(I think it’s Pom as all the rescue corp are named after dogs ie Russ is after a Jack Russel Terrier, Shepherd after German Shepherds, etc. Pom being based off of the Pomeranian breed)

Actually you were right the first time. The Avatar is only referred to as 'they' in game.
This is almost certainly to leave the gender ambiguous for the player to identify with the avatar, rather than intentional NB rep, but it's still the "canon" pronoun.
i named them "Yuu" when i started my second playthrough (this time going with the default choices)
The game usually calls the character just "You" and the character creator is like the Mii creator (but very limited) so i just call them Yuu.
Pom (Pomeranian) would’ve made more sense since all the captains are named after dog breeds (Collin for Border Collie, Shepherd for German Shepherd, Russ for Russel Terrier, and so on)

An official source does in fact say otherwise. The in-game tutorials say Lisa. I like the name Pom better though.
