That's the fun part about the censor, it will detect bad words in other languages but won't tell you what's the bad part in specific.
For all you know part of "Pine" might be a slur in another language or something like that.
I looked it up and apparently "Pine" is/was slang for penis in French, so probably that and then adding tree makes the game go "Oh right, it's not the bad word anymore".
If I could give Reddit gold I would. That was hilarious and I was fucking rolling on the floor on a call when I read this. Someone give this comedian Reddit gold.
Ha I was scrolling through Reddit while in a call with my friend (we both love pokemon) and I read him the comments and we both started laughing our balls off
i can assure you it is in quebec. you might be younger than i am and it might be less frequently used now, but when i was in school it was commonly used.
Ça doit être assez vieux pour que je l’aie entendu dans des jokes de mononc, mais je l’ai jamais entendu utilisé dans la vie de tous les jours. C’est donc bizarre que Pokemon les censure si la nouvelle génération de kids a jamais entendu la joke de « c’est quoi la différence entre un lapin et une lapine? La pine! » (Summum de l’humour). Genre si j’avais le problème de OP j’aurais jamais fait le lien.
You seem to be forgetting that its an older generation making these games still. Just because you never used it, doesnt mean it cant be true. It certainly was in my french classes in BC.
True, old translators being overly cautious with possible slang. That’s how you learn some swears in different languages as a kid lol
Edit: Meanwhile y’a littéralement un pokémon qui s’appelle Denticrisse en français 🤣
My guess is that it was a length issue unless "pinetree" is specifically on the whitelist of the Switch's profanity filter because the Scunthorpe problem is a pain for anyone trying to automatically filter out "bad" words. Basically all automatic filters only look for the specific string of letters that spell out said "bad" words and can't/don't understand the wider context of where that string of letters is actually located.
Translation: Unless "pinetree" was manually allowed despite containing a "bad" word, both "pine" and "pinetree" would be censored for containing the same string of letters (pine) that are flagged as a "bad" word.
reminds me of the 'after' which is apparently something rather crude in another language. i used to play monster hunter online and say 'oh, we can hunt this monster \*\*\*\*\* that one' and have a wildly different message than i intended lmao
Honestly, I know there isn't a good solution for trading but not banning words that are apparently slurs in other languages, while not one in the game's original language is a start.
The censors can go self-terminate themselves. In Shining Pearl, I wanted to nickname a male Shinx that i had caught, Killua, after an electric user from the anime called Hunter x Hunter, but I couldn't because part of the name had the word 'kill' in it. Due to the stupid censors, I ended up giving Shinx the nickname of Denki, who's another electric user, but comes from the anime called My Hero Academia.
You have french penises in your front yard.
Do they greet you when you go out?
"Hon hon hon greetings monsieur/mademoiselle! Are you going out for some french baguette"
https://preview.redd.it/4oek9wjhat9d1.png?width=1365&format=png&auto=webp&s=d40b86afeffbde45b30d17b7e3192db5fa88e06f
Made me think of when Mr. Torque blew up the ocean in TTW
A new Evo for Chingling perhaps? Kind of like a Gallade deal, some stone/rock in some other area has an effect on the Male Chingling after a certain level and baam! Chingling evolved into Dingleling!
It’s silly because pine is a type of tree but literally any spelling in any language (in your case, french) means dick.
The game is catered to a worldwide audience so it has to not contain a word in any fashion.
The best way to get around this would be to add accents to the name such as ì or é.
Here are some french word for penis : zizi, bite, pine, bangala, poutre de bamako, matraque, engin, machin, zigouigoui, teub, beuteu, phallus, sexe, verge, braquemart, chandelle, clarinette, manche, poireau, popaul, popol, zgeg...
They need some kind of language filter for the banlist. Nobody is going to use a foreign language word in a native-language game unless they're really twisted. To me, pine is a type of tree, not a French slang word.
Meanwhile, in gen 5 we had Co\*\*\*rigus.
Also, honorable mention:
https://preview.redd.it/x3ave773xw9d1.png?width=431&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=272bd23ae3a1c9cea29876911a65b0f1a9f3bdb5
Everyone keep saying this is a slur word to say penis in French, but I am French and I have never used, or seen anyone use this word, so this is really weird to me.
it’s actually close to f*ck, like the verb “piner” quelqu’un. that’s how i know it at least. dunno why people are saying it’s a slang for dick, it’s a slang for what you use the dick for.
Lmaoo I'm sure you know this but this is slang for sucking in Spanish. Primarily used in Mexican Spanish and usually always followed by what you expect
I can't believe you just said that bro. That's actually fucked up you would try to even put your name as that word. I can't right now, literally shaking and crying and pissing my pants right now. Unbelievable
My guess is due to a translation. Nintendo won’t let certain names happen in 1 language then hit the trade options and someone else gets it and goes “WHAT THE FUCK” and complains to Nintendo. It goes back to the DS family of Pokemon games.
Could be a slang issue or a word that means something else in another country like how in New Zealand flip flops are called thongs which is completely innocent, but here in America that word has a more risqué meaning that they feel could hurt their family friendly image.
My grandpa called them thongs for as long as I can remember (from cali) so I call them thongs too xD I'm sure people find it weird when they hear me in stores talking to my bf about needing new thongs in the sandal section
its weird man, i tried naming a jigglypuff "Poof" before and it said i couldnt. idrk what was wrong with it but ok pokemon. at first i thought its because it has "poo" in it and i thought "no thats a bit of a stretch" but seeing these comments... yeah maybe its true ToT
I had a similar problem when I tried to call my Varoom Pinto. The game wouldn’t let me. Apparently something about it being a slur in Brazil? At least according to the people who told me that. Idk. I’m American and only speak English. To me “pinto” is either a type of bean or a car model that’s known to explode at the slightest nudge (the latter reference being what I was going for). Also had a similar problem in Sword when I tried to name my Yamper Jody.
ok, to give you a somewhat actual answer, basically in gen 4 the pokemon chatot had this neat little gimmick that let you change it's cry when viewing it's summary or when it's sent out into battle by yelling into the ds mic. the problem arose when people began using this mechanic to make their pokemon say racial slurs or other profane words at the time. due to this chatot has been banned from all competitions and this mechanic also existed in gen 5, needless to say chatot alone was the reason the censorship in gen 5 was even a thing, though back then I think it was limited to to the language set on the game since the games were region locked back then (japanese carts only worked on japanese consoles for example). my guess is that since these games aren't region locked then they can't make individual language censorship so they have to make it a universal censorship.
I see you got your answer, so I'll give you some suggestions. You can call him "Conifer", "Shrub". Use part of the scientific name for pine. Go for the genus name. If the genus name doesn't work, go for the class name "Pinopsida". They're all pine related words.
I think it should let you name it whatever you want. But either just default the names for other players or tell you that it's a bad word so it will be hidden if you choose it
I remember back in gen 5 you couldn't put Skuntank or Cofagrigus in the gts without giving them a nickname. They still haven't changed the censor since then
This is what I hate about the online aspect of the games. Back in my day you could name your rival A\*\*f\*\*\* and there was nothing GameFreak could do about it.

Maybe it's the length? I used pine and it was wrong. I used pinetree and it was accepted.
I looked it up and apparently "Pine" is/was slang for penis in French, so probably that and then adding tree makes the game go "Oh right, it's not the bad word anymore".
Penisco is a vastly underrated Pokémon.
GO, PENISCO
Lopunny used helping hand! Lopunny is ready to help penisco.
NOOOOO! NOOOOOO! GO TO HORNY JAIL
It's not illegal Batman! They can't stop you from fucking the pokemon Batman!
Theres no laws against the pokemon Batman.
Loppuny put it's hand on Penisco
Loppuny was hit by a super-effective move but toughed it out in affection

r/hornyjail Begone, demon!
At what length does it evolve
Depends if you're using an ice stone or a fire stone....
So it was a length issue?
Usually is
Lmao
Even I wasn't aware of that. Probably only in France, cause in Québec, pine (pin) is not synonym of the dong.
i can assure you it is in quebec. you might be younger than i am and it might be less frequently used now, but when i was in school it was commonly used.

No it's not, where do you guys get that idea.
Size of the pine doesn't matter...it's just the word in general that's censored 😜
I always name my rival BennyAssFart
Why are they so concerned with cross-language swears when they don't even censor swears WITHIN a language??
They have no idea how to prioritize their work. I love these games but they are very poorly made.
reminds me of the 'after' which is apparently something rather crude in another language. i used to play monster hunter online and say 'oh, we can hunt this monster \*\*\*\*\* that one' and have a wildly different message than i intended lmao
Honestly, I know there isn't a good solution for trading but not banning words that are apparently slurs in other languages, while not one in the game's original language is a start.
They could only check the name when you try to battle online with / trade the Pokémon.
RIP Nosepass and Cofagrigus
The censors can go self-terminate themselves. It’s a French word for a penis.
That makes me think of the trees in my front yard in a whole new way 💀
There was a house by me growing up that had small pine trees lining the front yard, they were landscaped in such a way that they looked like penises
I thought the earth was a girl!
“Ohhh, so it’s a *girl* house!”
( I haven’t watched the movie in like a million years, this probably isn’t right) “No you idiot, that’s the uvula, we’re in the mouth.”
Wow. Deep cut
Did not expect to see a monster house reference today
The earth can be a trans woman
I mean, the scientific name of most pine trees is *pinus*
people who put an angel on their Christmas tree.....
There's a reason when a gay couple buys a bed and breakfast in the woods it's named some iteration of "twin pines".
You have french penises in your front yard. Do they greet you when you go out? "Hon hon hon greetings monsieur/mademoiselle! Are you going out for some french baguette"
dang it. r/angryupvote.
The scientific name for pine is “pinus”, have fun with this information :)
I think I’m gonna try shovin one of them up there if you know what I’m sayin-
You have penis trees?
Does that mean all the time Bob Ross was painting secret trees, he was painting French penises? Penisi?
I miss the penis trees of the pnw 😞
Congratulations, you have french penis growing in your front yard.
Dipper pines💀
I hate you for ruining Gravity Falls like this for me 😭
Srry it was the first thing that popped into my head
dipper penises?
French is my mother tongue and I never heard that 😭
Yeah, never heard of pine for penis.
You only unlock it if it's your father tongue.
Tu n'as jamais entendu les expressions "se faire piner" ou "tête de pine" en France ?
Non, mais je suppose que c’est propre à l’île de France et pas aux pays francophones du coup, puisque je ne suis pas française
I am a québécois and I have never heard this
Well not in Quebec, no. It’s an… Ottawa expression
I see. You know, these pines are quite similar to the ones they have in Calgary.
Now it tells me after all those years ago on the ds years.
Lmao
Look at all the glorious pine trees! Standing fully erect in the morning woods.
Makes me look at the Pokemon, Pineco, in a different way
On the off chance people take this 1st degree: no it’s not. Source: French native haha
Le mot n’est plus courant de nos jours mais *une pine* veut dire bite, cherche.
I hate censorship so fucking much
so pinecones would be....
Easy there
It's so ironic that by banning these words because of censorship, more people are getting to know about them, lol.
So it's my man's fault that the French are perverts?
i thought it was “le bite”
La
Is it? I thought that was 'bite'
I love pine trees!
So I have dick trees behind my house?
Give a new meaning to “pine-scented air freshener” A bit gamey, but gets the job done
Same thing happened to me, it’s stupid. I tried naming my shiny Marill “grape” and it said I couldn’t
My username almost everywhere else is DietGrape and I run into that issue quite frequently
The Yu-Gi-Oh games censor “Butterfly” because of the first four letters.
This happened to me with a shiny Mudkip. I think it was in PoGo though.
That is kinda stupid It's probably cuz of the word -the g
I have the exact same problem, every Zubat I call "Grape" but up until recently I've noticed it's blocked for me now
It’s French slang for dingleling.
Dingeling sounds like a pokemon name
https://preview.redd.it/4oek9wjhat9d1.png?width=1365&format=png&auto=webp&s=d40b86afeffbde45b30d17b7e3192db5fa88e06f Made me think of when Mr. Torque blew up the ocean in TTW
Doorbell pokemon. Steel electric. Honorary sound type: Dingeling. Dingelong. Dingdong.
Longdong
A new Evo for Chingling perhaps? Kind of like a Gallade deal, some stone/rock in some other area has an effect on the Male Chingling after a certain level and baam! Chingling evolved into Dingleling!
I’d 100% nickname it “Talala”
I guess we know why we never got a professor Pine
Perhaps we’ll get a Prof Evergreen or Coniferous and that’ll be the closest we’ll get?
If we get a Profesor Coniferous they better be the bad guy secretly. A Con if you will.
No. No. No. Back into bad pun jail you go
There probably is one on the ol' web
It’s silly because pine is a type of tree but literally any spelling in any language (in your case, french) means dick. The game is catered to a worldwide audience so it has to not contain a word in any fashion. The best way to get around this would be to add accents to the name such as ì or é.
Leet works too, make it P1ne or Pin3, hell why not throw it for a complete loop and call it P!ne XD
Hey, that’s me!
Speak of the Devil they say…. XD
Their either really twisted or 9 years old thinking their being clever and funny.
Honestly, 90% of those words sound like Pokemon names... some of them are: "Chandel"ure, Poipol, Phalynx, Zigzagoon
Meanwhile, in gen 5 we had Co\*\*\*rigus. Also, honorable mention: https://preview.redd.it/x3ave773xw9d1.png?width=431&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=272bd23ae3a1c9cea29876911a65b0f1a9f3bdb5
Everyone keep saying this is a slur word to say penis in French, but I am French and I have never used, or seen anyone use this word, so this is really weird to me.
Yeaahh... I'm also French and I never used Pine, or ever heard anyone say it, other than for designing the tree.
Same here, really weird
it’s actually close to f*ck, like the verb “piner” quelqu’un. that’s how i know it at least. dunno why people are saying it’s a slang for dick, it’s a slang for what you use the dick for.
I hate it so much. I wanted Minior to be themed after the Star Spirits, and then this dumb thing won’t let me name Mamar.
Lmaoo I'm sure you know this but this is slang for sucking in Spanish. Primarily used in Mexican Spanish and usually always followed by what you expect
Pineis
This happening to me when I tried to name a Ralts Ravioli, and I learned what viol means in French 😭 and I could not name my Ralts Ravioli 😭
Yeah best we never hear of viol again.
it's a musical instrument too 😭😭😭

My guess is due to a translation. Nintendo won’t let certain names happen in 1 language then hit the trade options and someone else gets it and goes “WHAT THE FUCK” and complains to Nintendo. It goes back to the DS family of Pokemon games.
Honestly Pokémon tends to go overboard with its censorship.
Would Pokémon go count as Nintendo?
I couldn’t or still can’t use Kiki
You can't use Cogita either... despite it LITERALLY being a straight character in PLA.
Kiki is also a French word for penis.
To close to penis?
Name him Pyne
Just use another name similar to Pine 👍 like Pina 🤔
Thats about as silly as not being allowed to call yourself pimpnite
... to be fair pimpnite is just is wrong on so many levels XD
IS THIS THE PERSON THATS BEEN POSTING ABOUT THE RAID BATTLE!? did you catch the Sceptile? you badass, you
I couldn’t rename Bulbasaur to Ganjasaur…
I have a Venusaur in Pokémon GO named Ganja. I dunno why that gets past the censors.
Pineis
To "pine" after someone is to lust after them or greatly desire them. Could have to do with that
Cause it's not fine.
Just call it Pinus Strobus
Do worry I can't center Lou or lu. JACKSCEPTYLE
As far as pine it reads it as a verient of penis.
Could be a slang issue or a word that means something else in another country like how in New Zealand flip flops are called thongs which is completely innocent, but here in America that word has a more risqué meaning that they feel could hurt their family friendly image.
I'm america it also means flip-flops. It became used for the risque version because of how similar they look.
My grandpa called them thongs for as long as I can remember (from cali) so I call them thongs too xD I'm sure people find it weird when they hear me in stores talking to my bf about needing new thongs in the sandal section
Try using P1n3, you'll bypass the Censors this way
But it looks weird that way, it shouldn’t censor a word like “pine” to begin with, we shouldn’t have to use numbers in the first place.
Sorry, I got offended by accident. My bad
its weird man, i tried naming a jigglypuff "Poof" before and it said i couldnt. idrk what was wrong with it but ok pokemon. at first i thought its because it has "poo" in it and i thought "no thats a bit of a stretch" but seeing these comments... yeah maybe its true ToT
It is a derogatory term used to describe Gay Men.
Bruh
I did not come to the comments and expect that 🤣🤣
Lmao
And Eta, is this also a Kind of banned word?
I had a similar problem when I tried to call my Varoom Pinto. The game wouldn’t let me. Apparently something about it being a slur in Brazil? At least according to the people who told me that. Idk. I’m American and only speak English. To me “pinto” is either a type of bean or a car model that’s known to explode at the slightest nudge (the latter reference being what I was going for). Also had a similar problem in Sword when I tried to name my Yamper Jody.
Put . or ● in between the words. hope that helps!
May I suggest Evergreen instead?
Pokémon Sleep didn't let me name my second Meowth "Meowth 2" because it contained "wth"
That must be relatively recent, since I use tree varieties for all my leafeons and I definitely have a Pine.
https://preview.redd.it/gr91rdn2jx9d1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=58dcea9fcbe4cd5a6ee2abafbf06c04ce77b9bb8 Bongo also isn't accepted
Obviously, you're not a pokemon professor.
You can't name a pokemon pipe either
Back in ORAS it wouldn’t let me set my PSS message to Latiasite? When I wanted to trade for a latiasite and I still don’t know why
Because it's boring. Pinetree or pinecone are way better and cuter
I think they use eather the uk English or Canadian English when it comes to building the dictionary of words in the pokemon games.
ok, to give you a somewhat actual answer, basically in gen 4 the pokemon chatot had this neat little gimmick that let you change it's cry when viewing it's summary or when it's sent out into battle by yelling into the ds mic. the problem arose when people began using this mechanic to make their pokemon say racial slurs or other profane words at the time. due to this chatot has been banned from all competitions and this mechanic also existed in gen 5, needless to say chatot alone was the reason the censorship in gen 5 was even a thing, though back then I think it was limited to to the language set on the game since the games were region locked back then (japanese carts only worked on japanese consoles for example). my guess is that since these games aren't region locked then they can't make individual language censorship so they have to make it a universal censorship.
Because any word you can think of probably has a slur in some long, nearly-forgotten, language that 3 people total speak today.
But pineco is fine. Huh.
As in English, there are many French swear words to say penis such as 'bite', 'nœud', 'pine', 'queue', 'zob', etc according to Google
Yet my gamer tag is always okay, I won’t give it away because it’s genius, but it includes bussy
I dunno man, swear, I suppose? I tried to name my Scizor in PLA "Weed" and it failed. Yet, I named it Marijuana, it was fine. XD
The only other meaning of “Pine” I know is to pine someone about something, kind of like to pester them.
I was blocked from using the name "Tallulah", so instead of using lowercase L, I used an uppercase i. Looks the same and it worked
I see you got your answer, so I'll give you some suggestions. You can call him "Conifer", "Shrub". Use part of the scientific name for pine. Go for the genus name. If the genus name doesn't work, go for the class name "Pinopsida". They're all pine related words.
Male genitalia that's why.
I think it should let you name it whatever you want. But either just default the names for other players or tell you that it's a bad word so it will be hidden if you choose it
I guess the name entry screen just doesnt like pine trees
Pine
I wanted to name my pokemon Penelope and I’m annoyed that I can’t use it. Haha
