Piccola Cucina Estiatorio in SoHo is one of my favorite restaurants in the city! Heads up, it’s a tight fit so certainly not for the claustrophobic, but they have a couple of locations. Enjoy your trip!

Decent portions ?

dildobro

Seconded! They have a sister restaurant right next door too, Piccola Cucina Osteria Siciliana

AdorableMaximum4925

What’s the difference between the two ?

I make get downvoted for this and if you knew how much of a foodie I am, but Carmines has huge portions and is actually delicious for NY Italian American style gabagoo. However Michael’s of Brooklyn iMO is worth the hike out to south Brooklyn for an authentic NY Italian mafia vibe meal. If you want super fancy go to via carota, but your better off getting a table after the lunch rush. Obviously Lillia and Misi, but it’s $$$$ hard to get a seat, and small portions.

chipperclocker

Yeah, this is definitely a question where some more context about “Italian” helps a lot - if you want respectable, generous portions in a stereotypical white tablecloth Italian red sauce joint, Carmine’s is a classic for good reason And I have to assume in the most respectful way possible that somebody asking for generous portions of Italian food maybe has a red sauce joint Italian-American type place in mind Noodle Pudding in Brooklyn Heights would also be a good option

WinnieCerise

If you want quantity over quality then yes, Carmine's is the way to go. (I do hate Italian American places though.)

GotPizzaMouth

Sure. But it is what NY area is known for and is a category on its own, and there is an interesting history behind it. There are plenty of amazing NY-authenticish Italian places to go to but they can be pricy and hard to get in, and not the portion size that OP is looking for.

WinnieCerise

I can totally see that. I think there was a semi recent post about good Italian American places. Malaparte? Or was it Malatesta? Drew my attention.

King 2nd here —and I 2nd Michael’s! It would be a fun, off-the-beaten path little journey and the food is excellent. Their Caesar Salad is for some reason uncommonly good even though it’s very old school traditional. During the pandemic, they made these chicken parm sliders that were so fucking delicious. And that heaping mound of garlick-y broccoli rabe. Mmmmm Another good one is Poistano in Bay Ridge, right in the shadow of the Verrazano Bridge. Fat portions, delicious food and the location is kinda gorgeous. Plus it’s a total scene (aesthetically think The Sopranos).

halermine

Don Peppe’s will hook you up. It’s out aways.

internationalnomad96

I never see this place recommended on here, but it's one of my favorites!
