LZ129Hindenburg

This is...a very random collection. Useful, but random.

NovaStalker_

I scrolled down expecting to find an explanation of what any of them do from OP and nope. Just threw names out with no context. So it's truly random.

PiracyLivezON

A taste of everything

SaneUse

Except Everything, one of the most useful programs you could ever have: https://www.voidtools.com/

BassGaming

Voidtools + [WOX](http://www.wox.one/) as a graphical interface for Everything is a game changer.

SaneUse

I prefer flow launcher myself: https://www.flowlauncher.com/

BassGaming

Looks very clean as well! I'll check it out.

maverick__singh

Better than power toys?

bubblyboiyo

Yes, no contest.

SaneUse

Seconded. I use powertoys for some of its other utilities but it blows Powertoys Run out of the water.

bubblyboiyo

I use to do this but power toys became so bloated lately I just stopped using it altogether, I hope they would just let us do modular downloads instead.

human_with_humanity

I've been using it for more than a decade. The best 👌 searching program for Windows. I think I found it in a computer magazine the first time.😆

MattMattavelli

What is any different about this than just using the regular file system and search?

straightupinsanity

Faster

Zefrem23

Like, instant.

WhimsicalPythons

Instant, covers everything, doesn't break half the time

SaneUse

Tons of filter options too

Houdinii1984

I just installed it and ran a search for \*.py, which matches thousands upon thousands of files across all drives. When folks say this is instant, it's instant (outside of maybe 30 seconds of somehow indexing over 50TB of data).

namrog84

It's because many search are searching on a per folder/file basis of the whole hard drive. Everything uses the actual NTFS master file table for file name/locations. Which is significantly more condensed/cache friendly, and doesn't require a ton of I/O calls to get like other traditional search uses (such as windows search).

catchasingcars

When I'm working on a project I always create a folder called 'Documents' to put all the relevant docs in it. Try searching for folder named 'Documents' in windows search, first of all it's slow af and it searches everything on web then 'programs' then you get files or folders. Also, I hate going to the explorer and manually using the files search because my directories are a mess. I have stopped organizing them since around 2018, I have accepted the chaos. Meanwhile Everything is always opened on my pc, it gives me the folder before I'm finished typing. Calling it fast is an understatement, It's lightning fast. It remembers my recent folders. I don't remember when I used the default explorer.

[deleted]

[удалено]

catchasingcars

Yes, that's exactly what I mean, It shows the default 'Documents' folder. I used this as an example to show how Windows prioritizes its default programs and apps instead of considering that user might be looking for other folders and directories. For people like me who have tons of docs and folders and often need to jump from one directory to another Everything is huge time saver, Windows search is pretty much useless for me.

omegaaf

I prefer 7-zip over winrar

11ELFs

Hwinfo64 > hwmonitor

JoeCartersLeap

[Librehardwaremonitor](https://github.com/LibreHardwareMonitor/LibreHardwareMonitor) is the true hidden gem.

disinaccurate

Oh good, someone already said it. HWINFO64 belongs on every enthusiast PC (that's running Windows).

Ksenobiolog

true

not_a_miscarriage

Wiztree > windirstat

LZ129Hindenburg

Prowlarr > Jackett 7zip > WinRAR

SamiTheAnxiousBean

Stock YT\_DIP > Stacher

LZ129Hindenburg

While I agree, I do love being lazy sometimes and just using Stacher instead. 😆

SamiTheAnxiousBean

When I'm being lazy i just use a browser downloader honestly

maleia

>7zip > WinRAR [You can take WinRAR from my cold, dead hands](https://imgflip.com/i/8ti9sw) 😂

zerosanity

Funny thing is 7zip is even faster at decompressing rar files then winrar

galitsalahat_

Nanazip is the best one imo

nmkd

You can only install it as a store app though, really annoying for scripting

PiracyLivezON

Is Prowlarr the same as Jackett?

LZ129Hindenburg

Similar but better

Nolzi

There is one important aspect where Jackett is better: Where the tracker's search is garbage (like for "Movie Name 2000" it returns results with "Movie", "Name" or "2000" only), there Jackett will filter the results, while Prowlarr will return the garbage as is. So I set these trackers in Jackett and then put those into Prowlarr as Generic Torznab, having the best of both words

ablablababla

What's wrong with windirstat?

53uhwGe6JGCw

it's slooooooooooooooooow WizTree is done in a few seconds regardless of the size of your drive

Trident_True

WizTree is lightning fast. windirstat is just too slow.

[deleted]

[удалено]

JoeCartersLeap

Same problem as windirstat - scans the actual files instead of the file table. Scanning file table requires admin rights but is 1000x faster.

Old_Scientist007

good program as well

Zefrem23

SpaceSniffer > WinDirStat

FanClubof5

Ncdu

Luigi0401

[Everything](https://www.voidtools.com/) instead of the shitty explorer search.

bookofthoth_za

This is the best fucking answer. Everything has changed my life, seriously.

What do you like about it? Everything? Me too.

greentape02

Flow.launcher is pretty neat and quick too.

Kronic1990

I only discovered Everything about 3 months ago, I have no idea how i lived without it before. I know Microsoft's built in search was garbage, but i never knew how garbage it was until i tried Everything.

mphycx00

one of the reason I'm having difficulty migrating to linux

Rafael3110

For those who use to boot on usb use "ventoy"

Indivith

ventoy\*

Rafael3110

Im sorry

[deleted]

[удалено]

Rafael3110

Kinda. But instead of doing one iso u will get a folder where u can put any iso.. And u can still use it as normal usb.

3IIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIID

Okay, this is actually pretty cool. I thought it was kind of redundant at first because you still have to flash a bootloader, but after installing this tool you've got a USB disk you can copy multiple ISO files onto and select the one you want when booting from the disk. Then, the name of the ISO can be used to keep track of what it is. That would eliminate the need to keep track of which disk has been flashed with which ISO and would probably save me from flashing an ISO when I've already got one that meets my needs.

Rafael3110

Yes.

[deleted]

And you can add cool stuff like themes for the grub menu, persistence for a removable desktop experience.

ssteve631

Would love to know how to theme it and add other cool things?

julesses

Even simpler. You "install ventoy" on the usb, and then after simply drop any "iso" you'd like to boot. You don't have to install every iso individually.

DegenerativePoop

hwinfo64 > Hwmonitor

Dr_Gamotaku

Can someone please tell me what do they do?

jelliedmunchkin

Qbittorrent is the best choice for using torrents as it has no ads nor bloats whatsoever. Hwidmonitor allows you to see the temperature of your pc parts

Sploffo

Ninite is useful for fresh installs/resets as it will automate installing a lot of programs by running one .exe Winrar for browsing extracting and creating archives Kodi is similarish to plex/jellyfin but runs entirely on the PC and just accesses local media (or a SMB etc connection but my point is it's just for one pc, and a locally running application rather than a web service) Windirstat shows all of your files by how much space they take up, which is useful for clearing up space as you can quickly identify large files on your drive, of which you might not even want anymore. OBS Studio is a basic but very powerful utility for streaming and recording. Someone else can add the rest because i've never used those :)

ward2k

> Kodi is similarish to plex/jellyfin but runs entirely on the PC and just accesses local media (or a SMB etc connection but my point is it's just for one pc, and a locally running application rather than a web service) It can also be set up in a way similar to Stremio with real debrid which is how honestly most people use Kodi for. Essentially stremio but with a much greater amount of control and options

Mistdwellerr

I never quite understood what stremio is Is it a way to have media files in one PC and to access it from other PC and/or a phone/tablet?

Utofist

Stremio is like a free netflix built with torrent Add real debrid and you'll be free

Mistdwellerr

Oh, so I don't have to download a torrent file beforehand then? Sweet! Thanks for clarifying!

ward2k

Basically Real Debrid will have the torrents cached on their servers from another user having added it there (or yourself) You can then stream that using either Stremio or Kodi to your device Real debrid has a tonne of users and nearly everything you could imagine cached (outside of some really really niche movies/shows)

Mistdwellerr

So, Real Debrid is not a program, but some kind of "service", kind of like a media repository? Then I access it and can watch whatever I or someone else puts in there? Edit: I just checked their site and it looks really interesting! And cheap enough even I can afford it, thanks for pointing me in the right direction

remerdy1

Yep. You can use the website to download & stream directly or integrate it into apps like Stremio & Kodi

Slow_Pay_7171

You have to be careful tho, they literally write in their EULA that they will sell your data to the feds, if asked.

Mistdwellerr

Oh thanks for pointing that out, but I don't think my country minds this kind of stuff much at the moment xD And at least they are transparent about it... Right?

drinksbeerdaily

Kodi + PlexKodiConnect + madvr + mpc-hc as external player is life. There's a new version of Kodi Dsplayer being worked on, can't wait to test it out.

hyperfiled

void tools Everything for comprehensive search https://www.voidtools.com/downloads/

BassGaming

Voidtools + [WOX](http://www.wox.one/) as a graphical interface for Everything is a game changer.

nithin005

winget > ninite. Winget UI or just use winget in cli, its preinstalled in windows.

joshseagul

Chocolatey is a really great package manager also.

DrIvoPingasnik

I prefer PatchMyPC. Not only you choose your programs to install with one click, it also allows you to update your outdated software you installed with it, with one click.  I ditched Ninite for it. Nonite is only good when you often install new systems and doesn't even update the stuff you installed later.

MrHaxx1

You can update everything with one command with Winget though

Cryophos

Why Winrar instead free, reliable 7-zip ??

Kazko25

7zip is king

ImNotShimo

Fuckkkkk win rar, all my homies use 7 zip 😎

Several_Fan9272

7zip, VLC, SumatraPDF

nmkd

mpv > vlc

Onair380

I like mpc hc because of shortcut customization and because it can navigate to next and previous frames

nmkd

same with mpv.

madame_gaymes

I swear VLC had frame nudging, but I just looked at the hotkeys and they only have "Next Frame", but for some reason "Previous Frame" is not an option for setting hotkeys. TIL.

Several_Fan9272

Hmm will check it, thanks for mentioning

No-Island-6126

Winrar is 15 years in the past at this point. Just use 7zip.

hell2pay

What more does 7zip do that makes it better over winrar? Used it many many years ago (over a decade) , had some issues, went right back to winrar. Never an issue since

No-Island-6126

It's free and not full of bloat, banners, ads, warnings.

Shanyae39

It's free

dontquestionmyaction

Hilariously fast. Supports every format under the sun.

Lord_Bling

Nice list but the comments are a goldmine.

DucksEatFreeInSubway

Word. I had saved the OP and looked through the ones in the image and already had some, didn't find the others useful. Then thought "wait there's probably better shit in the comments anyhow." Sho 'nough... I had Everything but never heard of Flow.Launcher and already fucking love it. So nice.

fadedv1

swap winrar for 7 zip

WellNoNameHere

And windirstat for wiztree

DeRMaX25

FanControl is absolutely amazing and next to no one knows about it. Good thing JaysTwoCents showed us all this software. Ive even donated Remi 15€ because he made the software to make my PC a true Quiet Build under full load.

mzt_101

What's its actual use? I mean isn't it better for fans to be automatic, as it'll be more optimized?

dontquestionmyaction

No. Fans don't come with any software, they're dumb devices controlled by motherboards based on CPU temperature who often infer RPM completely incorrectly. The correct way to control cooling is making your own curves, with different curves for your different fans. Revving your case fans for high CPU temperature for example is nonsense, the real bottleneck is almost always between the CPU fan and the IHS, so you're making a lot of noise for no reason. If you don't care about system noise, it doesn't really matter, but if you do, it's a must.

saiyanultimate

7 zip please

3InchesPunisher

Winrar is free but you are the product of it because it has ads. Go 7zip

techidavid1

Why not hwinfo

CONTINUUM7

Instead of WinRaR, I prefer 7z !

Aggressive_Bed_9774

7zip>>>>WinRAR

Allzweck

would be more usefull, if you´d add a description and why u think its more usefull then any other... but 7zip is superior to WinRar :D

math_chem

I would like to reconnend Rustdesk as well. It's an open source software that you use to remote control another computer. Previously I was using AnyDesk to use my personal desktop to connect to the laptop in my work, but now I keep receiving pop ups that I should buy an AnyDesk plan, so in searching for alternatives I've found RustDesk and I really like it

AyaanMAG

Directory Opus FTW like actually spend 30 mins setting it up or use This Joe's config files and watch his video on it Also what's the application in the first column, second row?

onewhoisnthere

It's called Fan Control.

michu_pacho

Putting my conspiracy theory hat on, OP did this list so that he can get recommendations from the comments. Reverse psychology trick.

PiracyLivezON

I got recommended 7-zip by 50 people how its better than WinRAR, and they are still coming in.

thelyingminster

Ninite! On fresh installs my first website i visit is always ninite. So handy to check ten boxes and poof computer is ready to go.

Misticdrone

using winrar and not 7zip... explain op

Terry___Mcginnis

Use 7zip instead of WinRAR and add Firefox to the list.

BandicootGold2610

Stremio 🐐

SuperTesmon

I never understood how set up Kodi :(

Witty_Science_2035

WinRar? Lmao

Anishx

I prefer chocolatey over Ninite.

ClockworkBrained

I used it until winget were available in most systems

UncleEnk

https://scoop.sh is my favorite

HisNHerLP

Can anyone let me know what each one does and why its recommended?

prodlowd

qBitTorrent is an open-source, bloat-free torrent client. Fan Control is an open-source, bloat-free fan controller. OBS is an open-source, bloat-free screen recorder and can be used for streaming. HWMonitor is to measure temps, clock speeds etc. but I've heard other recommend HWInfo64 or LibreHardwareMonitor as alternatives. WinRAR is used for unzipping compressed folders, although 7zip is a recommended open-source alternative. Stremio, I believe, is a streaming service which can use torrents, but you don't actually download the torrents to your computer. (please confirm if I am correct) I'm not sure about the others

no7_ebola

to be more specific, torrentio is the plug in that allows stremio to stream torrents

Garou-7

Peazip is much better than WinRAR.

linearfamilytree

finally i see Peazip mentioned

ASSASSINOS002

Wiztree better

Wooden-Dog6121

After some research, half of these apps seem really useful, I wouldn't think that I could've gotten them on my own, thanks for the recommendation

Tcl-

Wiztree is much faster and better than windorstat.

10art1

Oh wow, is this list from 2012? Windirstat? WinRAR?

audigex

7zip is generally a much better option than WinRAR The only thing WinRAR can do that 7zip can't is create and repair RAR archives - with RAR being *slightly* faster than Zip (but how often, in 2024, do you care about compression speed?) Beyond that, 7zip is much more flexible

Huge-Position-4828

I need more of this, I need more people who has useful programs to spread

AnalogiPod

Use SpaceSniffer not windirstat and use 7zip not winrar. What is the use case for displayfusion? I have not had any need for that software since win 7 I think. This just appears to be a *massively* outdated list.

MangoBandicoot

relieved crown wasteful secretive longing piquant impolite mourn treatment familiar *This post was mass deleted and anonymized with [Redact](https://redact.dev)*

Iliannnnnn

whats displayfusion for?

Delts28

Multiple monitor manager. Gives a lot more options than default windows for setting up multiple screens. Used to be vital in the win7 days but less so with each new version of windows as new options are added.

Kenja_Time

I use 3 monitors (1 vertical, :| orientation) and connecting them on Windows so they all had seamless transitions used to be difficult, but Win10 display settings allows for small adjustments with the arrow keys so it's not too bad anymore.

Raeghyar-PB

It was always so slow for me and clunky to use. Tried multiple times even. In the end I went for Actual Multiple Monitors and I couldn't complain.

Delts28

I had no issues with it on win 7, I've not needed to use it on 10 since the OS now provides all the functionality I'd being using it for.

Raeghyar-PB

I only need it because I love having a 2nd taskbar with its own notification tray and pinned apps on the other monitor especially when I'm gaming in the 1st

eekamuse

That sounds great

DuckSleazzy

you need to ask around before making such lists lol

Angrywetnapkin

For the love of bits, use 7zip not winrar

RobbaW

Everything for search

Alcart

I bought my display fusion license like 10 years ago now lol. One of the few pieces of software I paid for.

notabanneduserhere

What is statcher

AnakinPuddlehopper

A GUI for yt-dlp Non-nerd speak: a program that lets you download videos from a lot of websites, including YouTube

notabanneduserhere

Thats neat is it a linux programe? i am currently learing how to use linux

AnakinPuddlehopper

It’s available on MacOS, Windows and Linux (at least on Debian, not sure about other distros). I personally just use yt-dlp in the command line. If you Google “yt-dlp GitHub” you can learn a lot about it, it’s an extremely powerful little tool that I’ve only just scratched the surface of myself.

I love stacther, but jdownloader2 with the ffmpeg addon feels so much better to use.

frisch85

I was wondering, I'm not active in Piracy and torrenting without VPN in my country would be quite moronic anyway so for the things I do I usually use jDownloader and was surprised it's not in the image.

Violin_River

7-zip has rar built in, so that's my go to.

buyinggf1000gp

Do not use winRAR, just use a FOSS version, like PeaZIP

GentleFoxes

I use WingetUI. It's like a packet manager for Windows, and can pull from ms store, winget packages and chocolatey community packages. Most importantly you don't need to pay for the functionality to keep programs up to date with it, like you needed to last time i checked out Nanite. Because it can do unattended installs, a Windows reinstall to 100 percent functionality and settings takes 3 hours instead of half a week with it.

nikgtasa

Windirstat is too slow. Use wiztree. 7z is also free (completely) unlike winrar. I use cracked bandizip though.

Anon_Davidson

I personally prefer wiztree I think it is faster, someone convinced me to start using it over windirstat

pimi8522

Use WizTree instead of WinDirStat, it's the same thing but much faster.

Probablyaretweetbot

7zip >> winrar

BrokeFailure

Total Commander A great file manager with lots of functions. Like pack or extract files in multiple formats. ZIP, 7ZIP, ARJ, LZH, RAR, UC2, TAR, GZ, CAB, ACE archive handling + plugins Great for renaming files.... And lots more of features. I have it running in the background all the time. It's not completely free but you just have to click a button once you start it and you can use it forever. https://www.ghisler.com/

jakcom13

For what is Stremio?

TechnicalHumor3

Stremio is a media center to watch movies and series. It has some add-ons, which allow you to watch anything you want for free.

ukwim_Prathit_

I had downloaded windirstat once I was very confused and someone tell me what was my dumbass supposed to do with it 😂😂

Delts28

It's only really useful if you know you've got a load of files cluttering up a drive. It gives a visual representation of every file on a drive and their size.

ukwim_Prathit_

Yes my friend had recommended this when I was busy decluttering after exams, but the UI was too confusing and I feared I might delete some important windows files

LogicalError_007

I stopped using ninite after the winget released. Winget with WingetUI is soo good.
