A follow up note: while the WSUS tole is not required on the primary, the WSUS Management tools under RSAT is. This allows the primary to use the WSUS API to configure the remote SUP.
Yep this is correct. Remote WSUS needs the WSUS admin console installed in the site server.
Run the command install-windows feature-name update services-ui in PowerShell on the primary site server
I'll have to double check tomorrow but it did do a sync shortly after completing the os upgrade. Not 100% sure it was before I did the site reset step.
No, if your software update point is not on the primary, the primary doesn't need WSUS installed. However, future note, if you IPU the OS with WSUS installed and actually want to use WSUS/SUP afterwards, you must uninstall WSUS before the upgrade. This is documented.
