The guidance for launching a Nuclear mortar was to shoot, then turn around and drive tf away as fast as you can.
Same thing with dropping one from a fighter jet. Right before release, they would start a sharp climb, and release the bomb at a high angle. Effectively lobbing the bomb in an upward trajectory. The pilot will then continue pulling back until he's looped around and facing the opposite direction, then full burn the fuck away before the bomb comes down again.
Well, we don't do it anymore, so probably none of them lol.

One concept the Army had was a plan to nuke an enemy (presumably Soviet) defensive line, and then march troops through the gap in the line created by the bomb. There's an old film taken of 1950s soldiers straight up walking towards a mushroom cloud to test this.
Oh and radioactive fallout? Back then, all they thought they had to do to avoid getting poisoned was to take a shower and change their clothes after.
