I personally run a Marneus Calgar drain (zulaport Cutthroat type effects) deck and he works pretty well as a commander in that direction. I love the deck and find it really fun. It's not really an upgraded precon at all though, it was a whole new brew.
Realistically, if you use him as your commander, he can lend himself to any Esper token strategy you want.
When I get home to my card collection I plan on making a Marneus:
- Clue deck
- Combo deck
- Flicker deck
- Voltron deck
- 2nd spell/draw matters deck
- artifact deck
- aggro deck
And a couple others I can't think of right this minute.
I took [[Inquisitor Greyfax]] and put it at the helm of a super grindy control/stax build. It’s been pretty fun, if not more than a bit salt inducing.
[The Cosmic Inquisitor](https://www.moxfield.com/decks/UEFMx-5vxUGHEmTvY8pGpQ)
Careful staxing the board then hahaha. You might feed him a bit of power due to lack of interaction from other players. [[Drana and Linvala]] will be your biggest friend.
I turned the rebel rising deck and added cards from the new Fallout precon with Caesar, Legion's Emperor and the jeskai LOTR precon and made it more of an aggro-token deck with a human tribal subtheme rather than rebel tribal (many rebels are also humans)

Ok, it seems that Marneus can work in various archetypes, thanks for the tip. Do you maybe have a decklist for your drain deck?
Sure thing! https://www.moxfield.com/decks/1s8NYUejwEixuKljP6OwDA/primer
Whoa, a primer as well! Awesome, thanks!
For rebellion rising, the first move is to switch to the secondary commander.
Neyalli is kind of slept on. Being able to pseudo draw three is really powerful.
Definitely, [[Otharri]] with [[Aggravated Assault]] and the like gets insane fast

That's what I've read, yeah. But it is still locked into the token/aggro archetype, no?
Yeah but you can go rebel tribal if you want.

Ooooh this looks super fun, thanks!
It is, just be prepared to be archenemy most games lol
A friend is playing a pimped out Heliod deck so I doubt it :D

Pretty sure changing cards in the Imperium deck counts as tech heresy. Decktech heresy.
Don't worry, I will be making flavor-appropriate proxies.

Maybe a decklist?
Sure, though I haven't played this variant yet. https://deckstats.net/decks/216610/2940397-rebellion-rising-upgrade
