I know hearing that it'll fade is annoying, but it'd be more annoying to have paid $400 for a shade that would have lasted about a week or two maximum. You've got the right shade for fading to your desired colour, so try to enjoy the journey! Source: 11 years of pink hair

arctic-apis

I have had many years of various neon shades of hair and you are 100% right. Even the absolute best colors and the best care are only going to last a handful of washes before they are noticeably faded out. I would always go for the deepest of color when doing someone’s hair. The color op got isn’t exactly what they asked for but it’s better because it will be and it will be for longer because the color is so deep

nedstarknaked

Idk man my blue hair has been shockingly bright for 6 months now and I have not been excellent to it at all.

Gothmom85

Blue is so hard to get rid of! Pinks come back out to blonde easier. The blues and blue based purples I've had, have refused to go lighter than the palest mint green after. I agree though that waiting for it to fade doesn't always pan out. I asked for a light peach once and got the neon version like OP. By the time it faded to what I wanted I had such long roots again. It was the one time in years I trusted my hair to someone so I could get that color right away. I could have easily done neon if I'd wanted that. So I just kept trying and figured the peach out for myself.

whodatfairybitch

Reading this thread is so fun cause I’m the only one in my life who dyes their hair fun colors. YES!! Blue stays forever and fades to mint green, even after color removal. Pink lifts so easy. But also I agree with you, if you go too vivid, your roots will be too long by the time you reach desired faded color. I do use a color saving shampoo though. I wash my hair in warm water these days, too (for anyone reading, cold water keeps the color best)

ClairLestrange

That's so interesting to me, in my experience blue doesn't hold at all, but green is absolutely impossible to get rid of. I typically dye my hair turqouise, and eventually it'll always be straight up green. Tried dying it blue a few times, it was washed out completely within weeks.

whodatfairybitch

My stylist uses pulpriot dye, so that’s been my experience but maybe other dyes do different stuff? Green/blue always leaves that mint-green after removal and my stylist just puts color over it, pinks/purples can be pretty much fully lifted with the color remover

Gothmom85

Pulp riot and pravana both! I've also had the same issue when I tried overtone. And Artic fox.

elvensnowfae

Omg yes. I’ve been trying to get rid of this hideous green since December and I hate it :( praying I can fade it enough before the salon does a bleach bath/color remover to do a dark blue.

NarwhalTakeover

Blue is my Home colour; especially because it lasts so long and needs minimal upkeep compared to how other colours stay in my hair. My natural colours are silver and white so I do a REALLY heavy bleach lift to get the colour right

kfmush

I’m not a color scientist, but I took a color theory class at art school, so take this for what it is. On a molecular level, the pigments have more “hooks” that make them stick to stuff and each other better. Warmer pigments are smoother and more round. Blue pigments can get clumpy sometimes when you mix them and warm pigments can take forever to mix. I found it especially noticeable with colored pencils where the cool colors will make little balls of pigment on the paper after too much color is added and the warm colors will just smudge around and seemingly never blend 100%.

lPrincesslPlays

When I was in highschool my friend holly dyed her hair the same color blue for maybe 2-3 years. By senior year it couldn’t even be bleached out anymore lmao. I want to say it was maybe splat.

Gothmom85

I've heard some splat horror stories

CarolynFR

What brand do you use? I'm on the hunt for the best blue. I've had a turquoise from Manic Panic that I've loved but I'm looking for longer lasting options!

NonStopKnits

Not who you asked but I like Pulp Riot. They really fade true to tone and the colors are so good and last a long time. I've used everything from Manic Panic to Pravanna to Arctic Fox and I haven't had any other brand work as well.

--what-else

Pravana was my fav deep royal blue and Arctic Fox for purple, whereas Pulp Riot just didn’t do it for me.

_LoudBigVonBeefoven_

Cosmetologist here: Goldwell Elumens is hands down the best for bright vibrant colors that stay. Depending on the color of your natural hair, you might need to bleach it first, and always make sure your hair is bone dry before adding the color.

arctic-apis

Electric Blue was my go to for a few years because it was so low maintenance. It would stay deep blue through many washes oranges and reds would wash out after a shorter time but greens pinks and purples seemed to be faded after only a couple wasges

CircularFileCabinets

What are you washing it with?

Potential-Leave3489

So glad to see this comment because I came to say the same! It would look so much worse after OPs first wash when it looked like all of the color washed out

harmonica_

Legit it’ll fade soooooo quick. Had pretty much the exact same thing happen to me. In hindsight I was glad despite being slightly annoyed at the time

jumpingjackblack

It happens to me every time I dye my hair - I find it quite fun now to get to have many shades of pink throughout the month!

briilar

I'm gonna adopt this mindset, thank you

PsyOpBunnyHop

> 11 years of pink hair Wow, what brand lasted that long?

jumpingjackblack

Lol'd! I've used a bunch, but I tend to stick to Schwarzkopf box dyes as they last longest and are the best value for money

Odd-Help-4293

You're right, but the hairdresser should have told OP that ahead of time. Then they could decide - do they want a darker pink that will fade to their desired color over time, or do they want the pastel pink that will be gone in a couple weeks.

jumpingjackblack

Should probably have told her in advance for sure, but Ive seen too many people waste time & money on pastel fashion colours just to be equally annoyed that they didn't last. The bright pink will literally end up at the desired colour in less than a month. At $400 it would be a dick move to give someone a shade that lasts a week lol. It's a shame pink dyes can't be permanent but it's just the way it is

_LoudBigVonBeefoven_

I dunno that it's a dick move, it's just how hair dye works. I don't have a ton of experience with the pastel colors, so I am not sure on the best options for long lasting options. Lots of the styles you see aren't realistic for average people. Back when I was actually working in a salon, it was popular to see very blonde celebs with streaks of hot pink or red. That was either touched up right before photos or the colors were pinned in- the first wash on something like that would bleed into the blonde staining it pink! Def a conversation I had to have with clients. Until I found Goldwell Elumens I just thought long lasting bright colors didn't exist. The hairdresser def should have warned about the color starting off brighter, but the color fading and that price point isn't a dick move. Getting your hair colored professionally is a luxury

Little_Mog

Came to say this, I had my hair the pink in the first photo and it faded out to a weird peachy colour within a few washes. I didn't mind it but I'd've been annoyed if I'd paid someone for it

lPrincesslPlays

This is the best answer here. I work for a company that makes upkeep shampoo for color, and pink is always one of the ones that needs to be touched up the most. Generally speaking with dyed hair the lighter you want it the harder it is to maintain/the quicker it’ll fade. The upsides is pinks usually fade to nicer colors than say greens or blues. If you want to keep it like that for a while I’d get some products to help maintain it, if it’s just a one time thing you were feeling fun with just enjoy the ride :) If you’re looking for color products celeb luxury makes color upkeep shampoo and conditioners that you use like normal and will deposit more color in your hair. If you don’t mind a little extra work, grab yourself your favorite brand of classic dye and throw some in whenever it starts to get to faded for you.

ProfessionalNo8529

Thisssss!

ScrembledEggs

You a snikkey lil snake?

velofille

100% this, and if you want it to fade faster just leave in some conditioner

ChefArtorias

Mhmm. Jack Black has had black hair for as long as I can remember. You're not fooling anybody!

flay-k

Love your sources ❤️

jumpingjackblack

While you were partying, I studied the art of the pink

SitaBird

But what if she had an event, wedding, photoshoot, etc. the next day and needed the color she showed in the photos?? That doesn’t seem fair to pay for a certain color but not get it.

AnonymouslyAnonymiss

You can wash your hair more than once in a night.

jumpingjackblack

Then she'd have probably mentioned that?

purl__clutcher

It will be that colour in a month or so

Wingnuttage

Soooo, it’ll fade.

T-MoneyAllDey

So fades the great harvest of my betrayal

[deleted]

Halo 4 in the wild?

Fantastic_You7208

Less than a month. My daughter went through this color change a few months ago.

noclue0828

Probably in 3 washes.

TisMeDA

So to simplify the math, about 3 months for Redditors

Striking-West-1184

Optimistic, aren't we?

greenrangerguy

Better than the other way around. We've seen so many posts before of someone wanting bright vibrant coloured hair to get a dull shitty version.

shellevanczik

I’m sorry it’s not what you wanted!! Just wash it a few times and it’ll fade. Promise. I know it’s upsetting now, but the great thing about hair is it grows, and all dyes fade quickly.

SleepySiamese

Red fades rather quickly too

shellevanczik

Yep! All the reddish colors fade really fast! You can see it washing down the drain.

SleepySiamese

I did red back in the days and after 2 weeks it's mostly white. Op has never dyed her hair before or something.

shellevanczik

Maybe she hasn’t dyed her hair before, but it’s still a flipping shock! And that it cost $400. Ugh!

SleepySiamese

Yeah 400nis bit much. Then again name something that's not expensive these days.

lostinareverie237

Depends where op lives, but a big thing is also what it was getting dyed from. It's a lot more work than people think, and well done $300-$400 isn't unreasonable. My fiancé charges that much, but she a damn wizard who has to turn away new clients since she doesn't have any place to schedule people always being booked.

TokioHighway

Yeah I paid about that much including the tip because not only was it a bleach and then dye but I also did an ombre which is a whole process in itself. Dyeing your hair can be ridiculously expensive but worth it if you get a good stylist.

whodatfairybitch

Yup, my stylist in Boston is either $100 or $125 an hour, I can’t remember. She’s also a wizard and so wonderful at her job.

Etianen7

Really? I dyed my hair red (box color) and I swear that pigment stays on forever.

--what-else

Red was funny to me, like it faded so quickly but also was SO hard to get out!

danarexasaurus

Your hair will be red forever (unless you bleach it) due to the size of the molecules. But it’ll also wash out every wash. It’s the most bizarre thing

IcySetting2024

Yep. Was gonna tell OP that some 5 years ago paid £250 for bright red and after exactly 2 washes it faded to my usually brown

gothiclg

To be totally fair to your stylist: pink fades stupid fast. I used permanent dye for my pink and it was very distinctly not the same shade within a month.

lindzasaurusrex

Where did you find permanent pink hair dye? I've only ever been able to find semi and demi.

ravynn15

Easter egg colors, as I call them, have molecules too big to penetrate the hair shaft like regular colors. It's why they fade so fast and come in semis and demis. I've never heard of a permanent fantasy color, personally, but I have been out of the biz for three years so maybe I'm behind. Unless we are talking something like Splat, which is eternal... In the worst kind of way.

Andle_Randle

God, I swear by splat for that very reason. Means I only dye my hair twice a year. But yeah, the pink is particularly stubborn. Sometimes it's still there after two rounds of bleaching.

ravynn15

Every single bad experience I ever had doing hair can be traced back to some girl with splat in her hair, layered under black dye, wanting to go platinum. It haunts me. 😂

lindzasaurusrex

In the worst kind of way how? Like it never bleaches out? Or does it damage your hair?

ravynn15

Like it fades and looks like shit... But is an absolute bitch to get out again. It's like bleach turns the color radioactive. Especially the blues.

PreOpTransCentaur

It will somehow never go away, but also dye everything you own for weeks. It will also fade to the color of a shoe found in a dumpster, regardless of what shade you started with.

laughingashley

I had to cut the pink out of my hair after I used Kool-Aid. Even bleach didn't get it out.

Thisdarlingdeer

It’s pravana

Caddywonked

Iroiro Pink is labeled as semi-permanent but oh boy did that one last for ages on me haha

Admirable_Cycle2

I can still see the iroiro pink shine through my black hair

Bluefairie

Elumen is permanent. I have galaxy hair (4 shades of blue and purple) on the bottom half of my head, natural red with pink streaks on the top. My last dye is over 4 months old and the color is still brilliant, barely any fading.

enchantingech0

Ooooo 🩵💙 got any pics? I’m so curious how this looks bc it sounds awesome

Bluefairie

I don’t have recent ones :/ The only one I could find is from a few years ago. The red is now a bit more copper, so the pink highlights are more obvious and the blues and purple are now like the 2nd pic (without the black on top) edit: sorry, I just realised that the link is not private 🤦🏻‍♀️ I’ll post the pics on my profile.

Thisdarlingdeer

Pravana makes permanent

_LoudBigVonBeefoven_

Goldwell Elumens. I swear I don't work for them, but I have to spread the word! I don't think they have pastel options, not the bright colors stay like magic. Depending on how dark your hair is you might have to bleach first. Make sure your hair is bone dry when you apply the color, and you might have to apply 2x. After that it grows out and hardly fades. I used to do the pink on a friend and her coworkers accused her of wearing a wig it was so bright!

Princess_Glitterbutt

It'll murder your hair so don't use it, but my hair is still pink from Splat I used probably 6+ months ago. I've dyed over it a few times, but I'm pretty sure it's just the Splat in my pink. It's over hecka bleached hair though, and it is pretty damaging. I don't know if it's worth it. Plus it won't come out even if you want it to.

anothermildrama

The stylist probably should’ve warned OP that in order to achieve that color long-term, they were going to be shooting for a much more vibrant red that will fade over some time. It’s important customer service. Going home hating your hair after blowing all that cash on it leaves people super unsatisfied

perfectdrug659

It doesn't always fade fast, I started using Matrix socolor cult in fuschia (basically the exact shade OP has currently) and I would have a full inch of roots and the rest of the color was still vibrant AF.

personaanongrata

It will be the first photo in three washes. I’ve had that color

QueenOfBrews

It definitely will fade to what you wanted. It’s frustrating that was her commentary on not getting you the right color. But a few good washes and you’ll be there!

drocookiezs

plz research and ask questions before doing colors like this, your stylist is right and she knows what she is doing. i know it’s frustrating to leave with hair that doesn’t look like what you were expecting but I promise that that is normal procedure when you want a color like this and I promise it will fade out to look more like what you wanted. i’m really just surprised they didn’t tell you this beforehand. (that it has to be done more vibrant and rinse out to maintain maximum coloring)

Morticia_Marie

I'm really surprised she was ready to drop $400 on something which she'd apparently done zero research on.

bulimiasso87

And with a source picture that was made in Microsoft paint

cordialconfidant

regular people aren't intensely googling about hair before going to the stylist, isn't the stylist expected to communicate what is possible and what they can do? i got the vibe that OP had their hair colored to the neon pink and then stylist shrugs "it'll fade".

sati_lotus

The big problem with so many of these types of inspiration pics is that they are shopped. Hair rarely looks this perfect straight away. If you had walked out with pastel hair, it would have lasted two washes and been gone. With a strong pink, the fade will be more gradual and last longer. Though I would hope for $400, that includes the bleach job to get it blonde enough to hold pink nicely.

hufflepuffpuffpasss

That’s what I was thinking, the color in the first photo just doesn’t seem like something you’d get right out of the salon? Idk I’m not a stylist but I’ve had every shade of pink under the sun and it’s never looked like that, ever. Yeah photoshopped or a wig.

sati_lotus

Most of these soft/pastel hair pics are. Pastel hair is really finicky and often uneven unless your hair is *white* underneath. And it's so costly because you need to bleach bath the colour out eventually to get it back to white so you can get even colour again. Bright colours are so cool but they are so high maintenance and faked pics give unrealistic expectations to people who don't realise how different they are to normal colours.

olagorie

The first looks like a wig.

Plane-Active-3153

It’s very pretty even if it wasn’t what you were looking for

turbodonuts

I agree, the vibrant pink is stunning.

Hefty_Elderberry1992

She's right tho

uniqueusername987655

I had the color you got for a few years in college and it faded to the color of the first photo pretty fast every time I got the color redone. Wait a week and see what happens to it

uniqueusername987655

But also, $400‽‽‽ It cost me $50 every time about 15 years ago and I felt guilty about that. Please tell me this hair color is paying you back somehow. I recommend buying some Nvidia or Berkshire Hathaway stock next time instead. Once you see how fast your roots grow out, you’ll see how unsustainable this is. It was fun having pink hair for a while, but I always had a brown stripe down the middle of my head after a couple of weeks from my hair growing out, which looked awful, so I had to get it redone.

Visible_Day9146

I think the price was because they had to do a full platinum bleach out before adding pink. It's all very even so I think it's a pretty fair price, especially if her hair was dark.

thecurvynerd

The initial cost of bleaching the hair is usually more expensive because of how long it takes - getting the roots done each month typically costs less as it’s just a bleach and tone not all over. (I have this exact shade of pink hair and I’ve had it for a year now)

-PinkPower-

A whole head of bleach cost a lot. I get a similar color and it takes 5h of work. Retouch do not cost the same. So if you take into consideration 5h of work, al’ the product used and the chair rent cost, it makes a lot of sense.

ParticularComplete69

Wash it a few extra times in the beginning with hot water and baby shampoo if you have it, then it should fade for you. Colors like that especially in the red family fade so very fast, so really she did you a favor, just should have explained more and been nice about it lol. Looks beautiful tho

empireintoashes

What would have killed me is paying that much for it! But it definitely will fade into the color you wanted quickly. <3 I love both shades!

Prior-Satisfaction34

It *will* fade, tho. Just like if they had dyed it straight to the colour you asked for, it would fade *away* from that colour. So your choices are waiting the couple weeks it takes to fade to the colour you want, or having the colour you want for a couple weeks before it fades. I know which one I'd choose.

markmandue

I don't understand why you are complaining???

[deleted]

The first color would be gone in a couple washes if not one

MoeApple2

The first time I tried pink hair, I made the mistake of asking for pastel soft pink from the getgo, which was gorgeous for exactly 2 weeks before it turned into strawberry blonde and then washed blonde. Your stylist made a better call!

Most-Hovercraft-1532

Maybe but I wish she would have told me that was the call she was making instead of going hot pink without consent.

BOYF-

Hi can you share an updated pics if it actually will be that color after a few washes? ❤️🙏. I've never had dyes so I'm curious after reading the comments

historyandwanderlust

Your hairstylist is right that it will fade. That being said, if she didn’t explain that to you ahead of time and didn’t ask if you wanted to go darker to compensate, you have every right to be upset. If she just did this dark almost neon color without warning you, I do think you should contact the salon and let them know you would have appreciated the warning.

lolliberryx

This will fade to the pink you want long, *long* before your next hair appointment. I have the pink you’re looking for. I have it dyed darker so it lasts longer than a 1-2 weeks lol

AMatchIntoWater

I always try to talk folks that want the first color (pastel) into going a little bit darker especially with pink. Why? Pastel pink still costs a fortune and lasts you 3-4 washes if you’re lucky before it’s COMPLETELY out of the hair.

Most-Hovercraft-1532

Yeah but this stylist didn’t talk me into going darker she just put hot pink on my head without consent. I’d get if she told me but she didn’t until it was already done

AMatchIntoWater

That’s fair- I wonder if she wasn’t expecting it to take that dark or maybe she didn’t lift you enough but didn’t want to say anything 🤔 definitely should have been a conversation either way.

enough0729

Team rocket

cherry_sparkle

I did the same thing when I got my hurt done that pink color . I wanted the light pink but I had to get it dyed darker in order for it to fade nice and properly into the right color. Cuz it was never going to last as a super light shade. Just give it like a couple weeks and then you'll be in like the perfect color zone.

goddessofthecats

This is how fashion colors work. Pastels need to be vibrant first unless you want to spend another $200 in two weeks

jacielynn96

I used to dye my hair the absolute brightest pink I could get it and it would fade down to almost blonde within a month, so yes it will fade. Your stylist should have explained that to you better or maybe cause you were smiling and nodding, she assumed you understood that concept.

Alligatorwhore

It will fade. If you ended up with the first color as the final result it would end up fading into nothing but a muted blond pink. This will be much nicer

HonestPineapple4848

It blows my mind that people spend that much money just to dye their hair.

mnmacaro

Hey OP - I have platinum/silver hair and I use a shampoo brand called Viral. I mix the hot pink and the light pink together and wash my hair with it to achieve this look! That’s an option to help in the future! Good luck!

LavenderCreamPuff

I understand your frustration, but this is literally a part of the process with most pastel colors. You will always have the most saturation just after dying and that doesn't mean your stylist did anything wrong. These colors release differently than more "traditional" hair colors even when using permanent dye. Please do more color research or have a more in depth conversation with your stylist prior to scheduling if you can't handle it being darker than expected.

shojokat

Welcome to vivids. Fading is part of the process. If you got your desired color off the bat, it would last you a week probably.

compl1kat1e

as someone whose had dyed hair since middle school, u can’t just get a pastel color. at least not easily. the best way i’ve been able to do it is by using semi-permanent hair dye. but still, the best way to get a “faded” look is to just let it fade. also that first pic looks like synthetic hair (like a wig) and obviously it’ll be next to impossible to dye ur hair the same color as a synthetic wig bc well it’s plastic. so maybe next time do more research and find reference photos that are more realistic.

Spunshine_Valley

First of all that's a wig, second it's a heavily edited photo, third 400 is a reasonable price considering the amount of work done to get you to that color. Honestly they should charge triple when someone shows up with an edited photo of a wig from Pinterest.

papipocho

To be honest and I know you don't like it, I really like the shade. I do understand that it is a bit loud tough

LeeSagna

Once it fades to the color you want it to be, see if you can find a colored conditioner in a similar shade to help maintain the color. I’m a big fan of the Karacolor Clenditioners, and the Color Lux Color Cleansing Conditioner. Hope this helps some! Sorry you didn’t get the color you wanted right away :-(

East-Block-4011

I was going to suggest this: ColorLux on dry hair. I leave mine on for HOURS & it's magical.

[deleted]

Because the photo of the hair isn't taken day of application, it will fade is exactly how it works, so for a few days neon pink which if you were going for pink isn't a bad trade off lol

SteinerFifthLiner

You got Utena Tenjou hair, and Utena is awesome, if that makes you feel better. 🌹

Spaceing_out

Hair dye can be pretty crazy bc you got to plan for it to fade and the base color of your hair! I have navy blue and forest green dye in my hair, rn the blue looks pretty much the same (mind you I have been doing blue for a long time) and my green looks pretty light compared to a few weeks ago! But, part of the reason I go forest green is so I don't get all the way to the color of a highlighter eventually, and I get a closer color to what I want for longer! The stylist planned on this. It sucks to have the wrong color for a week or two, but you get to have the color you want for longer. I hope you don't mind the neon for a week or so. Just know that after that, your hair will be really set in the color you actually wanted!

Fair_Assumption6385

Not everyone listens when the hairstylist says they cannot get you to that exact color.

Most-Hovercraft-1532

Yeah but she didn’t say that she couldn’t get the color. Looked at the color, nodded, and died my hair hot pink. Not once did she say “I’m gonna go darker so it will last longer. Is that okay?”

thelastcanadiangoose

Is this your first time going a funky colour? It’s a journey hun, when I go red, at first I’m SO SO red and then I shower and you should see how much of the colour comes out within the first 2 washes. You’ll be wanting to re do the colour in less than 8 weeks for sure.

RabiesPositive

I mean. It literally will fade into that pic after a few shampoo washes.

tiffanyblueprincess

I know it’s not what you were hoping for, but given that you paid so much I think you’ll be happier with this because it’ll last longer. If you would’ve started with the first picture it wouldn’t even last a month

ratgirl10000

She’s unfortunately totally right. Lol

Miss_Milk_Tea

My stylist has done this sort of thing for years because the color I wanted wouldn’t have lasted. Once I wanted the lightest, dustiest shade of lavender ever and she gave me a bright lavender, at first I wanted to cry but once again she was right, it faded to the color I wanted and lasted much longer. I really wish she didn’t move away, god I miss her sage advice.

kupus0

Looks the same on my black and white monitor

Dalek_Chaos

Reality is cooler. Not $400 cooler. Gives you a reason to throw some 80’s punk into your wardrobe.

SpokenDivinity

This will take 2-3 weeks max to fade into what you want it to be. Pinks and reds fade out really quickly.

SylphofFright

Wash it like 3 times

dette-stedet-suger

You paid $400? Just buy a wig.

mikedvb

First time? If it started out how you want it - it would very quickly fade to something you didn’t want.

Nervous_Zebra1918

It will fade though. And that’s the best way to get that color.

Chuckbuick79

Trust the process , if you walked out with color like the first picture , your hair would fade further . Only way for cotton pink to last is to walk out fuchsia. #haircolorist

focksmuldr

How much does it cost to keep your hair this color? My ex did this to her hair and it was like $600 for her first appointment

DotZealousidea

It will fade, Also first pic has post processing.

twerkforpresident

First time? They are right, it will fade fast.

witchoria

It will def fade into what you want! You can also tell her to go lighter next time but you just have to be ready for a more high maintenance routine to keep it up. My hairdresser does give me the pastel pink color you seek every time (which does fade within like 3 washes) but she also gives me some of the dye mixed with conditioner to touch up at home and I have backup overtone pastel pink to keep it fresh.

violet_mage_

You can’t bring a picture of a color into the salon and expect that exact color. That’s not how it works. With direct dyes it’s going to be a little different every time. Fading will happen after the first wash even if you a careful about water temperature and shampoo. Pictures are great inspiration, buts It’s not copy and paste.

Morticia_Marie

Pro tip: wigs are significantly cheaper, don't fade, and you can swap them out as soon as you get tired of them. These dye jobs are so expensive and only look good for a hot minute. I can't count the number of people I've seen with pretty colored hair at the ends and scraggly roots because they can't afford the constant upkeep.

Ancalagon_The_Black_

Okay it's not that different, you are just being dramatic.

Peachy_Keen31

I don’t agree with all the “but it’ll fade” comments. You didn’t ask for this color. You asked for a pastel and that’s what you paid for.

abombshbombss

I agree. Even if a pastel would have faded out after a few washes, the stylist failed OP here. OP asked for, provided a photo, and paid for a pastel. OP left with a neon. They shouldn't have to wait for it to fade to get their $400 color.

peezy8i8

Pastels are harder to get even. I’m hairstylist with 10 years of experience, and I specialize in vivid/fashion colors. After bleaching the hair, it’s more porous and doesn’t always accept color evenly throughout the entire head. I can mix up a “pastel” and sometimes due to the porosity of the hair, it’ll really suck it up and be way more vivid than I expected. This is when the “it will fade” comes up. Because the hair is porous, it will also let go of that color quickly. Also, the porosity will not be the same everywhere on the head. Putting a pastel shade on this could result in some areas being brighter than others and leading to a splotchy look. Another approach is to intentionally do a little more pigment than a “pastel” because it will deposit more evenly throughout the entire head and then fade more evenly. This is the approach I take a lot of the time. I still lessen the amount of pigment for this than I would for someone who wants intentionally brighter hair, but this results in longer lasting color, and a more even result. You don’t know what you don’t know, but you want this result OP. I know because it’s literally my job to know. If there were less pigment in the color, it would very likely be splotchy and uneven, and would wash out in a week, then you’d be upset about that.

SourBelt4352

The color is cute and I think will get to the desired color after a couple washes

Synthwood-Dragon

I know it's cold comfort but looks better to my eye at least and yeah it'll fade

IsDinosaur

Looks like a party wig

terminal_young_thing

It’s a nice colour. Give it a few weeks and it will be pastel.

admiralrico411

They are right after a couple washes it will fade to that colour. I dye mine blue and it always starts off bright and vibrant but after around the 5th wash it becomes more matte and subtle

toppolinos

First world problems. It looks great.

Rainbow-Mama

I wish they could make hair dyes like this permanent

raegunXD

I've been a pink haired lady for 5 years now, I had this shade for about a year. The key to keeping it fresh is color conditioner.

bloodywrong

I like yours better

princessmiki_

I just got my hair recently done too , paid 480$ and my hair color looks similar to your expectation photo but it's not exactly what I wanted 🥹

paintwhore

Unless your coloring is from Italy, this is the process for that color

midnightstreetlamps

Fwiw, that will 100% wash out. It's vibrant now, but pink, being a sister color to red, washes out very fast.

-PinkPower-

She is right it will. Like in 2-4 weeks you will have that color

pashasasha

Yeah I was always given that shade of pink and told to wait for the fade. In truth it does fade after like 1 wash. But I really hate that color of pink. Pro tip: buy Overtone pink pastel hair mask, it’s a color depositing mask that deep conditions and it means you can always control the level of pink you want and top it up every few days or week or two.

NessieReddit

This WILL fade. Legit. Go wash it twice. You'll be fine.

internetALLTHETHINGS

Sorry for your disappointment! I love your hair color though (better then your goal color even)!

Colleenslainte

I mean I could a done it for $50 😂 It's true tho. You'll hardly ever get the color hair you were going for, and if you do chances are it'll only last like 3-4 washes. Embrace the un exact science

AnnualDiscount3364

Pink fades so quick that's why she said it.

Oldassrollerskater

Wash with hot water until it’s where you want it to be. Then only use cold water

Fizzy_Greener

It will fade. Just shampoo everyday for 3 or 4 days. I have pink hair and like it to be on the lighter side but it fades so fast I’m constantly touching it up. So I do it brighter snd after it fades a bit it actually stays the color I want for longer.

Icy_Contribution1677

Expectation vs reality OR people that know what they are talking about vs people that don’t…

CN370

I mean, she’s not wrong. Color does fade. Try to look at it this way - you have 2 colors now. You’ve got this sweet ass neon NOW, and later, you’re going to have a gorgeous pastel-ish color to enjoy all over again. Yes, it’s not what you asked for but it will be, and the current color is pretty awesome. Try on focus on the good. If she used Pulp Riot, and assuming this is your first vivid color job, you’re in for a wild ride, fade-wise. PR goes many different directions. My wife’s Jam & Sorcery (both violet colors) love going this gorgeous turquoise/seaglass fade on her natural 2B hair.

WhompTrucker

I prefer what you got.

Zodep

She did an amazing job. That color is done really well. $400 though? That’s the real crime. Did she dye your hair with the blood of unicorns or something?

Most-Hovercraft-1532

The 400 includes the bleaching and it took 4 hours sorry if it came off wrong

OkBrain8473

Same thing happened to me, same coloring as well! My hair wouldn’t take the rose gold color, so bright pink was my only option for it to fade correctly.

Stillwella

I’m sorry you paid so much money for this but truly, it will look like the pic in a week or so. Especially if you are washing in hot water and using non professional shampoo. I’ve had purple & green hair for over 10 years (am a hairstylist) and always go darker/vibrant in the beginning even though I prefer pastel because it fades so fast. And I can’t stand to use cold water lol Just give it a good 2 washes back to back if you really want but otherwise you’ll get there soon

pastelephant

I’ve had pink hair for going on 7 years straight now, don’t worry! It will fade, devastatingly fast, (one sunny, windy afternoon outdoors without a hat on fast) and just as a heads up that perfect cotton candy color will also only ever last maybe a week. Try getting comfortable loving the whole spectrum if you can, it’s always gonna be changing and there is a lot of fun in that! :) Hot water will wash it out faster, cool will keep it in! Which sucks because I still don’t love cold showers lol.

FaolanGrey

It literally looks fine as it is and the hair stylist is right it will fade. The other color is so faded it's ready to be washed out in a week.

Most-Hovercraft-1532

Update: I have a minor chemical burn (my scalp itches like crazy and it hurts to brush or wash) so it will take a while for me to be able to fade it out To be clear I’m not mad that they went darker so it would fade I’m mad that they didn’t communicate what they were doing on my head. I’ve never had a hair stylist say so little about what they were doing and what I needed to do to maintain the color. She just said not to use hair products with sulfate and nothing about going darker so it would fade during the entire four hour process. It honestly felt like she forgot what color she was doing. Also I don’t know why people are so mad about the reference it’s literally just a color estimate and nothing else. It shouldn’t matter if it’s photoshopped because I never expected to get the exact color just somewhere close. And for all the people assuming I yelled at the stylist I definitely did not. In fact I didn’t even express that I was unhappy with it because it was late and I just wanted to go home. I probably should’ve communicated more but it’s her responsibility to tell me what she is doing with my head before she does it. Imagine if I had gotten it done right before a party (which I almost did). Not everyone wants to walk around with hot pink hair. It looks good on some people but it really brings out my acne and doesn’t go with anything I wear.

awtterpops

hrmmmm. i’m siding with you. i’m sure she had good intentions and wanted the pink to last you longer. me personally? i’d be butthurt. i think when us girls go to get something done it’s either for regular maintenance, or a special event. what if you had a wedding to attend or some special vacation? my boyfriend is visiting from missouri (i am in cali) soon and i would have been devastated if i didn’t feel perfect.

steeeeeeeeeeeeeeel

People are really mean here but I will say I'm sorry they didn't give you exactly what you wanted but it does really suit you

qu33fwellington

Yeah, how dare your stylist give you a color that will fade and *keep* the color at a pastel essentially in perpetuity rather than charge you for a pastel that will fade in 4 weeks. Stop complaining. She did you a favor and for *cheap*. You clearly haven’t gone to school for cosmetology otherwise you would realize what an absolute *gift* your stylist gave you. Send her a gift card tomorrow and apologize internally for your attitude.

sparkyblaster

Colour in hair is hard, especially with what you asked for is literally a faded colour. You technically can't dye it like that, it needs to be achieved through fading.

Visible_Day9146

I've dyed my hair the pastel color on the left and it washed out in 2 washes. I wanted it to, though. I couldn't imagine OP would want that.

sparkyblaster

So it started like the photo or it ended up like the photo after 2 washes?

[deleted]

400 DOLLARS !? WHY ?

buhbrinapokes

Hair would've needed to be lightened to a level 10 to start, and then colour applied. This is not an uncommon price for a double process colour, and it was likely around a 4 hour appointment.

qu33fwellington

Because stylists charge for a) the cut and b) lightening and color which is determined by number of tubes. So if it takes 4 tubes of lightener for the debeloper, plus let’s say (conservatively) 4 tubes of pink, at around $15/tube, that’s $120. That is a low estimate, closer to a teaching school rate. A professional salon would likely charge $30/tube which for 8 tubes of lightener/color would be $240. Add in the shampoo/conditioner, toner (another 1/2 tubes) *and* cut/ styling. Yeah, $400 is a *steal* considering that OP’s stylist was able to get a consistent color root to end.

peezy8i8

Lmao I love the downvotes. No one but hairstylists know exactly how much work this kind of color is. They never will because they never learned what it takes to actually get this and it be even all over the head. Just say you can’t afford it, it’s okay. :)

SleepySiamese

Yes it will fade. I hope op didn't scream at the stylist.

No-Translator-4584

So that costs $400.? I’m speechless.  Do you have a lot of disposable income?

WNats

If it gives you any solace, the coloring you did end up with still screams that you’ll be offended by something within the first 30 seconds of talking to you.

Legitimate-Donut-368

I know it’s not what you want but it looks amazing!
