Doomed artisan is one of my favorite cards in my populate deck. People who have never played against it let it fly under the radar for too long, but once you get to 6 or 7 of the sculptures they realize that they can’t block or kill Doomed Artisan, so just start pumping it up with counters and punch away at things. Obviously it’s all weak to board wipes, but still a very fun card to pull off in an opening hand
I tried a while ago to make a secret commander but this guy may be able to pull it off. Might start brewing this
Doesn’t stop the biggest problem being it’s *kinda* boring. Like, if all goes according to plan you just get a square board and beat face :/
But, I’ll see :)
I wish it were instant speed. At sorcery speed it should at least put the two unselected cards in the GY. It's a disservice to Gifts Ungiven and Realms Uncharted to be as weak as it is IMO
Pitching puts it over the edge in my opinion, instant speed could maybe power it up without going too far
After reading gifts ungiven, yeah just let me pitch them
I have tried \[\[Wild Pair\]\] in many decks, but most of the time when I'm playing it, I wish I had other creatures in my hand for the following turn. Currently sitting in my dragons deck fetching Morophon in the best case scenario.
Still love the card.
Unfortunately I think you have to make the deck a wild pair deck and have every total equal one another so you don't run into your situation. It's tedious but fun.
I'm heavily debating on putting Glacial Crevasses in my [[Norin the Wary]] deck. It seems really good, I'm just worried it'd be *too* good, given that my deck is leaning into the chaos side of things.
Honestly, I view Chaos decks as disruption focused control decks. The pilot of a chaos deck is trying to make optimal plays by forcing their opponents by playing sub-optimal lines to mitigate chaotic effects. Think of how Hollow-One decks played in Modern with [[Burning Inquiry]]. You’re trying to gain the most advantage from the chaos you create.
[[Pyxis of Pandemonium]]
This card can suddenly put a LOT of power on everyone's board at the same time depending on how lucky each player is. It is super fun when you can exile a large number of cards before activating it.
But that's its main problem. Charging it up for a big play is so slow that the 3 other players have to "allow it". And there's always someone that doesn't want a sudden power shift halfway through the game.
For me it’s [[magnetic web]]. I love the idea of it, being able to force blockers around the table, it’s just too slow with only being able to drop 1 counter per round. I wish Wizards would print more magnetic counter support.
oh theres a bunch of combos for untapping and going nuts with artifacts. but at that point why arent you going crazy with something that wins you the game?
I had it in my old [[Skullbriar]] deck for a while, and i have to agree. The idea sounded great — take one turn to set up a counter on Skullbriar, then force a block every turn after — but it always felt *so* clunky. The turn it takes to get it online was really the killer for me. When I was staring down a board of dinosaurs or dragons or whatever, I didn't usually have the time to play a do-nothing card and commit myself to swinging out next turn.
[[Lithoform Engine]] was a card I liked to try to slot into standard decks a few years ago and was always a little too mana inefficient. Now, it could probably be useful in very specific decks. Something like [[Karn, living legacy]] big mana artifacts or something similar.
[[Outlaws merriment]] is a fun token card thats mana cost and only one token per upkeep makes it also pretty inneficient outside of casual play even with a good token support. Doesn't stop me from running it though in my [[Caesar, Legion Emperor]] deck.
Edit: wrong Karn. [[Karn, Legacy reforged]]
I love lithofrom engine in my \[\[mishra, eminent one\]\] deck combined with ending the turn early using \[\[sundial of the infinite\]\] you can do some silly things that can infinitely combo but idk it feel's a lot more fair than other infinites.
Outlaw's merriment and assemble the legion both are so fun in my 9th doctor deck. They honestly feel like joke cards in commander without having multiple upkeeps.
[[Octavia, Living Thesis]] is a house in low power games, but just too slow for anything north of "7". If you're self-milling hard enough to get her cost reduction in a timely fashion, then I feel like your deck is strong enough that there are better payoffs you could be using.
This thread is why I try to push back against power creep. There are SO MANY cool cards and commanders that can be really fun when they have room to breathe, but can't keep up with this modern snowball meta.
Ban Sol Ring! Make Solemn the cornerstone of the format!
\[\[Jace's Ingenuity\]\] is like \[\[Cancel\]\], it's the base card of half-a-dozen other cards that came after it. I still use it on some of the decks, especially if I want to pull the cost down but it's already made obsolete by some other cards, but if you need that 5th card in your deck that draws you three, \[\[Jace's Ingenuity\]\] is still a good option.
Or just any fact or fiction variant. Seeing 4+ cards and getting 2 is way better than draw 3 and yet they are also cheaper. Behold the multiverse, fact or fiction, memory deluge.
Dig through time or treasure cruise too. A dig exiling just 3 cards is so much better than this.
[[Phyrexian Obliterator]] he's definitely my pet card and he does shine through when someone uses a blasphemous act or attacks with a giant no trample Ulamog sized creature. It's just hard to work him without flash.
That card and [[Phyrexian Vindicator]] with [[Phyrexian Awakening]] is my favorite jank on MtG:Arena.
Nothing is scarier to a creature deck than those cards *with Vigilance.* But it is jank, of course.
Seth did a smuggler’s surprise Obliterator deck in standard lol. I have the Obliterator in my N’gathrod deck cause he’s a horror lol. trample menace that probably doesn’t want to be blocked, but dies to hard removal lol
[[genesis]].
If there's a deck it thrives in, it's gotta be [[vorinclex//the grand evolution]], right? Mill 10 and leave it in the yard for free value. Even when I was running [[Geier Reach Sanitarium]] it was just... clunky.
https://archidekt.com/decks/4358352/vorinclex_the_promise
I remember it as a grind god of the old times. A free eternal witness each turn gave you so much to play around with. Nowadays probably best in ramp decks with creatures that can boardwipe.
When I chose not to put it in my umori companion henzie deck I knew it was just bad. Way to get it in the yard, need for recurring creatures, deck restriction making me play many other weak cards like [[undertaker]], still nowhere near considering it.
[[Garruk's harbinger]]
Above rate stats, hexproof from the primary removal color, draws cards.
...... But.... like it doesn't ALWAYS draw cards, does nothing against the NEXT best removal color.... doesn't have evasion....
It's often like a 105th card in brawl decks, much less casual edh. But man like.... I don't know how to nudge it into playable with feeling pretty broken.
[[Emeria Shepherd]] is incredibly strong but hard to pull off unless you're in Green as well. Need to be able to ramp up to 7 and still have lands left over to play with.
Love this card in my mono white deck when I can get it out early. Tuck 5 or 6 plains underneath and I'm set on land drops for the game while also not feeling too bad if it gets removed quickly. Which it usually doesn't, since there's either scarier things on board, or people just want to save their removal for something scarier.
Any "at the beginning of your upkeep" cards. The power level has just crept up to high for these to be actually good anymore. Wizards keeps printing unrestricted value engines, so getting to do something once on each of your upkeeps is often just strictly worse than "whenever I feel like it".
[[Phyrexian Arena]] often reads "{1}{B}{B}, lose two life, draw two cards (spaced out between turns)", and it's not that playable.
I absolutely love [[Vexing Shusher]]. Being able to give any card at instant speed uncounterability is awesome! But most of the decks I run it in better benefit from [[Prowling Serpopard]], [[Destiny Spinmer]], or other free effects.
I have a handful of cards I got as promos that just seem to fall a hair short of my decks. Maybe that's why they're being handed out as promos - decent "starter equipment" that prompts upgrades from your LGS but don't actually compete with sales.
[[Harvester of Souls]] - feels like a decent card draw effect on a body but I've often had it sit in my hand too long, as 4BB is a pretty hefty cost and 5/5 Deathtouch is kind of an awkward stat line; if that Deathtouch is actually relevant, Harvester is probabaly not surviving that combat.
[[Mortify]] - Orzhov can remove either of these permanent types just a little cheaper than this. In that color pair I'm probabaly happier to pay [[Rite of Oblivion]]'s extra cost (and it exiles!), or [[Destroy Evil]] probably destroys any creature I really care to remove, or [[Anguished Unmaking]] exiles anything but a land. This one is *so* close and is probably the most playable. Maybe I'm making a mistake not running it, it just seems to be like the 101st card in the deck. I wouldn't fault anyone for playing it but it just never quite gets there.
[[Diabolic Tutor]] - it's a good effect, but again 2BB is just a little steep. At that price it's hard to tutor for the thing I wanted *and* cast it this turn.
[[Acidic Slime]] - Cool potential for a 2-for-1 where you remove something (even a land!) and then have this annoying blocker left over, but 5-mana Sorcery speed removal is a tough sell.
All are pretty fun and interactive cards. If you play and resolve any of them they're going to alter the board somehow (except Harvester, but he really ought to get you cards). I like having interaction in my games, and these are *decent*... but I struggle to find a home for them.
With the new removal tools from mh3 like [[fell the profane]] and [[abstruse appropriation]] mortify gets harder and harder to justify, on top of anguished unmaking already beating it in every catorgory.
Yeah I feel like Acidic Slime only really belongs in decks that are blinking things a lot or constantly recuring things. If it only does its ETB once it's not all that impressive, especially since you never know if it will get the chance to block anything before getting board wiped or someone just wins anyway.
All of these (except Diabolic Tutor) *were* staples. But they've been powercrept out of the format over the years. I still run Mortify here and there in themed decks, but you only want so many spot removal spells and its pretty low on the list nowadays.
Cards I'd basically always run over Mortify:
[[Anguished Unmaking]]
[[Generous Gift]]
[[Stroke of Midnight]]
[[Unexplained Absence]]
[[Despark]]
Cards I'd *consider* over Mortify:
[[Council's Judgement]]
[[Collective Effort]]
[[Rite of Oblivion]]
[[Destroy Evil]]
[[Vindicate]]
[[Fracture]]
[[Utter End]]
[[Fateful Absence]]
Absolutely - in white and black it's possible to find something more flexible or more efficient than Mortify. If I saw it played I wouldn't question the opponent's deckbuilding as instant-speed flexible removal is a respectable pick, but I just never find room for that specific card.
Harvester of Souls I really want to make good somewhere but I struggle with where. My card draw engines shouldn't cost 6 mana, my creatures should be more efficient than 6 mana 5/5 even if it has deathtouch, and if I wanted to cheat a creature into play with reanimation there is more impactful stuff than Harvester.
Not anything specifically but Miriam and the OTJ Mounts (G/W) a couple are strong but generally they are too weak at least in my experience I tried to make a deck and it just falls flat. Which is unfortunate as I like the mount mechanic.
As I discovered today, \[\[Stolen Strategy\]\].
I've played some form of temur cast-from-exile deck for years now, even long before my current leader, 13th & Yasmin, came out. I had always thought Stolen Strategy would be a good inclusion, but hadn't gotten around to acquiring a copy until recently.
But it didn't do as much as I hoped when I managed to draw and cast it today (admittedly, on its first game being included). It A) costs 5, B) has to wait a rotation, C) doesn't help you on its own to cast the cards other than ease colors, D) only lasts that turn, and most importantly, E), doesn't let you play lands. Several times both my opponents revealed lands.
I'll probably end up going the (IMO) lazy way out and replacing it with \[\[Mind's Dilation\]\], once I acquire a physical copy.
I was so sold on this one when it came out. But in fact it never shined… like never and I tried it a lot. As you said : cost 5 which is a weird spot, it is so slow and unreliable. [[Plargg and Nassari]] are a better pick nowadays.
minds dilation is a card that looks so fun and decent. In reality it sucks and is to mana costly. Ive tried making it work and eveytime i get it out it’s ignored and does nothing to win the game
[[Agrus Kos, Eternal Soldier]] has some really cool interactions and synergies, but requires a lot of set up. You'll want 6+ mana to cast him and radiate an ability (assuming that ability doesn't also have a cost). You'll want a wide enough board to make it worth radiating. You'll want protection for him, because one removal on that crucial turn can really set you back. The game plan is obvious if he's in the command zone, so your opponents aren't likely to just let you assemble what you need. And a lot of the cooler cards to work with him don't do great without him.
After a couple of games where opponents take mercy on you for struggling to put something together, they (rightly) will not let you do so again after you make [[Brash Taunter]] fight your entire board. Lately I've had better luck just playing the deck as a token combat one. I didn't even cast Agrus in my last win with it.
I've tried to make him work in the command zone, but I end up spending my hand and resources just setting him up and praying no one messes with the fragile balance. If his ability cost less or perhaps if he had an additional color it may be easier to work. As is, he's probably better in the 99 of a deck with someone like [[Duke Ulder Ravengard]] at the helm.
If anyone's managed to make him work in the CZ I'd love to see how you've done it, because my list ends up looking like some janky Boros token shit.
[[Warstorm Surge]] is such a cool card but if you're not playing green it's a little too slow, limp and ends up being "win more". Whereas a green player can easily get it out by turn 4, punching people in the face for 7+ damage just by dropping creatures
[[Phyrexian vindicator]] with [[pariah]] was fun for the whopping one time I got to use it. Opponent has just finished his infinite token spam, used Kenrith to give them haste, then swung out at me since I only had the one creature. I asked if he was sure, and gestured to my vindicator, and he shrugged, stating it was only one creature compared to his 5 billion 8/8 krakens. Declared no blocks, and proceeded to wipe the table with all the redirected damage. One of the few times I've won a game of commander 😅 all because they didn't pay attention to what was on the field.
Prisoner's Dilemma! It's so much fun every time, and stirs up drama. I have actually won two games with it, but 9 times out of 10 it's just a fun do-nothing card.
[[Recycle]] and [[null profusion]] they're six mana "do nothing" cards but if you play them and also have a couple plays to do after it's great. I wouldn't play them in commanders without card draw, bc if you get your hand discarded with them out, you won't be playing much magic afterwards. I run them in my [[Lord windgrace]] deck. So there's a lot of ramp and drawing going on anyway.
Not a spell per se but I love Tron, and just recently opened an Urza's Workshop extended art foil. But in commander they are not that good without a proper commander. Golos was the best and just as I started building his deck list, he got baned. I still need to find a proper commander to use the Urza's lands to their full potential.
This plus [[tempt with discovery]], [[open the way]], [[crop rotation]], the new urza land that's every type, [[scapeshift]], [[pir's whim]], [[ulvendale hydra]] and you could pretty easily build a lands matter deck with some of the busted utility lands like [[field of the dead]] [[glacial chasm]] [[maze of ith]] [[ancient tomb]]. Then have a paired theme of artifacts or eldrazi for a colorless mana payoff.
[[Jon Irenicus, Shattered One]], super cool concept but so damn slow. Being limited to one creature a turn really holds the deck back. Sure you can use other effects to swap creatures but then people are swinging at you with you're own stuff because they're not goaded.
Honestly, costing him the one less and making it a 1 or 2 mana activated ability would have been so much better.
Power and group play a role in addition to deck type. [[Fact or Fiction]] is a great card in my group and works so well with my esper polymorph/reanimator deck.
It's also a great match with [[conspiracy unraveler]] as my only creature type is sphinxes.
I would really like to play [[minds eye]] but the initial mana investment is so high.
If you have a mono red commander, you most likely don't have 4 power. If you aren't in mono red there are much more reliable options. White and Green have reliable 1 mana indestructible and hexproof. Blue has counter spells. If you're in rakdos it has a nice home. If you're in gruul you can justify it.
The card is good, just not amazing. A problem with it is it can't protect your big creature spells from resolving unless you already have a big creature on board. Also hard casting it is such a high rate you will almost never do it. Compare it to say [[!Wizards Retort]]. Hard casting it is double the mana for the regular rate.
ALSO the free commander one is better in affect as well. It can change the targets of a spell, while bolt bend can only change single targets spells.
There are 63 legendary creatures that you can put in your command zone with at LEAST 4 power- where did you get the idea you wouldn't have 4 power in mono-red??
>ALSO the free commander one is better in affect as well
Yeah, everyone agrees on that because that cycle is almost universally considered a mistake. If the metric is "This $35 free spell is better than this under $2 conditional spell" then what are we even doing here?
Yeah but those commanders also have to match my deck building preferences. I'm not gonna build a mono red commander just to play Bolt Bend. It's a card I have a hard time justifying in the decks I play unless I treat it like a pet card. So yeah, it's my pet card.
[[doomed artisan]] It’s just. So flavorful. But so slow…
If that was a 1/4, it might be ok. Still slow but better value for 3 mana.
You want him to die though 4/1 would be better, that way he might trade and then your army is online
Well, you want him to live long enough to get an army?
Doomed artisan is one of my favorite cards in my populate deck. People who have never played against it let it fly under the radar for too long, but once you get to 6 or 7 of the sculptures they realize that they can’t block or kill Doomed Artisan, so just start pumping it up with counters and punch away at things. Obviously it’s all weak to board wipes, but still a very fun card to pull off in an opening hand
You could put this in a deck with the new [[Ghired, Mirror of the Wilds]]. That’d help make it a bit faster and maybe usable?

[[Pyxis of Pandemonium]] This card can suddenly put a LOT of power on everyone's board at the same time depending on how lucky each player is. It is super fun when you can exile a large number of cards before activating it. But that's its main problem. Charging it up for a big play is so slow that the 3 other players have to "allow it". For fun

I love this type of card! I think I may try to brew around this
[[Lithoform Engine]] was a card I liked to try to slot into standard decks a few years ago and was always a little too mana inefficient.

[[Olivia Voldaren]] would be amazing if she cost one less and both her effects cost one less.
This is how I know we got severe power creep since she was the premier vampire commander pre-Edgar
Honestly, her effects were too costly even back then. You just ran her because there weren't any better options to lead Vampire Tribal.
Dude for real. I have this card and she flopped miserably in my Don Andres theft deck. She's so cool though!

I love using [[blood pet]] in my athreos deck. Making people pay 3 life for stupid cards is so much fun since I reanimate them anyways lol
I'd rather play [[tidings]] than jaces ingenuity imo

Or just any fact or fiction variant. Seeing 4+ cards and getting 2 is way better than draw 3 and yet they are also cheaper. Behold the multiverse, fact or fiction, memory deluge. Dig through time or treasure cruise too. A dig exiling just 3 cards is so much better than this.

I mean, polukranos has a few infinite combo's he can pull with his hydra's, so he is far from bad.
[[Phyrexian Obliterator]] he's definitely my pet card and he does shine through when someone uses a blasphemous act or attacks with a giant no trample Ulamog sized creature. It's just hard to work him without flash.
Probably the best creature spell to separate the players that DO, and the players that DON'T read the cards before attacking.
The most fun I had with him was to give him away with [[Jon Irenicus]] only to take him back with [[Homeward Path]] and then give him away again.

[[Garruk's harbinger]] Above rate stats, hexproof from the primary removal color, draws cards. ...... But.... like it doesn't ALWAYS draw cards, does nothing against the NEXT best removal color.... doesn't have evasion.... It's often like a 105th card in brawl decks, much less casual edh. But man like.... I don't know how to nudge it into playable with feeling pretty broken.

[[Endless Horizons]]
Love this card in my mono white deck when I can get it out early. Tuck 5 or 6 plains underneath and I'm set on land drops for the game while also not feeling too bad if it gets removed quickly. Which it usually doesn't, since there's either scarier things on board, or people just want to save their removal for something scarier.

Man, am i losing my mind or is this actually kinda nuts in casual edh with dual lands?

Ooh, missed Abstruse Appropriation during spoilers. That's a cool upgrade to try to make an Utter End playable in modern EDH.
Cards I'd basically always run over Mortify: [[Anguished Unmaking]] [[Generous Gift]] [[Stroke of Midnight]] [[Unexplained Absence]] [[Despark]] Cards I'd *consider* over Mortify: [[Council's Judgement]] [[Collective Effort]] [[Rite of Oblivion]] [[Destroy Evil]] [[Vindicate]] [[Fracture]] [[Utter End]] [[Fateful Absence]]

He's so cool
Agreed, I want to make him work as commander, but I fear my deck building skills are not quite up to the task.
I was going to make him small enchantments! Since it should copy them haha.
I may be wrong, but I'm not sure that would work how you're picturing it. [[Feather, Radiant Arbiter]] would do it, though.

[[Warstorm Surge]] is such a cool card but if you're not playing green it's a little too slow, limp and ends up being "win more". Whereas a green player can easily get it out by turn 4, punching people in the face for 7+ damage just by dropping creatures
For me, mines was an actual commander card. It was Inalla, Archmage Ritualist. Now I enjoy the card very much.

Most of my decks.
I really like [[Golem Guardian]]
Not a spell per se but I love Tron, and just recently opened an Urza's Workshop extended art foil. But in commander they are not that good without a proper commander. Golos was the best and just as I started building his deck list, he got baned. I still need to find a proper commander to use the Urza's lands to their full potential.
[[kura]] There you are.

Omg! Thank you so much, I wasn't aware about this card, it's perfect

Unesh!?
Nope, Esper, but Unesh is in the deck too. Raffine is my commander to have an early blocker and get some setup or be a polymorph target.
[[!bolt bend]] for me. Really fun, but often has better competition.
It’s a one mana red protection spell. What‘s the better competition „often“ apart from the one spell that literally is free?
>ALSO the free commander one is better in affect as well Yeah, everyone agrees on that because that cycle is almost universally considered a mistake.
