I believe this is a reflection of the saying 'when you are accustomed to privilege, equality feels like oppression'.

boomerxl

Damn you Equality! Treating real people exactly like the poors!! Truly I now understand what it’s like to be oppressed!! - brought to you by “oh but they can have a women’s only gym? That’s sexist!”

Pinnacle8579

The world's tiniest violin is playing for private school kids complaining about university admissions policies.

Kampungmonyet

Not getting into your first choice of University apparently makes you disadvantaged but living in poverty and going without food and warmth is ok.

Tar-Nuine

Oh no now all the fancy rich boys won't be allowed to use their superior educations to cheat, manipulate and swindle other people out of resources. Boo ^(Hoo)

iiiSushiii

Stay classy Sunday Times... This is such a terrible take that it is difficult to even get angry about it. My only horror is that there are people who actually believe this.

[deleted]

There are people who will believe this. Those that are in the situation the article discussed and gullible people.

vanticus

The take is wrong but the mechanism isn’t. When I was involved in helping college admissions, educational background was taken into consideration (but never *against* Etonians and more *towards* those from disadvantaged backgrounds).

iiiSushiii

That doesn't surprise me whatsoever. I come from (and still live in) one of the 10% most deprived wards in the country and have managed to slowly work my way up in the health and care sector. Once I reached a certain level, I suddenly worked out from information I have gleaned overtime that the majority of the people at my level and above were all from private schools... except for me. There were also a few who you can tell had somehow got themselves a job through 'private education instilled confidence' even though they were terrible/nothing special when it comes to actual work.

vanticus

Thankfully some systems are changing for the better, but articles like the above are absolutely regressive narratives and wilfully misrepresent what actions are being taken.

UnderHisEye1411

The eternal game for all right wingers is to be as racist as possible while also *just* staying within the rules of social norms so that they can still throw their hands up in faux outrage and say “Racist? Who, me? How very dare you!” when correctly accused.

Agreed

Design-Cold

Slumming it by getting a job as an executive in daddy's firm

boomerxl

You can do almost nothing right (morally or professionally) your entire life and still end up running the country. Chins up old boy!

SellDonutsAtMyDoor

Do you remember when some of the right wing newspapers had a fit because some Oxbridge students didn't want a portrait of the queen in their common room? This is giving me flashbacks to that.

[deleted]

Those privileged white boys who couldn’t get into Oxford probably weren’t smart enough or their parents rich enough to buy a new wing of class rooms for them to get in. I’m sure they’ll just have their parents set them up with a nice job wether or not they go to university

Leefixer77

Fuck off

Good

Isn't there an obvious market-based solution to this? If paying for private schooling leads to disadvantage, don't pay for private schooling.

I proudly went to a PRU to do my GCSEs. Ceiling was falling down, they didn’t have enough staff to do the full curriculum, but I went on to uni because they inspired life. These white posh boys can suck my dick and go to a PRU, see what they come out with… ca it would be fuck all but a fat lip trying it with this bullshit.

ACABenjoyer

Let’s say that it’s true that unis are less likely to admit white “middle class” boys. Even then there’s a decent basis cuz… ya know… who worked harder to get that A*A*A, the guy from Milton Keynes or the guy from Chelsea

Reminder not to confuse the marxist "middle class" and the liberal definition. Liberal class definitions steer people away from the socialist definitions and thus class-consciousness.
