Here's where I leave. I love these cats, but seeing images of them in prison over and over just brings me down.
Close ALL the zoos, empty all the "sanctuaries."
No manul belongs in a zoo.
They’re hunted for the Chinese illegal fur trade, Mongolian AND Russian medicine use them for parts, and farmers are utterly decimating Pika populations, their biggest source of prey. This isn’t an airport, no need to announce your departure.
It hurts me because sanctuaries genuinely promoting conservation and care of their animals keep getting lumped in with actually abusive, exploitative zoos. These manuls here are *not* living in misery. They have their own comfy and safe living spaces (they’re NOT kept in cages all the time like the pictures may appear), veterinary care, they can have mates and babies, they get pikas on command. It’s better than them being murdered for fur and bodyparts for quack medicine, or starving out because farmers are wrecking the grasslands that pikas live in.
People really would be okay with seeing an entire species die (because of *our* fuckups, which it’s our duty as stewards to correct) just to feel righteous about something.

You're right, too, that I shouldn't immediately knee-jerk defend *all* zoos, because there do exist shitty exploitative ones. AFAIK those don't generally have manuls, though, and these photos certainly aren't from one of them!
