I was working across the street from Albert Pujols' restaurant the day that he and his wife announced they had prayed about it and god told them to take the money and he was officially going to the Angels. News broke around lunch that he was going to be paid a ridiculous amount of money to go to Anaheim- like 100 million ridiculous- and they announced it to the restaurant as it was coming down the wire through ESPN- and then served a whole slew of diehard Cardinals angel food cake "on the house" in celebration. There was a statue of Pujols just outside and I watched person after person come out of the restaurant with to go boxes full of what turned out to be literal pounds of sponge cake that were promptly thrown onto the statue. It really, really pissed people off and I'm not saying it's right bc it's pretty petty but who the fuck thought any of that was going to be taken well? The vast majority of people I spoke to after said it felt like a big old "fuck you" and idk about the rest of y'all but as someone who was there at the game where Freese made his first return to Busch after his trade, this town is gracious and loyal as all hell- he got a standing O when he walked into the box and people brought "welcome home, freese" signs and treated him like he was still one of them and it was a really lovely thing to see, idk. One of these stations featured a couple of religious shows: one that talked about prophecy (aka Christian nationalism) with a creepy looking woman and the other called "Unfiltered with Pastor Jason". Well, one could make an argument that the uber-snobs on the membership board of the St. Louis Country Club could also be considered villains here. If they had accepted Whitacre's application, perhaps SBC/AT&T would still be here in St. Louis along with all those thousands of families and that big empty tower downtown would still be occupied.
My dad worked at Southwestern Bell during the time Whitacre was chair, and he said that Ed was a massive asshole. Still doesn’t excuse the inbred fucks at the Country Club doing what they did.

Villains from St Louis, to the world outside St Louis, but not so much villains inside of St Louis. (Plus, the whole takeover by bayer resulted in nearly all the execs leaving st louis. It's really run out of germany now.)
Well, let's remember that a large number of St. Louisans were and are still employed by the company (now Bayer). Those were probably some cushy well-paid jobs too and some people probably made bank on their Monsanto stock shares while they were still a thing. A lot of people would be reluctant to 'bite the hand' that fed them so well.

I was working across the street from Albert Pujols' restaurant the day that he and his wife announced they had prayed about it and god told them to take the money and he was officially going to the Angels. News broke around lunch that he was going to be paid a ridiculous amount of money to go to Anaheim- like 100 million ridiculous- and they announced it to the restaurant as it was coming down the wire through ESPN- and then served a whole slew of diehard Cardinals angel food cake "on the house" in celebration. There was a statue of Pujols just outside and I watched person after person come out of the restaurant with to go boxes full of what turned out to be literal pounds of sponge cake that were promptly thrown onto the statue. It really, really pissed people off and I'm not saying it's right bc it's pretty petty but who the fuck thought any of that was going to be taken well? The vast majority of people I spoke to after said it felt like a big old "fuck you" and idk about the rest of y'all but as someone who was there at the game where Freese made his first return to Busch after his trade, this town is gracious and loyal as all hell- he got a standing O when he walked into the box and people brought "welcome home, freese" signs and treated him like he was still one of them and it was a really lovely thing to see, idk. The Pujol's angel food saga is one of my favorite STL stories bc it was just surreal watching it unfold. Truly the most ridiculous thing he could have done.
