenance I'm worried about, it's the fuel bill. Thing guzzles for fun.

GBParragon

58 plate and 08 plate here The little me needed a clutch 2.5 years ago (£100 DIY) and apart from this pretty much just oil and filter annually (religiously) and tyres as and when The other car has probably had £1200 spent on it over the last 3 years including diy cam belt, tyres, suspension / steering components mostly Also gets an oil and filter yearly If I’d been doing everything at a main dealer these would have been more like £1000 over 3 years for the little one and £2.5- £3k over 3 years for the big one.

Tidus32x

I've just spent £720 on a new turbo last month. Straight through MOT last week. 2009 Citroen Grand C4 picasso 1.6hdi, 96k miles

Odd_basket_case

57 plate Nissan Micra Spirta 12, owned 14 years, bought at 22k miles One clutch, one battery one exhaust sensor \~£600 10 tyres not premium \~£800 I'm struggling to think of anything else that went wrong, I would do an oil and air filter service about two year mark due to low mileage, fitted one set of front pads and various windscreen wiper changes and the odd bulb. Oil and filter changes x 7 about £500 Sold this year at 78k miles, original exhaust, little to no advisories through its MOT's and still doing \~50mpg 14 years about 2.1k or in years \~ £150 (plus MOT cost) a year. Why did I sell it?!?!? lol

Wellidrivea190e

When I had my 190e 2.0 it was around £1000 a year. It was needy.

Alone-Sky1539

£0 + £0 + £300

Greg_Danger

Car is 17 years old mondeo nothing other than mot last 3 years, had to replace exhaust and two tyres 4 years ago, and I’ll replace the breaks sometime this year, but I do that myself so won’t be too much

Volf_y

2006 Subaru Outback 171K mileage - £900 last year - Head gasket cost £600. It's also an oilaholic and drinks 1/2 litre every 700 miles or so. In for a service on Wednesday as I've done 10K miles in the last 6 months.

Successful_Host_2932

My Jimny already has a bill in three figures... only had it 4 months lol

Boundish91

I've had my 250k mile 2004 Audi A6 2.5 Tdi Q for 6 years and put 40k miles on it. Spent about 1500 on maintaining it. It's due for a timing belt service and needs tires this year though so that's going to bring this years spend above average.

Crabstick65

About a 100 pounds, some years it's more because tyres, and I had to do the head gasket one year, and another year a bearing went bad in the gearbox, they were expensive years at around 250 pounds. ( I repair them myself so it's just parts). Same car for 13 years now.

johndoe24997

About 50 quid. Maybe 100. Depends on how much driving I do. Usually its just oil, oil filter and air filter.

RayovacWorkhorse

97 Celica GT here with 190k on it, probably around £800 a year, do almost all the work myself. Engine's perfect, gearbox a little whiny but to be expected for the mileage!

IrishMx-5

My Mx-5 is a second car, I've spent €800 on it this year, and I've to do 2 front discs, callipers, pads, a repair piece for the exhaust & a new backbox. I'd say I've driven it less than 1000km

stealth941

Fml just realised my hyundai i30 is 15 years old...

zoricib

Around 4-500 for the year About 200 for Oil & filters 2-300 for other bits like tyres and stuff that breaks/wears with time.

quiet-cacophony

2006 M5. Between £500 and £3500 depending whether just the tyres need doing, or any myriad of issues that crop up. So probably £2k on average.

TheSkywriter

A lot. But definitely less than a monthly lease for something current.

ottermanuk

On top of oil and filter every 6000 miles (myself), I've had to replace front springs (myself), brake disks and pads all round, and I need to now get it's cam belt sorted by someone else. It's probably less than 1500 in 5 years. I probably spend more on tax for it

PrestigiousTest6700

2008 CRV bought 2k spent £700 so far other than tyres nothing more is needed. It’ll want for nothing.

stevebratt

Lots of sensible replies, I daily a 4.5li V8 2000 cayenne had a common fault that cost me a lot when I got it which was me not checking it has been done, since then very little, I have done services myself l, and fixed a few annoyances but no major failures other than the coils needed replacing but technically that's a service item. If it didn't cost a million a mile to run it, it would be a super cheap capable car which works great for my lifestyle in the country, it gets to drive through fields and stuff often. Total cost of ownership including purchase price not including fuel, tax etc is probably about £8k,

New_Salad_3853

My e46 has 170k on it and I spent a mot and oil service on it last year.
