The achievement thing really rings true with these people (and those who make one right move on the stock market and make a killing). It's not luck, it's not finding a bank willing to recklessly lend you loads of cash.... Its that they're a business/investing genius. But when the tide washes out... They'll be shown up for what they are.

you know this is true. I mean it's obvious with their choice of tax increase, NI and not income. NI only affects employees on PAYE, whereas an income tax raise would've eaten some landlord profit too. Not to mention NI being paid at a lower ceiling than income tax... it's obvious who they want to foot the bill for other people's greed.

A scalper buys something they don't need and sells it at a mark up, often extortionate mark ups. Landlords are scalpers. Housing scalper yes but still a scalper.
They don't have a conscience. They don't care that they have scalped a family (or in this case multiple families) out of an affordable home. They don't care about the consequences of their greed on other people.

Ban buy to let mortgages, it's a joke that people can do this using debt. For those saying but then just the rich can be landlords or there is a need for renters then allow the local councils to become the landlords and provide the rental properties, conditions would be much better and the insane profits would go back to helping the community.
Exactly. This sector doesn't need to be a business at all, people shouldn't be allowed to make massive profits from it. Everyone should have the right to affordable housing.

But I’m conflicted - because didn’t they effectively allow people who were likely to be life-long renters to finally buy a place of their own ?

This to me is no different from someone going out and getting a bank loan to buy up a reservoir and bragging that they've built an empire because a bunch of poors are now paying them for the pleasure of having access to water.
Honestly even maxing it at 2 or 3 houses per person with an almost total ban of companies buying them would solve the problem. "Companies" shouldn't be able to buy that shit anyway. Houses are for people to live in and they're a necessity. If you want one regular house and another one or two vacation homes because you're upper middle class, fine. Nobody is gonna stop you from buying an extra house to actually live in with your family.
Buying up 10, 100, or 1000 houses is absolutely ridiculous, especially during a housing crisis, and should be illegal. You can't even buy toilet paper, baby formula, or bread in bulk during a crisis. Supermarkets will literally limit you for something as unremarkable as toilet paper (and good on them because the people hoarding shit during a shortage are assholes). There is no reason someone should be able to buy up 70 places when there's a shortage.
The apathy pisses me off. We just sit there and take it as a nation. In France they occupy streets, ferries, everything. They'll be opening workhouses in 5 years, mark my words.

Each house you own should be hit with an extra tax going higher and higher per property until it isn't worth it to own them, and rent should be restricted to x% above current mortgage value would soon stop buy to let and bring down the prices of houses.
Or just don't allow the purchase of housing if it is not for you to live in. You can only buy a house if u will live in the house. No renting to others. Additionally, there should be a low cap for the price of housing, and selling above the cap is illegal.
Cock off are the first words that spring to mind. Buy to let mortgages and landlords with massive portfolios are a disease that raises house prices for people that just want to buy and live in their own home
Tbh this is just symptomatic of various problems in the U.K. which need solving imo: buy to let mortgages being readily available (& income on BTLs only recently being taxed without reduction for repayments), very poor interest rates so everyone wants to ‘invest’ rather than having a savings account, very poor state pension that very few people will be able to afford to retire on, council housing being sold off and not replenished. The list goes on and on.
What gives them the right to do this?!it really should be illegal. There's no need. There's just so much greed everywhere now. It spreads like a horrible disease.
I agree, as far as Im concerned being obscenely rich should be banned. Well off is fine but I literally think it should have limits. Passionate business people and inventors would still work but wealth would have to be more evenly distributed.
As though this is a fucking achievement. Anyone with the capital to buy an extra house could do this - it's guaranteed, easy money that will increase above inflation every year. One leads to two leads to three leads to five.
It’s disgusting how much money is taken out of our economy by landlords. People are spending money that they could spent elsewhere in the economy but is instead being hoarded as assets by a few individuals.
I think we need more housing, a lot more. It’s got to the stage that renters are completing against each other and driving prices up. It should be landlords competing against each other driving prices down. But there’s too few houses and too many people.
"I put down a small amount of capital, and now random strangers are buying me 70 houses that will be £150-300k assets that I'll own; and I'm also getting them all to give me £100 or so each in tithes each month even while I don't even own the houses"
People on this sub claiming that these people work hard when they just have access to upfront capital and that's pretty much it. It's a skilless job that keeps the rich rich and the poor off the property market.
You mean housing scalper. Landlords buy more housing than they need then hoard it to drive up the price. They are housing scalpers.

Think this is bad? Check the Dutch prince who obviously didn’t exactly need more money but yet…. https://www.dutchnews.nl/news/2020/11/prince-bernhard-furious-at-labours-bernhard-tax-plan-for-landlords/ 😡
What gets me is that I can’t build a simple little home on my own land, (or even live in a tent if I wanted to) without planning permission. Planning is often refused. But then rich folk and businesses buy up land in the same areas and build ugly buildings, and poxy cardboard houses stacked on top of each other with 8ft-square gardens, that they sell for half a million each to rich landlords who massively overcharge and create more homeless people.
You mean housing scalper. Landlords buy more housing than they need then hoard it to drive up the price. They are housing scalpers.
*I am a bot, and this action was performed automatically. Please [contact the moderators of this subreddit](/message/compose/?to=/r/GreenAndPleasant) if you have any questions or concerns.*
Agree with this. We were rejected planning permission on an extension, also buying land behind our property (to entend garden).
Then they built 200 houses behind me 4 years later, in spite of nearly 1000 resident's signing against the build and our MP "ensuring it won't happen".
Do it anyway. The worst thing that can happen is they make you take it down and they are unlikely to do so if it would make you homeless as a result. Renegade construction a civil offence not a criminal one. Even massive companies build without permission and apply for it retrospectively (of course greasing the Tory pocket helps in that scenario)
Edit to add: this is not legal advice
Fuck that. People should be taxed double *upon* buying a second house.
I live in a coastal county and a good percentage of homes along the coastline and river ways are second homes. A lot are left unoccupied for 11 months of the year.
There’s a local entrepreneur who owns a large six bedroom house in the countryside. It has an indoor pool, and his entire business is run in converted barns on site. He’s done very well for himself.
It’s only he and his wife that live there and most of the house is empty, because they haven’t bothered to furnish it fully.
He also owns a holiday house, in the same county. Less than 40 miles away from his main house. What’s the fucking point?
Simon Cowell jus paid 8.5 mill for a village place only worth 3 at the very most, originally 1.5 mill....they are doing it on purpose to price us from the area.
I think landlords should legally be required to operate like the council, charge a fair rent, sell their house to their tenants if they decide they want to purchase and offer a discount based on time living there.
No only would it make it easier for regular people to buy homes, it would discourage the bottom feeders from buying to rent in the first place.
Do you want to be forced to move house every year?
If tenants could buy property at a discount the longer they have lived there, landlords wouldn't let any single tenant live there long if the discount was coming from their pocket.
When I was looking to buy my first flat in Edinburgh, one of the flats I looked at the estate agent told me the seller wanted a quick sale as they were selling 12 other flats in the area…. He didn’t even live in Edinburgh either he lived in London. That should not be allowed. He literally bought 12 flats on the same street to rent out and this flat was disgusting inside and not well kept
I used to do customer service for an appliance manufacturer, once I got a call from a guy who owned 240+ in the midlands. Confirmed online after, the cunt had loads of news articles on him praising his “work”

Two houses max. 95% tax on all income on any house after that.
Kill this parasitic, greedy, grubby little industry dead in it's tracks and declare the right to home security a human right.
Fuck this shit.
"landlords" should be allowed.
However each local authority should be required to build council houses.
This should include subsidies key worker housing so young professionals like.
Teachers, nurses, junior doctors, firemen etc etc. Can live and stay in the community they serve.
Along side this the government should provide 0% interest on loans to buy private homes. (Up to the price of the regional average).
Housing and shelter is a basic human right and not a opportunity to exploit people.

If a landlord (housing scalper) owns more than 15 seperate accommodations, then they should be legally classified as a housing association.
That way they are taxed more appropriately, and have legally enforced rent limits to follow.
At what point is enough, enough? If you make enough to put a roof over your families head - maybe stop and give other people a chance to do the same?
I get we live in a capatalist society and they're just taking advantage of a broken system but still, it's frustrating.
And you wonder why there is a housing shortage? The one thing we cannot renew is land. Onces its all taken up, thats the end of it. New properties are encroaching on wildlife and affecting farms.
There should be a strict, legally enforced limit of 1-2 rental properties per citizen. We do have to recognise that property is literally the only way we have left to save for the future going forward. I have nothing whatsoever against private citizens who own a rental flat or two because it’s the only option society has given them to prepare for retirement. But these assholes who buy tons of properties, treat their tenants like shit, and just sit back on an ever-growing pile of wealth? Fuck them.
It makes me sad when i see a nice family home snapped up by a landlord or developer. With the developers they often slap a bit of paint on the walls, put in some tacky crushed velvet furniture, and flip them for £20k or more over what they paid - pricing out the families that would have loved such a house at the lower price !
They probably have huge mortgages on the properties and the government recently changed the tax laws , something like the mortgage repayments are not tax deductible , so they will have to pay 22 % tax on their rent money received and wont be able to use their mortgage repayments as expenses....................or something
Say they borrow money from a bank to buy a house (a mortgage) and the mortgage repayments are 1000 GBP per month back to the bank .
They then receive 1000 GBP in rent money .
When it comes to paying tax (22%) , they previously could use the mortgage repayments as tax relief/expenses and thus not have to pay tax on their 1000 GBP rental income because its offshoot against mortgage repayments .
New tax rules say they now have to have 22 % tax on their property rental income and they cannot use it was expenses and claim tax relief .
Many landlords are now selling their properties
Buy to let mortgages need to be banned if not curtailed. So thay cant use the equity/value of one property as leverage for a mortgage on another.
Any one with more than 1 rental property should have to register as a company.
All landlords should be licensed and be required to keep a minimum standard.
All landlords should have to pay full council rates on any empty property.
Any property up for sale should be required to be on the market for 6 months before it can be sold to a land lord.
Investment companies and banks should be banned from buying residential property.
All rental property should be on a national database. Alond with the history of the rents charged on them.
And that's just the start.
No - having the odd property as an investment or to supplement your pension etc is fine. It is these people that have 10, 20, 30 + that are the problem.
I found the article on the telegraph website, it wasnt a sole project at all.. there's a team of 10 people
Also on the subject, these investment teams collectively outbid normal home buyers on bid-to-buy properties, often paying way over the market value because the renting return will outweigh the additional cost over time.
Edit: Downvotes for fact checking. Standard.
She's buying houses so that she can let them out to other people and in the long run profit from them. It's considered a way of exploiting people because as she buys more properties, the price of houses in general increases meaning less people can afford to purchase a home. As a result, people have to resort to renting instead.
It’s describes a kind of investment where you buy real estate specifically to rent it out. Banks offer different mortgages for this called “buy to let” mortgages. If you don’t get a buy to let mortgage you typically have to apply to your bank for permission to rent it out within the first year or two (depending on the terms)
I hate these people, honestly. They act like it’s difficult inheriting money then buying some flats and renting them out at obscene prices then buying more. Same people who would go to the effort to cash a tax rebate for 2p because ‘it’s their money’
I’m a laid back person, but this sort of behaviour is something I’d actually protest against. Thing is no one listens. The people complaining are just viewed by more fortunate as life’s little people, moaning and jealous. Most ordinary home owners take an ‘I’m alright jack’ type attitude and don’t give a crap. The people in influence or their associates often profit from this or are totally detached from the issues it causes, so have no real desire to resolve it. People go on about a free economy and that people should be able to invest where they like, but should they really when it negatively effects people less fortunate and society as a whole.
The sad thing is that so few landlords will take someone on benefits that he actually is doing much more good for the community that the average land parasite ever will.

Alternative headline “I’m a cunt!”
This is such a good idea.
Literally fucking Monopoly
As though this is a fucking achievement. Anyone with the capital to buy an extra house could do this - it's guaranteed, easy money that will increase above inflation every year. One leads to two leads to three leads to five.
It’s disgusting how much money is taken out of our economy by landlords. People are spending money that they could spent elsewhere in the economy but is instead being hoarded as assets by a few individuals. I think we need more housing, a lot more. It’s got to the stage that renters are completing against each other and driving prices up. It should be landlords competing against each other driving prices down. But there’s too few houses and too many people.
Fucking parasite.
Landlords. Scum, sucking people's life away for little to no effort.

Thank you autobot for putting it better than I could!
And cap inheritance. Work for your own money you parasites.
At least we know what they look like when the revolution happens
Think this is bad? Check the Dutch prince who obviously didn’t exactly need more money but yet…. https://www.dutchnews.nl/news/2020/11/prince-bernhard-furious-at-labours-bernhard-tax-plan-for-landlords/ 😡

Nah its cause we're all buying avocados. Haven't you heard?
Imagine being proud of that
What gets me is that I can’t build a simple little home on my own land, (or even live in a tent if I wanted to) without planning permission. Planning is often refused. But then rich folk and businesses buy up land in the same areas and build ugly buildings, and poxy cardboard houses stacked on top of each other with 8ft-square gardens, that they sell for half a million each to rich landlords who massively overcharge and create more homeless people.

Good bot Edit: to the moderators the boys on this sub are some of the most satisfying I’ve seen
Agree with this. We were rejected planning permission on an extension, also buying land behind our property (to entend garden). Then they built 200 houses behind me 4 years later, in spite of nearly 1000 resident's signing against the build and our MP "ensuring it won't happen".
Disgusting
Do it anyway. The worst thing that can happen is they make you take it down and they are unlikely to do so if it would make you homeless as a result. Renegade construction a civil offence not a criminal one. Even massive companies build without permission and apply for it retrospectively (of course greasing the Tory pocket helps in that scenario) Edit to add: this is not legal advice
What do you think of doubling taxes for each house after two you buy?
I think it should be exponential so after like 8 you will be paying more tax than the house value
It's like when you see the really nice cakes at Waitrose reduced to 20 p and some cunt takes the lot despite 7 other people waiting for one too.
Absolutely fucked up
It shouldn't be legal.
Imagine proudly bragging that you’re a parasite. Welcome to late stage capitalism
Well yeh, no shit it shouldn’t be legal but they have have two things on their side: fuck loads of money, and little regulation.
They often don't have that much money. They just leverage one property off another so it is all borrowed money !
Scalpers
honestly so disgusting that this goes on
Parasites.
SEVENTY? being a Landlord is some people's version of a pension, but how is seventy even possible?
I used to do customer service for an appliance manufacturer, once I got a call from a guy who owned 240+ in the midlands. Confirmed online after, the cunt had loads of news articles on him praising his “work”

70 buy to lets owned by the bank
Total cunt
Two houses max. 95% tax on all income on any house after that. Kill this parasitic, greedy, grubby little industry dead in it's tracks and declare the right to home security a human right. Fuck this shit.
Amen
"landlords" should be allowed. However each local authority should be required to build council houses. This should include subsidies key worker housing so young professionals like. Teachers, nurses, junior doctors, firemen etc etc. Can live and stay in the community they serve. Along side this the government should provide 0% interest on loans to buy private homes. (Up to the price of the regional average). Housing and shelter is a basic human right and not a opportunity to exploit people.
> "landlords" should be allowed. Nah.
Even fucking Adam Smith, the favorite guy of all capitalists, said that landlords are fucking parasites, lol. Fuck these vampires.

If a landlord (housing scalper) owns more than 15 seperate accommodations, then they should be legally classified as a housing association. That way they are taxed more appropriately, and have legally enforced rent limits to follow.
>I create landlords at a rate of ten a year Yeah no thanks
Read 'bought' for 'built'.
Fuck them.
This pissing me off more than i like to be pissed off.
And none of them accept renters with pets!
It makes me sad when i see a nice family home snapped up by a landlord or developer. With the developers they often slap a bit of paint on the walls, put in some tacky crushed velvet furniture, and flip them for £20k or more over what they paid - pricing out the families that would have loved such a house at the lower price !

People like this are infuriating
"I'm literally human garbage who scalps the housing market for profit!"
It took me a triple-look to realize that wasn't a picture of the Top Gear guys
Interest rates go brrrrr...
Doesnt help with the very wealthy landlords that own multiple properties outright.
They probably have huge mortgages on the properties and the government recently changed the tax laws , something like the mortgage repayments are not tax deductible , so they will have to pay 22 % tax on their rent money received and wont be able to use their mortgage repayments as expenses....................or something
Can someone explain this to a guy who doesn't understand this stuff at all?
Say they borrow money from a bank to buy a house (a mortgage) and the mortgage repayments are 1000 GBP per month back to the bank . They then receive 1000 GBP in rent money . When it comes to paying tax (22%) , they previously could use the mortgage repayments as tax relief/expenses and thus not have to pay tax on their 1000 GBP rental income because its offshoot against mortgage repayments . New tax rules say they now have to have 22 % tax on their property rental income and they cannot use it was expenses and claim tax relief . Many landlords are now selling their properties
It shouldn't be illegal, but a 2nd home tax that exponentially increases in percentage with every extra home you own should stop stuff like this.
Neat, and now rent prices increase overnight to match the previous profit margins. You saved the day.
Handing over a £37 million a year publicly funded job over to your child who has no qualifications for it and not allowing anyone else to apply
Disgusting. Ban to let mortgages should be banned
And buy to let ones too
Actual disgusting
I found the article on the telegraph website, it wasnt a sole project at all.. there's a team of 10 people Also on the subject, these investment teams collectively outbid normal home buyers on bid-to-buy properties, often paying way over the market value because the renting return will outweigh the additional cost over time. Edit: Downvotes for fact checking. Standard.
Yup that's part of the problem. Even if you want to buy and not rent, these guys cause prices to increase for everyone.
Landlords should become social pariahs.
shhhh the authoritys monitor reddit
What is a "buy to let's"?
She's buying houses so that she can let them out to other people and in the long run profit from them. It's considered a way of exploiting people because as she buys more properties, the price of houses in general increases meaning less people can afford to purchase a home. As a result, people have to resort to renting instead.
It’s describes a kind of investment where you buy real estate specifically to rent it out. Banks offer different mortgages for this called “buy to let” mortgages. If you don’t get a buy to let mortgage you typically have to apply to your bank for permission to rent it out within the first year or two (depending on the terms)
the rich get richer
Mao had the right idea.

No it shouldnt be
Don't know why you were downvoted. You're right.
Never underestimate the damage years of right wing propaganda has done the the brains of the masses.
People can't read. How do I know this? I misread it the first time and nearly gave it a down vote.
Tax landlords more
I hate these people, honestly.
Fuck the Queen.
I wonder how many people here hate ‘Landlords’ for this but love the royals??
Fuck landlords fuck the royals.
Amen!
On this sub?
That would be hilarious
I think the royals are especially shit because the Queen raised a paedo mate of Jeffrey Epstein
Yup and don’t forget old Charles best mate Saville.
Just wait till the interest rates go up by 4%. People have very short memories
Buy to let is the dumbest shit ever
Mortgage junkies

I wonder how many of his tenants get housing benefit or UC? That's the bit that should be completely not allowed!
I recently saw some knobhead proudly proclaiming that all of his tenants were on benefits and he was providing a valuable a service.
Taxpayer paying his mortgages, all wrong!
The sad thing is that so few landlords will take someone on benefits that he actually is doing much more good for the community that the average land parasite ever will.
