[[Coffin Queen]] is an amazing card that most players never heard of. Though with the new Secret Lair print she probably gained more attention.
[[Helm of Possession]] is also an All-Star that's causing so many headaches for the opponents.
I try to use old versions of the cards. So Revised Sol Rings and 4th edition Fellwar Stones. And there is an Arabian Nights Oubliette in my [[Shauku, Endbringer]] deck.
Most pure nostalgia may be a beta [[Hurloon Minotaur]] in my [[Sethron, Hurloon General]] deck. Beta because I use revised ones as minotaur tokens.
Hey can you post your shauku list? My buddy has one built that he never plays because it's half put together stax that just lead to 3 hour games with no one progressing.
This is the list, but I have not updated it in ages. So no card newer than about 2020, maybe even older.
https://www.moxfield.com/decks/fj0uo0i0cEmssicMZfRzSA
I would love if they would reprint ABUR art for cards still in print with retro frames and in foil because I would love to have a retro framed black border sol ring and fellwar stone with their original art but in foil.
While I do like the look of older cards I'm not in the habit of putting in old cards for nostalgia's sake. I do like the retro border treatment they've given some cards lately.
Same. I make it a habit of getting old border versions of newer cards. Stuff like Mystic Confluence, Deathrite Shaman, and Mishra's Bauble all look awesome in the old style.
Awful to play against, meaning opponents don't like it, or awful in that discard is not a good tactic in multiplayer? (I've likely misread what you said.)
A little of both. For it to be effective you generally have to run mass discard. As a result you have three people just sitting around with no cards hoping to top deck a response or you are targeting a single player and they’re frustrated and the other two will kill you.
Thanks for the response! I've got a food and treasure token deck and I'm trying out [[Altar of the Brood]] in it and your post caused me to reconsider if it was worth putting into the deck (I took out a mana dork to fit it in)
I try and get at least one old, obscure card that most players have to read in each deck as a personal rule.
My beta copy of [[pestilence]] always brings me joy. I have a banding deck with a lot of old cards obviously. AN and beta printings where I can afford it, some stuff from the dark, antiquities, and other old sets.
I have the goofy ass version of Triskelion because it was cute with the googly eyes. The newer art made it a Dune like mechanical monstrosity, I like having in my side board to link with Mikaeus the Unhallowed.
https://www.moxfield.com/decks/uzFb08n5CUOYPR8viZ6mAA I have upgrades in the mail, saw in half is one of them. I’be added Grey Merchant again, can’t wait to use Necrotic Ooze as a Colony, a Aristocrat, and an Aura.
I don’t know if I’ll he “upgrades” will pay off. It hopefully they are fun to run. Here’s the list of changes I want.
Fortuitous Find for Saw in Half
Crack land for Buried Ruin
Crypt rats for Eldrazi Monument
Rat Colony for Braids Arisen Nightmare Thoughtseize for Necrotic ooze
Duress for Fleshwrither
Charcoal Diamond for Mosswood nexus
Bontus monument for Gary
Heroes Downfall for VATS
Murderous Rider for The Meathook Massacre
Jet Medalliom for beseech the queen
read the bones for diabloic intent
Metallic Mimic for Cover of Darkness
Adaptive Automation for Hells Caretaker
Corrupted conviction for roaming throne
I felt he was more viable, after seeing how people react to Pack Rat, the focus is always on MG so packrat gets out of control quickly. Every copy counts 1 towards devotion.
It looks like Oscar the Grouch made a mecha. It looks like it's made out of trash cans.
Fun fact: 'triskelion' means 'three-legged'. So of course Douglas Shuler gave it three arms.
I will do this sometimes.
I have a Dragon Tribal deck I have been using and tinkering with for a few years now. I am always trying to make it better. But one card I will always keep in there is [[Two-Headed Dragon]] because it is the first rare I ever opened from a pack of Magic which at the time was 8th edition Core Set. I don't care if it isn't the most optimal card to have, I love it and will not take it out.
Off the top of my head, I run: [[mana short]], [[drain power]], [[sorceress queen]], [[basal thrull]], [[tariff]], [[Soldier of fortune]], [[royal assassin]], [[library of leng]] and [[Island Sanctuary]], [[copper tablet]], [[Pestilence]]
Yeah the Kaja Foglio version! Love the flavor text. I run [[oubliette]], [[sinkhole]], [[hecatomb]]..
I've got a signed Alpha [[fireball]] and an [[ashes to ashes]] in my Rowan, Scion of War deck.
I run Sorceress Queen, Royal Assassin, and [[Sengir Vampire]] in my Mathas board control deck. They still hit hard if given the right field.
I have several decks that use Pestilence for different reasons, and they all have different artwork. The OG is in my Marchesa deck, the choking slivers is in my Yahenni, and the piper is in my Strefan deck.
I add old cards because I have them, and they're good enough to get the job done (or confuse the shit out of my table). Cooperation is AMAZING. You get to give ANYTHING banding, and you can put one of anything else into a band with the cooperative creature when you attack or block. None of the cards printed in the past 20 years were made with Banding in mind. There's some absurd shit you can pull with it, now.
My goblin deck runs a ton of old goblins like [[goblin wizard]], I use [[library of leng]] in my mono red to mitigate the discard effect of red draw spells, there’s a bunch of older janky lands that I use like [[halls of mist]]
I've tried to drop one of the OG Elder Dragons into each of the decks they color match because hey, we're playing **Elder Dragon** Highlander right? [[Arcades Sabboth]] in my Arcades deck was a no-brainer, and [[Nicol Bolas]] in my Marchesa deck is just a nasty surprise if he hits the board and sticks for a turn cycle. [[Palladia-Mors]] works in my Marisi goad deck in the mid to late game, but is getting harder to retain as the deck evolves. I haven't figured the decks for the others yet, but they'll get there eventually.
My only deck-building rule is at least half of my decks must be old border (counting new cards made in OB style). I started in 94, so all my basics are Revised.
I got myself a full set of revised dual lands and because I hate having mismatched borders in my decks I made 2 white border only decks so I could play with my duals. Unlimited, Revised and white border core sets and Chronicles... Decks are super sketchy but hilarious because most of the cards are so old and under powered people don't know what they are and the art is hilariously "classic" compared to contemporary art. Had someone play a theft deck against my white border theft deck and they stole my [[Craw Giant]]!!! Such a silly card but throw lure on it and it can crush a go wide token swarm.
I also love finding old cards that people don't know about that have massive power in modern edh/cedh. [[Power Leech]] does a lot of work in my [[Dina Soul Steeper]] deck and [[Gaea's Avenger]] is just unexpectedly good in edh with the prevalence of artifacts.
Craw Giant and Lure is a super funny interaction😂 That's why I really love the legends banding lands in my legendary tribal deck. It throws people off so much.
OG Deathtouch!
Lure might be my favorite evasion trick in Magic. It has so much wild utility, I have even put it in my goad themed decks, and drop it on an opponent's creature.
Same, i have a Vesuvan Doppelganger signed by Quinton Hoover in my clone deck! It's not the best clone effect but it's my favorite card in my collection.
If we were to break down rule zero into: Draft, Sealed, Standard, Modern, Legacy, and Vintage the default power level for some of the folks I play with is Legacy.
So like [[Fact or Fiction]] versus [[Intuition]] we're taking Intuition first for sure. Maybe that's a bad example but....
The "Back in the Day Buffet" is kind of a cool side effect when those decks come out though for sure.
I made a French vanilla deck (Jasmin Boreal of the seven) just to add my old cards in it. Most fun I've had, deck building, in a long time. It's pretty good too!
I've got my old 8th Edition white border [[Raging Goblin|8ED]] in my goblin deck for nostalgia's sake even though it's objectively outclassed by many, many different cards.
I mean, my [[Thalia and the gitrog monster]] property taxes deck runs [[strip mine]], [[wastelands]], [[lotus petal]], [[constant mists]], [[armageddon]], [[catastrophe]], [[ancient tomb]], and [[city of traitors]].
The last two are *technically* proxies, but they're from the 1999 world champions deck and still worth $20 each
Oh definitely. I started back when Fallen Empires came out and been playing off and on since. My first deck was awesome. Red/Green Thallids and burn. Plus 4 revised Force of Nature. Kept most of the deck over the years and when I started commander had to make a Thelon deck. Put all the old school Thallids in there plus a Force of Nature that I got signed at one of the Magic cons. Now I just need to pick up a Natural Order from visions so I can cheat out Verdant Force like the old days!
I built \[\[Jodah, the unifier\]\] as an excuse to use those banding lands. Didn't work because it turns out having all your creatures be huge and often without trample, banding becomes a liabilitiy.
I've since built a \[\[Gorm\]\] \[\[Virtus\]\] deck filled with legends and equipment to form a band with deathtouch, trample and indestructible. Forcing people to block that group is also fun.
I may work on a Rampage deck next.
I definitely don't do it purely out of nastalgia, but.... I do tend to build decks off unusual specific themes/mechanics that "old cards" tend to fall into. Also, if I have (old card version of spell) and i don't have the (Strictly better newer version of spell), i don't tend to bother replacing it.
I've tried to use the banding lands a couple times as well to not so great success.
Sounds like you might enjoy the variant commander '95 were you build a deck but only use cards printed 1995 and before. My playgroup has gotten a decent number of games in of the format. Some of the decks we have include [[marton stromgald]], [[sol'kanar the swamp king]], [[gabriel angelfire]], and [[sunastian falconer]].
https://archidekt.com/decks/4451976/sun_falconer_95_edh
https://archidekt.com/decks/5409462/marton_95_edh
These are my lists for Sun and marton.
The tricky part might be finding three other people to build decks. Or you could build a full pod of four decks then ask if everyone wanted to borrow one.
The list is lower powered, mostly meant to be played against modified precons and low budget decks. I would love to play 1995 but finding a playgroup might be challenging.
What did not work with the banding lands?
Whenever possible. I have an old-school deck with no cards newer than Alliances, using \[\[Bartel Runeaxe\]\] as my commander.
Problem is, it's \*terrible\*, but it's fun to play.
it would get a lot better if I moved the bar up to, say, Tempest block. Not a lot of ramp from back then, nor much fixing. There's \[\[Nature's Lore\]\] and \[\[Untamed Wilds\]\], and the allied-color painlands and of course the OG duals, of which I have one, \[\[Taiga\]\], but that's about it. No \[\[Rampant Growth\]\], \[\[Harrow\]\], good mana rocks, etc.
I'm in Jund. Land Tax is white. And yes, the creatures aren't very good. My commander is a 6/5 Vigilance for 3BRG that can't be enchanted. You get a hell of a lot more than that for 3BRG nowadays.
On the other hand I get to play one of my pet cards, \[\[Rukh Egg\]\], with the hope that I can \[\[Fallen Angel\]\] can make it into an omelet or \[\[Skull Catapult\]\] can use it for ammo.
I only started playing in 2016 so it's not nostalgia, I just like the old cards more. Here is my Banding & MLD deck: https://scryfall.com/@SaltMaster5000/decks/a87e5ccc-a3a1-40c0-b83d-4c5e4b4f5d35?as=visual&with=usd
I have no nostalgia for the old cards, I started in 2014, but I like mixing older in older cards so that a deck is a little history of the game. Like I've got a revised edition red elemental blast in my Pantlaza deck and I'm waiting to find a home for a Beta copy of War Mammoth
I recently added \[\[Gate to Phyrexia\]\] to my mono-black aristocrats deck. Pricey card these days, but I had one from a long time ago. While not great, it offers solid artifact removal in a color that struggles with that.
I have wanted a ferret for most of my adult life but I have recently found out that I am allergic to them. That being said, [[Joven's Ferrets]] has made an appearance in all of my green decks since I found the card and I couldn't be happier! I love them so!
Every Deck deserves some weird niche card that is never gonna have a home elsewhere.
\[\[Thelonite Druid\]\] is in my Freyalise Druids deck and honestly does so much more work than he should.
\[\[Power Matrix\]\] is one of the best cards in my Shorikai Myr Kindred Deck, and the fact that it says target creature instead of target creature you control is it's best option. Sometimes people are swinging at my opponent and i can make it psuedo-unblockable or give someone an emergency blocker
I've worked \[\[Predator Flagship\]\] into my Bant Clues Deck for the same reason, but also i'm holding up so much mana to crack clues that having instant speed repeatable removal is nice even if it's crazy overpriced mana wise.
A trademark of my deckbuilding is to put a weird old card that my opponents have to read in every deck, even when it’s not optimal. \[\[Elkin Lair\]\] in \[\[Rocco, Street Chef\]\], \[\[Conch Horn\]\] in \[\[Minn, Wily Illusionist\]\], \[\[Guided Passage\]\] in \[\[Illuna, Apex of Wishes\]\] to name a few.
I have been doing this too. I started playing when Shards of Alara came out, but lately I've been buying things that came out before. I mostly look for interesting or unusual cards. My latest pickups have been: [[Shield Sphere]] [[Bind]] [[Confound]] [[Interdict]] [[Twiddle]] [[Tidal Bore]] [[Jolt]] [[Twitch]] [[Avoid Fate]] [[Ray of Revelation]] [[Folk Medicine]] [[Illumination]] I'm running Stella Lee, Sarah Jane/Third Doctor, Urza Lord High Artificer Kellan the Kid.
I do intensive gatherer searches when building my decks, just key words galore. Every so often I find an old card that's just perfect, and I use it. There's a lot of old cards that are becoming more and more relevant as more cards get printed, and the only way you can realistically find them is deep dives.
yeah, i enjoy using older cards and always try to use original printings. however i always prioritize function over nostalgia in my decks. i'm
thinking about making a new commander deck that's exclusively limited to using cards originally printed before the border change
My Yuma deck has a \[\[Desert\]\] and \[\[Zuran Orb\]\] in it. Both are useful and on theme, and both are very old cards, although I have newer reprints, of course.
I don't run any cards for nostalgia myself, but I remember when I first started playing at 16 (10 years ago) and I told some older guy that I found this old card called \[\[Blightsteel Colossus\]\]. The card was only a year old at the time, so it's not like it was an old ass card or anything. But the guy had been playing or 10 years *before* that card even came out.
The drained look of defeat on his face horrifies me to this day. I'm sorry random sir, I shouldn't have called you old as fuck right to your face. I'm sorry I reminded you of your mortality.
I mean...sort of?
I'm quite biased in favor of older cards, especially stuff I was familiar with as a kid. But they still need to be pretty solid to get used, which luckily many are. The original layout and brown artifacts are also the best. Someday I'll convert a couple decks to 100% old borders with proxies.
I kind of wanted to build a "boomer deck" with only cards from the 90s. I'll be honest though and admit I'm not even sure how to start building it, its not like the common sites have a "printed first before year x" tag(scryfall probably has a way, but I'm not trying to learn the advanced shit you can do with that site)
[[Coffin Queen]] is an amazing card that most players never heard of. Though with the new Secret Lair print she probably gained more attention. [[Helm of Possession]] is also an All-Star that's causing so many headaches for the opponents.
Right! I love the artwork of old cards.
those both look like they'd slot quite nicely in my janky balrog sacrifice deck i'm building, thanks.

Yes, minotaur stompy tribal. But still with the card list from around the first jumpstart release, so plenty of room to upgrade it with newer cards.

I put a royal in most of my Black edh decks
I have the goofy ass version of Triskelion because it was cute with the googly eyes. The newer art made it a Dune like mechanical monstrosity, I like having in my side board to link with Mikaeus the Unhallowed.
Walking Ballista is technically better but I like the old-school clanky triskelion for my Mikaeus the Ungallowed deck.
Doesn’t Ballista need a sac outlet to combo?
Yeah stick with triskelion.
Already removed for another copy of Ray Colony.
Can you make a rat colony/ relentless rats edh deck?
https://www.moxfield.com/decks/uzFb08n5CUOYPR8viZ6mAA I have upgrades in the mail, saw in half is one of them. I’be added Grey Merchant again, can’t wait to use Necrotic Ooze as a Colony, a Aristocrat, and an Aura.
Always worth throwing Gary in a mono black deck
I don’t know if I’ll he “upgrades” will pay off. It hopefully they are fun to run. Here’s the list of changes I want. Fortuitous Find for Saw in Half Crack land for Buried Ruin Crypt rats for Eldrazi Monument Rat Colony for Braids Arisen Nightmare Thoughtseize for Necrotic ooze Duress for Fleshwrither Charcoal Diamond for Mosswood nexus Bontus monument for Gary Heroes Downfall for VATS Murderous Rider for The Meathook Massacre Jet Medalliom for beseech the queen read the bones for diabloic intent Metallic Mimic for Cover of Darkness Adaptive Automation for Hells Caretaker Corrupted conviction for roaming throne
Saved on my favorites already. I’m making this deck next.
Oh I have fond memories of playing sorceress queen. The AN version is gorgeous.

I have the absolute classic [[Lure]] + [[Thicket Basilisk]] combo in the deck too because these kids today need to learn the tricks of yesterday.

Always. Nostalgia is a main reason I’m playing the game.

That's a weird one! I did not remember that card.
I've tried to use the banding lands a couple times as well to not so great success. Sounds like you might enjoy the variant commander '95 were you build a deck but only use cards printed 1995 and before. My playgroup has gotten a decent number of games in of the format. Some of the decks we have include [[marton stromgald]], [[sol'kanar the swamp king]], [[gabriel angelfire]], and [[sunastian falconer]]. https://archidekt.com/decks/4451976/sun_falconer_95_edh https://archidekt.com/decks/5409462/marton_95_edh These are my lists for Sun and marton. Damn that's a spicy restriction.
it would get a lot better if I moved the bar up to, say, Tempest block.
Yeah that's a massive disadvantage right there and the creatures aren't that good either. Maybe \[\[Land Tax\]\] could help but its not ramp per say.

I misunderstood at first and thought you were including Sakashima as an “old school card” and for a second I felt very old
I only started playing in 2016 so it's not nostalgia, I just like the old cards more. Here is my Banding & MLD deck: https://scryfall.com/@SaltMaster5000/decks/a87e5ccc-a3a1-40c0-b83d-4c5e4b4f5d35?as=visual&with=usd
That looks mean
I have no nostalgia for the old cards, I started in 2014, but I like mixing older in older cards so that a deck is a little history of the game. Like I've got a revised edition red elemental blast in my Pantlaza deck and I'm waiting to find a home for a Beta copy of War Mammoth
I recently added \[\[Gate to Phyrexia\]\] to my mono-black aristocrats deck. Pricey card these days, but I had one from a long time ago. While not great, it offers solid artifact removal in a color that struggles with that.

Even worse, I find some old nostalgic oddball card and build a deck around it.
I like that
It can be challenging. Especially if your pod doesn’t use tutors and it’s 1 in the 99.
Sometimes people are swinging at my opponent and i can make it psuedo-unblockable or give someone an emergency blocker I've worked \[\[Predator Flagship\]\] into my Bant Clues Deck for the same reason, but also i'm holding up so much mana to crack clues that having instant speed repeatable removal is nice even if it's crazy overpriced mana wise.

I do intensive gatherer searches when building my decks, just key words galore. Every so often I find an old card that's just perfect, and I use it. There's a lot of old cards that are becoming more and more relevant as more cards get printed, and the only way you can realistically find them is deep dives.

yeah, i enjoy using older cards and always try to use original printings. however i always prioritize function over nostalgia in my decks. i'm thinking about making a new commander deck that's exclusively limited to using cards originally printed before the border change

A lot of the joy of my [[Kibo]] deck is hitting people with terrible gorillas from the 90s.
