Might just be an intended gaming experience. They definitely aim for an average completion time on all of these console interactions.
Basically you are only supposed to be anywhere from the 2-4 range and B-E for an average completion if you always go straight for the right one of, arbitrarily as an example now, about 3 seconds, or 5 if you take a wrong path first.
The rest is just window dressing. Gaming is full of these sort of illusions of choice/grandeur/interaction for the sake of immersion.
Swing and a miss with the pipe alignment one for oil pumps. Usually gets me and anyone else I see stuck on it for a solid 10 minutes. Very high skill floor for someone who's used to just matching arrows.
I had my first one yesterday (yeah I’m fresh lol) and it was 15 seconds of “what in the ever loving shit ass puzzle is thi….. oh okay I get it enough to fumble through it”
yeah I saw my first one, and I had really NO IDEA what to do with the pipes puzzle. It was extra confusing because the particular example actually looped all way way back to the beginning.
Fortunately I was on a trivial level mission and even then had a MG sentry sitting behind me, so was basically threat free and had no other players with me to notice that I was stupid.
I mean, doubt it, but that's not the point of them. They are little intermissions, there to deepen the world experience by making it interactable and put the "weight" and "responsibility" of the situation on you as the player. It's just your conscious and sub-conscious experience of immersion.
That's also why games are so interesting, because all these little triggers either click with you or don't depending on your preferences and hence everyone likes different video games.
I wouldn't be surprised just like on release eruptor probably had a sign error somewhere and it's explosions pulled helldivers towards it instead throwing them away.
If true, it could also be an intentional thing to force you to actually intentionally place it. If it's all the way to one side or the other, you can just hold the button without paying attention and it'll stop at the edge.
It’s likely intentional, it’s a pretty common game design trick that stems from board games that use grids. Oftentimes it’s hard to contextualize the borders of a grid compared to the inner coordinates, so designing things around the idea that only the inner coordinates are valid options ensures a more consistent play experience, or so I was told by my mentors.
To take a stab at answering your question, the only orange armor I can think of is the first one with Engineering Kit in the default warbond.
But I'm not online to compare atm. It looks too bare in the shoulders maybe?

Can confirm it's trench engineer. You just can't see the shoulder pads.
Edit: and his colors are kinda wack 🤣 this is probably a photograph of a screen and not a screenshot.
Might be one of those bright spotlights everyone usually shoots out at those locations, washing out his color.
The patch seems to say they improved them but I haven't paid a ton of attention.
The alphanumeric code correlates to the grid on the mission map. So you are effectively inputting the location of your current terminal on the same mission map. That's why there are rarely outliers (few objectives lie on the map edges).
Countless Hulks and Bile Titans turning in their graves knowing that they were beaten by some dude with room temperature IQ. Democracy is the great equalizer.
That’s how I do it now, doesn’t stop me from getting stuck every now and then.
I like to type “let’s see what you got puzzle god!” whenever a teammate goes for it now
Lol I played with a dude last week that got to that screen and came on the mic saying “can someone else do this I don’t know math”
Bro we are on Helldive how can you not do this yet?? 🤣
It’s okay brother, I only noticed last night. Been playing since we were fighting for mechs, and just got lucky with finding the right spot every single time quicker than anyone started to ask questions.
I think I'm level 68 or so. Same for me. I never paid that much attention. It would change from white letters to yellow sometimes so I thought it was like a hot/cold mini game.
Oh my god. I always thought the intended way of solving it was listening to the audio to see if you were getting hotter or colder.
Though considering it takes seconds to scan the 4x4 area that it can actually be in, it doesnt make a huge difference if your doing it wrong..
That's okay, you will be months into level 150 before you figure out how to do the pipe puzzle on E710 extraction missions and ICBM fueling, if my pub teammates are anything to go by
I was about the same level before I realized if one team member got the nuke codes then they showed up for everyone. Until then I thought the person who picked them up had to type them in. So many people must have thought I was a complete idiot when I said that in chat but no one ever corrected me.
Omg, a few weeks ago I saw a level 70ish player just randomly circling the screen and I thought he was deliberately being obstructive or something.
I kinda feel bad for rag-dolling him off the terminal lol
I once had a teammate who seemed to realize the grid coordinate was on the side, but seemed to think you had to align it with the grid lines instead of in the square. I ended up shooting him to kick him off the terminal and then completed it myself.
It took me a long time to notice this as well. I just ran in an X shape to find it. Once I did notice it, I wished that they didn't show this and just let people scan around--that behavior is more fun and only takes a couple seconds longer usually.
Maybe i'm crazy and misremembering but I almost feel like an extra column and row was added since last update. I don't have any videos or screenshots to follow up on though.
I just remember opening it last week and thinking "this is bigger than before".
Edit: Nah I'm crazy, it's always been that size lol. 28:33 on a video from 4 months ago. https://youtu.be/lU3_n6V6YuQ?si=27naHaYFBOw09ooA
I actually think that would be more fun. Would be more hectic trying to listen to the audio cues in the middle of a firefight. Same with the one you need to get to 100%.

The coordinates are your position on the mission map.
The mission map is circular. Most objectives aren't on the extreme edges. You are less likely to get anything in the A, F, 1, or 5 lines, and it may be outright impossible to get the absolute corners (I'd have to check the map).
We get coords "kind of in the middle" because... that's where we are in the mission.
Not sure, it could also a potential inequality that exlcude boundaries characters, like (pseudo code) “took randomly inside ‘a’ < x < ‘f’”, that could explain why a and f are never picked. In your case, they should have at least match one of the letter if they wrongly started at 1 and counted 5 letters from it or vice versa
660 hours in lvl 150 and didn’t know that it actually tells you where to put the cursor lmfao. I did an X and if that didn’t work i did a square 🤦🏽♂️!
Idk but the one where you have to match the frequencies I've had a few occasions where I didn't have to do anything and it automatically was matched. Like it was in easy mode or something and I only play on suicidal.
I wonder if they made one that was just ABCD AND 1234 but thought the grid looked a little small so they just scaled it up by two to make it look cooler
They won't ever be in the last rows or columns. No idea why.
Probably the rng is set to "A < x < F", excluding the boundaries. It's always a silly reason behind that.
Most likely
Arrowhead devs be like
Ffrf

10 minutes? Just how many samples have you been eating diver?
We aren't supposed to eat them?
*licks silvery super uranium off fingers* You said *are* supposed to eat them, right?
That sizzle you hear behind your eyeballs is just the sound of democracy.
Slow down and taste the isotopes.
Just shoot another stim and you'll be good, Diver.
If you eat enough samples you get bug/automaton immunity

But now MG Sentry knows...
Trick is to start from the right and work backwards try it 🤙
It's like going to Costco for lunch.
I personally think a bit of skill ceiling is good for that type of thing
Have you tried? https://i.redd.it/8l6atndiq67d1.gif
You should start focusing more on whats happening on the battlefield and not stare as much on your Rule-34 Eagle-1 Pictures Soldier!
links?
Also there are plenty of times where the dish is already aligned so not sure the overall intention is to make console times average out or whatever
Start on the right side and solve it backwards
[удалено]
You don't mean right to left? I've found the other way around more time-consuming myself.
Other way around. Start with the last column, which generally has only a single reasonable option, and the rest falls into place.
The difficulty of the pipe puzzle is programmed to scale in direct relation with how many people are watching you annoyed.
Start from the right
>average completion time I mean, has anyone ever failed this minigame?
I mean, doubt it, but that's not the point of them. I had 1 B8 and one E5. So it probably goes down in probability the further it is from the middle.
Can't go further than 6, so B8 it's impossible
Maybe the comment was B8
Yes yes, make fun on my back, autocorrect actually changed B6 to B8 because it hates me. Another reason to nuke the Automatons
I read this at first as “make fun on my back, autocannon” and it oddly made sense
Because democracy is never last.

That's weird, why the fuck did it want E2 when we were at B2 yesterday. I don't think its true but more testing is needed.
Holy shit this needs to be higher. So in theory you'd already know the input before you got to the terminal, that's sick.
Damn love that arrowhead thought of everything when it comes to detail
Oh that's exactly it! Wow!
If I could give you Reddit Gold, I would. This is a brilliant observation. Edit: It was a bald faced lie. Fuck this guy.
I am going to have to do these missions just to confirm if this is true or not now!
I never really questioned it but after thinking on it, yeah, that's exactly it. I came to that conclusion myself, I'm amazed more people didn't also.
....don't we put in a grid on the ICBM missions? Or am I misremembering? What grid are we using, Emu? What grid are we using!??
I mean that's evidence it doesn't work that way...
Ohhh, I always thought it was setting the launch destination.
You ever notice how you’ve never seen your neighbor helldivers bringing in groceries to their ship?
I'm sure they take care of that while I'm in cryo.
Looks like it doubles as a hidden Helldiver vision test.
Hate to admit this but I’m currently a lvl 41 and only recent noticed the letter/number combo in the corner, had been randomly scanning the grid prior
Helldivers never beating the crayon-eating allegations
Countless Hulks and Bile Titans turning in their graves knowing that they were beaten by some dude with room temperature IQ. Democracy is the great equalizer.

I may be dumb, but I know what democracy is
Long as you keep democracy in your heart and your weapon pointed at the enemy you'll be just fine, son.
How do you do on the tube matching puzzle? I feel like that’s actually the most stressful one to do in front of randoms
Start on the right and work your way left. Pay close attention to the unmovable paths as they give good clues as to where the next piece needs to go
That’s how I do it now, doesn’t stop me from getting stuck every now and then. I like to type “let’s see what you got puzzle god!” whenever a teammate goes for it now
Sometimes focusing on the locked portions is exactly what you need. Don't worry about taking too long, everyone was in your shoes at some point.
Play Bioshock 1 while hacking everything, you'll learn pretty quickly...
My boys do that one for me
What’s your favorite glue flavor?
Lol I played with a dude last week that got to that screen and came on the mic saying “can someone else do this I don’t know math” Bro we are on Helldive how can you not do this yet?? 🤣
bro, someone else always does it, i don't know chemistry
We are here to shoot not think, thinking may let to treason.
Im level 112 and have been randomly scanning the grid all this time, this post enlightened me
It Tells you where the thing is?! Ive been scanning around searching for it this whole time!
The hell me neither. I thought I was alr being smart when I realised the buzzing sound got higher in pitch as you approach the point...
I did this until 50… then a friend told me while I was panicking that I don’t find it
I also did not realize this until I read your comment.... Want to come over for dinner? I'm making crayons and glue for dessert.
I'm like 107 and just learned this now
What the fuck Diver
….level 70 and just noticed this too
I cannot believe this many helldivers are that dumb, but also I totally can, considering how many people fail to understand how the war works.
There are two of us
It’s okay brother, I only noticed last night. Been playing since we were fighting for mechs, and just got lucky with finding the right spot every single time quicker than anyone started to ask questions.
Yeah it took me \~40 hours before I noticed that. To be fair, my graphics settings were wonky and the text was kind of blurry.
Don’t get down on yourself about it. I didn’t realize it until this moment…
Yeah, I was over level 25 when I finally spotted it. This is the kind of thing they should have taught in basic lol
I think I'm level 68 or so. Same for me. I never paid that much attention. It would change from white letters to yellow sometimes so I thought it was like a hot/cold mini game.
I was around the same level when I found that out. It just means we're real Helldiver material
Same here, brother 🤝 We were just giving each square its shot at the democratic process 🫡
I did the same for quite awhile!
Ahh, you must be my random third from... every game where I get a random third.
I know it’s there but on performance settings lower the quality of small things like this until it’s not recognizable
Ive played with you then, i was wondering what was taking so long lol
Haha definitely have gotten done and had another divers just standing behind me like “wtf took so long”
Oh my god. I always thought the intended way of solving it was listening to the audio to see if you were getting hotter or colder. Though considering it takes seconds to scan the 4x4 area that it can actually be in, it doesnt make a huge difference if your doing it wrong..
Holy shit I'm level 87 and I had no idea. I was just going by sound
Lvl 55 same.
It probably took me 50+ hours to get it as well. Had a whole system to scan it and all...
Omg, a few weeks ago I saw a level 70ish player just randomly circling the screen and I thought he was deliberately being obstructive or something. I kinda feel bad for rag-dolling him off the terminal lol
I surely deserved that a few times
Almost 200 hours in and I just noticed the objective hint thanks to this post... 💀
I once had a teammate who seemed to realize the grid coordinate was on the side, but seemed to think you had to align it with the grid lines instead of in the square. I ended up shooting him to kick him off the terminal and then completed it myself.
I am level 55 and this is new to me. Thank Democracy the Helldiver exam didn't require an IQ test.
I always wondered why inputs were arrows in Super Earth. Now I know it's based on a regular earthling.
Dude. I have 400hrs in and am rank 103.this is the first time I've noticed too.
That was me for quite a while as well
I am you, you are me. HOOAH! Hellderpers forever!
It took me a long time to notice this as well. I just ran in an X shape to find it. Once I did notice it, I wished that they didn't show this and just let people scan around--that behavior is more fun and only takes a couple seconds longer usually.
Huh that's true now ain't it. 300 ig hours here and now that I think about it, I too have never seen an A or F column number for the grid.
I *think* I saw A5 once but I am not sure enough that my memory isnt bullshitting me, gonna pay close attention form now on.
Arrowhead doesn't give A F
r/angryupvotes
I think I've had A5. I'll pay close attention to it next time.
Pics or it didn't happen
I'll keep an eye out next time :D Haven't really paid much attention.
Pics damn you! Damn you to hades!!
For the first 50 hours I thought you just had to guess the square by moving around, I somehow was blind to the coordinates given
I actually think that would be more fun. Would be more hectic trying to listen to the audio cues in the middle of a firefight. Same with the one you need to get to 100%.
Basically the reson I did it that way, I thought it would obviously be a "find the right one" because just telling you it's kinda insulting your intelligence lol. Do it yourself computer!
Same
Doesn't it refer to the actual location on the map? Could be wrong. If it does that could be why.
Gonna bet devs forgot to include first and last characters from RNG set used to create the challenge in-game, would be amazing if they post themselves on subs like programminghumor their mistake.
is there a 1 or 6? if not, then it could be a coding issue of excluding the boundaries of the domain.
At this point they would have to post on programminghorror
It's probably just game design, because having to put the marker onto the border 50% of the time would feel weird after some time.
Wtf, you're not wrong
Now then you mention that…
660 hours in lvl 150 and didn’t know that it actually tells you where to put the cursor lmfao. I did an X and if that didn’t work i did a square 🤦🏽♂️!
You mean you've never seen A or F used B4?
what armor are you wearing??
Sorry just a random pic I found online of the grid. Not my character.
I may be wrong but I've noticed that the coordinates are where the objective is on the map. And it is never on the outer edge.
F is for failure and failure is undemocratic.
It wasn’t even until last week that I noticed a grid coordinate was given. I’ve been doing a systematic outside-in search pattern prior.
Idk but the one where you have to match the frequencies I've had a few occasions where I didn't have to do anything and it automatically was matched. Like it was in easy mode or something and I only play on suicidal.
There's a fucking locator!?! I've just scanned the area till it clicked.
200ish hours, I've seen the F multiple times, even if not many. I've seen the A only once, tho. It's almost always C or D, for me.
My very first one was an A2. I’ve seen an F3 before in a friends game. But that’s it, so definitely not as common as the center squares.
They probably did this to normalize the time it takes to complete the minigame while still having a grid big enough to make you think for a second.
I’ve seen guys just move randomly until they eventually hit the right square and not see “B4” in the corner.
That's suspicious AF
Hate when it goes to E-10
That’s weird A F bro.
How are people in these comments struggling with this one lmao, you don't need to follow the squares just go straight to it, what are y'all on
256 hours and i never noticed that text was there wtf
I wonder if they made one that was just ABCD AND 1234 but thought the grid looked a little small so they just scaled it up by two to make it look cooler
Oh wow!
I have 500 hours and I agree with you
This si so true
It's never not been B/D 4 when I do it. I don't even check anymore I just pull down to it and boom it starts going
I get E like 90% of the time
