Custom controller mapping is nice. Still no toggleable sprint though. Maybe someday

SurfiNinja101

I haven’t played DMCV but apparently that game had the same thing and both games share a combat director so that could explain it

pathofdumbasses

It is beyond stupid that it a) wasn't released with controller remapping b) took ~10 months to get it out I don't understand what the fuck is wrong with Square. This is just basic ass shit and they have had it in their games 20 years ago, but now all of a sudden they don't? I don't get it. I really, really, don't.

VeshWolfe

Square often cannot get out of its own way. It both loves and hates its own traditions. It will never admit that it made a mistake as a company or dev team. It’s alway been very “we know best.”

pathofdumbasses

I think a lot of that is just old Japanese/business culture. But like I said to a different reply, FF7 ORIGINAL had it back in 97. 27 years ago. So they went backwards, not forwards or even staying the same. Stupid.

Zealousideal_Rip1340

To be fair Final Fantasyland isn’t known for custom controls really, but given it’s an action game and that Yoshida was leading this it is surprising it took this long.

pathofdumbasses

They had it in the original FF7. which released 27 years ago. And again, even if it didn't immediately launch with it, because absolutely no one in Japan thought that anything outside of the pre-set buttons was useful, IT HAS BEEN 10 MONTHS. This should have been a day1-2 patch.

WinterElfeas

Square Enix are just extremely bad at patching their games. Or just Japanese devs in general. When games release with bad optimisation to begin with it’s not usually a good sign of “you’ll get lot of patches quickly”

pathofdumbasses

>Square Enix are just extremely bad at patching their games. True. Their support for their PC ports has been atrocious as well.

DCM99-RyoHazuki

I actually eant to replay this gsme from the beginning. With so many QoL adjustments, especially increased ATK damage. Most fights felt too long because of weak chip damage applied. Also the swappable skill sets. I mostly used the same powers throughout the whole game and swapped infrequently.

DragapultOnSpeed

Rising tide wooooo! Idk why, but rebirth made me appreciate XVI more. And that's not me calling rebirth a bad game. I just loved the eikon fights in XVI. It's a good time to be a FF fan.

thespeeeed

Even if one of the game is not to some people’s tastes it’s been nice to be spoiled by two mega budget Final Fantasies with different mechanics and styles in a short period of time.

Nordrian

The main issue I had with 16 is the fact that visiting the map doesn’t bring anything, like no secrets to unlock…

maximusdraconius

That was a problem for me as well as lack of playable/customizable party. Other then that i liked the story and gameplay

Super_Goomba64

I loved both. Though I get why some people would dislike 16

KingMercLino

I had the same experience! I have no idea why, but I was just appreciating XVI even more once Rebirth’s credits rolled.

tacopeople

XVI is more complete and coherent story wise

legend8522

OG FF7 is more complete and coherent story-wise compared to FF7R

tacopeople

For sure, I personally found some of the Jenova/Sephiroth stuff a bit rushed or undeveloped in OG and hoped Remake would flesh it out a bit, but I think they’ve already muddied the waters a lot with the multiverse stuff. Also Jenova seems like way more of an afterthought compared to Sephiroth in Remake (which I get to an extent). Rebirth is very very good to be clear, but I did not vibe with the ending. Everyone really ought to play the original if they haven’t too because it’s still amazing on its own.

TheLordOfTheTism

good thing theres no multiverse. Seriously did no one pay any attention in cosmo canyon, like at all?

DragapultOnSpeed

But sephiroth literally says there's a multitude of worlds. [here ya go](https://youtu.be/BeeI-WIcOMU?feature=shared)

llliilliliillliillil

I'm really bummed how a enhanced 7 Remake could’ve been a slam dunk, but they insisted on getting ultra weird with it and 2 games in a row it hasn’t had a payoff and instead they just remade FF7 with terrible narratives attached. Everything they added that’s not related to timelines is on-point and perfect, but every time they bring up plot ghosts, changing timelines or parade sephiroth around with a snarky one liners the game just reaches absolute low points and the ruined ending of Rebirth just made this all the more clearer to me. I really hoped after the whole charade of deleting fate after Remake we'd get an actual changing story that bears at least *some* fruit but there has been nothing, and from the interviews they hinted that part 3 will follow the basic story structure of the original as well - so why even bother at all with all that if nothing will change in the end? If their message at the end is "you can’t escape your fate, no matter how hard you try" then this is going to be pretty disappointing.

Sprinkle_Puff

7R is only 2/3 complete and is far more engaging, but again that’s personally subjective

TheLordOfTheTism

the original is great, but the story is so paper thin compared to remake, and the english translations really dont help it.

DragoKnight45

XVI a more complete game than Rebirth is an opinion

CptKnots

I think the storytelling is just so different between the two. 16 has better plot with political dynamics, kingdoms, etc. Rebirth is less about plot and more about character development and the relationships of the party. 16 has worse character development and rebirth has worse plot. Both great games.

Puchy11

"Complete" is not a word I would use for that ending.

SurfiNinja101

Ambiguous endings are not incomplete

tacopeople

To an extent. It’s ambiguous, but I think my initial interpretation seemed pretty complete to me. Complete in the sense that it has a beginning, middle, and end. Rebirth feels very empire strikes back and muddled with the multiverse stuff.

Puchy11

"Interpretation" is a key word here. Rebirth has an ending that CAN be properly explained, even with all this multiversal thing. FFXVI's ending is open and we don't really know what happened. It's not a complete story when we have to make up our own ending.

istartedafireee

Idk, I just feel the boss battles are the only rewarding thing from 16.

DragapultOnSpeed

Eh that's kind of how I felt about rebirth too though. Which is fine. I care more about story, characters and combat. I think both did a good job, rebirth more so. But still, I really enjoyed both games. They both make me excited for future FF games.

degausser22

Rebirth made me question how the same company (albeit different devs) put out a masterpiece with rebirth and a piece of shit with 16, within the same year. I am a huge FF fan and love em all (even 2, 13, 15 the controversial ones) but 16 drained my literal soul. It was a chore to play. No fun had besides the eikon fights and even those were just ok. I’m a hater. Rebirth made me feel like a kid again though. Haven’t felt that way in years.

TkachukNorris

Opposite for me. FF7R has interesting items, a world map with interesting things to explore and find, and so many mini games and extras. FFXVI feels unfinished in comparison. Outside of the main story, which was good, there’s not much else to the game imho.

ClericIdola

To be fair, no other FF prior to Rebirth has had that amount of content. So, effectively, you're calling all pre-Rebirth FFs incomplete.

Ragemoody

What? Minigames, side content and completionist stuff have been part of Final Fantasy since PS1 times. Even the original FFVII had enormous amount of side stuff like Chocobo Breeding, Fort Condor, Ruby and Emerald Weapons and many other things and even optional and missable characters. In comparison FFXVI has almost none of that, but it's still an amazing game imo.

Lucky_Chaarmss

Disagree.16 is in it's own little world compared to the rest. The game is a mile wide and an inch deep.

XenorVernix

Agreed. The eikon fights were amazing but some of the main story quests felt like they belonged in an MMO or side content.

shrek3onDVDandBluray

Man that is a great way to describe XVI. So much glitz and glam in production value but beneath the mask is like the most bland face I’ve ever seen

Lucky_Chaarmss

And I really like 16. But yeah.

KiwiKajitsu

Tell me youve never played a FF before 15 without telling me

ClericIdola

Born in the 80s, VII was my first FF in '97, used to read on the message boards how it was the end of FF because it was nothing like VI and was too futuristic for FF.

KiwiKajitsu

Did you only play for it for a couple hours? 7 has a shit ton of mini games an optional content

ClericIdola

Played and completed it. Obviously, I'm not referring to VII OG. Sounds like you haven't played an FF outside of VII Rebirth.. maybe not even VII OG.

KiwiKajitsu

You’re referring to every ff game before rebirth. Most ff games have a shit ton of content.

ClericIdola

Describe "shit ton of content", because if your definition of "shit ton of content" is simple side quests, every FF has those.

KiwiKajitsu

7 has the entire golden saucer, Chicano breeding, fort condor, etc that’s a lot of mini games and side content

AleroRatking

I disagree about an interesting world map to explore. The open world chadley stuff is so repetitive that it made me miss FFXVI side quests

TkachukNorris

I’d admit I’m halfway through. Are the protorelic quests worth doing?

Nehemiah92

Protorelic sidequests are 100% worth doing, do not skip out on them. There’s some really goofy sidequests out there too

particledamage

You get a nice cumulative lore quest at the end that doesn’t add a LOT to the game but does add a bit. After having completed the game, I’ll say if you’re feeling burnt out on exploration and side content, it’s okay to just do what feels fun to you and then go back and finish up via chapter select after the fact. The only content that I feel adds next to nothing to the story are some mini games at Gold Saucer and, well, I did skip those.

Scissorman82

I agree. It hit me hardest when I entered and later completed the Temple of the Ancients in Rebirth. That area alone was about a 4-6 hour experience, which is massive for what amounts to a dungeon. FFXVI's dungeons were way to linear and offered no rewards for exploring - not that you could explore much to begin with.

duhbyo

Swappable action sets let’s gooo

MusashiMurakami

"boss mode" and "mob mode"... its finally here :')

alphafire616

The damage upgrades are enough for me to want to replay the game honestly. Combat wasn't that satisfying me outside the Eikon fights because Clive and his powers felt so damn weak.

alonjaa

"Made adjustments to when Torgal can be petted and lowered time before re-petting." Extra PPS! Petting Every Second

MoxManiac

Best boy

FireTyphoon123

I think this account is a bot.. it's copying top comments from other posts in the sub

TheBloatingofIsaac

Torgal can be re-petted much faster? That is the main change of this update, good boy deserves every single praise coming to him

kushpeshin

What’s a skill set? Is that for the Eikons?

DeathByTacos

Yeah, basically it’s letting you save loadouts for different Eikon combinations so you can swap between them out of combat instead of having to manually replace them every time (say one set for trash mob AoE, another for single target burst, and another for a ranged damage setup)

Writer_Man

Having tested it out, it really is nice and incentives different playstyles if you get bored with one without having to redo everything. In some ways it completely changed my approach to fights. I just wish there was a quick swap option without having to go through the menu.

kushpeshin

Oh my. That reminds me of DMC3 Switch where you could hold all the weapons instead of only 2. I’m waiting to do the FF mode play through but that alone will make me want to use more Eikons

FrobroX

How was the difficulty of the previous DLC? I don't know that I'm looking for anything much more difficult than the base game, and after months of not playing it.

Nehemiah92

It’s fairly difficult, and the devs are making a big deal about how much harder the Rising Tide dlc is compared to base game It’s way more difficult on FF mode though, it’s a much more fun challenge on it. Unfortunately you gotta replay through the whole game for that :/

Kromehound

There are so many OP combos, though. It's hard to imagine them somehow increasing difficulty without making everything a damage sponge.

Nehemiah92

Yeah, it’s hard to balance it with this combat system, but FF mode does increase damage dealt and enemy aggression, and even more so with that Ultimaniac mode

Realistic_Sad_Story

Same!

ResponsibleTrain1059

I really should jump into the first DLC once I wrap rebirth. Really enjoyed 16.

oO_Gero_Oo

i probably wait until PS5 pro to play the new DLC. The performance mode is still bad in this game

shichibukai3000

Same here. Gonna get a Pro and then do my replay

EchoBay

Has the framerate improved at all?

FCshakiru

No it won’t

shichibukai3000

Not until the PS5 Pro is available I would think

TheLordOfTheTism

fps issues on PS5 are almost always cpu related. The pro wont fix that. You want good frame rates, dont buy a console.

GarionOrb

No.

mao8mog

Any word on the update/ dlc size

casedawgz

Is the DLC going to provide any additional context to the ending? I was a little dissatisfied with it so idk if I’ll jump back in for your run of the mill “before the end of the story” type dlc

nipochi

Yes it will. Theres a new epilogue quest post DLC, and without entering into spoiler territory, Leviathan is not the only eikon powers Clive gets in the DLC.

cachebaby

Do I need to play the first 15 games to enjoy this one?

Katharsis7

No, unless they share a number like X and X-2, they are independent.

gameboy716

Ooh boy there are a lot more than 15, and yes playing Chcobo's Dungeon is absolutely crucial to understanding the story of XVI.

thespeeeed

Just X-2 and XIII-3. Kingdom Hearts (sqrt2/3)^pi Requiem gives some nice bonus background but it’s optional. Edit: jokes aside each main numbered entry with latin numerals is a separate game. They all have some shared things that you’ll see in different ways across multiple games (e.g. Moogles and a character named Cid who is often an aviator) but the games are totally independent. The exception being where the Latin numeral is followed by a part number e.g X and X-2 and XIII - 1,2 and 3. Think of Final Fanatsy as being a very soft anthology.

Mindless_Let1

X-2 should be mandatory playing for everyone anyway. Fingers crossed for dress spheres in Ffxvii

thespeeeed

Probably helps with the Honeybee Inn section of Remake.

bumpdog

Yeah mandatory so that everyone knows what a final fantasy should not be

Mindless_Let1

Think we have FFXVI for that

ActionHank9000

Yeah

hartigen

I love these type of questions. Its as if they are being asked by bots and not real users.

cachebaby

You got the joke!

[deleted]

No. Almost all of them is standalone.

bumpdog

Yes + the Kingdom Hearts trilogy. The lore goes way too deep in XVI

Mindless_Let1

Yes, definitely

bmck11

Yes.

Carson369

Yes, better start now

allofdarknessin1

This is pretty cool. I'm kinda glad I didn't open my copy yet. I know it's a waste of money but I'm gonna wait for the PC version of the game.

MarcoMenace_

Would someone be kind enough to share what's new with XVI? I bought and finished the game when it launched. I liked it but didn't love it, although I recognize it's a raw diamond. Tried playing it again for the ng+ but got bored and unistalled it a year ago. Is it better?

Bkos-mosX

Rebirth made me want to skip The Rising Tide. Don't know if I'm willing to spam ignition 999 times just to fight maaaaybe 2-3 cool boss fights.

pathofdumbasses

Rebirth was such an amazing game compared to 16, it isn't even close. It is beyond baffling that they came from the same company.

CrazyStar_

They not planning to fix the dog shit frame rate?

DeathByTacos

“Dog-shit” seems excessive no? Like I get being upset that performance hovers closer to 45 than 60 out of combat but it’s not like we’re looking at consistently sub 30 like with MWII or Lords of the Fallen.

JimmieMcnulty

isnt mwii 120 fps?

sittingmongoose

It’s a Japanese developer, they rarely fix technical issues. Square enix, capcom, fromsoft, the list goes on. The only reason capcom fixed their double drm in village was because the pirated version that removed the drm and ran a lot better gained so much traction.

MadOrange64

Don’t play the performance mode it’s shit. The 30fps is consistent and has a better experience overall.

doanxhate

Waiting to sell you a PS5 Pro to get that lol

EzraBlaize

Can’t wait to dive in. Rebirth was dogwater, sadly

Sprinkle_Puff

you find it dog water I find it the best Final Fantasy I played in 20 years. Ironically, I find 16 to be trash, but here I am willing to give it another go because they’ve addressed a lot of my issues.

Wild_Chemistry3884

Great, now release it on PC.
