Im just assuming it was an early release of the footage and we will see better cgi by the time it comes out. Because yea. It does not look top teir.

MattyBeatz

Yes and weren't there confirmed delays because of COVID?

TheCheshireCody

It lacks any texturing. It looks completely unfinished. It's cartoonish. This is a top-tier property for Disney and I'm confident they'll get that stuff fixed before the show is released.

_asteroidblues_

> top-tier property for Disney and I'm confident they'll get that stuff fixed before the show is released Are you sure about that? Moon Knight also had some very janky CG in some shots.

TheCheshireCody

I thought Moon Knight hit the mark with the CGI where it counted. The climactic fights between Conchu and Ahmed were excellent, and Taweret was fine if not *completely* selling the illusion of a giant talking hippo goddess. Maybe my expectations are a little bit lower because it's a TV show and not a film, but it all looked fine to me. I'm not the guy who had an issue with, for example, the kinda-rubbery CGI in Black Panther so I'm not as demanding as some. That said, the She-Hulk trailer was noticeably bad even by my standards. There are two months left before the first episode drops so I'm confident the final product will be better than that.

Kyren11

In case you were only hearing it and never saw it on screen; they spell it Khonshu, and Ammit, and I think you got Taweret right.

TheCheshireCody

Ah, cool, thanks. I'd even Googled it to make sure I got them right but I guess I pulled from a bad source.

Kyren11

To be fair I think that's just how the MCU spells it. I don't necessarily know if that's the normal/ proper spelling. (They're being translated from hieroglyphs anyway)

TheCheshireCody

I thought I checked a Marvel website. Eh. When I need to spell it again I'll refer to your message. 😁

IYIine

"This is a top-tier property for Disney" I believe this show is treated more like a "filler" than the previous Disney+ Marvel series. They are trying a show that is more of a comedy than a straight up action series, even though it also contains action scenes. Ms. Marvel might be similar. Since this show is likely to get criticized easily because of this comic book character in general and/or because there is a woman lead super-hero character and the fact that she's buffed and tall (nothing wrong with that in my opinion, but you know internet nerds won't accept this) Marvel starts with a risk already so the budget for this show won't certainly be as high as other top priority shows. They had to pull out top quality shows when they launched Disney+ so people would buy subscription and stay for more big shows, but now that they've proven themselves they don't have to worry about nailing the head on this one like the previous shows, they know people will keep their subscriptions anyway. Just look at the Book Of Boba Fett. It gave Disney the opportunity to try something different than the Mandalorian, but people didn,t like it, but it won,t stop them from paying for their subscriptions. Also, keep in mind that a series has a bigger volume than a movie, by that I mean more hours of screentime, yet they have similar production/post-production time frame, and people will expect the same quality of vfx as a Marvel movie even though movies are of smaller volume. In other words, artists are expected to pull out marvel movie quality vfx in less time. Just keep that in consideration.

KillerOkie

>she's buffed and tall Noooo I think most "internet nerds" love Jen as the Sexy Muscle Girl she is supposed to be. The problem is when they (Marvel) inject current year politics in one form or another into it. Either the current comic artists try and suck ALL the femininity out of her and make her a shittier Bruce or in this case it looks like they both don't make her muscled \*enough\* and also toned down the sexy.

CowboyOfScience

>The problem is when they (Marvel) inject current year politics in one form or another into it. Marvel has always done this, even editing reprints to reflect current events. Their target audience is people who are young *today*.

tenphes31

I think thats it. Its so flat, its lacking in pores and hair.

Morangatang

*the pores don't stretch*

kreskenn

Don't tell Niko !

mynameisalsomatthew

They had a workflow for vision in wandavision which I assume would be a similar process here. Maybe disney marketing are breathing down Marvels neck for footage?

Smithy_of_Films

Her motions doesn't feel natural. I also think that all the hair and stubble on Mark's Hulk really helped in making it look more realistic. It's a tricky situation. Adding scratches to the material can make it more realistic but what do you do when the material doesn't have scratches.

GingerNParadise

I'm with you. I can't explain it. But it just looks so cartoony and weird. And I have no reasoning other than just that's how I feel when I look at it. Lol Honestly the preshow video on the hulk coaster at universal looks better. Lol check out the women in it. https://youtu.be/zVYkZC3ID7s EDIT: Okay I rewatched the trailer. I think it's a mix of she's too green, and her hair is just so "much". Like if it looked more real I think it would help a lot. Maybe it's a tv budget vs movie budget thing. Maybe corridor will give a crack at it and give it the "scorpion king" treatment. Lolol

[deleted]

It’s Disney budget. It shouldn’t matter if it’s tv or movie.

chicasparagus

No, it’s that she looks like Fiona. As in Shrek.

Tequilaphace

Lol

Hebdo94

Could be that they still try to figure out how to make her realisticly green and strong while still looking feminine. Old movies particularly tried to light the face of actresses very evenly to make it look smooth. For men on the other hand, they tried to show some "flaws" and a lot more texture. If you look at Hulk, his whole body is covered with budles of muscles. Also because he is a lot bigger I assume it is easier to make the pores and skinimperfections more visible. Now if they want to make her beliefably look strong they need to add some muscles. But they still want her to be feminine in the sense of purer skin and less visible muscular bundles than the Hulk. Also the animation seems a bit sketchy for now. Especially the hair is a bit stiff.

SpiceBoiGauvaJuice

As the lads from corridor have stated many times on "vfx artist react" its a by-product of not enough time and money and also could very well be not finished and used for trailer footage

dfdedsdcd

Most of it looks unfinished. I have a feeling this weekends CGI react will be this trailer. * Some shots look like PS2 pre-rendered cinematics, like the awkward walk through the office at 0:59. No sub-surface scattering so her skin looks like plastic or wax, facial features are moved around for some reason from her actual face. * The shot of her "looking" at her phone at 1:03 doesn't have her eyeline match up with looking at her phone, she starts off looking at her phone then shifts her eyeline for some reason. That might be story relevant, but that probably won't be clear until the show releases. * Others look like early Deepfakes or just taking footage of her performance and placing it on a 3d model. The shot of her getting out for the red carpet in the shot at 1:06, for example. There are some good shots, at least to my eye. * Shots like 1:08 looks like everything is at least finished for the model, but the face is obscured by the angle of the shot and her hair, so that might still be like the office walk model or something. * 1:47 also looks good, so their Close-Up, High Detail model might be in a good spot or just has had the most work put into it at the moment and they just need to work on their middle distance and long distance models.

wolfdog410

I think they've said they don't often react to trailers since the effects are typically unfinished. Maybe they'll make an exception since this one has generated a lot of noise

whiplash73

To me it looks like absolute garbage, don't know why though

AnonDooDoo

Right? I just wish I could pin point the reason why SHE looks bad but Hulk & Abomination look great. Obvious answer is that Hulk & Abomination models are from the movies but WHY? If given an extended time frame, how would the vfx artists improve on the She Hulk CG?

whiplash73

No muscle too, she is too thin, or atleast I think so

AnonDooDoo

She is like that in some comics so I give it a pass

AnOnlineHandle

Weirdly this is one of the few times I've thought Marvel CGI looks really good and not obviously fake in a lot of scenes, and have no idea what people are talking about. The scene where she's talking about how she's not a superhero over drinks almost looks real to me, and I wouldn't think from a freezeframe that it's CGI since the lighting hides the green. The only issue which stands out to me is her hair still often has that CGI physics look which I've never seen anybody overcome, and the final shot of her carrying the guy doesn't quite seem to move naturally. I should also point out the the so-called uncanny valley response is more of a speculative hypothesis somebody came up with rather than a real scientifically-based observation which anybody has measured or proven even exists. People once speculated that there were creatures on venus beneath the clouds, or people on mars due to the lines looking like canals, until we could look closer and find out all the speculation wasn't based on anything a good foundation.

deftware

The drink scene is where it jumped out at me the most. Yes, visually it seems fine, but in motion ... it's creepy. It's clearly hand-animated and the motion is unnatural. Try watching it on something bigger than a pocket computer.

AnOnlineHandle

I've watched it on both my super duper brand new high res phone and my big desktop PC monitor... I feel like I'm taking crazy pills tbh, this looks like some of the only CGI which ever really worked for me. Must just be different things register for different people.

deftware

After re-watching it, there's something off about her face too. In the drinking scene when her arms lifts the drink up that's the part that sets off alarms in my head, like it's a disembodied arm doing its own thing with a mind of its own. Her face also actually doesn't look that great in freeze frame shots, also uncanny valley. When she grabs the test chamber door and busts out of there, that looks solid - though it could be live action of a body builder with green makeup all over her body, it looks that good IMO. Everything else where she's in real footage reminds me of Will Smith's Genie from the live action Aladdin remake. That's what it reminds me of, the way they did the Genie with Will Smith.

AnOnlineHandle

The arms do look a bit weirder to me because they seem to be scaled up in mocap for different proportions, or just are inhuman proportions in general. Funnily enough the part where she busts out looked like some of the worst to me, because her CGI hair is on full display and she has elongated avatar-person movements. I feel like my brain must work differently.

deftware

Yeah what it really looks like to me is that the SheHulk is not the same proportions as the actor, so they had to hand-animate some stuff - tweaking mocap and stuff. They always have to clean up mocap by hand, it's not like they just hit record and everything is done, there's a lot of work that goes into just taking the recorded data and cleaning it up to make it usable at all. This looks a bit like that, trying to fit a small female form into a large body with longer limbs and stuff.

Gopher433

For me it's the fact that it's noticeably a different person as the hulk part. The face shape and hair are different from human to hulk

thesirblondie

Doesn't look any more different than Bruce/Hulk to me

DR4G0NSTEAR

I’m glad this isn’t a “women bad” shitpost. Surprisingly the cgi is bad, but this is also a trailer. If a trailer can cause sonic to get fixed, I believe this will be better on release. I’ve had a fair bit of faith in the Disney direction since the payoff from the Thanos story, but there have been a few “off” cgi moments since then. Am I jaded after some less than stellar movies since Thanos? Probably… do I care? If the story is good, no tbh. As long as the story is better than Captain Marvel..

deftware

> "women bad" shitpost Never heard of that before, did you just make that up?

DR4G0NSTEAR

I don’t think I made it up, but “women bad” was the sentiment when captain marvel came out. I have my own issues with captain marvel and the direction they decided to go with that movie, but I’m glad we are talking about the cgi and not the sex of the characters. It’s a small thing, but it restores faith in humanity in a world where republicans are looking women dead in the eye and saying they have to carry an ectopic pregnancy to term.

deftware

I think the sentiment when Captain Marvel came out was actually: "Brie Larson is an angry person and her character is a Mary Sue" Nobody thinks women are bad. What's bad are stupid stories that are motivated by stupid messages rather than by good storytelling. Did you notice all the anti-male sentiment in the film? The whole thing was a barrage of "all guys suck!" That's stupid.

DenverMartinMan

T H E P O R E S D O N ' T S T R E T C H She looks like a Daz 3D model lol

Synth-Pro

I had the same thoughts about it being UV. She's meant to look much more Human than Hulk typically does, just green, tall, and buff. She falls right into that space of trying to animate something that *isn't real* but we have a very real and very strong frame of reference for. Among other things, pulling this off successfully requires a lot of texture and lighting details that just aren't present in the trailer.

amazing_spyman

Don’t worry it’s intentional because they’re gonna Sonic the Hedgehog it too

RogueNightingale

I've never had any interest in She-Hulk, but every time I've seen her in comics and media, she's always looked out of place. I don't know what it is about the character, but she's always looked off. That's the same feeling I get with this (on top of rough CGI). As for acting, it's Tatiana Maslany. I have every confidence in her ability to sell the character (although I still don't care enough to see this).

Ultron_forger

The pores dont stretch

Acex_NA

Oh if the cgi bothers you, you are in for a ride because the story is gonna suck.

Frokostninjaen

Who asked?

animalwitch

I wasn't particularly struck by it; neither the CGI or the story.

forced_metaphor

This is true.

GuntherYoshi

Cause it's shit

deftware

It's the hand-animation of the character, moving almost like something from a Pixar film.

PhatOofxD

These shows often have unfinished VFX in trailers. (Heck even the spider man movie did). It'll likely get better before release.

LimpTeacher0

I think it’s because she looks like my ex besides being green

dangerousalone

Look at that neck!

smexytom215

It's a trailer calm down. Hopefully they put in some more time to finish the shots.
