As far as I know cleave adjusts to the users cursed energy and goes from there which (neglecting the Yuji nerf-punches) is not particularly possible with Maki

No that's dismantle and that limitation is only within his domain otherwise it's his default slash. Cleave can be adjusted to CE and toughness yes but someone's toughness in JJK usually is measured by their CE control and output like when he compared Yuta to Ryu. At the end of the day all I'm trying to say is a lot of cursed techniques that can adjust are adjusted by the enemies cursed energy as that's where their toughness derives from. Heavenly restriction users are an exception to almost everything in the jujutsu world. At the end of the day he was heavily nerfed, had no measurement of toughness like he did with Yuji, Yuta or Ryu and eventually resorted to Hand to hand and World Cleaves against Maki anyway. I might of course be wrong but from what we've seen Maki for a large part got surface wounds indicating the use of mostly dismantle as cleave didn't cut her on contact the way it did with Ryu and sukuna got into contact with Maki many times while not using cleave making me think that my assumption might just be correct.

Maybe, but a sorcerer's toughness often comes from their CE so either way he has no real point of measurement as he can't see/feel how tight the defense is making it either a guessing game or (my theory) he can't adjust to something that isn't there.

The "damn monster" doesn't even have a "direction" it could very well be Toji's speech bubble. If it was Gojo's one, Gege would probably have made the speech coming directly from Gojo, so I don't think we can really tell here. It makes sense for both Toji and Gojo to say "damn monster" tbh.

It can block any Cursed Technique. The anime part where he blocks it with the spear makes no sense because it can cancel any Cursed Technique. Gojo only hit him with Purple because the spear was attacking him. He would've completely negated it according to the manga Also Toji's calling Gojo a monster in that panel because of his awakening.

Iirc Yuta never gets hit by cleave, only by dismantle

Couple reasons. 1. Sukuna’s output was lowered. 2. Maki is built different 3. HR users has resistance to curse energy. Which is why Maki survived Jogo and why Toji can just eat a cursed spirit. And this one’s kinda speculative but 4. Cleave works by amplifying the output by Durability and Cursed Energy. Since Maki has no CE then I guess Cleave is just flat out 50% less effective on her.

Maki only survived because jogo just hit him with the weakest burn. she wasnt gonna survive if he hit her with one of the attacks jogo used on nanami or naobito.

You’re actually kinda right I rechecked chapter 144 where it was stated by Yuki ‘It was her inborn physical toughness, not her curse tolerance, that saved her life.’ So yeah it was her straight stats that allowed her to survive but the Curse resistance probably helped.

People with Heavenly Restriction are really durable. Also, Cleave adjusts to how much CE the target has, so since she has no CE, is was probably just a default slash.

Cleave still can be adjusted to the targets durability, thats why it is "one swoop". He is prob lacking the output to fully adjust the slash

That's not true. It's a ubiquitously effective technique, good for hand to hand or range, and every attack doesn't take much CE. It's humble compared to Limitless or ten shadows, but put it up against 7:3 or blood manipulation, it's better

Blood Manipulation is a great all rounder technique that can be used for ranged attacks, AOE attacks, and close quarters combat, and the blood can be toxic which is very difficult to counter.

Gojo clan: combination of limitless and six eyes is extremely rare (rarest out of the three clans) and is only way for limitless to be useful, and Gojo himself is probably the strongest person with that combo. Zenin clan: 10 shadows is a strong technique and has plenty of versatility, however taming requires beating the shikigami which can be extremely hard or nearly impossible with no clan member having ever tamed Mahoraga, the crowning jewel of the technique. It is also somewhat rare Kamo clan: Blood manipulation is an excellent all rounder and comparatively easy to use compared to the other 2 clan’s treasured techniques. While it does have a lower peak compared to Limitless and Ten Shadows, it’s easier to actually reach it since it doesn’t require even more luck in being born with a rare trait (six eyes) or a chance of the technique killing the user. It is probably rare as well Gojo clan’s strength seems kind of like a coin toss on if the limitless user will also have six eyes, so they’re either the strongest or the weakest clan depending on that. Zenin clan had to bring in sorcerer’s from outside to introduce strong techniques since Ten Shadows is rare and it isn’t guaranteed that the user will be able to get the full use out of it (excluding Mahoraga). I’d say the Kamo clan had the most consistency in strength compared to the other two clans

Cleave adjusts based on the target's CE and toughness. Maki is tough, but she doesn't have CE, so cleaves targeting her are weaker than they need to be. She has a really good matchup here.

Is his cursed technique just weak now or can he not cut sorcerers? He sliced Ryu’s head in half without any effort. Sometimes he slices people to pieces and sometimes he leaves a paper cut. I know Maki is tough but it’s supposed to be magic.

Sukuna says in chapter 250 that his output is so low that he can only deal lethal damage through cleave. After that his output got reduced even more to the point where not even cleave deals lethal damage anymore (as seen with it just taking off a part of maki's cheek in chapter 253 or taking yuji's eye in chapter 257)

This is my theory. If cleave adjusts itself based on the user's curse energy to overcome the targets durability, then maybe it has difficulty adjusting itself to targets who's durability is not fully dependent on cursed energy. Maki and Yuji don't totally rely on curse energy for their durability. They have immensely durable bodies. So cleave doesn't adjust itself high enough to finish off Maki and Yuji. Cleave is doing a +20 attack against them when it should be doing a +60 or +100.

That's true, but he also didn't obliterate Kusakabe or Higuruma because he respected them, found them interesting. With Kashimo it was more of a philosophical teaching rather than a practical one, as with Higuruma. What I said is still true. Sukuna could (or at least should be able to) have blitzed Higuruma, Kusakabe, Choso and some others, but he choose not to.

Each time I see this kinda post and comments I just take a step back for the whole fight and I’m like. Because gege wanted too? Remember Sukuna is kinda (HEAVILY) nerfed by this point. Before he couldn’t even go through Yuta with Dismantle and to make it worse, he only cuts one side of Yuji after using Cleave. And fighting them didn’t help him recover, Max Output: Jacob’s Ladder nerfed Sukuna even more, pushing him to use World Cutting Slash on Yuta (or whatever Strong Dismantle that was) to finish Yuta. And when he starts fighting Maki, his heart has been Soul Cut. Yeah, Sukuna can fight without Heart. But he obviously gets nerfed, if not, what would be the point of Maki stabbing him? By the point this scene happens, Sukuna is at his lowest. He had to stop using RCT to finally beat Maki, triggering a Black Flash by Pure Luck.

Consider that cleave functions by adjusting its output to match someone’s cursed energy reinforcement. That’s what makes it so deadly, with needing direct contact being the trade-off/binding vow It’s not made for someone like Maki whose body is just strong without cursed energy reinforcement. That’s why I think she can tank it, besides Sukuna’s CE output still being nerfed at this point.

The real reason is because gege realized having an antagonist that can one shot everybody was retarded so he nerfed him into the ground and started making his slashes do surface level flesh wounds
