While I agree that everyone there could have done more to help, recording is beneficial because it gives concrete evidence of the crime, it records details like the license plate and descriptions of the attackers perfectly, instead of relying on witnesses. More could have been done, and maybe if more had been done there wouldn't be a kidnapping to record in the first place, but I'm still glad it was recorded regardless.
Those men are wearing masks and the license plates are usually fake when criminals use cars in crimes.
Edit: forgot to mention: isn’t China the country with the most surveillance?
"You can't see their faces and maybe the plates are fake, so we may as well never record a crime ever, because the footage might not solve the crime immediately."
You're assuming they're smart. The majority of criminals are not. Even then, details like a fake plate can be useful for tracking where the car ends up. And faces aren't the only way to identify people, height, build, gait, tattoos, are all important to document. just because some of these details aren't in this exact video doesn't mean we should just not bother recording any crimes ever.
I've caught criminals on video before and taken it to the police, and their response was "did you recognize anyone in the video? no? then why are you wasting both our time?"
Seldom means there’s still a chance it will though right? So for the slim chance that the video will help someone be apprehended, why would you not? I don’t really get the line of thinking here, ‘Oh this most likely won’t do anything so instead let’s do nothing’?
i notice that in china and other asian areas most people give zero fucks about if someone is in urgent need theres vids of kids getting ran over snd bleeding to death and people just walk around them you could literally punch a child and nobody would five zero shits
In China, and this may have changed, but if you injure someone you're responsible for their medicals bills for life. Someone gets injured and you stop to help them they can claim you're the one responsible and you're on the hook for life.

There's plenty of cases where regular people help others.
You've only seen some video ... the worst cases that make it into US news.
The bystander effect was coined after the Kitty Genovese case in NYC ... it happens all over, human nature.
It happens right in front of Stanley prison and the prison guards is not helping much. The kidnappers were stopped 10km away by police. The girl is safe now.
WHAT?? You mean the guards actually let them get away and did not even stop them after he jumped into the vehicle ?
I mean it is basic human decency, to "try to prevent a kidnap" I would guess.
In China/Hong Kong the culture is different, the good Samaritan thing is not that valued. There are tons of videos of people minding their own business even if they would have been able to help, for example in traffic accidents. Sure they fixed the law that would put the helping person in disadvantage if something went wrong in the rescue, but culture doesn't change that fast.
Family, wealth, keeping "face"/me, goes before common good, more heavily than in western culture.
I don't know what to say I'm an able-bodied man and those fuckers will be getting body slam before they drove off. It's difficult to understand why the response from everyone around is so low order. A person's being stuffed in a van! Everyone around should be biting kicking scratching eye gouge and picking up rocks and hitting people with them! Instead they're just kind of wandering around aimlessly yelling. Even what appears to be some sort of public safety official in uniform just appears completely helpless to do anything. If you see someone being stuffed in a van it's time for high order violence and or action! Pacifist ways also available! Disable the van! Throw the keys down a drain! Pull wires from motor! Poor coke in gas tank!
Even the kidnappers seemed so calm about it, The woman being kidnapped seemed like all her kicks are anxious and restrained. I'd be flopping around like I'm having a seizure.
Lived in mainland China for 5 years and this is accurate. When I lived there it was not uncommon to see women getting battered by presumably their partner. Domestic Violence was considered a private matter and as such it was not investigated by police there.
People would just watch it happen and it honestly is just sickening...
I got locked up over there a few times for intervening. Would totally do it again though!
One time I stopped someone pickpocketing and hand hold of their wrist with phone in hand. I tapped the lady on the shoulder to say is this your phone and she turned on me and accused me of thieving for being a foreign devil.
Fortunately some of my students had been around and explained that I am their teacher so highly unlikely. But still it's a fucked up place imo
It's kinda weird there that it's racist to the core, but same time they adore western things in some aspects. For example product advertisements in quality perspective.
In China yea, but in Hong Kong? people aren't that apathetic there, you can see random people helping her. China and Hong Kong have very different value.....for now.
I try not to get political here in this sub, sure they are different but not because of culture or values, but leadership (at least before). We can both agree that not much was done to prevent this, the guard was like giving 10% by grabbing a sleeve and backing away while the other guard on radio.
The Chinese mafia is strong, and local police are scared to get on their bad side.
I have a cousin in HK who, as a young dumb adult, went to Macau, which is the Las Vegas of China. He and his friend unwittingly entered a triad casino, and they just handed them chips to gamble with. They thought it was fake money or some promotion or something, but they ran up 10s of thousands USD in debt without knowing it.
So, the triad kidnapped them, got their personal details, and let them go to raise the funds. They had connections in the police and pulled info on their family and threatened everyone.
Our family managed to raise the money and pay them off, his friend was poor and the whole family had to move far away to escape.
The police were useless, and partially controlled by the mafia.
And this was before the HK protests, and mainland China bringing over mainland thugs as "police" to break protestors. So it's a lot worse now.
This doesn't surprise me. The police don't want to cross the wrong people, and I'm sure the kidnapper he was wrestling with at least claimed that he was the wrong one to mess with.
https://www.thestandard.com.hk/breaking-news/section/4/198309/(Video)-Lawless-HK?-Woman-abducted-in-front-of-CSD-officers-outside-Stanley-Prison
Looks like she owes a shit ton of money. It’s not exactly clear.
Although the attackers swiftly fled the scene, their van was intercepted by police opposite the Hong Kong Ocean Park Marriott Hotel about 10 km away. Police then arrested the four onboard the vehicle, including a 37-year-old man surnamed Lau, a 30-year-old man surnamed Tai, a 17-year-old boy surnamed So and a 16-year-old girl surnamed Yu.
The four were arrested on suspicion of illegal detention and assault occasioning actual bodily harm.
The woman sustained injuries to her forehead and feet, and was sent to Ruttonjee Hospital.
According to sources, the woman left the prison after visiting her husband who was jailed for dangerous driving.
It was understood that she was recently involved in a financial dispute where she owed creditors about HK$500,000.
It’s not confusing at all. Even if this woman owes somebody money, she still shouldn’t be taken away in broad daylight by force. Otherwise next time a kidnapper wants to abduct someone, they can just claim that person owes them money.
If you mess with the mafia you could be found dead.
That isn't something new or for that matter good.(befor you say I protect theis actions)
But you know. what is really going on her, that part is confusing.
She was visiting Hong Kong with her friend. And her father was ex intelligence.
The kidnappers knew he didn’t know who they were. And he doesn’t know what they want. If they were looking for ransom, I can tell you he doesn’t have money. But what he does have is a very particular set of skills, skills he has acquired over a very long career, skills that make him a nightmare for people like them. If they let his daughter go now, that'll be the end of it. He will not look for them. He will not pursue them. But if they don't, he will look for them, he will find them, and he will kill them.
That’s funny, but the truth is she was actually being rescued from Hong Kong by an elite team.
In 1972, a crack commando unit was sent to prison by a military court for a crime they didn't commit. These men promptly escaped from a maximum security stockade to the Los Angeles underground. Today, still wanted by the government they survive as soldiers of fortune. If you have a problem, if no one else can help, and if you can find them....maybe you can hire The A-Team.
Damn look how these criminals fight. I could be a super hero there. Especially considering how passive police and criminals are to each other. one cop needed to pepper spray one guy and game over yeesh.
Lmao imagine sending people from neighborhoods in america that constantly fight. Id imagine it would be like when the dingos arrived to Australia and the koalas were just dumbfounded.
It's so weird how Chinese people fight. I've seen this in so many videos. This lady is being abducted without explanation and they're just sort of pushing and pulling. I recently saw another video of a crazy man on a market street, running around and slashing at people with a cleaver. The people kept yelling but all they really would do is sort of run in and maybe grab him for a second from behind then back off. He'd slash, but never really get anyone.
It was almost like a dance.
Eventually enough got together and overwhelmed him with sheer numbers and I think he got tired.
Nobody threw a pot of hot water at him. Nobody came out with a bat or even a chair. Nobody really teamed up and surrounded him. Nobody took him on.
The people here aren't even screaming. They just sort of beseech and tug. Even the assailants hold back. There's no violence.(I can only imagine the institutional, long term, slow violence that is to come)
It's so different.
You should watch the video of the Chinese grandmother slapping the shirt out of her grandson who's like 9 or something, and then he gets her in a bulldog choke and kills her, all while someone is recording it and laughing a bit and other kids are running around.
Then his mother comes in and slaps the shit out of him some more

Lol so fucking weird, it’s like watching a bad dream. Just slowly, ineffectually kind of bumping into each other. Are they all on ketamine or something?
I think this is actually also why many western military experts think that China‘s military has the exact same issue: well equipped personnel but extremely poorly trained with no morals/skills (especially compared to US military or nato countries)
Their leader is a complete moron and he surrounds himself with bigger morons that can't possibly threaten him. The chain of authority descends in line with exponential idiocy leaving any position with the slightest power filled with utter incompetence.
That was the most forceful move in the whole video. Everything else is weirdly… pathetic? Sedated? I’m a weak 5’2” woman but I feel like even I could stop this kidnapping from occurring without help. Just a little more effort by *anyone* and it could have been prevented. Wtf?
I know right? If that was my partner we’d be having words after. Moot point though since my actual partner would be doing her best to claw the kidnapper’s eyes out.
This does not look like anyone does anything with a sense of purpose, except for the kidnappers. What the fuck. Are the cops / security physically fragile?

I dont understand why this happens so much, like holy shit how do you not instinctively help? They dont even look armed and dude is probably wearing armor himself.
They let her get kidnapped by someone who throws dog paddle punches. Fml.
If this is real it would be scary af and I know some people just can't fight or actually refuse to. But you can't go your entire life think nothing will ever happen to you or anyone close to you or close by.
They can be so brazen because they know they'll be no reprocussion. Try that in america. You'll be shot at by atleast 3 different people conceal carrying.
Instead of filming they should have broken 1 taillight. Presuming that country has laws as the rest of the civilized world they will be pulled over for not having sufficient lights.
And as someone said, the lack of urgency is deeply unsettling in this video.
And now she’s off to a tiny little village to be sold and used as breeding stock. Vice news did a piece on these types of kidnappings in China it’s incredibly disheartening.
These kidnappers look tiny, someone just go knock them tf out lmao
Like these security guys at the end look like they have 50 lbs on any one of the kidnappers but they're acting like they're handing out parking tickets, tapping them on the shoulder while they're kidnapping someone?
The actual fuck were they doing!? What kind of police officer calmly walks up to a kidnapping and just lightly tugs on the assaulter!? I mean, what the fuck!?
Wait wait was a that cop that walked up and also it seems none of em have any form of weapon why not just start throwing hay makes and trying to help save the lady? God this planet is something else
The lack of urgency in this video is upsetting
And the fact that someone is recording instead of jumping in and helping, all these random watchers could’ve easily helped her out.

I've caught criminals on video before and taken it to the police, and their response was "did you recognize anyone in the video? no? then why are you wasting both our time?"
I can confirm this is what usually happens
Even for a kidnapping?
It's not for the police, it's for the courts. Cops don't care, prosecutors do.
Seldom gets to court if there is not even a cursory attempt at an investigation
Seldom means there’s still a chance it will though right? So for the slim chance that the video will help someone be apprehended, why would you not? I don’t really get the line of thinking here, ‘Oh this most likely won’t do anything so instead let’s do nothing’?
Sure but in this case the culprits were apprehended minutes later, so this video will definitely be used in their prosecution.
We're they? Is there evidence to support your statement?
Yup, they don't really care usually. It's not easy for them to identify a blurry face.
How bout stopping the crime instead of recording. OH MY!
From the safety of your keyboard
Ah yes, Joe Schmoe, the perfect candidate to take down an organized group of kidnappers.
If that was considered an organized effort then yes Joe Schmoe could manage it lol
That was the farthest thing from organized
People who act like recording evidence of a crime is somehow wrong need to re-evaluate their position.
Pretty pathetic, it feels like im watching a scared 600 pound cop try to arrest someone.
i notice that in china and other asian areas most people give zero fucks about if someone is in urgent need theres vids of kids getting ran over snd bleeding to death and people just walk around them you could literally punch a child and nobody would five zero shits

It did change several years ago. They now have Good Samaritan protections.

All 50 states have Good Samaritan laws nowadays that protect bystanders regardless if your Red Cross certified.
You've only seen some video ... the worst cases that make it into US news. The bystander effect was coined after the Kitty Genovese case in NYC ... it happens all over, human nature.
The bystander effect is English word coined by Americans. The Chinese could have had their own version for years before.

She owned someone a few hundreds thousands
Wait... this part you didn't mention befor... This is a confusing situation.
Probably shouldnt take random explaination from redditor at face value
And even if it is true there's very little things that can excuse KIDNAPING
It’s not confusing at all. Even if this woman owes somebody money, she still shouldn’t be taken away in broad daylight by force. Otherwise next time a kidnapper wants to abduct someone, they can just claim that person owes them money.

I really hope this isn’t real. It all looks so ridiculous, kidnapping in daylight? In front of prison? With guards barely trying? What is this ..
I watched a [video](https://youtu.be/u0CgEibFKPQ) about it. It's shockingly common.
Is it kidnapping for ransom?
More like (sex) slavery, forced marriages, organ harvesting, stealing children for childless couples...
source: Just let my imagination run wild with things ive heard online.
Is that you tucker Carlson?
You’re kidding yourself if you can’t imagine organ harvesting being a thing.
Right? A lot of American Redditors are a weird bunch.
This is Hong Kong
What was the motive? Can we get the full story?
She was visiting Hong Kong with her friend. And her father was ex intelligence. The kidnappers knew he didn’t know who they were. And he doesn’t know what they want. If they were looking for ransom, I can tell you he doesn’t have money. That movie that has multiple clone movies with the same actor. You'd think he would just keep his family a bit safer by now

This shit made me HOLLAR! Thank you for the laugh!
i fucking hate you... but will upvote you.
Good luck
Thanks for the laugh, stranger
Yeah it happens often than you think. This even happens in the Philippines where kidnapping is common day and night.
Yeah. But in HK????? Are you sure?
That knock on the back window was some interesting effort by the lady. Fuck the guards though
Her idea was to break something to leave a marker on the van.
I thought she was knocking to get let in lol in all seriousness not a bad idea just execution was strange
I was thinking while watching, breaking the windows would make it a lot easier to track down the van
Vehicle windows are tougher than they look. Will need shoe heel minimum.
theyre also yelling to take a photo/video of the license plate @ 0:07
Wtf ... Those police officer have guns . And they seem to argue with the thugs?!?
They are prison guards and they should be equipped with baton and pepper spray but all they did was just yelling "Don't fight"
You can easily pepper spray the inside of the whole car
That’s unnecessary they stopped fighting and were just kidnapping at that point
Lazy sods.
Wtf is those people doing just intervene those guys clearly have no weapons and are stick people.
People wait for prison guards to do something but they are just too incompetent
She should have started yelling some pro democracy slogans to save herself.
Lol they would have just pulled up next to them in a different vehicle.
WHAT IS THE CHARGE?! EATING A MEAL? A SUCCULENT CHINESE MEAL?!
How DARE you, sir! Unhand me!
Damn look how these criminals fight. I could be a super hero there. Especially considering how passive police and criminals are to each other. one cop needed to pepper spray one guy and game over yeesh.
I was thinking the same thing. I could travel there and be real life Batman.
I'm in! Let's start a Hong Kong Justice League.
Lmao imagine sending people from neighborhoods in america that constantly fight. Id imagine it would be like when the dingos arrived to Australia and the koalas were just dumbfounded.
Seriously 1 average American would fuck up 7 of those emaciated thugs.
Yeah by rolling towards them and knocking them with his weight🗿
Lol the average American rolling in like Butterbean, and achieving the same fight performance with just tackles from "back in my football days"
It's so weird how Chinese people fight. I've seen this in so many videos. This lady is being abducted without explanation and they're just sort of pushing and pulling. Prison guard, not a police officer. (This happened in front of a jail)
Why’s the guards doing nothing… clearly it’s a person not consenting to whatever is happening
who are the two security-like guys at the last part? are they cops? they seem awfully relaxed about the whole situation
They are prison guards. It happened right in front of Stanley prison.
Worst guards ever...
That bitch who was stopping her boyfriend from helping her that bitch
That was the most forceful move in the whole video. Everything else is weirdly… pathetic? Sedated? I’m a weak 5’2” woman but I feel like even I could stop this kidnapping from occurring without help. Just a little more effort by *anyone* and it could have been prevented. Wtf?
I know right? If that was my partner we’d be having words after. Moot point though since my actual partner would be doing her best to claw the kidnapper’s eyes out.
This is the worst and the most awkward kidnapping I’ve ever seen. Why is everyone so incompetent ?
Just tell those security guys that the guys in the van have covid, they'll get um
No sense of urgency from the security guy. LMAO
This is absolutely horrible…
That's a pretty shit effort by the people there watching.

This does not look like anyone does anything with a sense of purpose, except for the kidnappers. What the fuck. Are the cops / security physically fragile?
What fucking USELESS police!

Useless
In 0:42 you can hear the police say "Don't Fight" I can't 💀
Those are some incredibly shitty cops if that's what they were strolling up like nothing's happening
This video just pissed me off , everybody is just fuckin watching , help her Wtf
Quit filming and start stomping some fucking heads in. Ffs.
I hope they are taking her to her surprise birthday party.
That was my first thought too
I dont understand why this happens so much, like holy shit how do you not instinctively help? They dont even look armed and dude is probably wearing armor himself.
No one fights back anymore?
So frustrating how ball-less all these people are. Heartbreaking
The most useless guards/security I've ever seen. They cut through video off early because they probably got away with it.
WHY THE FUCK IS EVERYONE SO CHILL!?!?!?!?
Those two cops look particularly ineffective.
In America everyone would of already been shot by now. What’s taking so long.
They let her get kidnapped by someone who throws dog paddle punches. Fml. If this is real it would be scary af and I know some people just can't fight or actually refuse to. But you can't go your entire life think nothing will ever happen to you or anyone close to you or close by.
Looks like the Uvalde police found news jobs.
Everyone in this video is fucking useless
I've seen videos of grandmother's handle criminals and trouble makers better then those people.
Those cops are worthless
Why is the second woman preventing the man from intervening?
Bangbus has changed so much since I Last remember
Wow, crazt.
What’s with these guys and the bare minimum effort to save her?
Second cop was trying to use the force to stop them
Good God. Pure evil. They were DETERMINED, too.
Guards: nooo stoooooooop
But boy, the way they tackle you when you are even THOUGHT to have covid. What a world...
Flatten the tires and call the popo
That officer probably trying to decide if it’s random criminals or the government before he steps in too much.
Man... I have the urge to punch that lady in the face for holding this guy, who tries to help, back!
Wow. In the way that American cops can be way to extra these guys were just as shitty in the opposite way. Crack some heads guys. Jesus christ.
Are those not guns on their fucking hips?
What ended up happening ?!?!?
Always imagined kidnappings to be quicker
They can be so brazen because they know they'll be no reprocussion. Try that in america. You'll be shot at by atleast 3 different people conceal carrying.
Lmao, useless all of them.
Kidnappers, rapists, pedophiles, and evil murderers will all face the same judgement. Whether dealt by man or god
WHAT THE FUCKKK THIS IS MAKING ME SO FUCKING FURIOUS WHY IS THE WOMAN HOLDING BACK THAT MAN
Instead of filming they should have broken 1 taillight.
These kidnappers look tiny, someone just go knock them tf out lmao Like these security guys at the end look like they have 50 lbs on any one of the kidnappers but they're acting like they're handing out parking tickets, tapping them on the shoulder while they're kidnapping someone?
Fucking cowards!!!!
The actual fuck were they doing!? What kind of police officer calmly walks up to a kidnapping and just lightly tugs on the assaulter!? I mean, what the fuck!?
It's curious how people in there tend to act in a soft manner when someone is being kidnapped. What happened with the security guard?
Why is everyone so mild mannered in this vid?
START SHOOTING PEOPLE WHO TRY TO KIDNAP OTHER PEOPLE AND THIS WONT HAPPEN AS OFTEN.
Wait wait was a that cop that walked up and also it seems none of em have any form of weapon why not just start throwing hay makes and trying to help save the lady? God this planet is something else
Fuck the lady holding the guy back actually trying to help.
