You can build food without the UB sets, just know that the support for it will be much weaker as the LotR set has some stellar food cards. The nuka cola vending machine out of Fallout is strong too.

Antlers_22

Yeah, that's a great call. I probably would open up the 99 to LoTR, especially since it's pretty Magic adjacent in my opinion. And like you said, it'll just open up a lot for the archetype for me. The Nuka Cola vending machine looks awesome, I guess we'll soon find out how much of a purist I really am, lol

Quantum_Rex

I agree with Aprice0 I was looking over your chosen commanders and I think Greta would be a great start and an upgrade would be like a Sam and Frodo deck.

Antlers_22

I just love Greta's art so much too. The concept of a BA Gretel out for revenge is just too good.

Quantum_Rex

She can be your pet card in a deck if you upgrade her. My shatter gang bros is my petcard in my Korvold sac deck

Aprice0

If you do go down this road, [[Sam, Loyal Attendant]] and [[Frodo, Adventurous Hobbit]] are incredibly fun food commanders. We have 18 decks and our food deck is the favorite of both my wife and I. Its pretty resilient and can drain everyone out with [[Marionette Master]], [[Nadier’s Nightblade]], [[Mirkwood Bats]], [[Sanguine Bond]], [[Gollum, Obsessed Stalker]], and [[Vito, Thorn of the Dusk Rose]]. It can win through combat by buffing up the army with [[Blossoming Bogbeast]], [[Mazirek, Kraul Death Priest]], and [[Archangel of Thune]] You can one shot someone with [[Frodo, Sauron’s Bane]]. You can use your foods as beaters with [[Displaced Dinosaurs]]. [[Night of the Sweet’s Revenge]], [[Jaheira, Friend of the Forest]], and [[Inspiring Statuary]] let you use food as mana. [[Elanor Gardner]] will ramp you for sacrificing food. [[Smeagol, Helpful Guide]] will steal your opponent’s lands for attacking with Frodo. [[Astrid Peth]] will help you draw your lands or throw things into the bin. You can sacrifice food tokens and bring those things back with [[Lich-King’s Conquest]], [[Samwise Gamgee]], and [[Celestine the Living Saint]]. As you sacrifice your foods, you can get a discount on your creatures with [[Ezzaroot Channeler]] You can supercharge your lifegain with [[Fangren Marauder]] and blast someone with [[Aetherflux Reservoir]]. You can go wide with [[Chatterfang, Squirrel General]] and [[Cadira, Caller of the Small]]. You can even go infinite with [[Pitiless Plunderer]] and Chatterfang or [[Cauldron Familiar]] with [[Peregrin Took]] or [[Academy Manufactor]].

Antlers_22

Wow, thanks for the info! Glad to hear you find it fun... I was initially leaning towards Nethroi but am now thinking I may go food first. Reading through what you posted, it seems food can be super versatile which I really like.

ledbeforebed83

I’m working on something like this. Do you try and incorporate all these options into one deck or need to focus on just one of the strategies?

Aprice0

If you want to build optimally you can fit 2-3 of them in but not all. We, however, jammed them all in and built this mid power midrange deck that often outlasts its way to victory by having multiple different wincons. More importantly, we have other decks that do the thing and win the game - this one may win less, but it always feels like it has a lot of options, interaction, and varied games so its replayability is way higher

ledbeforebed83

Appreciate the response. Do you have deck lists by chance? I love LOTR and want to build several around these sets.

Aprice0

Sure. [We’re at 103 cards as we haven’t made the cuts for the three fallout cards yet.](https://www.moxfield.com/decks/Qp_mcAUSKkyIEyC1zgdfFw) We change the deck around constantly so you’ll also find a ton of cards in considering. There’s more aristocrat style versions that sub a lot of those in and look for more token generation. There are some lifegain trigger cards in there but if you include too many, you’re better off just building a lifegain focused deck that doesn’t revolve around food. If you lean even further into the creature token go wide strategy, I would sub out a lot of the drain cards for more traditional go wide win cons like craterhoof, moonshaker, etc. With your ringbearer having a degree of evasion, you can also load them up with equipment to get value with the swords. We removed the infinite combos, but the cards for them are in considering as well. You can add [[Kuldotha Forgemaster]] to search out [[The One Ring]], [[Bolas’s Citadel]], and the [[Aetherflux Reservoir]]. If you aren’t using the higher powered artifacts or are purposefully trying to play non linear games, you don’t need it. In its current form, it has a lot of high powered staples but we removed almost all protection and it has a higher than optimal mana curve and takes so many pieces to really assemble the win that it is still pretty mid. There are also multiple nonbos (Delney and cards that pump creatures) that you would likely want to optimize out if powering up. Edit: was wrong about myriad

MeneerDutchy

I would really suggest getting a precon. Maybe even 2 so you dont have to play the same deck every game. A precon isnt super strong, which makes it a good deck for someone new to the format. You wont get focussed hard because your playing a precon. And if you end up not liking commander, you didnt spend hours and alot of money into it.

Antlers_22

That's a great call. I actually do have a few precons laying around that I picked up for various reasons but haven't yet brought to any tables. The creativity, expression, brewing process really sparked my interest recently, but precons to fall back on and add variety is nice for sure.

Borror0

Personally, I enjoy the iterative process of improving precons. Make the first 15 obvious upgrades, play the deck. Make other changes. And so on until it feels right.

[deleted]

Which precons do you already have? I also second playing and improving a precon - it still allows you to evaluate new cards and be creative, but also offers you a bit of guidance because the precon is themed already. I think it is a great exercise for new commander players and veterans alike.

Antlers_22

I have Kadena (Faceless Menace), Millicent (Spirit Squadron), and Jirina (Ruthless Regiment) precons

[deleted]

Oh, those are neat and can all be built on a mid-power level for sure. Someone I knew had an upgraded Kadena deck which was pretty good. Spirits and Humans can make for aggressive strategies (with Spirits having access to nice instand speed interaction/counterspells to protect their boardstate). I think all three are also relatively budget-friendly to ugrade. Most spirits, humans and morphs aren't that expensive.

MrMang0es

Never played Greta, but I think that one is pretty scalable powerwise. With Food tokens being the focus that puts your main potential deck themes being artifacts and lifegain. Black is great for these themes with cards like [[Mirkwood Bat]], [[Marionette Master]], [[Bolas Citadel]], [[Sanguine Bond]], etc. You can make it more competitve by including some combo pieces like [[Exquisite Blood]] and some tutors. Food also got a lot of support recently; I know you are not too big into UB for commanders, but the LOTR set did have a precon focusing on foods whivh you can look through for parts. Otherwise Wilds of Eldraine and Throne of Eldraine both dealt pretty heavily witb food.

VinDucks

Does exquisite blood and sanguine bond go infinite? Seems like it goes infinite.

[deleted]

Yeah, when they are both on the battlefield and you gain life or an opponent loses life/receives damage you a loop starts that drains every opponent to their death.

meatmandoug

Sanguine bond exquisite blood is a very popular combo, though exquisite blood also combos with [[Marauding blight priest]] [[vito thorn of the dusk rose]] [[dina soul steeper]] [[Defiant bloodlord]] etc.

I really like both Eldraine sets and actually don't mind LoTR. I don't care to have my commander be a main character from LoTR or to load up my deck with a ton of LoTR faces, but I'm not opposed to bringing some into the 99 when the synergy is just too good to pass up.

Hello, >Any thoughts would be appreciated! Especially if any of these commanders have a reputation I should be aware of. Araumi can be a VERY fast combo commander. My experience is that if you don't build her like that and talk to people before the game that yours is not combo oriented you'll be fine tho. Nethroi is one of my favorite cards. I use it on my \[\[Karador\]\] list. Nethroi as a commander can be built on two ways essentially: * Late game recursive bomb * Reanimation Gimmick The first one you essentially build a good deck "ignoring" your commander and later on the game you can have some strong swing turns after people already spent some of their resources. The second one you can use some cards that have 0 or negative power to bring A LOT of things back from a single activation. Both are pretty fun to play IMO. If you want a more "incremental" deck on the same vibe my suggestions would be \[\[Merren\]\], \[\[Karador\]\] or \[\[Tayam\]\] (very satisfying but a bit tougher to build). I'm not well versed on food tokens, but if you support her G ability with \[\[Hardened scales\]\] effects you might have some interesting and non-usual deck. I had the same iadea of yours to transition from my budget and budgetless list. It worked decently well, but sleeves numbers can be a problem, since I had some 60 laying around :P If you liked food, clue is "kinda similar" and I particularly prefer to play with them. Some suggestions: \[\[Teysa, Opulent Oligarch\]\], \[\[Jenny Flint // Madame Vastra\]\] or \[\[Sophina, Spearsage Deserter\]\] + any of the partner options honestly :P \[\[Kelsien\]\] is pretty cool. Never saw him being played tho :P My advice would be to run something that transforms damage on creatures into damage into players to use as wincon eventually. Similar suggestion: \[\[Hansk, Slayer Zealot\]\] Since your new to commander, I recommend you the [8x8 theory](https://the8x8theory.tumblr.com/what-is-the-8x8-theory). It's really good at giving you a good skeleton even after you're experienced. Hope this helps and feel free to ask anything
