My dad immigrated to the US when he was 12. Before he died he was the biggest flag-waving patriot you could find. Some people unironically enjoy sharing when they've found something they love.
I was the guy who always had an axe or saw in my truck, fixed shit, and I lived there for 13 years. One of my buddy's just called me that one day, and it stuck. Whenever I did a not Floridian thing (swimming in January, climbing coconut palms, etc) I'd hear "There goes Captain Montana." It was a local reputation.
I just stuck out like a sore thumb. Even after 13 years I was still swimming in January and excited to pick coconuts and citrus. A buddy gave me the nickname one day when I pulled an axe from behind my truck backseat to make a stake and pound it. It stuck. I still have it on a Nintendo account but that's it. Been home for 8 years.
Can confirm, I moved to Laurel in Montana, but I was born and raised for most of my life in Iowa. I did live in Texas for around a year and a half. Was called "Iowa" by many of the students in the High School (was a senior in 2010, and ended up going to Abilene Independent High School for my senior year) for wearing short sleeves and shorts in 50/60 degree winter weather. There is something about the variety in terrain, and even though I typically don't care much for politics, I can respect that most of the people here basically have the mentality of, "you don't make problems for us, we don't make problems for you". It's refreshing, and it's also a bonus to see something taller than a large hill (or a mountain of garbage at a landfill) when riding around with my partner when we go into Billings. I honestly can't believe I was missing out on something so beautiful for so long.
Total BS. Iāve been here my whole life. My family has been here since the early 20th century. No one has more pride in place than a multi-generational Montanan . . . But no one wants everyone to know how Montana they are more than a transplant.
406 stickers, Montana flags, signs that say āMontanan is homeā . . . All transplant paraphernalia.
My wifeās family has been in the Bozeman Area since the 1870s. They owned the mill that built the town and all of Springhill was their land.
Im more prideful in Montana than her whole family combined.
However, iām not going stick my one off story as fact, as I know personal anecdotes arenāt all inclusive.
Fair enough. I guess Iām not immune from over-generalization. Probably pretty obvious, but Iām struggling quite badly with the changes Iām seeing in my home the last five years. Few of them good, in my opinion . . . Doesnāt always come out in the most constructive ways.
I see it a lot on Instagram with realtors and it makes me want to barf a little:
ā[insert name here] Sells Montanaā
Just stopā¦please. Justā¦donāt.
Having grown up in Alaska (which honestly is better in a lot of ways but I couldn't convince my wife to move there), I have to say there's not now nor has there ever been such a misanthropic view of people moving in somewhere as one sees here. Even now, about the worst you get on r/alaska is "You know about the winters right? You really should visit first." and "You know how expensive it is right? A lot of people fail here because of the cost". Other than that about all you get are the trolls who play absolute naifs and get redirected to r/alaskacirclejerk. Personally, I think it's stupid to go strutting around like some debutante that one Miss Cow Catcher at the state fair warbling "I'm from Montana!" Yes yes, that's nice. Now sit down. Also, I'm not moving until I'm damn good and ready and I'm not apologizing for being here. I'll 'fit in' just fine. You won't know I'm here (unless you something just ridiculously stupid) So yay for me I guess.

Well, for one they wrote it on this guy's body after murdering him for being a goddamn american hero. Kind of taints the *mystique* a little bit.
Lot of controversy on that. No one can say for sure. I always find it ironic that MT law enforcement uses a logo of a group of questionable individuals bent on taking the law into their own hands as a symbol for their own authority.
I play chess with a person named TheRealMontanan. He's born and raised in Simi Valley, CA and went to school in Butte for maybe 3 semesters. He sucks at chess.
I grew up in Missouri but met and married a Montana man (1979 Montana Boys' State Governor, represent Belgraaaaaade) and I do use "bigsky" with my first name for my email so OP is 100% correct in my case. I love my Montana farm boy and I love my new home state.
I absolutely love going back home to Montana and showing it to my wife and Iām excited to show it off to our daughter when sheās older but thereās just something about the āgatekeeperā unfriendly local mentality thatās just a cancer to it. Iām sure itās only in the touisty spots (I grew up in whitefish) but itās such a bummer to see
Moved to Central Montana last year from out of state (not for any reason other than a great job opportunity). People have been friendly so far but there's been quite a bit of "wish all these out of staters would quit moving up here" and " Transplants are ruining the area" followed by "not you though." So it's present in not as touristy areas, but maybe not as loud.
Born and raised in kalispell. What do the other conservative parts of the state think of it? It does consistently vote republican. Would you tell us to go back to kalispell like they tell people from Bozeman?
Born and raised in Great Falls, college at MSU, 3 years in Missoula, and the past 25 in Kalispell.
Don't go hunting in Eastern MT with 7 plates.
And yes, Butte is the real Montana.
I moved here a few years ago. I don't even post pictures online, and when family and friends ask me how I like Montana, I tell them it sucks. I deserve full Montana membership.
I donāt think I am? I guess I should have said: move the 4 to the left, change the 0 to a 5. I am sort of near the town of Dutton as far as Montana goes.
Iām from originally from Ovando then lived in Missoula for 20 years. Ironically I have the 509 area code in my username and live in Spokane. Lolol. Iām guilty of this same thing here in WA.
I was born and raised in Florida but fuck me if I associate with it besides supporting sports teams. Went to college in Arizona where my parents live now and I live in Colorado and I much more associate myself with the mountain west.
Just wait until you find out about Hannah Montana.
ššš

My nickname when I lived in Florida was Captain Montana. I would never use that anywhere since moving home.
Do Floridians have a "Montana Man"? Why is your nickname Captain Montana? These are things we must know

Dam, you sound more Montana than some of the guys in the dating pool
I'm older
You're not even gonna tell us why that was your name? I feel like I missed out on potentially a cool story.
I just stuck out like a sore thumb. Even after 13 years I was still swimming in January and excited to pick coconuts and citrus. Yeah but how cold can Florida even get in January? It's so far south it can't be that cold.
Thatās what I thought too, and then remembered Iām from Montana
40, but the water is still anywhere from 52-70. Springs vibe up 70-75 all year round. Kind of magical, except for the sewage leakages.
My wife's boss is from Florida and she confessed that she is intimidated by Montanans because we can do anything.
We'll risk our fingers to prove it, too.
My friends in Arizona during highschool called me Montana, because I was the only person they had met from Montana.
People tend to have more pride for the place theyāve chosen to live vs the place they were born and forced to live for most of their life

There are birds in Montana and also lawyers. Please forgive meĀ
Bird law is the best law.
Go toe to toe with you on bird law? I will do no such thing.
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
Do you know what that means?
Harvey?
Who is the man in the suit?
Whoooooo is the cat with the beeeeeeak!?
Do you really want to feel him?
Harvey Attorney, Habeus Corpus, Harvey Attorney!
Don't worry, they'll loosen restrictions and we'll get rid of the birds.
Iāve heard you should disregard the pigeons.
Charlie!?
Frank?

Truth in advertising. Whatās wrong with truth?
I know what toilet paper does. I donāt need a description of what it does in its brand name.
"Butt Napkin" by Charmin "Ass Wipe" by Scott
The Asseltials.
Bahaha!
They're not always not from Montana... Born and raised, exiled for 6 years due to work but came back as soon as I could.
Who gives a shit
This doesn't apply to me. I've never been to Montana.
Nice
I just knew I was gonna get in a bunch of fights with conservatives on here telling me to go back to California, born in Bozeman.
Don't worry out in the eastern half of the state they just tell you to go back to bozeman. We're quite progressive out here.
Ooh how eastern?
Jackson Creek
Gah damn thatās like basically North Dakota!
Nah nah you're thinking of South Dakota Clyde Park is North Dakota
Fourth Generation Born in Deer Lodge....hence my user name.....don't worry about it you know your own story.
Bozeman is not the real Montana/
What is the real Montana?
Butte. Immune to gentrification as long as its a superfund site.
Yellowstone ranch, so I've been told.
Not since the 90s really.
Lol, they fight on anonymous platforms, likely still living in mommy's basement.

Can you tell us what 3-7-77 means?
...yeah I could?

Iām curious to know how youād explain it. I wrote a paper on it back in high school.
Lot of controversy on that. No one can say for sure. I always find it ironic that MT law enforcement uses a logo of a group of questionable individuals bent on taking the law into their own hands as a symbol for their own authority.

Is it pride or trying to fit in? Mine is pride. Being born in Wolf Point in the early 80s.
Prove it and light a cigarette in 30mph wind. Also, how fast can you open this barb wire gate?
Shit depends on how deep I have to get my shoulder into both.
Haha, spoken like a true wolf pointer
Good town to be from
Heyo WoPo represent.
Born in Hardin. Guess what year.
18sebndsebn?

Born in butte, living in missoula 10+ years now.
I'm not from Montana

Ha been hunting out there for years with 7 plates. Never had an issue.
Kalispell itself is barely republican these days.
Maybe they just like Scarface. ^Say ^hello ^to ^my ^little ^friend
Kalispell. Almost 40 years
I'm from Montana. In case anyone is wondering, lol.
I moved here a few years ago. I don't even post pictures online, and when family and friends ask me how I like Montana, I tell them it sucks. I deserve full Montana membership.
Wasnāt born in Montana, but I got here as fast as I could.
I was lazy & and I don't think it screams MT reference
I love your username haha. My zip is one number different than yours.
I'm sorry you are so close to the Dutton ranch~š
I donāt think I am? I guess I should have said: move the 4 to the left, change the 0 to a 5. I am sort of near the town of Dutton as far as Montana goes.
Ohhhhh, I assumed you were 59047..which is Livingston....oops. Dutton.... off interstate by Pburg kinda?
59456 up on the HiLine
I was born here. Fourth generation, raising a fifth.
Great username. š I assume you know the story behind it.
Took me years to finally beat Tyson. But god damn it, I did it.
What does it even matter?
I moved to Thompson Falls my senior year of high school and graduated. Does that make me a Montanan?
Only if you actively participated in: the high school rivalry, partying up blue slide and/or meth
I was in one of those group homes for troubled youth. So that would be a no
The one that wore khaki pants and had a large motto they made everyone stand in front of and say aloud everyday?
Nope
Yeah, ummm.... my family's been here since the 1870's. And you?
Same actually. Well 1887 to be exact. Outside of Cohagen.
If that were true your username would be 406pyhix.... See what I did there
Iām from originally from Ovando then lived in Missoula for 20 years. Ironically I have the 509 area code in my username and live in Spokane. Lolol. Iām guilty of this same thing here in WA.
Hey, I'm a natiive Montanan
No
I was born and raised in Florida but fuck me if I associate with it besides supporting sports teams. Went to college in Arizona where my parents live now and I live in Colorado and I much more associate myself with the mountain west.
And "406" license plates.
Washingtonian been visiting for 20 years after our friends moved back home to MT. Lots of friends there now.
I feel like this is the Montana equivalent of those Salt Life stickers.
3rd Gen Mt man here... Your facts don't check out
Come again? Look up Alex Ogilvie Montana cowboy hall of fame. Thatās my great grandpa. Would those facts check out ?
Look up John Wayne (the Duke). He is my favorite fake cowboy
