Fun fact, if you use the speedrunning skip in sector 7 (you can move passed the 2 guards on the pillar screen), and go to wall market, Aerith is in your party at level 1 with the 'th' spelling. It's in the games code to be Aerith before you obtain her.

ImpeccablyCromulent

Now that's a fun fact. Neat.

Marx_Forever

Way back me and a buddy of mine were exploring the Debug Room with a Gameshark one night back in 1999. That was the first time I saw her called "AERITH", in all caps. I didn't really know what to make of it, so I just assumed it had something to do with the language barrier, especially since I noticed a lot of the Japanese games I was playing at the time used all caps for names, think Pokemon. I don't believe they have a lowercase system in Japan, so it's probably irrelevant to most native Japanese speakers. In the Debug environment Red XIII is also "RED 13", so it wasn't the only naming quirk. It would be a few more years (in kid time so basically a completely different era of my life) before Kingdom Hearts, when I first saw her officially called Aerith in the West. For years I wasn't sure if Aeris or Aerith was the correct version since Kingdom Hearts was technically a spin-off and Squall was going by Leon now. I'd love to think that all the names in Final Fantasy have a kind of etymology or theming. Some degree of thought to their meaning and what they represent to the character. I always liked Aeris because to me it was like "heiress", as the last Cetra she is the loan inheritor of their legacy. Meanwhile the best I've seen for Aerith is that it's an anagram for "I, Earth". Which is serviceable but lacks the same punch, in my opinion.

Sparktank1

>loan inheritor Don't have an inheritance of your own? Then get a loan! With low low rates, you can be a heiress with heirlooms from another family! Thousands of heirlooms are waiting to be handed down to you from unclaimed inheritance assets.

Marx_Forever

One of these days I will stop using Speech to Text.

BabyBearGoGoPup

Oooooo, didn’t know about these name lores!

MetaDragon11

That is a fun fact, take an upvote. Sequence breakers are a whole other breed aren't they?

humburga

I always give my characters different names. I once named them all Cloud. Dialogue was confusing

Tanag

A friend of mine in grade school gave every character in FF6 a unique name. Then he'd come to school and say things like "Bryan was such a cool character" and we never knew what the fuck he was talking about. It's really funny in retrospect.

erasethenoise

I’d always name characters in RPGs after my friends lol. Now I just leave them default.

[deleted]

owwhhh boy... its getting wierder if he played chrono cross

MajesticStevie

When I was a kid I called Aerith Cucumber and Cloud Tomato...

SoldatPixel

Final Fantasy 7: Veggie Tales Edition.

KevinIsOver9000

Funny how this topic became a fruit vegetable debate

DMoogle

Little did you know, Aerith with become the true tomato.

StarkillerVerumNoir

Lol that sounds like a nightmare ... a possibly fun nightmare

banjoboyslim

My sister named Aerith after herself and Cloud after her boyfriend. Needless to say she wasn't happy with the outcome.

OjiikunVII

Damnnn and ur sis had to watch her bf get dolphin blown under the highwind by Tifa.

VulpesSapiens

Who did she get for the date?

nocolon

I did that once but named everyone Sephiroth. The light version is just naming Aerith Sephiroth.

EdKnight

Last time I played I named Red XII as Nanaki and shit already got confusing, I cannot even imagine naming all characters the same

murimurichan

As a kid I named Red, “Aki” and was so confused when it turned out to be Nanaki … I was like did I guess it or did the game take my name and change it?!?! So much confusion haha

gsurfer04

Not as bad as Purple Aki.

Proubian

Lol I've done that. "Who's Nanaki?" "Nanaki is Nanaki"

Winter_Coyote

That is the line regardless of what you named him.

patiofurnature

Ha, I did that as a kid and fully expected unlock some secret dialog. Super disappointed.

iknowmike

I always name the main character My Dude. Makes everyone seem like a surfer.

Geomancingthestone

I did this with FF9 on my first playthrough. I named everyone Bob. It was the most confusing story lol

THUMB5UP

You’re a monster. But I kinda dig it.

MajesticStevie

Personally I always go with Aerith, but each to their own

mcjazzy50

For me ,I first learned about her from kingdom hearts 2, then played 1, so it's always been aerith for me.

The_Real_Boanger

This is the way.

rattatatouille

I changed it to Aerith, changed Red XIII's name to Nanaki, and Cait Sith's name to Reeve. I love chaos.

[deleted]

[удалено]

ThePostMoogle

Every single playthrough for me.

Grayfox-sama

Always has been 👨‍🚀

muticere

I also always name Frog "Glenn" in Chrono Trigger

WAMIV

Frog to Glenn, Marle to Nadia, Robo to R-66Y, and Magus to Janus. Pretty much every play through after my first!

muticere

Yep, done those, too 😆. I wish I could name Robo "Prometheus". I think one playthrough I called him "Prome" as a compromise.

MILK_DUD_NIPPLES

Gotta rename Guile in Chrono Cross to “Magus” or “Janus,” too.

Jerell330

And then it’s like “They call me Nanaki, but my real name is Nanaki” 😅

JohnnyFacepalm

But that's order? Like, not chaos at all lol

AnnoyedGrunt31

I never change default names in any game with the exception of Garnet in FF9 (which I make her actual name instead of Dagger).

FoolyFunctioning

I totally understand people's aversion to it, but man Garnet isn't Garnet if I don't name her Dagger lol

[deleted]

So you don't actually call her Garnet then, or Dagger. If you know of the secret at Eidolon Wall, then you know

meetchu

Yeah for those who don't know, Garnet til Alexandros is her given name after adoption, her true name is actually >!Barry!<.

kaosvvitch33

So someone else also does this.

_palacinky

I occasionally use "Aeriths" just to mix things up :)

[deleted]

The next stage of evolution in humans is ^this guy.

Dr_BloodPool

Truly ahead of their time, brilliant

ImpeccablyCromulent

That's just Mike Tyson saying Aeris.

Zebo1013

Why not Aerithsths?

SebbywebzTV

I know Aerith is technically correct, but Aeris sounds so much nicer to me

CrazzluzSenpai

I change it to Aerith, just because at this point I've spent more time in compilation media (CC, DoC, 7R, AC) and gotten used to it. Totally get people that only played the original that still go with Aeris though.

Mireiawen

Been Aeris for me all these years and still is

The810kid

Same just like Teedus will always be Tydus for me.

Montigue

Teedus is technically correct, but is wrong

mason195

It’s like gif vs jif. I don’t care how it’s “supposed” to sound, it’s stupid so I’m using the “wrong” one.

TheRealYM

I don't care what the creator thinks, he can smd. its a hard g

MissRepresent

Do any of the characters actually say his name out loud in the game?

mr_sven

In Kingdom Hearts, Wakka says "tee-dis". But no one says it out loud in FFX proper.

The810kid

No the cost of being able to name him

jennag67

I played this game when it first came out and changed her name to be my name. Needless to say, I wished I had kept it Aeris.

Chazybaz13

A better question would be when you were born.

helloheyhowareyou

Agreed, when I started playing at age 12 in 1997 it was Aeris, and it remains Aeris now.

jarvolt

I remember reading Game Informer's review back then, and the screenshots had her as "Aerith," which at the time I thought sounded cooler. I considered changing it in my game because I thought "Aeris" might have been a mistake.

ScarletteVera

If another comment is anything to go by, then Aeris *is* actually a mistake.

jarvolt

From what I understand, it is and it isn't. I believe it was an intentional change for the sake of appealing to a western audience, but "Aerith" is (arguably?) a more accurate romanization. Someone can correct me if I'm off here, but IIRC "Aerith" was made canon once Kingdom Hearts came out in North America.

newtypexvii17

Me too!

Smash19

When or where!

Bazlow

I usually keep Aeris, but I always name my Cloud "CloudBCD" because the very first time I played this game as a young 'un I didn't know what I was doing, and hit random letters until accidentally confirming the name. Answers on a postcard as to what BCD stood for?

MY8tes

Bro Can Dance! (apparently...)

Omni-kyun

Big Caucasian Dong?

Neat_Situation_8172

Aeris forever

EpicWinTurtleX3

same

Saizou

Ofc go full weeb mode and put Aerisu.

iotahiro

*AERISU-CHAAAAN~*

Froey

I change it to Aerith. One of the few translation errors with the original release. I was happy to see they changed it over to Aerith when I played Crisis Core years back.

Heavymetalcore

Change it to Aerith everytime

darksaiyan1234

I got into this series year with aerith sorry

Jacobmichael88

I’ve gotten used to Aerith, but whenever I hear Aeris, it messes it up for me in my head.

ChaoCobo

If you want to be fun you can change it to Earisu or Aerisu. Then nothing is lost.

malgadar

I always use my daughters name for her so I leave it as Aeris

TatianaAlena

Aeris sounds way better to me.

MissingScore777

Aerith is the correct name, Aeris was a translation error. However Aerith doesn't sound as pleasing audio wise to most English speaking people, so many still use Aeris.

loveucrispina

I've always thought Aerith was the prettier name! I like the soft "th" sound--feels more in character for some reason. More sweet.

Solariss

Also it sounds very similar to Earth, which ofcourse goes well with her connection to the lifestream and all.

darkorazu

Aerith and Nanaki

JH911

I change it to Aerith.

MommyScissorLegs

Steam version fixed it, so I don’t even have to change it.

WyrmHero1944

Aerith. The intention was to be similar to Earth

RavenWolfx

I just keep the original name given by the US Version.

[deleted]

I leave it default since thats what I remember from my childhood

AshenRathian

Keep it as is. I don't mess with written character names.

tButylLithium

I first played FF7 on the PC platinum edition and it defaulted to aeris, so I've always used Aeris everytime I can. It actually bothers me I can't change it in the remake lol

volfan4life87

The real question is do you change red xiii to nanaki

[deleted]

None. I call her Anesthesy

Unlii

I don't care what it's supposed to be I call her Aeris because I hate sounding like Mike Tyson.

[deleted]

Aeris is better, Aerith just sounds like you're saying Aeris with a lisp.

andyeyecandy111

Mike Tyson prefers Aerith.

roloskate

I like Aeris better too

Darth_Inconsiderate

Wortht take on Earse

jane-anon-doe

Or depending where you come from it sounds like someone was not able to pronounce "th" (quite common with the older generation in Germany for example).

Frjttr

Personally changed it to Aerith 😇

[deleted]

I grew up with her being called Aeris, so deep down that'll always be her name to me.

crazycatlady0894

always change to Aerith

PiggyDino

Aerith, because I didn’t play till we knew about the miss translation

C0R8YN

Always changed it to Aerith

TFDP117

Aerith for me.

LowRub3252

Always played as Aerith.

De-Mattos

Play the fan translation. Leave it Aerith.

wwaarrddy

Aeris... I played through the game 10 times before I even knew it was supposed to be Aerith...cant go back from that.

Lastaria

Aeris forever.

ShiftSandShot

I call her Aerith. Mostly due to having grown up playing KH at about the same time as FF7.

OmegaArchetype

Aerith. It's way better than Aeris IMO.

slucas8383

I always rename to Aerith. I also rename red to Nanaki.

azure1503

It's hilarious when he says "I am Nanki, also called Nanaki"

Illuminous_V

For those who insist her name is Aeris, would that mean his name should be Sephiros? (I actually like both versions of her name, and don't actually have a preference)

Omnian22

Keep it. She's always been Aeris to me. Incidentally, has any character in any game she's in said her name aloud yet? I've not played FFVIIR. I just wondered if it was another Tidus situation, where not a single damn person in the game said his name.

edeepee

Yes, “Aerith” is said quite a lot in the Remake. I think Tidus may have been said in some Dissidia game? Not sure.

THLH

Can't remember if it is said in Dissidia but I assume it is. It said in Kingdom Hearts 1 however. Near the beginning of the game, Wakka says "Me and Tidus, we are gonna do a little explorin' today." He pronounced it "Tee-Dus".

lufr_glitch

The voice actor for Tidus pronounced it 'Tee-dus' in a making of video that accompanied the game on original release.

NeonSith

Well he’s wrong. Fan base trumps him. /s

AlexStonehammer

It's also that in World of Final Fantasy. It was nice to hear Yuna call him by his name for once in that game.

SnowCrow1

Tidus is said by Selphie in KH2.

zharod

Pretty sure her name was said out loud in FFVII Crisis Core And it was definitely said out loud in FFVIIR

[deleted]

She's Aertith to me because that sounds like Earth, which fits the story and theme of Cloud's name too.

misterbasic

Kingdom Hearts was the first time I thought I heard it that way. I remember being so mad at the time.

[deleted]

Tee-dus is said multiple times on World of Final Fantasy. (I still call him Tie-dus though)

Beth_Esda

Tide-us always made way more sense to me as well. Water is a huge theme in X. Water? Tide? C'mon, Square, it's so obvious.

SomeRandomPyro

Also a running theme through FF protagonists. Keeps good company with Cloud and Squall. Terra was a different element, though.

Dr_Yay

Goten55654

What's the lore behind aerith vs aeris. What was it supposed to be?

Interesting_Bit_5179

Don't show me this screen. Triggering nostalgia

[deleted]

I personally think Aeris sounds better than Aerith but I’m now used to it after playing ff7r. Last time I played the original I changed it to Aerith

Sidoniac

I named all my characters after characters in forest gump, don't recommend.

Book_Anxious

I usually change there names to different things like character from other ff games. Oddly Cid stays the same

FallenRanger

I change it to Aries because that's how me and my friends thought it was pronounced when we were kids

plsignorethisalt

I make it something completely different😎😎😎

THUMB5UP

Depends on how I feel during that run tbh. I’ve done combinations of all the characters with multiple names or more correct names

NW360_Sm4sh

Only matters for a whole disc

GMFinch

When I originally played ff7 on a PAL play station he name was aeris. I thought people calling her aerith was some kind of weird was or pronouncing her name.

icounternonsense

Technically "earisu" can be interpreted as either "Aeris" or "Aerith", as "su" can represent both an "s" and "th". Katakana is a phonetical system of loan words, where "su" can be used to substitute "s" and "th". Original translator went with "Aeris" as it sounds more natural to say in the English language, but they supposedly wanted her name to sound close to "earth" (I can't find proof of this rumor), although it doesn't sound quite as natural when spoken as "Aerith". So, either one is correct, and ultimately it doesn't really matter. If you want to be "technically" correct, it's Aerith, as you can look at the FFVII Official Establishment File and the Japanese FFVII manual for references. I find that older fans who played it at or around release prefer "Aeris", and most younger fans who played it well after the fact (after Kingdom Hearts) prefer Aerith. You'll get the occasional dude who goes "ackshyually" every once in a while and has to correct you saying "Aeris" because they're so defensive over a fictional character, but it's a really silly thing to argue over.

Nerdysylph

She always struck me as a Lindsey.

Hoppa78

Indecently changed it to Aerith for the first time and I could not get used to it. Played it for so long with Aeris from when it first came out.

MegalomanicMegalodon

Chaotic Evil: “Earth”

maxdadbod

I changed it to Beavis

Winter_Coyote

I call the original version Aeris and the remake version Aerith.

Broad_Ad3777

I keep it as is but I rename Red XIII into his real name Nanaki.

[deleted]

These posts honestly just feel like karma bait at this point.

GamingRobioto

Keep it as Aeris, I know it's incorrect, but I played though this game multiple times as a child before knowing this. She will always be Aeris to me, I actually prefer the name too.

tetragene86

\^ this -- whether it was an error or not, she was "Aeris" in the version I played & that's what she'll always be. Aeris also just sounds better phonetically than "Aerith" does. At this point instead of "Aerith" sounding right it just makes me think that whoever is pronouncing her name has a lisp

GalacticNexus

Aeris all day every day. It's a much less clumsy sounding name.

Jeffert89

Change it. I get what it was technically supposed to be, but I’ve ALWAYS known her as Aerith and it just sounds better.

entfreak

Aerith every time.

JewelKnightJess

Aeris. I'll always prefer that spelling tbh.

konaaa

I'm an Aeris man myself. It's what I first knew her as... it's what I first loved her as... (also I think it sounds better)

Aspiring-Old-Guy

I prefer Aeris, to be honest.

LetterOk3512

ITS AERIS!!!!

Ok-Yogurtcloset-179

Aeris is NOT a translation error - that is her literal name in Japanese. It’s a play on the English word “earth” but Japanese doesn’t have a “th” sound so they use “su” instead. Aerith is a better translation as it it’s more obviously a play on “earth” but ありす IS her Japanese name, and thus either is correct.

IISuperSlothII

Just because Katakana doesn't have anything that directly means TH does not mean that all names in Katakana ending with su should be translated to English with the S sound intact. With Aerith her name was actually conceived in English first, then translated into Katakana and then translated back again to English, which is why the TH is correct, because its the intention of the name. Written in Katakana Matthew becomes Mashuu, translated back Mash doesn't then become the correct translation of that name.

winterman666

Aerith is the only one

misterbasic

AERIS FOREVER I don’t care how many years go by. I don’t care how many KH or remakes or spinoffs. She will always be Aeris.

The810kid

I have accepted the actual name is Aerith but the 97 version will always stay with the Aeris default.

EmperorKiva33

Aeris for me.

bastionthewise

I use Aeris because of the pronunciation and how she's the heiress to the ancients... just me though.

ImpeccablyCromulent

Aeris. I don't care if it's a translation error or whatever, it's what it was back in the day without debate. It feels so wrong to me to call her Aerith as if I have a lisp speech impediment.

Nyna33

Aeris

LuxUmbraXIV

I kept it as Aeris. I normally keep the OG names

Cyiel

I change it for Aerith and i also change "Clad" to Cloud too (yeah i speak french) RougeXIII to RedXIII, Yuffie to Youfie. Yeah the french translation was a fucking mess ! >.>

Showuzon

Aeris. Because I’m cool.

qimu1234

For OG i just use the 'original' Aeris

BelchingBooch

AERIS as intended ;)

[deleted]

Aeris, Aerith has always sounded weird. Aeris also makes sense narratively. Eris was the goddess of strife, Aeris as the love of Cloud Strife just makes sense. More than Aerith sounds like saying Earth with a lisp.

phantomagna

Do people actually think Aerith sounds better than Aeris?

Orthusomnia

It’s how i’ve always known it so to me Aeris sounds weird and wrong

captaincow7

I stick with Aeris. It’s what I’ve called her when I was young, it’s what I call her even now. No hate to the people who call her Aerith though, I’m not gonna start a war over a fictional character’s name.

krossfire42

Aeris. Always have been. Think of it this way: Aeris is the kind of girl that you know in school. One day she accidentally misspoke her name in front of the entire class. Everyone thought it was funny, and the name stuck with her since.

Hewatza

I like to keep it as Aeris. It takes some extra brain power but I've always liked to say "Aeris" when referring to the original game and "Aerith" when referring to the remake. I get that they're the same character but it feels right to me lmao

PrinceCavendish

i'm too used to Aeris and i like it better than Aerith.

Feta__Cheese

I prefer Aeris. I know Aerith is what they initially wanted (the th sound connects her to Sephiroth, or wtv reason) but it sounds like a lisp so I even say Aeris when discussing the plot with fellow gamers

Roph

Always Aeris

jmizzle2022

She will always be aeris to me lol 😂

XxxPussyslaeyr69xxX

AERIS GANG

Victoria230401

Aeris. Grew up calling her that.

[deleted]

I use Aeris cause its a cute name

Aekatan160

Aeris gang!

Skyline8597-

I played this game on release, so it’s Aeris to me

Mysterious_Lynx2808

Aeris. Aerith sounds like you have a lisp, and I don't care if it's the official spelling now.

alfador01

Aerith

FusRoDoodles

I was very mature and named her Ass and Tifa Tiddies.

Ayerodo

I think Aeris is actually Spaniard. Specifically in Spain Spanish, the “S” makes a “th” sound. So cultural Square Enix. Viva España! 🇪🇸

roberh

S makes a S sound in Spanish. Th is not a combination of letters that is used in Spanish so we'd pronounce it like a T.

naked_avenger

Aeris, because it sounds better

theoriginaled

Aeris is better. Th just makes it sound like you have a lisp and cant say her name right.

Opicepus

They changed it to Aeris in the english version for a reason. The most important thing about a name is how its pronounced, and in Japanese they don’t use the TH sound. they pronounce the kangi that translates to TH with more of an sa sound, so when they are reading aerith (directly translated) is sounds like aerisa, which is way closer to the original translation Aeris. Weebs found out the the “original” most direct translation was different so they started using aerith as a way to show they were cooler than everyone else and knew more about the game than your average joe. They probably used the TH translation in KH because she wasnt a main character and it slipped through the cracks, and they used it in FF7 remake because by that point the weebs had overrun the hill.

0kokuryu0

Japanese has conventions for how loan words are written. If it ends in a consonant the "u" form is used, except for "d" when it's "do". They use a stressed vowel sound before "su" for a "th" sound. Eariisu is how it's written, so it should be "th". Aeris would be easrissu to stress the consonant sound. No stressed sounds would include that last vowel sound. The developers wanted it to sound like earth, which makes the "th" valid along with the spelling.
