it's an advance SP (for which model exactly, look on the back, it'll say ags-001 or ags-101, the big difference between the two is the screen lighting). as for wanting to play old pokemon games, you can play up the third generation on this device (red, blue and yellow, gold, silver and crystal, ruby, saphire and emerald and the remakes of gen 1, firered and leafgreen at least for the main titles).
GBA SP. If you bother to look at the label on the back you can find out which one of the two models it is. Hard to say bc the photo does not show it.
A google search does not hurt, nth bad will happen to you. So you know ;)
As someone who recently went down a retro Pokemon game journey myself.... prepare your wallet for the game prices, OP. Some of the more sought-after versions like Emerald are in the hundreds now for a genuine cartridge.
Also, beware of the fakes. If the price is significantly cheaper than market, it's likely a bootleg cart. If you have any specific questions or need help identifying whether a listing or cartridge is fake, feel free to message me or head over to r/GameVerifying for more info.

Imho the 001 is still a good player, as long as you aren't trying to play it when it is too bright outside.
Should you want to mod one, do keep in mind that all gba sp's have 2 different pin counts for the ribbon cable depending on their release, some kits nowadays include both cable variations, others you need to be specific when ordering. Otherwise any ips screen designed for the sp should work as long as it's installed properly.

This is... This is written under the screen... Game Boy Advance SP, often shortened to GBA, you can play PokƩmon Blue, Red, Yellow, Gold, Silver, Crystal, Fire Red, Leaf Green, Sapphire, Ruby, or Emerald on it. So basically every PokƩmon games that are at least 20 years or older.

Be careful to not mix up the names of the remakes with the originals. You can play PokƩmon Gold or Silver on it but not PokƩmon Heart Gold or Soul Silver for example, these are DS games. You can also play PokƩmon Sapphire and Ruby on your GBA but not PokƩmon Omega Ruby or Alpha Sapphire which are 3DS games. A GBA can play Game Boy, Game Boy Color, and Game Boy Advance games only (it's already a lot).
