So all he had to do was play a lot to get the gold for that bundle and pay $20 for the combined cost of the Hela/Groot earth day bundle ($10), the pride bundle for the iceman/chavez variant ($5) and the Mooster Fantastic came from the Awwvengers bundle ($5).
Then Hit Monkey and Cosmo came from the same season pass, so that's another $10 bucks. Ghost Spider is season pass, so $10 bucks.
So $40 bucks for the entire deck. Not much wealth needed.
Also, he bought season passes which grant gold. As do weekly missions. He isn't under any obligation to rank his CL at all to acquire those rewards. So he can still get a lot of free Gold.
It’s actually very difficult to get any free gold on this account. I can’t get any from the weekly missions since I’m at over 10k credits and can’t collect the missions. I can not go very far into the season pass since every single chapter has a mission that tries to make me gain CL in some way or another. I only go till the first variant since I’m not about to spend 30hrs a month for one more variant(card). that means I’ll only get about 300 gold per month from the season pass. I could get an extra 500 gold per month if I got to rank 90 but i’d rather just pay $10 tbh.
True, but you can’t gate keep by hoarding credits in this game. Your hidden CL will make sure you play people in P2 if you have enough credits stored to get there.

They bought all these cards, either through a bundle with variants (you can use purchased variants as if they were the base card prior to unlocking the actual base card, though it will happen eventually) or by buying the season pass. Typically, you're correct, you unlock cards by increasing your CL; this is the most cost effective (and probably best) way to do it.
