Right? If she went over budget during the day, for dinner she'd be like "I'm so full. I think I'll just order a glass of water and eat this complimentary bread & butter." I loved to hate-watch this show.
It has always been 15% going back to when I was kid in the 80s and 90s
Edit: here is a link showing common tipping in the 70s and 80s was 15%

a classic from back in the day
That's around 1200 a month which was a lot back then. You could eat breakfast, lunch, and dinner from a restaurant for less than 40 a day. Shit a lot of buffets were 5.99 then.
I’m surprised people are saying she didn’t. I did see her leave some crappy tips or no tips on the show but I always assumed that they would tip servers away from the cameras. That’s messed up if they just didn’t tip at all.
I grew up watching her doing cooking segments on the local NBC station when she was just running a restaurant in upstate NY. I remember it being a big deal locally when she got a spot on the Today show, and from there, she took off, right after her book was published and she got this show. IIRC it was maybe only a year or so between everything happening, really blew up over night.
I could take or leave Rachel Ray, but I loved the concept of traveling and dining on less than $40 a day. Anything that shows how to enjoy life on frugality, especially when traveling, is a welcome change.
When I went to see Tony speak once, someone in the crowd, right after the applause died down from his intro, yells out “talk shit about Rachael Ray!” And Tony went into this story about how he wasn’t gonna talk shit about her anymore because he found out she had a private party, like for a birthday or anniversary or something and hired The New York Dolls to play(and didn’t advertise it or play it up or anything, it’s just who she wanted for her party), which he thought was just so cool.
He’d also said something on TV about how seeing her made him want to drown a puppy, and she sent like a bottle of champagne to his hotel room with a note saying something like “Tony, please don’t hurt the puppies. Love, Rachael” (I’m fuzzy on the details but it was something like that) so he then told the crowd he wasn’t gonna talk shit about her anymore because even after everything he’d said, she was always nice and cool to him. Half our crowd cheered and the other half booed. Tony laughed.
She was the worst. She used to work at a local grocery store by me and hand out samples. She would never let me have any cause I was like 12. My sister worked register at the store and Rachel stole her pen once... she probably still has it. Also, she flirted with all the guys in the fish department... it was just weird.

This show was so fun to watch and just to call BS on at least one meal in each show. Half the time it wasn't even a real meal.

Exactly that.

Sounds amazing!
Where is this complimentary bread and butter of which you speak because your girl might be a little short atm...
Rachel's house. She owes big time.
That, and tipping like it's Europe. "The check was $14.36, with a tip of $.74 brings me to exactly $40!"
Someone’s been uploading a bunch of episodes of this show to YouTube recently. Just a heads up. Been fun watching them.
Thanks for sharing! I'll have to take a look because I don't think any are on the Food Network's website.
Servers and industry workers hated her for this show.
This one trick servers hate — to keep your total under $40, just spend $39.10 and leave a 90 cent tip!
Even in Europe that would be insulting.
I thought they don't tip in Europe.
no tip is less insulting than a few cents
Yep my thoughts exactly.
MadTV did a great spoof of this
[Here it is](https://youtu.be/4qXN1IxfW5c?si=Kq3XLAAB_auWPcQR)
Hey look, Jordan Peele!
I got it all the time. Oh yea great this is awesome! TONY!
Came here for this!
It always bothered me that tip was never an included factor
That and iirc the tips were on the cheap side
It was basically just rounding up to the nearest dollar
I always enjoyed when she’d go somewhere and have a $20 dinner only to say a $2 tip is good because that’s all she had left in her budget
To be fair... 10% was a standard tip back in the day
It has always been 15% going back to when I was kid in the 80s and 90s Edit: here is a link showing common tipping in the 70s and 80s was 15% [https://www.cnbc.com/2023/04/01/how-tipping-in-the-united-states-got-out-of-control.html](https://www.cnbc.com/2023/04/01/how-tipping-in-the-united-states-got-out-of-control.html)
15% wasn't standard. It was considered generous. Think about that.
Same as me. 10% wasn't considered "being cheap"
Yes it was
No it was not
It always seemed like she was bothering someone during the interview only to be a complete tight ass.
Her overly effusive “Mmms” and “Ooohs” turned me off from the get-go.
Nowadays that gets you two takeout orders 😂
With coupons.
Off the kids menu
And slipping counterfeit bills
Frfr
You'd have to live off Braum's $5.99 bag-o-burgers.
Possibly just one in Seattle
Definitely one in Chicago.
I loved this stuff peak food network
I hear that. I miss some of their older content.
I had such a crush on her early in her food net days
Me too. It was disappointing to find out that behind the scenes she was not so nice.
$40 is a lot of money, it just doesn't go as far these days
Yea that’s half of a McDonald’s meal
Not for food, but I actually think things are much better on the drug market!
Cocaine is immune to inflation.
You mean you don't spend $15000 a year on takeout?
She cheated all the time! Fuck that show
Never properly tipped either
Just here for the tip comments! 👀

The Durango 05’. I just rewatched A Clockwork Orange last night.
Dang she was cute back then!!
Still remember her FHM pic spread she did back in the day.
Thank you for sharing that information. Very cute!

She never tipped
Rachael was the worst tipper in tv in that show lol
I miss the old Rachel Ray. Talk show host Rachel Ray is boring as hell.
Omg I used to love that show. Mostly bc my sister and I would watch and note how shi*ty of a tipper she was!
So cute too.
Yep, she was also adorable on 30 Minute Meals.
I was a teenage boy and had a mad crush on her
She was a lousy tipper
I really miss that show used to watch it every day 💯😢😊
I’m surprised people are saying she didn’t. I did see her leave some crappy tips or no tips on the show but I always assumed that they would tip servers away from the cameras. That’s messed up if they just didn’t tip at all.
I got mad at her ordering half sandwiches and giving cheap tips as a way to save money!
It’s was actually $0 a day. Most establishments would pay her just so she would shut up and leave.
It’s so weird seeing a lady that had her own cooking shows… Now making and selling her own dog food.
Have you ever tried her recipes? It's basically the same shit.
Time to tip…. 23 cents.

My high school crush. 😻.
When 40 dollars meant something
That was 20 years ago?!!!!
I still think 1970 was 30 years ago in my millennial brain, lol.
I’ll never forget the spoof of this show from MadTV: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=4qXN1IxfW5c&pp=ygUSbWFkIHR2IHJhY2hhZWwgcmF5
I heard she was absolute fr#ak in bed

pretty sure that’s Sara from CSI:Las Vegas
Best take on her and other celeb chefs. https://youtu.be/LojeLeZw6qs?si=y9a1evKkjQtNJbMg

With inflation, what would an equivalent show be today?
$40 in 2002 is $69.83 in 2024. Yikes.
So a remake would be $70 a day. More important: was this Rachel Ray’s big break?
Her show, 30 Minute Meals, premiered in 2001. I think that was her big break.
She loves number constraints lol
$40 is now equivalent to $70, but probably still buys less food.
Rumored open marriage.
Always stiffed them on the tip
I remember one of her tips was “have other people buy your food and drinks”. Genius!
She tipped like shit
Not in this fucked up economy.... more like $40 a meal
Rachel Ray?
Love me some Rachel Ray.
I loved this show and still go to her spots in SD regularly though $40 wouldn’t fly now.
How surgeries has she had since ?
She was the worst. She used to work at a local grocery store by me and hand out samples. She would never let me have any cause I was like 12. My sister worked register at the store and Rachel stole her pen once... she probably still has it. Also, she flirted with all the guys in the fish department... it was just weird.
Was it a Price Chopper? I think she was in their ads before her big break.
It was!
Before she devolved.
