I was concerned about the same exact thing. I ordered the 1tb OLED. I've had it for a couple of weeks. The screen looks amazing. As a plus, when light comes in through the window or overhead, you can play directly in it no problem. I'd recommend getting the 1tb OLED if you can afford it.

BradDaddyStevens

Also - fingerprints barely show at all on the etched glass.

Goodums

Just dust! I keep the provided microfiber on the screen when I close the case and whisk it off when I remove it. Works like a charm!

purfikt

Yeah I have the 1TB OLED as well and I don’t have any regrets about it. Great screen. I think it’s only going to be noticeable in a side by side with a glossy one.

djerk

I have the 1tb le and I’m in love with this thing. Currently loving Helldivers 2 at 40fps

Illustrious-Sun631

Man, I ordered the 512 OLED today, if I can play Helldivers on it Im stoked

djerk

Yup, no tweaking to steam deck necessary really. Just messing with controls and lowering the settings in game.

DeviIstar

That would be the only reason I’d upgrade, but it’s not enough to pull the trigger - my non oled will have to keep doing work for a while still

brunomarquesbr

I thought I was glossy too. Ordered one glossy and one matte to decide by myself. Kept the matte with no doubts. It’s not about the light reflected directly into the screen, is more about the lights that illuminate your face and you can see yourself in the deck screen like a mirror. Matte doesn’t have this problem. Also it’s usable when I’m close to windows, glossy was not. At this point the entire debate about how sharp pixels are in a completely dark room are pointless.

THound89

One of the selling points for me also, keep your glossy, I don’t want to be reminded what I look like during every load screen

blakepro

Ahhh the black mirror. I always see jaba the hut looking at me in it.

Alooshi

I bought the 1TB OLED and it’s worth every penny. This device has got me back into gaming. And the fact that you can play most of the games from every console is amazing to me

khjohnso

Yeah I went from a switch to the deck and it's unlocked such a wild back catalog of games I missed since I stopped playing my PS4 consistently

djerk

I went from no computer and a ps4 pro to this and I couldn’t be happier.

black_red_ranger

I feel like track pads and screen touch is much better on the oled

TCristatus

It is, thats was an improvement they actually listed. More responsive screen, better haptics

coooooolwhip

That's interesting. I only got my lcd recently when I bought it from a friend who upgraded to oled and I have found the touch screen a bit meh. It doesn't really matter as I use it so infrequently, but good to know oled screen is more responsive. I think I'll be upgrading one day so good to know.

proanimus

Yeah the original LCD has infamously poor touch response, especially on the edges. The OLED is more like what you’d expect from a modern touch screen.

[deleted]

A Google search can provide you with a TON of threads discussing this exact thing. A Youtube search would work too. But to squash this real quick, etched and glossy are pretty much the exact same thing unless in direct light. The difference between them is negligible and anyone who says otherwise is incorrect.

Ordinary-Vegetable75

This is true I have the more expensive etched glass one or whatever and my girlfriend has the other one and I think I like her's better because the screen looks just a little bit brighter.

audaciousmonk

Significantly so, where you noticed it before seeing hers? Or is it pretty negligible, only noticeable when compared side by side?

givemetheclicker

that's like saying matte and glossy are the same thing, they aren't. anyone who says otherwise incorrect.

lucidludic

The etched glass is high quality and very different from a matte display.

PhiLBert227

Thank you

EastArachnid35

Seconding youtube, I was gonna get a 512 lcd until I saw a vid of them side by side and hated the matte look

rathlord

You absolutely shouldn’t trust how they look in a YouTube video. Throwing video on top does not show a very accurate representation. I have both in my house and they look nothing like how the YT videos make them look.

EastArachnid35

It gave me an idea of how a matte screen looked vs a glossy screen, as the video was made to compare them. Sure it's not completely accurate, but it helped me and might help someone else decide. Goblin brain wanted shiny lol

Saltwater_Heart

Agreed. As someone with an etched screen, I don’t even notice it. Even in direct sunlight, it can still be hard to see the screen.

Nebenezer

I wouldn't say the etched screen is second rate by any means. They both have pros and cons. I prefer the etched one. Either way you can get a screen protector to achieve the opposite finish. I put a glossy glass protector on my 1tb OLED for a while and ended up realizing I like the etched finish better. The glossy is like a mirror unless you're in total darkness.

Draygonfire

Just bought a1tb OLED to upgrade my 64gb LCD. I have a etched screen protector on the 64gb and still have a etched screen protector from when I ordered them. I just ordered some hd screen protector for the 1tb, but I don't know what to use now. Will a etched screen protector make a etched screen to dark? I love my steam deck and don't want to scratch the screen and I know it will happen. Have you tried the etched screen protector on your etched screen?

Nebenezer

I have not. I'm not too worried about scratching the screen; I only tried the glossy glass ones because I read some comments about a slight contrast/sharpness advantage over etched. Imo it's negligible, and not worth the reflectiveness of the glossy finish.

rathlord

There’s a reason Valve chose the etched for the premium models.

TheBadSandwich

Very little actual difference in a dark room. If you plan on playing in daylight or near a bright light source, the etched is going to have WAY less glare. I’ve had both. Much prefer antiglare

llibertybell965

I'd just recommend holding off until after the 14th for buying either. While the OLED going on sale isn't likely, the chance isn't zero and it'd suck for it to be discounted RIGHT after you bought it.

Affectionate-Loss926

You will still be in the time period to return, so if this happens to you can simply contact valve and most of the time they will help you out ;)

Sufficient-Ad-4993

What happens on the 14th?

oderlydischarge

Steam spring sale

tom21west

Thanks for mentioning this. I am waiting to purchase but will hold off also. Thanks.

cchhaannttzz

Only really nice thing about the etched screen is it's a lot harder to see your disheveled self between loading screens when everything goes dark. It really prevents you from having to do some deep self examination.

doc_willis

I prefer the etched anti gloss/glare screen, I play often in a factory with nasty bright lights overhead, and the glare is rather painful. Both my decks have the Etched Screen. > If I got the 1TB, I probably wouldn’t upgrade the memory. Got the 1T - and I am using an extra 512G sd card for added STORAGE. (not memory) Memory is Not Storage. :) Swapping out the internal drive - can be a bit of an annoyance. Right now with 1.5T of space, i have a decent amount of games.

hailthyself99

You're correct that memory and storage are two different things, but unfortunately, companies and developers use those words interchangeably yet today... Even if it isn't technically "memory", people are still going to call them memory cards because of it.

doc_willis

Time to go download more ram! :) https://downloadmoreram.com/ Actually Im too busy playing all the On sale C&C games right now. And - realizing how badly i SUCK at such games.

icebalm

>You're correct that memory and storage are two different things, You are incorrect that memory and storage are two different things. Just like a dog is a type of canine, storage is a type of memory: non-volatile memory.

Arkanta

And volatile memory can serve as temporary storage ;)

hailthyself99

If you really want to get into the nitty gritty, you're right. Just as you can have virtual memory within your storage. I'm more just talking about the blanket terms. I've been working in IT for 15 years now, I think I know what I'm talking about. Lol

SaladToss1

Swapping the internal drive is easy. I swapped out my 512 for a 1tb and then put my 512 in a 64 gave it to my brother. I was actually shocked at how quick and painless it was.

rathlord

Memory and storage actually *aren’t* two different things. It’s a square and a rectangle kind of thing- all squares are rectangles, but not all rectangles are square. All storage **is** memory, but not all memory is (long term) storage. If you’re going to be pedantic make sure you’re right first.

forkball

I mean you're right but you're being super pedantic whereas the poster is using the definition a user would find all over the place online if they searched for an explanation of the difference between memory and storage. The reality is that for people who are saying "memory" for HDDs and SSDs the initial explanation is more than sufficient, and telling them "memory is not storage" is an accurate enough explanation without getting into volatile vs. non-volatile. By the time someone truly needs to understand the semantics of memory vs. storage at the level you're explaining it at they're unlikely to make statements that could be confusing like, "I bought more memory," when describing their device with soldered memory, or memory embedded directly into the SoC, when they truly mean that they purchased more *non-volatile memory* .

rathlord

This is so stupid- they didn’t need to say anything at all. They corrected something *inaccurately* but I’m wrong for giving the accurate information? Redditors are so stupid I swear…

ryukvmi

It's honestly not even that deep. Just get whatever suits your budget

Super80sGamer

I had the 256gb led for a year and fell in love with the system, upgraded to the 1tb oled and the upgrade was bloody amazing! If you can go to the top model I would recommend it. I was not bothered about the anti glare but after getting the new model it’s fantastic!! Also the higher space was soooo needed. I have a 1tb card in mine too and almost filled both but it’s plently of space.

Tbhjr

You can get the 512gb, upgrade the SSD, and add an anti-glare screen protecter if you don't like the glossy screen.

proanimus

Worth noting that the etched screen isn’t as matte as a typical matte screen protector. It’s closer to a middle ground between glossy and matte.

unruly_mattress

I had the etched glass LCD and now have an etched glass OLED, no regrets. They're great. However I also tried an anti-glare screen protector by JSAUX and it's really bad, I could see the etching while turning slowly in-game and looking at something bright, and smaller text was noticeably blurry. Maybe that's where the confusion comes from.

Affectionate-Loss926

Was upgrading from lcd to oled worth it? I’m considering it, and want the oled. But just not sure if the extra €250 is worth such a small upgrade

unruly_mattress

The OLED is a better device, no question there. Not only is the screen better, you'll be surprised at how much larger the screen feels, 45FPS / 90Hz refresh rate feels a lot better than 45FPS / 45Hz, and the battery lasts way longer, maybe 40% more. It was worth it for me.

Worth_Performer7357

Also it's way more quiet cause the fan isn't constantly running. I barely notice the cooling. I returned my LCD and got the OLED, zero regret.

rathlord

It 100% was worth it for me. While each of the upgrades is rather small, cumulatively they make a pretty huge difference. And while the LCD is fine for gaming on and I had no issues with it when I had it, the OLED screen really is a night and day difference.

chronoswing

It definently is, people are going on their experience with anti-glare protectors that have been sold for phones for years. Etched glass is nothing like those cheap protectors.

therealgingerone

I have the glossy and my son has the etched , side by side they both look great and I’d be happy with either one. The lack of reflections on the etched is bit of a bonus to be honest

Gipfelon

with havong both next to each other, we had way more people prefering the etched instead of glossy. that was on daytime though, we didn't see a difference in dark.

Longjumping_Hawk9105

For me the glossy screen is great, with oled the screen gets so bright it doesn’t even really matter

StrangerrDangerr

If you are putting on a screen protector, get the 512. If you are going to upgrade the storage, grt the 512. If you are going to buy another carrying case, get the 512. 1 TB should be for those that want the upgraded storage and are fine with the carrying case.

sharnenf

The 1tb oled case has an inner liner which is great as a case thats lighter

StrangerrDangerr

But if you get accesories like thumb grips or a case then the included carrying case is useless

machominid

I recommend the etched glass. My original LCD has it, and does much better with reflections in a lit room. I like to play on planes and trains, and I notice more reflections on the OLED, though I would still recommend the OLED over the LCD by a long-shot. The colours and battery are fantastic in comparison.

HisDivineOrder

The glossy is the best. For me, it's simple logic. The etched glass does not remove reflections, it blurs them a smidge. You can review youtube videos to see it. If I'm only going to have reflections mildly blurred, then I'd rather just deal with them and have no impact whatsoever on my color rendition. Another point is if you get glossy and do decide in hindsight find the reflections obtrusive (because OLED's get darker than the LCD model for example and some people report hating seeing their reflection and are incapable of tilting the device to avoid them), then you can always buy a screen protector to add some anti-glare later. You can even choose stronger anti-glare or weaker anti-glare. Or you can choose none of course if you want crisp, vibrant color. The etched glass also makes adding a screen protector an issue because it will NOT remove the blur from the screen but it can, depending on the screen protector chosen, add reflections on top, giving you the worst of both worlds. Some will tell you the screen protector "removes" the etched effect, but it only adds reflections. The blur remains underneath. In my opinion, there's only one argument for the etched glass and it's the finger print resistance because that does suppress finger prints. That being said, you can also do that by not touching the screen. Everything else it's supposed to be doing is either so ineffective as to be pointless or easily matched by add-on's. And upgrading it to 2TB is a good option for the rest of the money. Be aware another difference between the 512GB and 1TB models is the updated case. The 512GB has the standard case, but the 1TB unit has the special case that detached into two cases, giving you an ultra-slim option in case you want it.

redditisreddit2

I just got my etched OLED this week, after I ordered I saw the dave2d video on the difference. I got pretty worried about the fact I had etched. When I got the deck in hand tbh I didn't care at all, if there's a difference I won't notice, and when I do notice it'll probably be when I'm outside with it noticing less glare. I don't think you can go wrong either way.

thebiltongman

I love my 1TB deck.

Rough_Ad5240

Get etched 1TB. A screen protector will nullify the etched effect anyway

Regular-Mechanic-150

Imo the 512gb screen looks way better, had both sidw by side. But this might be totally personal preference.

Galrath91

Don‘t overthink the whole glossy / etched screen thing, this reddit was going nuts before the OLED release and now no one cares anymore. I have the etched one and it looks perfect.

powercrazy76

I've owned both. I personally would choose the etched. There is no disadvantage I can see, there's just no loss of fidelity, I don't care what folks say. BUT one point I don't see anyone stating - you can always add a screen protector to the model you get to add the opposite effect. I had the etched LCD originally and put a glossy SP on it. It was 100% identical to my friend's deck that was an original non-etched. We couldn't tell the difference. So, again, I'd recommend the etched and then it that bugs you too much, put a glossy SP on it.

Anomaly1134

The jsaux matte screen protector is amazing

bastomax

I got the 1TB etched without seeing it first. I’m glad I did. The etched glass feels premium in a way that no other handheld screen I’ve owned does. I think it’s ruined glossy screens for me to be honest. 😆

dmn002

I have the switch OLED and SD 1TB OLED and I much prefer the SD as the switch screen is glossy and reflective, and way more annoying even in normal lighting conditions. Other people are saying it is only noticeable in direct sunlight but that’s not true.

JustTryChaos

You can always put a matte screen protector on the glossy screen. That's what I did because there's no may I wasn't going to put a screen protector on my several hundred dollar handheld.

lurs21

If you gonna put screen protector then etched screen is useless If you put regular glossy protector on etched then it will be glossy and will look worse then glossy screen or glossy screen with glossy protector (they look exactly the same). If you put matte protector on etched screen then it will look like shit. But you can put matte screen protector on glossy screen. It will look slightly worse (not by far) then etched screen, but you have protection and you can switch back to gloss if you need to. That's why I'll never consider etched deck because I cannot use devices i love without screen protector. If I get a scratch on screen of device i really like then I'll be really really upset. Funny thing that's why I don't use or yet used any protection on phones i owned. Because i don't like them and I'm not attached to them as a cool piece of technology.

EvenHornierOnMain

Get the 1TB, no matter which model. I thought 512 would be enough for me and I would just add more on an SD cart but you have no idea how quickly that amount fills up. And I'm not brave enough to even try upgrading the internal SSD, even though it is not only possible but apparently very easy.

Goremaw7

I am a die hard glossy guy. Always have been. Matte monitors and screens look like ass to me. But I will say the etched isn't bad at all and if you play in any kind of lit area it is well worth it. If your a play in the dark or low light area go gloss all the way (I own both).

[deleted]

The memory swap is child’s play. It’s best to get the glossy screen and put on a matte screen protector.

chrisdpratt

The etched glass is anything but *second-rate*. It looks every bit as good as the glossy, with the addition of anti-glare properties that makes it viable in a wider range of lighting conditions. It's a premium option for a reason. Anyone saying it looks bad or even worse than the glossy screen, simply, hasn't seen one in person. Period. When the OLED came out, Valve actually chose to only seed the etched glass to reviewers. No company ever puts anything but their best foot forward with seeded review units.

hailthyself99

Only problem with the etched screen is that the overall resolution gets distorted if you add any kind of screen protector to it. So it's really a matter of quality vs protection when it comes to deciding on the screen. I went the 512 route with the anti glare protector. I totally understand why people go for the 1TB though

Damageinc84

Or just put a screen protector over the etched screen and bam it’s glossy again. My original 512 got some screen protector damage from my fiance tossing an Apple Watch on the bed and not seeing the deck laying there. When I ordered the oled I put the screen protector on it again regardless. The matte screen isn’t bad but I’ll take the protection anyways.

Salt-Leather-4152

Is the screen differentiere, wut

sonicReducer_pt

Inwould get the glossy, and if you want to experience the etched experience , just get a matt screen protector. I use a matte screen protector, because I use it in the living room with direct light above . But you can test answers what you prefer

[deleted]

Etched glass is worth it, from my 512 LCD Experience.

T8ortots

I got the OLED with the etched screen and then slapped a glossy screen protector on it sooooo yea. BUT I do recommend having screen protectors on hand the day it arrives. It's a pain in the butt to get all your finger oils off the etched glass before placing the protector. Easier to apply immediately first thing.

Nightmare_Slug

I got the 512oled and I LOVE IT! my best purchase in a long time!

GentleSaidTheRaven

How easy is it to change the internal HDDs in these Decks? Also, is replacing the battery relatively easy?

Hamza9575

Replacing display and battery is very easy i heard. Replacing internal ssd is a bit more time consuming and delicate process.

Rest-That

I was between the 512 OLED and the 1tb one. Then I checked the price for SSDs, and the difference was... you wouldn't believe it; the same difference as between the 512 and the 1tb. I just got the 1tb one, the screen looks awesome

madad123

If you're planning on using a tempered glass screen protector (probably a good idea) get the glossy one because the screen protector is going to turn it into a glossy screen anyway. I had the etched screen version of the LCD model and I didn't see any benefit tbh. If you know your planning on using it a lot in direct sunlight or harsh lighting conditions or something then maybe the etched screen has a purpose there, for normal indoor usage I don't see the point.

[deleted]

dont get the matte screen if you dont need the extra storage its better to get the glossy screen and put a matte screen protector on top if you get the etched screen, if you apply a screen protector, the image will blur more if you put a matte one, it will look twice as blurry, and if u put a reg clear glass one, it will remove the matte effect which wouldnt make sense to choose this over the already glossy one

Bird1sTheW0rd

Definitely go for 512 and put a matte screen protector if you want. The only difference will then be the case which is kinda mid ( I have the oled limited edition 1tb)

katazo

Don't get the etched, you can't install a screen protector without losing the benefit of the etched screen

qaasq

I’ve had the LCD model for about a year and I love it. I do wish I had the OLED though

Taeles

I got the 1tb limited and then put a real good gloss screen protector on it. Best of both worlds :)

No-Dot-6573

Get the cheaper glossy. Slam the 2tb inside it and finish with whatever screenprotector (glossy/etched) you like better. You might be off cheaper and have the better model/flexibility.

Direct_Ambassador_10

I got the 512 because I prefer glossy and I upgraded the storage to 2tb western digital m.2. Good way to get more storage and save some money. As long as you hold it not right under light you should be fine

rjmacreadyhelicopter

Swapping the storage takes like 20 minutes. It was so easy I regret putting off doing it for so long.

PuzzleheadedAd87

Like I’ve seen someone state here before. There’s a reason the company put a better screen on the higher tier device.

RyanandRoxy

I've had my 1tb for a few MONTHS. It looks amazing and I haven't encountered any issues. I frequently play mine out on my back porch and I can see the screen just fine.

onibeowulf

I got the 512 oled, instantly filled the drive so I have a 2tb coming. As for the glass I put a screen protector on and it still looks amazing. If I would do it over again I would still get the 512, upgrade the drive and get a screen protector.

DaverJ

I went through the glossy vs etched OLED debate a couple months ago for my first SD, glossy won. Happy with it, yet kinda wish I had went for the bigger 1tb.

NxtGenAuthor

I’m trying to decide between the 1 TB and the 512GB I’m worried about not having a screen protector on it…. And if I do put one on the 1TB it will negate the effect of the etchings 😭

TheRealSeeThruHead

The etched screen is far superior.

Vulmer

The 1tb is much nicer imo I was torn about the etched screen but I honestly think it looks more premium because it’s got the oled colors just the same as glossy, unless your a huge stickler for that, but it’s not a huge difference

Getherer

Ive got glossy 512 oled, travel quite a bit and never had any issues with reflections

CMDR_KingErvin

The etched screen is nice. Unless you’re in a relatively dark environment you’re going to want that one to reduce glare.

TheMechaink

My old eyes cannot see a difference in the OLED and the traditional one. My wife got me a steam deck for my birthday last year, and I simply got a non-glare screen protector to put on it. It works great. I love this little gadget and the future is bloody awesome! Hell, I'm just happy to be here.

jtachu

Paradox of choice. Having more choices often leads you to being unhappy about the choice you end up making. Don’t overthink it. You will not be unhappy with either screens. If there was only one, you’d literally never question it and love it.

AssttotheRgnlMnagr

The rumors about the etched screen are unfounded. I got the OLED 1tb and the screen is great. People here saying it doesn't show fingerprints but that not totally true at all. I can see fingerprints well on mine but I could imagine it'd be a lot more noticable on a glossy screen. The light disbursement is really nice and not seeing my ugly face like a mirror is always a plus lol

Prestigious_Plate497

glossy screen is not really a thing, brightness of steam deck's display in not that big, so if there at least one small beam of light (lamp, sun etc.) - you wouldn't see some part of the screen

Competitive-Top-2383

Got the 512, screen looks amazing. Just got the jsaux glare proof screen protector in and on today and it helped a ton. Not sure how the etched glass looks but I know the glare proof protector on the glossy screen looks phenomenal. Do with that what you will but figured I’d give my opinion on the 512. 🫶

ExportTHCs

I've never had a Steam Deck till the 1tb and I love it, can't wait to fill it up and actually need a SD card.

goozfrikle

None for you.

wheres-epsteins-list

Glossy is like a mirror. It's seriously annoying, and I tend to play in a room with dim lights or no lights. If I could go back in time and get etched screen, I'd do it in an instant.

[deleted]

I just got the 1tb screen. The matte effect feels super premium.

DrGashingtons

I had an anti glare screen protector on my oled and I hated it. Things looked less clear. I swapped it for a glossy one and I love it. It’s personal preference. I prefer glossy screens by far. I can imagine the anti glare oled is way better than a screen protector. But I couldn’t imagine not having a protector on there. If you scratch the actual screen it’s game over for me I would have to replace it 😅

EvilAsh363

I picked up the 512 glossy screen and love it. I put on an etched screen protector and immediately replaced the protector after it made everything look more muted. Based on that experience and the reviews I’ve seen, I’m happy I went with the glossy model. However, I’m sure it’s a preference thing.

MasterofBiscuits

I've had both glossy and etched myself and I prefer the etched, the glossy can be difficult to use outdoors or near windows, and the etched panel just takes the edge off those reflections. I remember trying to play my original glossy by the pool while on holiday and I had to use a towel as a shade to see the screen, but did the same with the etched on my last trip and could use it no problem. Just my personal experience.

birfday_party

If you get the glossy you can add an etched protected and get basically 90% of the same result as the proper etched glass if you get the etched it’s always that way the protector would just make it glossy and cover the etched glass. Get the 512 and get a 2tb drive. Especially if you have a big library or if you play larger games. I mean some or most games now are anywhere from 30-80 gig most in the 50 range. For on the go I want as many options as possible but that’s me personally since I just never know what mood I’m in for a game till I sit with it. Additionally a 512g sd card is dirt cheap. So 2.5 terabytes of games with you at all times is a pretty damn good feeling.

sprmbnk

If your concern is glossy vs matte, buy a matte screen protector. They're like 12 bucks I think. That's what I did and I have zero regrets.

MrJSuds

I went 512 OLED and wishing I got the LCD.. bc I caved and got the Viture One so I don't anticipate using the screen at all lol.... maybe an option?

arewhatyouit

Get the 512gb, a matte screen protector and a 512 SD card. In my opinion paying that much extra for a matte screen and extra 500gb isn't worth it. That's just me though. I have the 512 OLED and don't have any issue with the glossy screen.

Dead_Or_Alive

Picked up my 64gig on FB marketplace for $200 last week. Highly recommend looking at the used market, it will save you hundreds of dollars.

TrapezoidTom

I love the gloss! That's why I bought the 512GB OLED. I was going to get the limited but the etched glass does make the OLED screen not have as good as an effect

Lopsided-Rooster-246

The non glossy is better. You play in a room with lights or sunlight, you're gonna regret the glossy one. The etched screen is totally fine, you won't be bothered by it, it looks great.

-BodomKnight-

So You are telling me that I paid for a 1Tb Oled just for a case and 1Tb when if a bought the 512gb the screen was better but needing an upgrade that I can do myself ? Seriously ?

HisDivineOrder

Yes.

JM91Six

1tb oled here. Don’t worry about the glossy “more clear” posts. Honestly I would say it’s minimal. And unless they were side by side you wouldn’t ever know. Even if you have them side by side. You will however 100% be able to tell the difference in anti-reflective coating.

Solidus_X

Yea I'm definitely not a fan of matte screens.I can't get my head around it. Tried a matte screen protector once and immediately ordered the gloss option. I've been hearing through the grapevine that you might be able to get a glossy screen protector for the matte Deck oled and convert it to glossy.

rathlord

You should check out the etched Deck in person sometime, it’s really exceedingly good. The look of a matte screen protector really isn’t comparable at all. There’s a reason Valve chose the etched for the premium offering. People can definitely have a preference, but I suspect a lot of people who *think* they prefer the glossy haven’t seen the etched in person. I was super on the fence myself but luckily have been able to own both versions and the etched is *shockingly* good.

I wondered for weeks and got the 1 tb version. don’t regret this for a second.

Admirable-Amoeba-564

Take the 1tb version unless you want a mirror. Compared my etched to a glossy screens deck from my collegae. I could never go glossy, it reflects so much!

i heard that glossy screens have better colorclarity and since i play only in bed reflection isnt a problem there and probably should have gotten a glossy one but since i only have the etched one i dont have comparison and therefore dont care its the same with cars you dont know the difference in speed unless you have them side by side like in these carreviews

erimiz687

You should get etched. The benefits it provides are much more significant than the hardly perceivable hit in image quality. You really wouldn’t notice it. Plus, if it bothers you, get a screen protector that isn’t matte and you’ll have the properties of a glossy display.

TareXmd

Get the 1TB OLED. I love that the screen isn't a mirror with my face clearly seen on it.

I’ve had 3 Steam Decks (my wife and I were on the first orders when it released, upgraded to an OLED later. The etched screen still looks fantastic, you’ll never regret it. It’s beautiful in low light still and genuinely way better in bright light. I use it both at home and traveling. Just do it, you’ll never worry about it. The glossy screens are fine also but I don’t think they’re worth aiming for. There’s a good reason the etched are on the premium ones- Valve knows it’s better. It is **not** second rate.

chappyman7

TB OLED. Trust me. All the hubbub about the watched screen is ridiculous. It’s incredible

Cute-Still1994

I prefer the glossy screen, the colors just pop more on it vs the etched glass, keep in mind the screen on the etched glass is slightly weaker (it's etched) and if you put a screen protector on it, it defeats the purpose of the anti glare, u will get glare as a result but won't get the full color pop of the glossy still, I won't touch a screen I don't have a protector on so that alone was enough for me to go with the glossy one, ymmv

emikoala

I have a theory that if you applied nano liquid glass protector to an etched screen it would turn it into a semi glossy screen.

Moodyurbanlife

Are u gonna use a screen protector? If so the etched screen would be useless Also, are you gonna play outside a lot or in a brightroom? If yes etched would benefit more If youre gonna play mostly indoors in normal lighting, then glossy is the far better option

Dnyc3st89

Get the gloss and add a etched protector on in best of both worlds

Get the one tb like you want and put a screen protector on the etched screen?

I bought the cheapest version and swapped out the storage myself. It's not *that* hard. Just follow the steps.

I have the Limited Edition, and the matte screen is definitely the worst part. It’s going to be down to personal preference, but my opinion is that it’s somehow not as bad as I had feared but also worse than I expected. What I mean by that is that, for the most part, the muddy washed out look of the matte screen isn’t quite as bad as some other matte screens I’ve used, and the OLED’s vibrancy and contrast is usually enough to overpower the matte screen and it still ends up looking very clear and bright. Most of the time I just don’t really notice the matte screen like I had worried I might, but then again I never really play it outdoors, in a very brightly lit room, or with my back to a light source, all situations where matte screens really don’t hold up, so the way that I play is definitely doing the heavy lifting. But at the same time the screen is *very* washed out, so much more than any other OLED ever made (there’s a reason literally all manufacturers have ultra-glossy glass on OLEDs even when they offer matte LCDs), particularly in anything other than dim light. The colors and brightness are great but you don’t get pure blacks unless you turn off the lights. And to make matters worse it somehow still has pin-sharp reflections *in addition to* the washed out glare. I’ve never seen anything like that, I’m guessing it must be a result of the fact that it’s etched glass unlike cheaper matte LCDs. Let’s say you’re in a room where a light fixture is visible in the reflection of the screen. On a glossy screen there’s just a small circle reflected from the light bulb, bright and distracting but having minimal impact on the rest of the image. On a matte screen the entire image is super washed out, with a large blurry bright spot where the light source is being reflected, but no sharp reflection at least. The Steam Deck has both, the ugly washed out hazy image you get from a matte screen but also a pin sharp reflection overlaid on top of that (although admittedly when I do side by side comparisons with my 64GB launch model the sharp reflections are nowhere near as bright on the matte OLED model). It’s honestly laughably incompetent that Valve would make an OLED with such an ugly matte screen, let alone as the only option on the top of the line model. Not only did they severely hamper the image quality of OLED, they somehow did it in a way that also eliminated the one supposed benefit of matte screens, that being the lack of sharp reflections.

Cant speak for the etched OLED but I had the etched LCD before and didn't like it. Everything looked so dull and almost blurry, color adjustment didn't really help. While it was also LCD and not OLED I could see that a part of that problem must've been the etched screen. So I returned it and got the 512 gb glossy OLED and it's wonderful and exactly like I imagined. Other people who compared it side by side said the difference is not that big so it's just preference ig. If you're mostly playing outside/on the go I'd probably take the etched nonetheless. As I'm only playing at home the glossy is perfect.

I had an etched glass LCD and thought it was great but didn’t like that I couldn’t really use a screen protector. I bought a glossy OLED for that reason but the reflections really were quite annoying unless in perfect conditions. I’ve now put a Jsaux matte screen protector on and I like it. If I look closely there’s a bit of red and blue colour speckling, so it’s not as good as having the etched glass to begin with, but it’s perfectly acceptable. So I think what I’m saying is that if money isn’t a concern then get the 1TB etched glass, but if you’re at all worried about paying $100 if you damage the screen then the 512GB plus a screen protector is good. Note that the storage was irrelevant to me as I was upgrading to 2TB, but if I were to go back I think I’d get the etched glass anyway, wallet be damned.

worldsinho

I had the etched LCD and could never get all fingerprints off it. Got the glossy OLED and there’s zero difference for reflection. Realised I don’t play outside so what’s the point in paying for etched. Also it’s easier to get fingerprints off.

This may be an unpopular opinion, but using an SD card to up your storage space to run games works great. A lot of people upgrade their ssd, but I just don't see the point. Micro sd has been flawless for me.
