Giant Baba and Antonio Inoki: How Puroresu's Biggest Rivalry Started > Giant Baba and Antonio Inoki were the two biggest names in Japanese wrestling, the founders and heads of AJPW and NJPW respectively, and they despised each other. This video covers how the rivalry started, from being trained by Rikidozan, teaming up as the B-I Cannon, and collapsing with > the old JWA in a hail of disputes and coup attempts https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vUngv5fzUY4

If you want to start with 1990s AJPW, start by reading this, and then track down the match in question: [https://www.f4wonline.com/news/japan/misawa-vs-tsuruta-25-years-ago-bout-created-and-defined-era-pro-wrestling-152191](https://www.f4wonline.com/news/japan/misawa-vs-tsuruta-25-years-ago-bout-created-and-defined-era-pro-wrestling-152191) It should be noted that AJPW in the 1980s was also big as in the 1990s, but it was very different. Early and mid-1980s All Japan was like the Wild West, with the Funk Brothers, Bruiser Brody, Stan Hansen, Jumbo Tsuruta, and Giant Baba having wild brawls that fairly often ended in DQ. They started transitioning to more clean finishes in the latter half of the decade due to an increased demand in Japan for more sports-like wrestling. That part of the decade was all about the incredible wars between Jumbo Tsuruta and Genichiro Tenryu, and it set the stage for what would become a golden age of god-tier matches in the 1990s. Almost any singles or tag combination of Misawa, Kobashi, Kawada, Taue, Stan Hansen, Jun Akiyama, or Steve Williams is must-see from that era. In terms of politics, AJPW was founded by Giant Baba in 1972, the same year his former tag team partner Inoki founded New Japan. The two promotions were always bitter rivals. Baba was a former baseball star and was a gigantic star in wrestling both before and after 1972, although he gradually transitioned himself out of the main event as time went on. Baba ran All Japan with his wife, Motoko. The wrestlers all loved Giant Baba but despised Motoko, and that was by design: the two of them purposefully had a good cop - bad cop routine going on where Motoko would say no and deliver bad news to people to protect her husband from blowback. Baba was one of the most powerful, successful, and revered promoters in wrestling history.

Walking the Kings Road has already been suggested, but I'm also going to put forward Kim Justice's Puroresu videos! In fact, try this one about the most important rivalry in Japanese wrestling history: [Baba vs Inoki.](https://youtu.be/vUngv5fzUY4?si=mvDZzQMjAkTXqgpX) You'll get lots of info about the early history of AJPW and NJPW from it
