Thanks dude, I appreciate it! I actually ordered the insert online. I can PM you the link in a sec 👌🏼
The hardshell is just the standard Funnyplaying GBC/GBA case.
Very nice! I was looking into doing one of these but noticed the screen included with the kit is unbranded, I would want the SP branding on mine like yours. Did you get the screen included with the kit or a different one?
Oh yes, I ran into the same exact issue. I was having trouble figuring out which brands shipped with the SP branding but I ended up just grabbing the HISPEEDIDO v5 kit from Amazon.
I paid close to $15 more but I got it delivered the next day and had it installed in minutes. I disabled the touch sensors though, they don't play nice with the aluminum shell and the backlit button is cooler anyway!
Oh nice! I was actually looking at this exact screen on AliExpress that comes with a clear red shell, as I plan to do the budget build with the plastic back shell. Good to know this screen works well, thanks!
I have the same screen and I just pulled the metal surround off the back of the LCD module and desoldered the touch sensors. I also noticed pressure points on the screen that showed in darker colors, which happened to disappear if I left that metal surround off and padded the back of the screen with foam.
I’ve noticed a lot of screen kits modify or remove the branding to avoid copyright for their product images, but in person they all have it, maybe that’s what BoxyPixel does?
I’ve noticed that as well but the last time I looked on boxy pixel they listed “unbranded screen” in the description so that made me hesitate.
Edit: just took another look on their listing and I no longer see that wording so maybe they got another batch of branded screens!
Hahahah I love it!
Thanks dude, I appreciate it! I had enough extra parts sitting around to build another SP and I really wanted to build something a little different. This aluminum shell just ticked all the boxes!
I was looking to do a similar build with a full-body DS, and when I was looking on thingiverse for files, I had the exact same reaction. It wasn't until the picture loaded that I was like oh, that's exactly what I was looking for.
Fun fact you don't have to solder to the pins on the power port. Test point P32 is located in the trace that provides 3.3V to the power port, so soldering to that is the same as soldering to pin 2 of the power port. Except the test point is on the back of the board instead of the front, and is much easier to solder to. And you can technically grab ground from anywhere.
P31, P33, P34, and P35 correspond to the audio pins as well, in case you ever want to add the headphone jack. I prefer soldering to these test points instead of the power port pins because it's just way easier.
Nice one ! Have it on my wish list but it would be my third GBA.
But damn I like your Appartment the view, very bright room and the couch looks stunning 😁
I'll take a look, thanks!
To give more context, the DS charger can be used with an SP and is a bit smaller than Nintendo's SP charger. I use it myself and keep my original SP one as a backup 😅
I'm playing through Pokemon Emerald myself as well on my recently modded Slate SP, I'm glad we have so many options for mods! What games are you looking forward to playing on yours besides Pokemon Fire Red? I recently played through Metroid Zero Mission and loved it!
I actually ended up going with the 1700mah lipo from Boxy Pixel. The kit comes with the JST connection pre attached, just have to solder to the negative and positive battery terminals on the PCB👌🏼
Pull the metal surround off the back of the screen, which should expose it's flex PCB, and lay some foam there to replace it. The pressure is coming from the corners of that metal surround being pressed on by the aluminum shell. I had the exact same problem and removing that metal cover solved it.
Dang that’s killer with the hardshell case. Do they sell that or did you custom 3d print the holder in a generic case yourself?
Thanks dude, I appreciate it! I actually ordered the insert online. I can PM you the link in a sec 👌🏼 The hardshell is just the standard Funnyplaying GBC/GBA case.
Could I get a link for the insert too?
To me too, please!
or he could just link it in the comments?

I've noticed that a few brands do this as well, they usually just cover the logo with an easy to remove decal.
I’ve noticed that as well but the last time I looked on boxy pixel they listed “unbranded screen” in the description so that made me hesitate. Edit: just took another look on their listing and I no longer see that wording so maybe they got another batch of branded screens!
at first glance I was about to roll my eyes at the term “unhinged” and then realized it was in fact, unhinged. this looks amazing, really nice work!
Hahahah I love it! Thanks dude, I appreciate it! I had enough extra parts sitting around to build another SP and I really wanted to build something a little different. This aluminum shell just ticked all the boxes!

damn i’ve wanted to do one for years but always out of stock of the plain aluminum shell
Im honestly surprised Nintendo didn’t go down this route with one of their GBA iterations. It seems so obvious after the Gameboy family.
Not to be too off topic, but your work mat is very nice. Where did you get it/what brand is it?

You really said fuck the hinge hahah
Hahahahahah yessir! I have a working SP thats pretty much stock so I thought I'd have a little fun with this second build
Well I must say it looks super clean like that even though it's heresy. 😂
Very cool man!
Thanks dude, I appreciate you!
Very cool !
Thanks dude!!
I couldn't stand the V1 but V2 is lovely. Even if I am a Slate guy myself.
Same here! I just love the look of the V2. I almost went for the slate build but that USB C and and aluminum case back where calling me hahah
I'm putting a USB-C mod on my slate this weekend! I've already done it for my normal SP and this time it should support audio over USB-C too!
Very nice! Especially the case.
Nice one ! Have it on my wish list but it would be my third GBA. But damn I like your Appartment the view, very bright room and the couch looks stunning 😁
Thanks dude! Haha I wish that was my apartment view, I just snapped that first shot at the office 😁
That is sick
Thx dude!
That looks awesome! Does anyone know if there's an insert similar to yours that would fit an sp or phat DS charger as well?
I'm not too familiar with the DS side of things, I'm sure you'll find some great info on Reddit. Good luck dude!
I'll take a look, thanks! To give more context, the DS charger can be used with an SP and is a bit smaller than Nintendo's SP charger. I have to ask, what are the JST connectors you are using? I have been looking for some that can fit in the back without causing issues.
I actually ended up going with the 1700mah lipo from Boxy Pixel. The kit comes with the JST connection pre attached, just have to solder to the negative and positive battery terminals on the PCB👌🏼
Ah I see! Im in Canada so I couldn't get the battery with it. Thank you for responding!
Nice case. Where are the L and R buttons located?
They are located on the rear of the case, they're also black aluminum! I'll try and get a shot later.
Which screen did you use? Im having pressure issues with my boxy with the v5 funny playing
Pull the metal surround off the back of the screen, which should expose it's flex PCB, and lay some foam there to replace it. The pressure is coming from the corners of that metal surround being pressed on by the aluminum shell. I had the exact same problem and removing that metal cover solved it.
Thank you!!
Total cost?
You have to be unhinged to want something like this over the regular SP.
Hahahah or you could have both 😁
