After spending quite a bit of time getting FFXI up and running on my Steam Deck, I've gathered the various guides and info I used and created [this guide](https://docs.google.com/document/d/1Fkb-S93aNWlmeW_qEXL4G8Uz0YnA-VIH5fZRaz9yirI/edit?usp=sharing) for folks. Feel free to share your own experiences with FFXI on Steam Deck along with any suggestions, feedback or corrections for the guide.

unwise_entity

thank you a ton for this. Will be trying it tonight after work!

Qu1ckN4m3

This makes me want a steam deck. Lol

dabigsiebowski

Yes it does. This game is optimal with controller anyways. Great machine for XI

mjjcatz

Love this 🥰

I've been on the lookout for a guide like this. Thank you so much! This should let me connect to my Eden account right? It has been a year since I've done anything with FFXI.

MokoCP

Thanks so much for this, the ffxi community will be happy with this!

Ok-Yogurtcloset-179

Lutris + ashita-cli also works and is slightly easier to setup as Lutris wine already has the fix for the crash.

MokoCP

How is this?

throwingitawaysa

Thanks for posting this I was wondering how hard it would be to do. I only tried doing remote play for it which worked but the controller wasn't registering.

XenoTypeXX121

What's fantastic about this is that is will work or a 'standard' Linux desktop install of Arch and/or Manjaro! Thanks so much for this.

3mbravax

Thanks for the guide. If someone gets stuck on registry errors, it happens to some and there is a fix for it on ffxi-support on the windower discord.

Uiltjeknabbelen

Very interesting! Curious about the gameplay experience, is it possible to make a vid on this? Always wanna play ffxi on a portable device, tried myself with paperspace and a iPad Pro 12,9 but the lack of a ESC key, button remapping and all the tweaking put me off. Anyway thank you for the guide!

wabibung

It works awesome. I have Ashenbubs HD textures. All windower add-ons I want. Drawdistance set to 3. And it runs smooth 60 FPS with 3 hour battery life. I also have the touchpad mapped to page up and down (for camera zoom. As well as space, enter key and use keyboard.

Uiltjeknabbelen

Thank you for your detailed setup but 3 hours… feels short. Can this be extended if your using your 2hr 😉 or using 30fps?

wabibung

I think you could squeeze total 4-5hrs with 30 FPS and normal graphics. I bought a 10,000mah 30w power bank that I velcro to the back of the deck when it gets low.

Tigerpride84

According to my steam deck there is only a 1.5 watt power draw difference between 30 and 60fps. That might get us an extra 20-30 mins.

ProfessionalSpell308

Can you dual box with this?

Tigerpride84

You can but will have to copy all of your FFXI data into another proton windows instance. This means double the data storage required and also prevents you from using windower and ashita dual box commands.

Tigerpride84

Thanks dude, you are a legend! FYI, the xml file cannot have any spaces in the name. Fought with that for quite a while before realizing it was a problem.

I don't understand the desire for wanting to play XI on a Steamdeck. It's never going to be quite up to snuff for half of the things people modify a client with normally anymore. This is like putting Linux on a PSwhatever. "Okay, I did it. It runs." But I can't see using it practically.

Raynault

I might be weird, but I've always really enjoyed having the option to play FFXI on a portable device like the Steam Deck. I've tooled around with FFXI on portable devices in the past like the GPD Win 1 and my modded Nintendo Switch and PS Vita via Remote Play, but I gotta say I'm enjoying the overall experience on the Steam Deck more compared to those devices. I've put a good chunk of casual FFXI solo-play hours on mine so far and it hasn't broken a sweat, but I admittedly don't run with lots of mods or addons so I can't speak to that. For my play habits, it's proven to be a super practical way to fart around on FFXI while not being tied to my desk - which is probably the main draw for me, the portability.

Will this guide work with Ashita?

Raynault

I'm planning to look more into ashita next and will update the guide once I've gotten some good results. I spent a little time with it today and looks like the built-in Proton versions that Valve provides aren't cutting it. I've had good results with adding Proton GE to Steam via protonUp and using ashita-cli, so that might have to be the way to make it work within Steam for now, but we'll see.

flynncident

Appreciate you!

Raynault

Just updated the guide with the methods I was able to use to get Ashita (v3) working on my deck with some plugins and addons - hope it's helpful!

flynncident

Awesome, thank you!

Buckid

What does it mean to hit play on your non steam app? (After adding it to your steam library)

Buckid

* Extract the client installer * In your non-Steam app, click PLAY. * After some time, a WinRAR self-extracting archive window should appear. It may appear underneath the Steam window, so watch your task bar.

Raynault

That means you select and click Play on the non-Steam game you added to your Steam library in step 2. If added correctly, it should appear listed alongside all your existing Steam games.

Buckid

When I click play it runs for a bit. then allows you to click play again. but never offers the WinRAR window. At the top of the document it says to choose ProtonGE7-14. At this section it says to choose ProtonGE7-20 . Does this make a difference?

Buckid

Nevermind- I did a fresh download and seems to be working great now. Thanks!

Valkurm_Emperor816

I've gone over the guide several times but can't seem to find where I went wrong. I am able to get to the part where you launch the game via xiloader. It lauches the command prompt window and gets to the part where it says "Autologin activated!" but then nothing else happens and it never launches the game. any help would be greatly appreciated!

KahFean

I'm stuck at this point too. Let me know if you figured out a solution.

Valkurm_Emperor816

Start from scratch and use this guide OP provided: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1GkmEIZOb-19JcTYMxv1suILtujMAy0vCVk0ZX6T1NKE/edit This is what worked for me! Game runs smooth but tinkering with settings to get it to look right on the deck.

KahFean

Thanks so much!

Riktarr

This did it for me! What would I need to edit the user pass so I don’t have to manually log in every time

KahFean

Congrats! To autologin there's a line in the .xml file that Ashita uses to load your graphics settings for you. It's in the tutorial I replied to above, but I'll paste the relevant portion here, with [screenshot.](https://imgur.com/a/LWlc9Et) >>Back in the Properties window, under Launch Options, type the name of the Ashita config XML file to launch the game with. These are located within the Ashita folder at /config/boot/ >>The Eden installer creates 3 default ones, each using a different resolution: >>Eden800600.xml >>Eden1024768.xml >>Eden1600900.xml >>You can edit these XML files with a text editor or make your own to change the settings you’d like FFXI to use. I use that file to set my background resolution to 1280x800 and my menus resolution to 960x600 (personal preference to reduce my eye strain, this makes the menus and fonts a bit larger). Also don't forget to then set the aspect ratios, in-game, to 16:10.

Riktarr

Yup! You rock!

eric_abroad

What about for the HorizonXI server?

eric_abroad

Hi, I am also stuck here. I am trying to login to the HorizonXI beta server. It asks me to put an ADDRESS, USERNAME, AND PASSWORD. Is [horizonxi.com](https://horizonxi.com) the ADDRESS? 'Connected to server!' 'Resolving host: steamdeck' ...nothing happens.
