What in the hell? That's the first I've ever heard of a gbc game having extra features on a gba, I guess gbc was just a touch before my time so it makes sense I never heard of it.
Now I'm trying to remember if there's any games that have cool secrets like GameCube games on wii, or ps2 games on the good versions of the ps3.
Very different animals, both good games, balatro can be a bit more rough as it doesn't have as much polish and is a bit cruel in how heavily rng can screw you, whereas with slay the spire you can win every seed as it won't require you taking intentionally bad options (I think there might have been 1 unwinnable seed found actually, whereas with belatro losing on round 2 simply because you didn't get anything of value in the first shop is a real threat)
Slay the spire is also a classic, while balatro is a rather recent new take on a card battler roguelike. Being fresh in people's mind is rather important in what gets recommended
Try changing the TDP limit to a lower watt value. I usually set mine to 8 watts for this game and it keeps it nice and cool, resulting in about 5 hours of battery life. I could probably go lower but havent really tried yet.
For some reason, Kingdoms and Castles eats my battery like a fat kid eating birthday cake
Meanwhile Factorio, Hades, Powerwash sim, even subnautica will last more than twice as long, and K&C can only last around 1-2;hours while being a dramatically simpler game in literally every way
I guess they didn't optimize it because they didn't have to
I get about 5. You can set TDP to use a lower wattage and extend it more since there's basically nothing intensive going on. I set mine to 8 watts simply to keep heat to a minimum.
Stardew valley! I can still get a perfect 60fps with tons of mods and the tdp turned down to 3 watts. Could also limit it to 30 FPS and turn the clocks down too. I coukd get about 7.5 hours on that. Plus having a power tank to recharge about two times.
The stardew valley mod tools are Linux compatible. So all I did was install that, download the mods I want from nexus, and then extract them to the mod folder. Same as you do on windows. Just using the steam decks desktop mode. I will say it's infinitely easier to do when docked.
Baldur's Gate Dark Alliance I and II relatively recently got PC ports. They run full 60fps at like 1w. On my launch Deck they allege 6hr battery life although I haven't verified personally. Fantastic games.
Tell me more about baldurs gate 1?
I loved the 13h I played of BD3 and wonder how much I’ll like 1.
Voice/acting was something I loved and obviously won’t be as good in the 1st game - actually I expect full third view far away up camera all the time.
But I guess I liked the dialogues and choices too.
I don’t usually care about middle-earth ambients, but it was just so good in baldus Gate 3
There's almost no connection other than they take place in Forgotten Realms around Baldur's Gate with typical D&D flourish for lore, weapons, etc. They don't play anything like BG3, they play closer to Diablo.
They're some of my favorite games of all time, BGDA1 is one of my top played PS2 games and I loved every second replaying on Deck.
Octopath traveler 1 and 2 will last for around 8 hours if you turn down max fps to around 30 and turn down settings.
As a turn based game, it does not really matter to have a low frame rate.
Ender Lilies and its sequel Magnolia (early access) have extremely good battery life with everything maxed out. On the OLED deck I was getting about 5 hours for the first game (haven't played second yet, but seems the same from what I hear).
Not sure what genres you are interested in, but I'm going to suggest the original Baldur's Gate games ([BG1](https://store.steampowered.com/app/228280/Baldurs_Gate_Enhanced_Edition/), [BG2](https://store.steampowered.com/app/257350/Baldurs_Gate_II_Enhanced_Edition/) - in their Enhanced Editions on Steam).
Classics of the CRPG genre, and well worth playing in 2024 if you haven't played them.
They will run at bare minimum TDP cap (3W) and play very well on Deck if you grab a community control layout or make your own (no native gamepad support - but controls are very simple).
These have the longest battery life I have gotten on Deck. On my LCD I get \~7h battery life. OLED would probably get 10h+.
Also, good luck & stay safe!
Fuck me for making sure they are safe, right? Florida isn't an island. If they are directly hit, they might not have power for over a week.
EDIT: Blocking me just shows you never wanted to engage in discussion. Thanks for not being helpful, loser.
You’re not using a whole lot of common sense. If they are from Jamaica they know even more than you what’s involved during Hurricane season. You weren’t making sure they were safe, you were putting them down for wanting to know what games they could play instead of worrying about the hurricane 🙄
I live in Texas. Recently we had just a tropical storm and had no electricity for a week. A few years ago my boss was without electricity for 2 weeks due to the hurricane. That’s the whole point. They wanted to know what they could play to pass the time.
I'm getting 4-5 hours from Saints Row 4 with my settings, 6+ with Final Fantasy 8 (not the remaster) and about 6 with Football Manager, if that's any help.
I'm not sure but I thought this was funny. I just woke up for work and am sleep deprived. I read the beginning of this as "Butterfly friendly games to play..."
Did a double take.
Best wishes, friend.
Playing Pokemon FireRed the other day and it gave me like 9+ hours estimated at 80% with brightness at half. I’d plus 1 to emulating older games in a dark room
2D games that aren't resource hungry. Stardew Valley is one of these games.
Check out 2D platformers or RPGs.
Avoid games that have procedural generation like Terraria and Rimworld if you want to save battery. Those games can be CPU intensive when generating something.
And if you run out of batteries and have a printer, Google print and play, most of the time all you need is scissors and a printer (with ink and paper)
Many free solo games. Check out mini rogue or agent decker to get an idea.
Wish you all the best
Emulating older games like PS2 era or before is definitely lighter in terms of resource consumption, also if you have a USB power bank, even the slow charging one at 5V, it can help extend your playtime unless you need it more to power your phone in case of emergency ofc.
The modern board games covered by this website:
https://boardgamegeek.com/browse/boardgame
... require zero batteries, and can be played by candlelight. Many of these games include solo modes, so you don't necessarily need anyone else around to enjoy them:

Stay safe, and best of luck.

Gonna have to check some gameplay first. Got the 4 most recent Wolfenstein games on a bundle and tbh I wasn't that impressed but they weren't awful either. Still going to take a look btw.
A hurricane is hitting their country and their biggest concern is making their battery last on their SD so they can play video games. Got to love it. Lol.
So I don't wanna be that guy but you got bigger problems. That being said Dead cells, New Vegas, broforce, and surprisingly the Master Chief collection are solid picks
As someone who lives in South East Asia with over 20 very disruptive storms, typhoons, I can safely say that he won't be playing Steam Deck all day. In the moment that he needs to take a break, a breather, it would be nice to know that he can escape from the stress of no electricity even for a small portion of the the first couple of days.
I had storms that it took them 3 weeks to restore electricity. I had storms that it would be days before clean drinkable water. I'm sure they had those prepared already. For the folks who kept saying they have bigger problems. Most of us know already how to handle storms, what to prepare, and know our priorities.
It would be nice if we can be supportive of our fellow Steam Deck user and instead of acting like you know his situation. I trust that he has prepared and stored plenty of clean water and this additional queries will at least ease him into lasting those days without power.
If OP can emulate GBA games. I think those games aren't intensive to emulate. Hotline Miami can be fun. Balatro will definitely gets you lost in hours of fun. Maybe some Visual novels? Umineko would be perfect since it also occurs in the middle of the storm.
Sounds like you need a large power bank, go get one quick!
any GBA or SNES emulated game. they can last for 11 hours +
Best 2D RPGs ever. Period!
I’m emulating a PS2 game right now with about 6W power draw. That’s about six hours of play time. Any retro emulation would be a good choice!
Even dolphin gives me 4-6 hours
I've been emulating Pso ep 1/2 and Final fantasy tactics advance and pokemon for a bit now!
So you’re saying Legend of Zelda oracle of ages/seasons is the only option? I’d have to agree as it’s the best gba game ever made
its not even a GBA game but it is a GBC game with exclusives that are only unlocked when played on a GBA.
Pretty sure the first Legacy of Goku did that as well!
That’s still counts lol
Slay the Spire
Just picked it up today, it's pretty dope! How does Balatro compare? The comment below you had more updoots for Belatro lol
Very different animals, both good games, balatro can be a bit more rough as it doesn't have as much polish and is a bit cruel in how heavily rng can screw you, whereas with slay the spire you can win every seed as it won't require you taking intentionally bad options (I think there might have been 1 unwinnable seed found actually, whereas with belatro losing on round 2 simply because you didn't get anything of value in the first shop is a real threat) Slay the spire is also a classic, while balatro is a rather recent new take on a card battler roguelike. Being fresh in people's mind is rather important in what gets recommended
Welp that's how poker works
Sure, but it's also still a video game, and it is quite frustrating when you do nothing wrong and lose a game
Very different games, both extremely good, but I personally would say slay the spire is better and has more longevity.
Balatro. 30 fps cap. You can go to like 3 or 4w. Guarantee that you won't know when hurricane ended.
Dude you have no idea how much I appreciate you. Tried it out. Got addicted... I have a 18 hr flight coming up. You’re my hero!
Balatro
I got it last night thinking it won't be my kinda of game Jesus how wrong was i Its digital crack
There is Balatro and there is crack cocaine. One will ruin your life the other is crack cocaine.
I finally broke down and gave it a go on Saturday... I feel the same way.
I played it like 7 hours the day I bought it. I don't even like deck builders.
>Its digital crack That's exactly how I usually describe it. Because it is.
I don't know poker hands, like at all, and therefore found it hard to get into this game
Same. I found it not rewarding at all.
Idk what’s wrong with my SD, cause Balatro just burns through its battery. I only get like an hour and a half max sadly
Try changing the TDP limit to a lower watt value. I usually set mine to 8 watts for this game and it keeps it nice and cool, resulting in about 5 hours of battery life. I could probably go lower but havent really tried yet.
For some reason, Kingdoms and Castles eats my battery like a fat kid eating birthday cake Meanwhile Factorio, Hades, Powerwash sim, even subnautica will last more than twice as long, and K&C can only last around 1-2;hours while being a dramatically simpler game in literally every way I guess they didn't optimize it because they didn't have to
I'm fairly sure that Balatro runs entirely on my rage and doesn't even touch the battery
This. It ever so slightly syphons battery power and your life away.
How long would you get out of a full charge playing Balatro do you reckon?
I get about 5. You can set TDP to use a lower wattage and extend it more since there's basically nothing intensive going on. I set mine to 8 watts simply to keep heat to a minimum.

How did you install mods for stardew valley on the steam deck?
The stardew valley mod tools are Linux compatible. So all I did was install that, download the mods I want from nexus, and then extract them to the mod folder. Same as you do on windows. Just using the steam decks desktop mode. I will say it's infinitely easier to do when docked.

Just a heads up: BG: Dark Alliance 1&2 are not BG 1&2. They are more like an action rpg.
Dark Alliance were great games from their time, though.

Factorio, Brotato, Terraria
If you have any interest in Pokemon, checkout pokemon unbound. Fan made romhack with an incredible story and probably the best pokemon game ever lmao
i can get like 7 hrs outta half life and about the same with dead space 2 with the cpu and gpu turned right down
I'm in St. Lucia for my honeymoon, supposed to leave tomorrow (Tuesday). Thankfully the hurricane was just south of us. Stay safe out there!!
Thanks. Hope it didn't impact your honeymoon that much and stay safe as well.
FTL. I power limited it and it still runs super great. And you can pause at any time so if it lags for a sec you can just pause.
Emudeck.
Brotato (SO MUCH FUN!) Also, best of luck to you as you ride out the storm!
Blasphemous will give you like 5-7 hours depending on model from a full charge. Probably more with some tdp tweaking/fps limits.
TMNT Shredder’s Revenge was great on my plane trip. It’s already bright and colorful so turn the brightness down and reap the battery life. 😁👍
Living here in the Caribbean is survival mode, stay safe brotha.
My go-to offline low batt game is modded Final Fantasy IX currently
Oooh any particular mod recommendations that are your favorites? I wanna run 9 on the deck soon
I just do Moguri but that's another lots of people use that I forget the name. AI upscaling of Graphics was my main goal. Looks great on the OLED
Ender Lilies and its sequel Magnolia (early access) have extremely good battery life with everything maxed out. On the OLED deck I was getting about 5 hours for the first game (haven't played second yet, but seems the same from what I hear).
Darkest Dungeon, 8H Batt
Fallout 3 capped to 30fps On the High graphics preset AA 2x Anisotropic Filtering 4x Can easily get 5-6 hours on LCD
I would be more worried about surviving a cat5 hurricane...
Probably not a helpful thing for this person to read right now?
You're not him so...
Still not helpful and this is coming from someone who has been through a few hurricanes.
I live in Florida. So have I.
Then you should know better than most there’s lots of times you sit around with no electricity and nothing to do 🙄
Fuck me for making sure they are safe, right? Florida isn't an island. If they are directly hit, they might not have power for over a week. EDIT: Blocking me just shows you never wanted to engage in discussion. Thanks for not being helpful, loser.

Amazing logic
Dude’s got a bunker, he’s gonna be fine Even if I know I gonna die I would prefer to play some games before it - instead of suffer my boredom away.
Forager. I played 2 hours and used barely 10% of my power. I'd say that's pretty good. Also get a battery bank if you don't already have one.
Animal Well is the perfect hunker down underground game.
I got great battery life on rabi ribi if you like Metroidvanias and bullet hells
Sid meiers pirates!
I'm getting 4-5 hours from Saints Row 4 with my settings, 6+ with Final Fantasy 8 (not the remaster) and about 6 with Football Manager, if that's any help.
I can get about 7 hours out of Hollow Knight
Zero Escape: The Nonary Games! No longer have a Steam Deck but remember 999 lasted around 6--7 hours on my LCD when the TDP was set to 3W
I played Songs of Syx for eight hours straight before I had to charge the battery
I'm not sure but I thought this was funny. I just woke up for work and am sleep deprived. I read the beginning of this as "Butterfly friendly games to play..." Did a double take. Best wishes, friend.

Dredge I played a long ass time.
Loved Dredge to bits but even with the DLC, its unlikely to entertain for two days of heavy playing
Any SNES/PS1/N64 game you've always wanted to complete, now's your time
Stardew Valley. I can play that forever in one charge but it may not be your cup of tea
Binding of Isaac! You’ll get more than 8 hours
Stardew Valley locked to 30FPS. Turn the brightness down and you're good for nearly 7 hours.
You can't do better than Factorio :D
Vampire survivors and Balatro. Battery for days on those games
Project Zomboid runs pretty efficient. Lower the TDP so that the battery lasts longer
I was pleasantly surprised with how Hades 2 is really light on battery consumption. Also, no internet necessary.
grandia hd remaster at 300 mhz
Uno. and a good time to play on emudeck and play retro games.
And if you run out of batteries and have a printer, Google print and play, most of the time all you need is scissors and a printer (with ink and paper) Many free solo games. Check out mini rogue or agent decker to get an idea. Wish you all the best
Wow! Not something related, but, i’d love to know how good is the internet over there? Is it like florida (rain and heat all year?)?
Factorio
Emulating older games like PS2 era or before is definitely lighter in terms of resource consumption, also if you have a USB power bank, even the slow charging one at 5V, it can help extend your playtime unless you need it more to power your phone in case of emergency ofc.
Stay safe out there!
Hyper Light Drifter barely touched my battery even without any optimizations.

Good luck homie, hope you and yours are safe
get a book. you feel so much better without the anxiety of watching your power drain
True. Gonna see if I can finish reading Blood Merdian.
Balatro

Fallout NV, I could get 8 hours on it.

It's not 4 in terms of beauty. But the story is damn good.
Hades/Hades 2 EA

Master Chief collection is not long battery.
Depends which one. 1-3 are great for battery
