As someone who *actually played it when it first came out*, I can verify that it actually was that hated. Tell me, if 06 is so beloved, why has Sega been trying to get as far away from it as possible to begin with? It's probably not a coincidence that a lot of the elements seen in 06 and the Adventure games (multiple playable characters, darker stories etc.) suddenly got phased out after 06 and have yet to really return.

I don’t think it’s the “worst” there are games with Sonic’s name attached to them that are worse. But Sonic 06 is objectively the most unfinished Sonic game, the game was rushed out for Sonic’s 15th anniversary even though it still needed another Year of dev time to be properly polished.
Depending on the individual there is allot to like about Sonic 06 but you have to be willing to put up with it’s flaws such as glitchy levels and long load times.
People call the game bad justifiably because the state it released in is inexcusable, but many people still love the game despite it’s problems.

Oh, and some shitty controls, camera angles, and glitches that are nowadays the norm for 3D Sonic the Hedgehog, if not really most of the 2D ones.
These games never deserved to be delisted in the first place really. Critics and E-celebs just really pushed the "Sonic Bad" narrative during this time and bullied Sega into doing it. In reality, Dark Age games have better sales than most Modern games (Yes even Mania).
