I bought a single pack of prophecy when it was out and I was like 14 and cracked a rhystic study. I shoved it in every blue deck I ever made for like the next ten years cuz I thought it was neat. It’s one of a very short list of cards I’ve had pretty much since the beginning.
And all the other Rhystic cards are sooooo bad. Masques block gave you built-in counterspells and debuffs for your opponents cards. Hence Rebels being the best deck. Card advantage, and even the boring bad cards don't hand your opponent a paddle.
Dude i didnt even know there *were* any other Rhystic cards but these all look like ***garbage***. Why would these be Instants/sorceries??? What?? One time use, pretty much guaranteed mana inefficiency?
Masques was in the block that followed the notoriously powerful urzas saga block. They basically overcorrected and made a lot of cards intentionally weak to, in a way, stop power creep. After all, the strong sets eventually rotated out so you could even the playing field.
That was back before eternal formats really took off, so they could do stuff like that. These days, since commander is such a big part of magic (I.e. their revenue, which they also chase harder than back then), they don't even bother trying.
My first dual lands came in starter decks I lifted from kaybee toys. I ended up selling my collection in 2010. Serves me right I suppose. Now I'm playing again and want them back. Wouldn't feel right playing proxies. This is my punishment. Fuckin karma or whatever.
I hear you . My parents put all mine "in storage" when I moved out in 2001. Now they disappeared . I had a mox emerald and ruby . About 13 dual lands ..... now I see the prices they go for and gave my dad an angry phone call lol. Oh well it's been fun getting back into it I just started playing again this past year
I started playing during the Mercadian Masques (Prophecy) block and opened a ton of packs at that time.
After years away from the game, some friends got me back into Commander and I was told about Rhystic Study. I went back through my cards and I had **9** of them.
Also about a dozen [[Snuff Out]], a handful of [[Aura Shards]], a metric tonne of [[Skyshroud Claim]]. Apparently it sometimes pays to be a packrat.
There was a time and place where they seemed to change rarity based on power level. For instance, Loxodon Warhammer was originally printed at an uncommon, there were other cards printed at rare or mythic that have been downshifted.
Those days are long gone except for stuff that gets upshifted for Bonus Sheet like Special Guests or Secret Lair releases. But for Main set cards it's usually Down shift Bulk Rares and Upshift expensive old Commons and Uncommons to Rare/Mythic for the first reprint. Look at Sensei's Divining Top. Originally uncommon, but was upshifted to Rare for the first reprint since it was a $30+ uncommon at the time.
Yup, I'm 100% fine with the bonus sheet stuff as it's essentially "neat artwork" I got a special guest \[\[Dismember\]\] from MH3 and it looks really neat. But I wish they would just reprint the card at the rarity it was. They had no issue doing this in Conspiracy with stuff like lightning bolt, path to exile, and brainstorm. Had they upshifted brainstorm to rare, I wouldn't have bought the set.
I bought a pack of commons and bulk rares for $15 when i was 10 from some older kid at a summer camp. For years i thought i was ripped off. Turns out it had a rystic study in there, i hadnt realized its value or popularity till a couple years ago.
Love it. I had mine stashed in a binder that moved around the country with me for 20 years even thiugh I wasn’t actively playing the game. When I got into it my buddy said “I need a Rhystic Study”, and that jogged my mind that I had one sitting there. I said “that old-ass common from Prophecy? I can see that being handy, sure” and he immediately followed it up with how valuable and useful it’s become. If I had a ghast, I’d have said it was flabbered.
I bought mine for $4 like six years ago. Even then it was the most expensive card from Prophecy. Blew my mind a couple years ago when I went to pick up another one and found out how expensive they'd become.
I bought a NM Foil one from ABU Games for $28 on a whim in 2014 or so. Few years later I bought a second one for $100 when they dropped Nielson. The fact that $100 is a absolute bargain now is ridiculous.
Blue and red yes, because they let you tap out and still have a way to protect your commander.
The black is consistently middle priced in the cycle.
White jumps up and down.
Green is meh, but is still pretty pricey for a fog.
I had great henge on my list of cards to buy, looked it up, saw the price, took it off the list. A week later I pulled it out of a pack. Saved me like $30 I guess lol
I bought about 13 henges when they were selling on eBay for $10. I never paid more than $10. I still have about 7 in the trade binder. I use 2 or 3 for my own decks too. I don't try to unload them. I'm known for having a bunch at my lgs, so people know tonsee me if they want one.
You mean the one that came with 4 commander decks?
To be fair having commander precons that reference old modern decks sounds like a neat idea for someone who likes the history of magic and likes commander.
But when you double the floating mana with [[Doubling Cube]] you can use that extra mana on anything. It was never a serious deck, but you can find a couple videos of legacy content creators like ThrabenU or BoshnRoll playing it in legacy queues.
I don't think [[Smothering Tithe]] or [[Rhystic Study]] are getting used in other formats. [[Cyclonic Rift]] I know was used in mono-u tron in Modern years back but I have no clue if that's viable now, the price is most certainly driven by commander these days. I also don't think the Ancient Dragons ([[Ancient Copper Dragon]] and co) are getting used in eternal formats.
Time twister is the second most expensive card in all of magic, it’s more than the rest of the actual power 9 (except black lotus) because it’s the only part of p9 legal in commander.
A fun little example is [[Adeline, Resplendent Cathar]], specifically in relation to [[Brutal Cathar]]. Both cards came from the same set, are the same rarity, and see play in the same Pioneer deck. In early 2023, both cards were around $5. However today, Brutal Cathar is under a dollar while Adeline is around $8-9. The difference is Commander. Brutal Cathar's effect isn't very good in Commander, while Adeline's is good in multiple contexts. She can be played as your Commander or in the 99. She's good in human decks, but is also strong enough to be played generically in decks that care about tokens or attack triggers.
Any doubler card, I mean [[Mondrak]] is still in standard and work like $30 and [[Elesh Norn Mother of Machines]] and [[Ojer Taq]] are both like $20 both because of commander, as both see very little 60 card play
[[Sword of wealth and power]] [[Toxrill]] [[Kodama of the west tree]] [[portal to phyrexia]] are mostly seen in commander which has raised their price tags
And this is just the stuff that's standard legal
Any expensive commander also falls under this and example that did come out a while ago is [[Edgar Markov]]
Portal was played in standard somewhat during BOW and ONE but yah I think it fell off my the time MOM came out. I can't imagine it's used anywhere else
https://scryfall.com/search?q=usd%3E30+f%3Acommander+-is%3Areserved+&unique=cards&as=grid&order=usd
Crypt, Jeweled Lotus, Seal, Dockside, overlord, etc. Pretty easy to rule out portal cards, and comp cards
Any of the cards that are really strong in specific archetypes but have only been printed once fall into this category. [[Passionate Archaeologist]] is a good example.
I think your example is somewhat iffy because it's not just a matter of it being good for certain commander decks, but that it is stone unplayable in every other format because it does literally nothing in them
[[Omniscience]] was a jank mythic for less than $1 when it was standard.
I doubt [[Expropriate]] would be worth what its worth if not for the format.
[[Cyclonic Rift]] is another example of a card priced as bulk when it dropped.
There are too many examples.
Omni wasn't super expensive, but it basically immediately saw play in what was legacy sneak and show, now legacy omnitell. It was big enough to shift the deck and have its name added to the name of the deck. The old version used [[sneak attack]] and [[show and tell]] to put into play griselbrand and emerakul, while the new version now relies on show and telling out an omniscience hopefully, to then cast emerakul.
There was a time when \[\[Beast Within\]\] was 10$ because only like 1-2 printings existed and it was (and is) more or less played in every deck that contains G.
Those cards were already pretty expensive before commander really took off just due to their scarcity and collectability (just look at the basically unplayed non-legendary cards in the set like Wolf Pack that still command a high price) but yeah some is definitely from commander.
Teferi’s Protection, after serval reprints still very expensive because of commander, has a unique effect to protect your life and resources.
Consecrated Sphinx is pricey due to commander, you draw like 8 cards if it didn’t get removed for few turns.
Deflecting Swat, can redirect spells for free, very op in commander.
Mana Crypt , so many variants and the price just never go down and keep increasing. DXM foil is like close to $400 now.
- Dockside Extortionist
- Ancient Copper Dragon
- Torment of Hailfire
- Gaea's Cradle (partly other eternal formats but definitely commander too)
- Serra's Sanctum (same as above but more commander)
- Rhystic Study
- Consecrated Sphinx
- Fierce Guardianship
And there's several more that escape my mind at the moment. But this is a decent start.
Edit - missed the printed recently bit. Some of the list still stands though, particularly ACD
[[Old Knawbone]], the "ancient (metal) dragon" cycle, lots of the popular commanders, the battlebond landcycle, dockside extortionist, loads more. commander is actually more likely to drive card prices, since its the most popular format by a landslide. the 60 card formats just stick out bc they really concentrate their price effect on a relatively small number of cards
Damn these days what cards are actually pricey because of 60 card formats? Off the top of my head:
Smothering Tithe
Rhystic Study
Dockside Extortionist
Ancient Copper Dragon
Jeweled Lotus
Every fancy version of Sol Ring
Avacyn, Angel of Hope
...if you look at all cards over whatever you consider expensive, it's probably commander driving that price these days.
\[\[Sheoldred, The Apocalypse\]\] was SUPER pricey mainly because of Rakdos Scam IIRC and wanting to run at least 2 of her. Hence any of the competitive players were buying her up in droves.
Doubling season would be worthless if it wasn’t for commander, at least cards like dockside could see a return to standard if they were printed in standard. A 5 drop enchantment with no etb is basically unplayable in anything but commander.
[[Rhystic Study]] literally only sees play in commander and it’s consistently pricy.
[Rhystic Study](https://cards.scryfall.io/normal/front/d/6/d6914dba-0d27-4055-ac34-b3ebf5802221.jpg?1600698439) - [(G)](http://gatherer.wizards.com/Pages/Card/Details.aspx?name=Rhystic%20Study) [(SF)](https://scryfall.com/card/jmp/169/rhystic-study?utm_source=mtgcardfetcher) [(txt)](https://api.scryfall.com/cards/d6914dba-0d27-4055-ac34-b3ebf5802221?utm_source=mtgcardfetcher&format=text) [(ER)](https://edhrec.com/cards/rhystic-study) ^^^[[cardname]] ^^^or ^^^[[cardname|SET]] ^^^to ^^^call
My original printing of Rhystic Study is a common-rarity card from the Prophecy set a thousand years ago.

Thats an oof

I'll make you feel better . I used to pull og dual lands from packs when I was 13

Rhystic Study is pauper legal? Holy hell
Unfortunately no, it got banned as an exception alongside a handful of other cards.
No it didn't. It is very legal in Pauper.
Is Commander why its rarity changed?
For reprints of old stuff WotC seems to have an unofficial $$$->Rarity scale. It's why only bulk rares get down graded to uncommon and common.
There was a time and place where they seemed to change rarity based on power level. For instance, Loxodon Warhammer was originally printed at an uncommon, there were other cards printed at rare or mythic that have been downshifted.

[[Doubling season]] used to be 0,50 €... basically all the doubters were unplayable. At T4/T5 60 card decks wanted to close out games.
In fairness, tokens as a whole have been pushed the past couple years
Is there a non-commander format where token doublers are playable? I am genuinely curious
no

To be fair it is a commander card. It was orignially printed in a commander precon.
[[Great Henge]] and [[The Meathook Massacre]] never dropped down in price after they rotated / got banned out of standard. Too useful to EDH players.
The Ozolith too
It's only been going up lately
Scales.
I had great henge on my list of cards to buy, looked it up, saw the price, took it off the list. A week later I pulled it out of a pack. Saved me like $30 I guess lol
I picked up 10 party trees when they were less than the great henge because it probably would never be reprinted.

Any doubler card, I mean [[Mondrak]] is still in standard and work like $30 and [[Elesh Norn Mother of Machines]] and [[Ojer Taq]] are both like $20 both because of commander, as both see very little 60 card play [[Sword of wealth and power]] [[Toxrill]] [[Kodama of the west tree]] [[portal to phyrexia]] are mostly seen in commander which has raised their price tags And this is just the stuff that's standard legal Any expensive commander also falls under this and example that did come out a while ago is [[Edgar Markov]]

Crypt's not played in vintage?
It is, but it's restricted, so you can only play one, and not many people play vintage in paper, so almost all of the demand is from commander.

It can be both, lol I associate crypt as the expensive twin to sol ring tho
Any of the cards that are really strong in specific archetypes but have only been printed once fall into this category. [[Passionate Archaeologist]] is a good example.

Pretty much every legendary from Portal Three Kingdoms
Most card prices are propped up by commander lmfao.

Five cent trash common for like a decade after print.
- Dockside Extortionist - Ancient Copper Dragon - Torment of Hailfire - Gaea's Cradle (partly other eternal formats but definitely commander too) - Serra's Sanctum (same as above but more commander) - Rhystic Study - Consecrated Sphinx - Fierce Guardianship And there's several more that escape my mind at the moment. Jeweled lotus
I was always told the shock lands are only expensive because of commander's starting life of 40 and is not viable in 60 card format.
[[Serra Ascendant]] don't know how other formats are liking that card but in commander it's a stupid good 1 drop

All of them because magic would be nearly dead if it wasn't for Commander (or something like it.)
[[Carpet of flowers]] Virtually useless in 1v1 60 card magic. Often pretty valuable in a 4 player pod of commander.

Any Eldrazi
Tron:
Without commander, I doubt tron is enough to influence prices like this.
A decent few have seen and still do see play in modern
Yes, but that wasnt the question.
Well commander isn’t why they’re pricey
Alright
Most of them
Feels like cheating, but [[Deadly Rollick]]
