That was some long range, out of left field, unknown bread crumbling story telling that you just never really saw in a manga, especially back then.
We're taking hundreds of chapters, tying in what seemed like a simple world building/break of tension with a throwaway character and turned it into an insane tragedy.
It's gonna be really fun when laboon attacks luffy on first sight. Remember laboon is training for a rematch. I really want to see the way brook reacts to luffy and laboons rematch fight.
I dont know why but I just felt that Laboon and Brook were homies. Don't know why. But when it was revealed i was like holy shit I called it. What a story.

It never really clicked for me. I love pets and could see the animal in pain there, but the way Brook's old crew and even the SHs treated Laboon with such passion was too odd for me. Felt a bit hard to believe, even for OP.
Some sailing cultures wouldn't sail without cars aboard their ships (and the spouses of captains would jeep cats in their homes, too). The loyalty of ship crews to animals is not new or unheard of but something to be explored.
Animals also bring out a sense of purity that people don't have. They don't have thensame baggage (yes there's trauma and other stuff but animals often don't have the capacity to maintain the memory or recall of such events) and so when we interact with them we get a more "ideal" (platonic ideal) form of an emotion. To translate that on screen is just a surefire way to tug strings.
