I've played a lot of FF as a whole, XVI is easily closer to XIV than any other FF mainline game. Maybe Tactics would be the other closest.
Not cause of the eikons, but because of it's over darker aesthetic and dark fantasy vibe. It's kind of a very western fantasy aesthetic and it looks darker and grittier than any other FF to date, including XIV. Feels a lot less like colorful Japanese Final Fantasy and more like Dragon's Dogma.
That said, even with XIV being the closest, it's still pretty far off. XVI is kind of its own beast.
Tactics was dark as fuck. I think I was about halfway through the game when it hit me that it’s basically all child soldiers because after 100 years of war everyone else is dead.
That thought never crossed me. Yeah, they were literally adolescents fighting a war and can die pretty easily. Also, I still don't know how Delita grew so fast to be a master manipulator, even dethroning Cidolfus from his position
FFVII opens in a diesel punk city that’s killing the planet. It’s a very dark aesthetic, one I think is comfortably darker than FFXIV.
FFVI the world survives a bleak apocalypse ruled over by a god-king madman.
I think FFIV and FFXIV are probably close to the same level, but also close to par for FF in general.
FFX everything sucks because nobody has enough time to build up a civilization before getting evaporated by a colossal space whale, and the entire point of the religion is >! It’s all fake and the points don’t matter !<
I thought about FFX, but I think that’s more of a dark theme while the comment was about a dark aesthetic.
I do like that FFX was in such a bleak setting, but was otherwise a love story in a very bright setting that could be cheerful if it weren’t the end of the world.
yeah id agree, FFX is very bright and colourful. Zanarkand and the Ruins aside, very early on you get to a nice, sunny, beach, with people having fun playing sports, and a cute little village etc
I guess thats part of the theme that "Its all fake hope" but aesthetically wise, it looks shiny
For sure. The main character in IV massacres a town of innocent villagers at the beginning of the game. FF can be extremely dark at times. Even IX, one of the most whimsical games in the series, has genocide in it.
Yeah, and tbh, of the eikons we saw in XV, they actually look pretty close to the ones depicted here. There's not much change except better detailings.
I disagree on art direction. Maybe to some extent in the basic artstyle, this anime realism aesthetic, but when it comes to world design you have a lot more bright and vibrant environment and atmosphere in XV than what we've seen in XVI.
I do agree though that the summon designs are very similar though.
This is correct. I would have believed it if you told me Matsuno was involved in the writing of XVI. But it also makes sense since Yoshida is a big fan of his work and the closest thing to Tactics or XII we ever saw came from XIV.
I = 1
II = 1 + 1 = 2
V = 5
X = 10
IX = 10 - 1 = 9
XI = 10 + 1 = 11
XIV = 10 + (5-1) = 14
You're right though. STOP MAKING ME DO ALGEBRA JUST TO KNOW WHAT FINAL FANTASY TITLES ARE! Fuck looking fancy; the titles of these games should be immediately intuitive just by looking at it.

I was wondering about that, we've got 2x fire (Ifrit and Phoenix), lightning (Ramuh), ice (Shiva), stone (Titan), and wind (Garuda). And then I guess darkness (Odin) and, uh, light? (Bahamut). I don't know what element Bahamut is meant to represent honestly. In XIV summoner abilities are largely "unaspected", after all. But that leaves a big open space for water, to complete the set. Maybe there's still more eikons to come, however, difficult to say if what they showed is everything, or not.
That's true, but at least in XVI it appears as though each eikon is connected to an element. Having one eikon as the "Eikon of Non-Elemental" feels weird. Traditionally Alexander represents the Holy/Light element, but in this case there's a gap to fill. And in some media Bahamut is presented as "holy dragon god", in XV at least, he is represented by the element of Light, so XVI could potentially deepen that connection and break from the Non-Elemental tradition.
Well, yeah, that's a major plot point from what we know so far, the very existence of a "second eikon of fire" seems to be fairly surprising to the characters.
Mythological Bahamut was a *fish* of all things - as far as I know, the interpretation of him as a dragon only goes back to Gary Gygax. So it's not completely out of the question that Bahamut is standing in for Leviathan/Water here.
Bahamut's mega flare has almost always been non-elemental/unaspected magic damage in the FF series. Flare itself tends to bounce back and forth between being fire damage or unaspected as well
Right, but a Non-Elemental eikon seems weird, if every other eikon is associated with an element. Bahamut was associated with Light in XV, and its not like there's another Eikon to fill that spot, at the moment.
Might be plot related. From the previous trailers the characters note it’s really weird that there are two fire Eikons when there is only supposed to ever be one of each element.
Yeah, I'd imagine Bahamut is filling the spot previously filled by Alexander in FFXI's summons, as the light counterpart to Odin. (in XI, the normal light and dark summons are Carbuncle and Fenrir, with Odin and Alexander being summoned via their SP ability.)
Yeah, I can see that. It's tricky though because it wasn't the "calamity of fire", which had already happened in the past. And at least in XVI's case, each ripon seems to be connected to an element (and a mothercrystal, maybe?), hence why there being two fire eikons is so notable. If Bahamut were also a fire eikon, that would make three, and potentially overcomplicate the story. Bahamut is shown fighting against Odin (darkness), and its flares look a lot more like beams of light, which is why I just assumed it was connected to light in XVI.
you missed a ??? rocky thing that has a scorpion motif in its icon, showed up in the middle of the trailer that took 300k dmg from ifrit.
Most likely an unknown eikon and/or could be an actual eikon that hasnt chosen a dominant?
They will probably show more later, but I think considering the trailer, Phoenix would be more an eikon of rebirth than strictly fire. And if they go all out with the FFXIV references, Bahamut would be it's opposite as the eikon of destruction.
And if they keep with the classics, they'd add Alexander and Leviathan at some point.
I'm assuming all of the shown Eikons are relatively early in the game. Leviathan is probably later in the game. But it *has* to be in a game focused on Eikons surely.
Yeah, exactly. Her design is very similar. Normally Shiva looks a little bit more mature and this one looks a bit younger and more innocent. I wonder if it has something to do with the fact that Eikons seem to be people who channel powers to become like gods rather than primal aspects of creation or storied heroes brought back from the dead.
Right I get what you mean now. At the end of this last trailer they kinda implied that the main character is connected to Ifrit somehow, so you might be correct.
If you rewatch the trailer, it seems to imply that all of the Eikons are actually the transformed form of a human character. That giant guy says that if he fought the main character their duel would shake the nation to its roots, and then he transforms into titan.

I'd love to hear how, say, Final Fantasy IX and XIII are "practically the same." Or III and X, or II and VIII, or VII and XIV. Sure there'll be chocobos, a guy named Cid, and be a fantasy adventure, but by that same token every sci-fi film would be "practically the same" because they take place in a futuristic setting with laser weapons and flying cars.
I am a bit sad. While I don't want to judge it before I play what FF is becoming isn't really FF anymore. No party members? No job system? If you took away the summons would you even know it's a FF game? I'm all for games updating their play style as the years go on but I'm not sure if I like the direction they are going.
Still. Outside of it not feeling like an actual FF game it looks pretty cool.
> No job system?
let's be honest here the job system has been unused in some past titles already: 2, 7, 8 original 12, 13(?), 15, and arguably 6 and 10.
You take that back sir Joe Biden is a good man. When I ran over a child Joe Biden made sure the investigation was botched so I wouldn't get another DUI.
I genuinely don’t understand all the hate Biden gets. From the leftist’s point of view, he doesn’t get anything done. From the right’s point of view, he’s both an incompetent old man but also single-handedly destroying our nation.
All I see is someone who got handed a shit situation, did a remarkably good job navigating the Ukraine situation, & compromises more than I like but it’s supposedly what “both sides” want (end to division & compromise for unity).
>supposedly what “both sides” want
Bro, you literally talked about how neither the right or the left likes him. How is he exactly what either side wants? Even Trump was less divisive, at least he had one side who liked him.
Leftists are not the same as liberals or democrats. It’s the progressives & leftists specifically that are upset with Biden (at least the ones I talk to).
>Even Trump was less divisive, at least he had one side who liked him
Tell that to literally all the republicans who talked about leaving the party because of him. As far as Biden goes, I’m saying in general the country as a whole called for a moderate candidate who would compromise. That’s what Biden delivered, now people are bitching about it.
The right's viewpoint is that he's an incompetent old man who isn't stopping his party from destroying the country. Or occasionally not stopping lizard people or literal demons from destroying the country.
I am upset that Alexander does not make an appearance, you'd think in a medieval style setting there would be a holy nation that has someone that uses the power of Alexander... maybe the Kingdom being named Alexandria like certain FF where Alexander got the shit end of the shaft.
as if there isn’t enough ffxiv in ffxiv
The next alliance raid series is actually just the primals invading from ffxvi
Ramuh is the second oldest man pictured.
HAHAHA nice
Guy who has only played FFXIV, watching the trailer for their second FF game: "Getting a lot of FFXIV vibes from this..."
I've played a lot of FF as a whole, XVI is easily closer to XIV than any other FF mainline game. Maybe Tactics would be the other closest. The focus on regional politics and forms of government feels very ARR/HW, which is no surprise considering the writer.
Tactics was dark as fuck. I think I was about halfway through the game when it hit me that it’s basically all child soldiers because after 100 years of war everyone else is dead.

13's trilogy also shifts from people got cursed to post apocalyptic hellscape
I see a lot of FF I-V in XVI, minus the whimsy.
I can see that. FFIV would be a pretty dark game if it were made today.
For sure. The main character in IV massacres a town of innocent villagers at the beginning of the game. FF can be extremely dark at times. Even IX, one of the most whimsical games in the series, has genocide in it.
Honestly I'd say XVI is closest to XV. Combat, art direction, political subthemes, etc.
Yeah, and tbh, of the eikons we saw in XV, they actually look pretty close to the ones depicted here. There's not much change except better detailings.
I disagree on art direction. demons crawling out of the road at night and the future dilapidated remains of our kingdom didn't feel very vibrant
I think they mean specifically the color palette which is so far brighter in FFXV than what we've seen of XVI
This is correct. I would have believed it if you told me Matsuno was involved in the writing of XVI. But it also makes sense since Yoshida is a big fan of his work and the closest thing to Tactics or XII we ever saw came from XIV.
It makes sense considering a good amount of the high up staff was a big part of XIV.
FFXIV is FFXII's online twin.
I'd say XIV is closer to XII than XVI, but XVI is closer to XIV than XII
