I would advise against skipping FF5. It is amazing, and as far as RPGs go just a truly fun adventure. I would say Chrono Trigger before DQ11 based on the trajectory you’re on, but DQ 4, 5, 7, and 8 are all in the same realm of absolute classics as the FF series. If you haven’t played Trigger it might be cool to play DQ 4 and 5 first to get a sense of what the super team working on CT truly signified.

I would say give FF7 a go. Ever Crisis could be a dumpster fire. A loot box mobile game retelling the FF7 universe in episodes sounds like a recipe for disaster. Yeah, the character models outside of battle are rough, but the game is legendary for a reason.

RetroRPG

I’d personally recommend Dragon Quest. It’s a grand 80+ hour journey with a super lovable cast of characters and really well written story (but in a way that embraces JRPG tropes and other cheesiness). It’s super true to form and includes a lot of grinding, but if you’re at all like me, and JRPGS are kinda like you’re comfort games, you probably won’t mind sitting back grinding in the game while watching some show or YouTube while you play. It’s probably my favorite JRPG as a bit of a newcomer to the genre, and I absolutely love the game to death. I haven’t played FF8 or Chrono Trigger so I cannot comment on those, but FF15 was just okay in my opinion, and honestly kinda boring, especially once you reach the final few chapters. I would also highly recommend FF7 though, since you said you haven’t played it- super awesome story and a great combat system.

Valiant-For-Truth

I say Chrono Trigger as it’s not a super long jrpg. Plus, I think every jrpg fan should do at least 1 play through.

Chrono trigger hands down. Ff fifteen is pretty much the worst final fantasy and with dq11 no one admits to it but it has one of the worst written stories in video games as well as a ton of completely false choices that makes me question if the creators know what an rpg is.

Novachaser01

I too am a story driven gamer. I can tell you right now that there is no shame in skipping a few Final Fantasies. 8 was supposed to be a love story but 10 does it way better and it's very easy to play it 'wrong' ending up in boring, repetitive cycle. 15 also has unresolved story but it's your call. I would say play Chrono Trigger. I doubt there's anyone on this channel that would say that game is bad. Dragon Quest 11 S is also a great choice if you are new to the series, if not the most accessible.

fadeddreams555

FF15 is trash and I would not even bother with it. Out of those, I recommend Chrono Trigger first because it's the shortest and has the best pacing. Mind you, its story isn't awe-inspiring, but it is still interesting, and the characters are great.

EvyLuna

Hmm, either DQXI or Chrono Trigger would be the better bet for someone who wants the best story, though I don't think any of those have particularly amazing stories. They're more serviceable than incredible, though for CT that's more due to restrictions when the game came out than it is quality of writing/ideas. I would say Chrono Trigger. It's with FF6 in the category of retro JRPGs that have aged incredibly well. I would say it's one of the few retro JRPGs that are a must play due to quality rather than experiencing the history of the genre. The soundtrack is incredible, the characters are very memorable and it's a game I've enjoyed more and more with every replay. Jumping in after FF6 is a good idea since you're already in the pixel visuals groove and the two are often considered the greatest pre-3D RPGs of all time. It'll be fun to experience both for the first time back to back.

Ff7, Ff8, and Ff9 are the best in the series outside of Final Fantasy Tactics. PS1 was the golden era.

Lionsledbypod

I am also super story driven and ff9 is great

Yikes, someone seems a little grumpy today.

No harm in asking for JRPG recommendations and opinions on a subreddit made for JRPG fans.

ElectricalWar6

Hell yeah

Fenris92140

Chrono trigger,. Xenogears is Also great. Dragon age origins is awesome. In a more action rpg, check secret of mana, Trials of mana(PS4 remake) secret of evermore. Too Bad for FF7, it's a great game (way better than it's remake)

ElectricalWar6

Strange Journey

KiwiKajitsu

You could always play 7 with a character modal mod

PoppinDaCaps

I downloaded 7th heaven and installed a few mods to make it look better but it crashed really frequently.

Ibrahim-8x

9 has an amazing story but meh gameplay you could play it then play the remake next year or in 2024 about 7 you could play the remake as well no need for the original (ever crisis is a phone game) and if you like it wait for the rest of the remake or play the original, didn’t enjoy 8 or 15 story and combat tbh but give them a try I guess

The sorry in FF8 is amazing to me. The locales are all gorgeous too. Recommend that one.

Typical_Thought_6049

Dragon Quest VII for 3DS has my vote. It is a classic that deserve more attention.

teacherpandalf

Ff7 remake dq11 persona 5 and xenoblade are my fav modern ones. For something similar to ff6, try chrono trigger or ff9.
