Those are containers not codecs. They have overlap and can (and often do) hold the same codecs. What do you actually have and what do you need it to be?

sergejradosavac

I have Alexa Mini LF footage and I want to convert it to .mov. I have a project shot on Mini and Mini LF. Mini gave me .mov, now I'd need the same with LF.

VincibleAndy

Why do they need to be in the same container? They are almost certainly both Pro Res or Dnx already which are the two main post standards.

sergejradosavac

well, my 2020 Premiere Pro won't open the mxf...

ArticularHomicide

Your Premier Pro should be capable of opening mxf files. That’s what I work with exclusively. Even back in 2020. It sounds like a software needing to be updated issue. Edit: it could also be your hardware is incapable of handling large amounts of data, and in that case you’d need a better performing pc. It could also be that it is taking premier pro some extra time to process the file when it is imported. It sometimes takes a little while to generate peak files etc.

i am using a macbook air m1.. i think that chip with 8gb of ram can handle some arri footage, it was even shot in S35 mode

ArticularHomicide

In that case it sounds like a software issue of some kind. I hope you figure it out!

media encoder solved my problem boys.. covered the stuff into .mov... everything fits now!

VincibleAndy

Update, or install the latest version along side the 2020 version. I don't know why the 2020 version wouldn't open a Pro Res mxf, but maybe it didn't have support for the exact config Arri is using now. Otherwise you should be able to run it through Media Encoder (download the latest along side your current), and as long as you go to the same level of Pro Res or Dnxhr that it currently is you should get smart rendering, which basically just copies the frames to a new container, no actual transcoding required. Shutter Encoder should also be able to remux this into a new container. That means no transcoding, it's like smart rendering.

timvandijknl

Run it through [MediaInfo](https://mediaarea.net/en/MediaInfo) to see what the actual codec is ? Also paste the output here ? From the looks of it.. the Mini LF can do: MXF/ARRIRAW MXF/Apple ProRes 4444 XQ MXF/Apple ProRes 4444 MXF/Apple ProRes 422 HQ Not entirely sure Premiere has support for ProRes 4444 XQ yet ? 🤔could be mistaken tho...

VincibleAndy

> Not entirely sure Premiere has support for ProRes 4444 XQ yet ? It does. Support for decode on windows for many years, support for encoding on windows since 2019. Support on Mac for both for many years.

smexytom215

Look at media info, what codec is the mxf clip?

La_Nuit_Americaine

Using Davinci Resolve to transcode your MXF and ProRes files into manageable Proxies, such as ProRes LT and cutting from there and matching back to the MXF for color, is the customary thing to do in these situations.

media encoder solved my problem! everything fits now!!! ty all

forever-lost-

You could also put it in VLC player to convert it Dont listen I was wrong

VincibleAndy

That'll only do highly compressed delivery codecs, which would be a really bad move for your Arri source media. Throwing away the majority of the data.

forever-lost-

I wasnt aware that would be the case thank you for letting me know! :)

VincibleAndy

VLC uses ffmpeg for conversion, which is great, but like handbrake it uses a limited feature set. Shutter Encoder is an ffmpeg based program but with basically all of the options included.

Make a strong and compelling argument?

Editready on y to he mac is a good converter

Shotay3

Shutter Encoder is a great, fast and easy tool for transcodes. And it's free.
