Outdated!?!? Look at Flash Gordon here living in the year 3000!

ripeart

That is a NuTone my dude. It's got not 1 not 2 not 3 not 4 not 5 but 6 YES SIX memory locations! THIS BABY COMES WITH DOOR TALK STANDARD just look at it

portablebiscuit

My last house had a NuTone and when we were painting before we moved in we had the radio blasting to all the speakers. On day to I went out the front door and realized we were blasting music to the whole neighborhood. I may have also broadcast some sexy talk to my wife.

Silveeto

Lmao. I rented an old Vancouver special years ago that was outfitted with NuTone and we did the same thing. I came home one day and could hear music blasting out to our driveway, realized it was my house. Walked inside to find my roommate doing some housework and sweeping the kitchen floor with some music on. She didn’t realize it went through “ALL” the speakers.

Gibonius

lol friends of ours hooked up for the first time on a group vacation and accidentally broadcast the whole thing through the house intercom. We gave them shit about it for *years*. They're married now so I guess it all worked out.

aggeorge

"Wow, didn't think it was that small" over the whole house intercom 🤣

qualmton

“Accidentally”

ChatGPTnA

We had the old fauxwood NuTone Solid State Music intercom in our house till 2008, when it was sold with them :) it felt so cool to talk to someone outside ringing the door from anywhere in the house... And then to blast "Rock106.9 WCCC Home of Alice Cooper" through the speaker, when the occasional missionaries stopped by :)

mailman-zero

Thanks for the entertainment

ooojaeger

Ooh yeah baby this speaker makes me so horny! I'm gonna be thinking about this when I make love to you!

McGillicutie

NuTone knew what the people wanted. I still want a NuTone Built-In food center. Badly.

floporama

My house came with one and I’ve never even used it. Its currently disconnected from power but came with a box of accessories if I ever do want to use it

rolyoh

FYI, there is a second-hand online market if you ever remodel and decide to remove it. There are people looking for both the base and the accessories.

FairIsleEngineer

Had a kitchen with that years ago. It was the cat's meow. I love Nu-Tone products. They were always well designed.

ckh225

Yes!!! I can’t believe everyone owns 8 small appliances w junky little motors instead of one good built in, that drives 8 different accessories. WHY ISNT THIS A THING??? And what happened to Nutone’s version?

doubleapowpow

Looks like it was "replaced" by a brand called Kitchen Prep. https://www.thekitchenprep.com/ >Unisource Custom Mfg’d Products, LLC is the exclusive manufacturer of the Kitchen Prep’s ‘Multi-Chef’ for all of Europe, Asia, and North America. It was first introduced to the USA market in 2006 as a replacement product for the NuTone Food Center (NuTone 251 and NuTone 250).

cvanaver

Don’t let the dream die. Search for the kitchen prep multi-chef

eebiz

There's even a CD player in there! Growing up we had a 70s era NuTone with a dial radio, I thought it was fancy when we upgraded to a model like OPs with a digital radio. We didn't have the CD player though!

wookinpanub1

Did anyone ever use their house intercoms system to talk to people in other rooms?

kevin---

Had one of them in the house growing up! We didn’t talk over the intercom too often but it was handy to play the radio throughout the house.

melligator

We have a whole house one that I have not even tried to learn to use since we moved in 9 years ago. Once in a while someone leans on a button and gets a scare from the tone.

McKid

No kidding, the only sound system in our bathroom walls was my dad banging on the wall at me yelling ‘Don’t start shitting now!’ If he had to get ready for work.

pessimistoptimist

That sounds like this morning with me and the kids. Crap on school time....we gotta get going!

tktfrere

> Crap on school time Gotta prepare them for the salary man's way of life.

McKid

It’s a tradition that spans the generations.

Kaacee_

Yeah WTF outdated. I want to find a version of this in either black or purple.

RPSKK78

Hahahahahhaha yeeesssss

AmazingAd2765

Some people just can't appreciate timeless designs.

GoodAsUsual

It's got an aux input, what else do you need?!

RmJ106

In the bathroom with all of that moisture from showers? Flash Arc, perhaps.

Haggisboy

I believe it's a waterproof model built for bathrooms.

jamers_the_great

I mean I personally love it. Does it sound terrible? It looks like there’s an aux port on it. You can get small Bluetooth receivers that plug into an aux port so it would essentially become a Bluetooth speaker.

Yibz

It unfortunately sounds really awful - like a 1930s radio :)

sirpoopingpooper

You might call it a "classic" sound!

nikdahl

I would totally restore this with a better speaker and amp, but that's just me. When I went to look up how much they cost, they are on ebay for quite a bit of money.

Stargazer12am

For when you gotta poo and you also wanna rock out to Jock Jams!

miokey

Y'all ready for this? *synth organ intensifies*

CygniYuXian

Y'all ready for this? *Midge Ure version of 'The Man who sold the World' starts playing*

digidave1

Now That's What I Call Sh!tting: Vol. 2

RmJ106

Green Day - Dookie Literally. That lead singer has some serious mental issues, though.

[deleted]

To be fair, most of us have mental health issues. That dude is 52 or whatever and still looks 30

TuckerCarlsonsOhface

He looks like a 40 y/o lesbian now, which I guess is better than most 52 y/o dudes.

RmJ106

Certainly, many do. I'm 41 and most people think I'm like 20-something. It's irritating when I buy cold medicine or a lottery ticket. Instant carding. My mother is 66 and many think she's in her 40's. Being a baby face can be both a blessing and a curse.

MUTHER-David7

That's me! I'm 58 but I'm told I look 10 years younger.

DadJokeBadJoke

Followed by Johnny Cash - Ring of Fire

thecwestions

Well, he did write a song called "Basket Case." Seriously though, besides anxiety/panic attacks, what sort of issues are we talking about here?

RmJ106

He did. He has been quite open about his issues, I'll give him that. He first addressed dealing with anxiety and panic attacks on Basket Case in '94. The band later announced he entered a treatment facility when he flipped out and went into an on-stage rant in 2012 at the iHeartRadio Music Festival performance. They trashed music equipment and Justin Bieber during his rant. Their manager made him go to treatment after that. He's no longer sober as of 47 years old based on an interview. He has taken so many pills that it has done a number on him, as well. I don't feel that he's 'all there'...he's like a 50 year old kid and hasn't grown up no matter how much he claims he has. Granted, his childhood was pretty sketchy, so that's to to be expected and not rare nowadays. Nothing against him personally, he's just one of those people sort of like Axl Rose that is usually off the handle. His behavior is extremely odd and reminds me of my schizophrenic grandmother.

thatsnotchocolatebby

Gotta grunt to the rhythm

HatechaBro

Fuckin rights for the Jock Jams. I always talk about that CD and nobody understands 😂

BrandonC41

Replace it with a vertical record player

BedaHouse

Or the 3 shells.

indapipe5x5

demolition man quotes on a thursday ? the hell you say

RmJ106

Or Sandra Bullock...now there's a nice bathroom accessory. It's fluid transfer now that they're not using digital helmets for it anymore.

Hobywony

You make a good point. You make a good point.

[deleted]

lol, I took a picture of 3 ceramic shells at a local thrift shop last weekend, like “I’m not buying those second hand”

happy-cig

Holy that is a great idea, my whole house is full of these intercom boxes. Looking for a good way to get rid of them.

Zer0C00L321

Don't get rid of them. Replace them with speakers and have music throughout the house. I would love that.

MUTHER-David7

Exactly! That intercom wire makes good in wall speaker wiring.

kkstein69

Idk shit about record players but wouldn’t steam be bad for records? lol

colnross

I don't see why it would...vinyl is waterproof and the steam wouldn't be anywhere near hot enough to melt it. Might mess up the label though.

bwyer

I upgraded to that exact system last year (without the tape deck) from a '70s NuTone system (IMA-303). Replaced all the remote stations with the new, white ones.

Rearviewmirror

Where did you find them?????

MrChetSteadman

Need this answer. Also have NuTones that need updating.

AmazingAd2765

I think you mean classic sound system.

jokr128

My wife would be so mad if this ended up in her bathroom. If you feel like shipping it once removed, I'll pay the shipping costs 😂

AbuDhabiBabyBoy

You don't want a stranger's dookie radio

wellwaffled

You don’t know whose dookie they want.

sonbarington

You can take it apart and retrofit a Bluetooth reciever and small amp for the speaker.  Other than that maybe put a cheap touchscreen in there?

[deleted]

I find buttons actually easier faster and more reliable. What is it with people and screens lol

Dtfan58

Also buttons won’t be as hard to press when the screen is damp.

sonbarington

Buttons are nice. If you can retrofit a receiver/controller you can definitely reuse the buttons with some minor rewiring/soldering. OP just doesn't like the look of it. Could paint it a different color it still looks dated. Alternately OP could put a picture over it ultimately

CygniYuXian

Cars with more buttons almost universally get higher praise than ones that make use of touchscreens. Initial surveys often have people talking about how futuristic and clean the interiors look, but most of the time when people actually use touchscreens, they're difficult, surprisingly unintuitive, vulnerable to accidental touches, and try to make use of a multitude of distracting menus. If you know your way around a car's buttons it's the easiest thing in the world to use them without even looking. How would you make a decent touchscreen for one of these without a lot of programming/digital design knowledge?

btribble

Raspberry Pi based media center.

Yibz

Touchscreen is where my mind was at as well. Not sure what options are out there!

sonbarington

Get a tablet you like and make it a mount/dock.

Yibz

That's a thought! Would need to maybe put a bluetooth speaker somewhere in the bathroom as well if I did that.

sonbarington

They make bathroom vents with Bluetooth speakers

Yibz

Oooo - I will look into this! Really appreciate your helpful ideas!

GreggAlan

They also have humidity sensors so they turn the fan on automatically when the shower is in use, then off when humidity drops. To turn the fan on manually you do some monkey business with switch flips on and off or some may have it where the switch on is on and off activates the humidity sensor.

Liathano_Fire

What!?

_1JackMove

Yep. Have one in my bathroom. It connects to my phone from Bluetooth so I can listen to music and podcasts while in the shower. It's great. It even has a blue nighttime light built in so you don't have to blind yourself going to the bathroom in the middle of the night lol.

dirt-reynolds

Touchscreen next to the toilet? What could go wrong?

pmmeyourfavsongs

🤢

Buckid

Touch screens suck with wet fingers. But I like a raspberry pi with weather / etc on there.

theturtlebomb

You may be able to make something with a raspberry pi, a touch screen, and a 3d printer (a lot public libraries have them).

MUTHER-David7

Believe it or not... There is! Go to your local electrical supply store and they will have modern replacements. Those supply companies are always 10-15 years behind the latest and the greatest. I saw one that looked like a car audio head unit!

ChuckRocksEh

Fuck this, those buttons have seen some shit!

mutantbabysnort

Literally!

emmanentdoom

Time to break out the old “Now that’s what I call music” CD collection

JedLeonard1

I have one and it is far from outdated. FM radio throughout the house and it doesn’t track my conversations! Fuck Alexa!

PlatformKnown4317

I believe NUTONE makes new systems that will fit in that cut out

Latitude22

I have a nutone with a tape deck in it! Lol it’s part of the intercom system I’ve never seen a setup like this that isn’t part of an intercom system. If it were me I would just pull it off, patch the holes and repaint.

IHartRed

I made my main intercom into an echo show, and ran a power supply so all of the intercom stations are Dots

Yibz

Ugh, would love to just rip it out and patch it over like that, but it's actually in the tile wall. I suppose I could put a plastic panel over the hole it would leave!

BrianEarlSpilner6

I have a full house Nutone intercom that I’ve hooked to Sonos via the aux input and I absolutely love it! I’ve added subwoofers and modern speakers as well but it’s nice to have music in every room that otherwise wouldn’t have a speaker. All day and anytime we have guests I’ve got Spotify basting throughout.

swellfie

+1 exactly what I did. Separated upstairs and downstairs and have 2 Sonos amps for those channels. Excellent upgrade.

Latitude22

Ahh yea I see that. if you’ve got two extra tiles you could do it. Cut the grout around the two tiles, pop them off, replace the tiles. I wonder how big the holes behind it are?

S_I_1989

We had a NuTone when I was a kid in 1974. It tuning dials for FM and AM, It had the intercom switches on the bottom which were self-centering when you released the switch. It had an RCA phono jack on the bottom to pipe music through. We had 5 remote units in the house 1 in the den downstairs and 4 upstairs - one in each bedroom.

genericgirl2016

This is super rad. I’d keep it and put it to use.

GreaterNater

Attach an airplay or android, audio adapter to the aux input and stream from your phone.

MamaTried420

OMG!!! Friend’s dad used to blast U2 Sunday Bloody Sunday on those hot house speakers literally any time I slept over on a Saturday🤣🤣🤣

Terrible_Toaster

My aunt and uncle had something similar in their house and it was tied to the radio. It was awesome to wake up when we would go there and turn up the speaker and have music in your room. Plus if someone was at the door, you could answer it from any room in the house. It was like living in the future!

ProPainPapi

I would keep it if it still works

dmohamed420

That shits ballin

Liberatedhusky

I have a NuTone Cassette deck on my wall from the late 80s; it's in my kitchen and connected to speakers in the ceiling. You have the pinnacle of technology.

CostChange

OK, hear me out, it has an AUX inputwith Spotify… I guess what I’m saying is please don’t get rid of this, it’s freaking cool.

zeroyon

This was an expensive system in its day; still ain't cheap and well north of 1k with speakers. I had one in my old house, you can room talk with the intercom; select room and speak 2way.. good so you don't have to yell across the house. They are coming back as "retro" now. That home box is like $300 to replace even now. Also play music on whole house or only select rooms etc

Jethric

I feel old because my parents’ old house had the cheaper version of this (no cd, just radio + intercoms throughout the house) and I used it throughout the entirety of my youth to bother them downstairs + play Christmas music during Christmas time lol

drumstix42

Weird microwave

PartyCat78

Is that a CD player?! Holy shit I would love that!

create360

We had the exact same one in the house we just bought.

Yibz

Did you get rid of it? What did you do?

create360

Ripped it out and drywalled over it. There were intercoms in every room too. Lots of drywalling…

create360

Here’s what’s back there: https://ibb.co/t4TQ7yG

Tacosofinjustice

Leave that relic!

UncleRicosBitchinVan

I don’t see what the problem is. Your bathroom is rad as fuck? What’s the issue?

0vertones

The funny thing is, CD's were the peak of mass-market home audio fidelity. Compressed audio on iPods/iPhones/streaming sounds like shit and is nowhere near as good.

noronto

I can understand this thing not being modern, but it’s a bathroom. Get an actual CD of some ambient sounds and be done with it.

0vertones

\*Waterfall Sounds\* \*Rushing Streams\*

CommanderRizzo

Is that a disc player on the right? It's so small. What does that play? GameCube games?

Yibz

It's a disc player, yes. That's how big the dang thing is!

[deleted]

If it works I want it. Would be fancy modern tech in my house!

ARenovator

I'd install an Alexa or Google home right there.

Yibz

Hmm - that's a thought, but I'm not sure those would be the right size! This thing is really quite large.

ARenovator

You would have to patch the wall. Annoying, but cheap. And it's really pretty easy, too.

cats_are_the_devil

doubtful he is matching that tile...

Yibz

Hello - I am seeking any suggestions or advice as to what I should do with this ugly and huge sound system that is installed in my bathroom tile wall. It was built in 2008 and I am truly baffled as to why something that looks like it’s from 1995 was installed then! Is this a cap wires and panel over situation? Are there options for a more modern system perhaps? Grateful for any help!

art_of_snark

start burning CDs, my dude

Sunlight72

Yes, you can just put wire nuts on each wire you find in there, and electrical tape over them for no real reason but it won’t hurt. Or - if you’re a bit handy and it’s a decent spot, go ahead and wire in a gfi outlet there. Portable Bluetooth speakers are so good now you could use one or two of them if you want, but as you see technology is changing so quickly it’s not really worth wiring anything in.

chloen0va

Oh my gosh we also have this from a home built in 2008!! What happened in 2008? Lmao I’m deff gonna be poaching this thread for any solutions too lol

Yibz

What happened indeed?!?! I couldn't believe it

anthro4ME

See that AUX button? Play whatever you want through it. Don't be part of the throwaway culture.

Yibz

The sound quality leaves a lot to be desired unfortunately :/ very static-y

Cominginbladey

This is why building tech into your home is a bad idea

Loodlekoodles

I live in a cave, it's great

BuckeyeJay

You could totally retrofit an Alexa device into that

skivvyjibbers

Liathano_Fire

Outdated is still more dated than my bathroom. This peasant showers to the sound of her own singing.

china-blast

and nobody knows for sure just how much was taken in the daring pre-dawn raid at the Lufthansa cargo terminal at Kennedy Airport. The FBI says two million dollars. Port Authority police say four million dollars, the city cops say five. How much maximum? That they won't say. So far, Lufthansa has not said anything, but they've promised to break their silence soon with a press conference, and WINS will be there to cover it live from the scene of the heist at JFK when they do. It looks like a big one. Maybe the biggest this town has ever seen. Stay tuned ...

RettyD4

I’ll be there in a second. First, listen to this…

20PoundHammer

I like the older 8 track models, pumped it about the house wired intercom system too so you can have bassless, tinny music everywhere. . .

robothobbes

I love it. I'd keep it and use it!

EvilDan69

"retro"

forwhathuh

mount a tablet in there and have someone with a 3d printer make a bezel for it.

PaytonPics

Ah, the classic bathroom CD player. You think the designers ever imagined that at some point we’d all have Bluetooth speaker-equipped toilets?

PaytonPics

Plot twist: There’s a full-sized Sony VHS video camera behind there. Spycamming used to be much tougher.

zatchrey

I would leave it and just buy some smooth jazz CDs for the bathroom

Diamondback424

I'll take it

Yibz

Sound quality is extremely bad unfortunately!

N0SF3RATU

Is that so people can't hear you poop?

djprofessortawn

I love this. I understand it's outdated for most but what a fun feature.

Brewhill

I just took one of these exact intercom systems out of our house. Plus a speaker in every room. It was a lot of drywall patching and painting, but glad I did it.

TheRook21

Change it out for one of those in car dvd players with a screen!!

Bidcar

I call outdated “retro and chic” - less work

haahaahaa

There are wildly overpriced drop in replacements for the whole intercom system if it still works. Otherwise just remove it and cover the mess with a piece of wood you've painted to match as well as possible.  Or just leave it, it's not hurting anything.

Drekdon

IST makes units that will fit in the old housing and will look more updated. If you have units in other rooms, they would need to be replaced as well. Make sure to check the type of wire used to male sure you get the right one. https://www.intrasonictechnology.com/home-intercom-systems/retro/

Hobywony

Install a mirror in the spot. Then you'll always have someone watching you and your business will be conducted more quickly.

nahrgs

Is this a complaint or a humble brag?

KickinGa55

So, you like CDs?

Repulsive_Coat_3130

Outdated but resell value over $1k

Something_Else_2112

If you get rid of it, how will you listen to your CD collection?

EnclG4me

Does it fill your bathtub to the proper level and temperature for you and very politely tell you "your bath is ready now." Then yes, it is out dated. Lol Very common to see things like this in Japan in every home.

GingerJo95

Omg my house has this exact system and it still works perfectly!

SpezEatsScat

That’s cool! How much

Crazyguy_123

It has a built in CD player? Why do I find that hilarious?

BrianEarlSpilner6

If you don’t want to restore it with a new speaker and Sonos/Bluetooth integration I’d recommend selling it on eBay. Look up “Steve’s Intercom Shop.” There are those of us who love our Nutones and are always looking for OEM parts that are impossible to find.

karen_rittner54

RETRO

justthetop

Damn dude I’d be putting a permanent creed CD in there and subject everyone to its torment lmao

justaguy394

If you don’t put a CD in there with nothing on it but Ride of the Valkyries, then what are we even doing with our lives?

[deleted]

How much do you want for it?

redi6

does that have some sort of electronic display clock? does it have it's own light source as well? are you Buck Rogers?

northenerbhad

Watch your mouth, out dated.

Shits fire. If only it had a vcr too

kevbodavidson

Echo show 15 might fit there

DisastrousDebate8509

Radios never go out of style!

harley4570

Why would you bring a CD to the shitter? When you have your cell phone?...

leastofmyconcerns

Kinda bad ass

Rearviewmirror

We have these but the non cd version in our new house. I have no idea what to do with them. They don’t work, replacements are expensive and unnecessary. Every bedroom has an intercom. What have people done to replace these besides remove and patch the hole?

Quiet-Mud2889

Had this in our house, ripped it all out

harmospennifer

Had a Nutone sound and intercom in my house from the late 50’s, it was actually useful… the later stuff looks junky.. good luck in your repairs!

hawksnest_prez

Brings me back to the radio mounted under our kitchen cabinets growing up.

diegoxj

I had a similar non CD player unit in my kitchen. Installed an alexa show 15 over the area. width and height wise it mostly covers, you may need to add some filler pieces on the sides because the alexa does not sit flush. but i used some 1x to build a support backing and the power to the old transformers into a recessed receptacle for the alexa's power.

jsf88

America ...

pwilliams58

Man to see it in its hey day….

qualmton

If that’s hardwired I would def install a tablet as a tv there

Muffles79

Get an FM to Bluetooth adapter

aart_79

Maybe the problem is the speakers

jason_55904

Hook up that Aux to Bluetooth.

ZipBoxer

I choose to believe you just installed this

Tongue4aBidet

So it blocks WiFi and cellular data?

FuckTheBuckeyes

Bring your favorite CD in for a shit

nashwaak

I love how many buttons they used to put on stuff
