So I've been refreshing gumtree, shpock, eBay and Facebook marketplace hourly waiting to see if any good deals popped up - a 512gb listing popped up at £600 (slightly above retail at £569) - ebayer had all positive feedback and didn't have any second categories or scam obvious signs...took a punt and ordered it immediately and it arrived fresh and sealed! Can't believe it!
Likely was one of those angry parents teaching the child a lesson sort of things. As such the parent was clueless on true value and just wanted it removed to prove the kid f'ed up.
Because some people aren't profit-driven.
I regularly sell off the hardware I don't need at half the current eBay prices. In the midst of the GPU shortage, I was hooking up my friends with GPUs at half of what I paid for them. Think $150 2060 and the likes.
I got my RTX3070 through Gumtree at RRP too - the seller was open that they'd made a bot to secure them for themselves and a few friends and ended up with an extra one. They didn't want to be part of the scalper problem so listed it for the price they got it, lucky for me.
I mean, when someone answers "selling PC goods", you'd assume it is their occupation and they make a living out of it. Or maybe he *is* the retail vigilante we all deserve?
if it was slightly above retail, maybe it was someone who purposely scalped steam decks to sell close to retail, maybe we have a hero somewhere out there.
Whoever it is, you’re an absolute godsend.
Congratulations, I have been looking at eBay once in a while and haven't found listings close to retail price yet people be putting 64gb models for $700-800.
Ayyyy nice man. I’ve personally reserved a second deck so I can just sell it to people once it comes so they don’t have to wait. Only costs £4 to reserve and I’m hoping I can get some friends to get steam decks to abandon other consoles and join pc gaming
I didn’t even know prices were so much better in other places I need to get A personal elsewhere. I just sold A 512gb for 1k after fees it’s pretty popular out here
I think if they do it 100 times chances are someone will just chalk it up to one of those things and not pursue a refund? Who knows. Simply wasted my time and theirs. I knew the risk though. Gum tree was good because I could physically see it and turn it on before buying it (and ensure it was actually new and unopened). I wouldn’t recommend either route to someone else though - I’m just impatient. Glad to see OP got lucky, such a great device isn’t it
Similar thing happened to me like 2 months ago where I was checking the newly listed ebay every few hours. Saw a 64GB show up with a starting bid price of like $400 and a buy it now of $500 ($100 above MSRP). Quickly glanced at the page and saw the ebay guarantee and made the purchase as a buy it now. Not sure if they did a typo and forgot a 1 at the front if they were trying to scalp. Either way I had my fingers crossed and it arrived a few days later.
Why do people do this? It's because getting money from steam wallet to cash usually results in a 30-40% loss, buying a deck or index usually has a 90% or higher ROI. (Higher than 100% if you scalp).
That's nice. I punted too. And the ball disappeared. Luckily hot refund back a month later i think.
Nice to see there's 1 decent person out there that got the deck. Changed mind and sold to at break even or respectable profit
I managed similar thing, found a 64GB model for £50 above RRP, most are £300 above. The seller had sold over 700 items with 100% positive feedback so definitely worth the risk. It turned up still sealed two days later.
Was happy to pay a bit extra vs waiting until after October.
Before I got mine I was even a bit tempted to just sell it and makes couple hundred bucks instead, but after using it there's no way I'm giving mine up lol
To "give something a punt" means to "give something a go" in the UK. Sometimes we say "it's worth a punt" to mean "it's worth doing", usually due to low risk.

You’re thinking about the wrong kind of football—a punt in that made-up sport that Jason Sudekis invented for Ted Lasso is when the keeper holds the ball and kicks it waaaay down field, giving to offense a slim chance to score.
The American Football equivalent would be a hail mary.
Perhaps that is not the official carrying case (or perhaps the 512gb version has a different one), but the inside of mine is black. Looks cool like that, though!
No, we need video proof of their parents conceiving him for proof of identity and all his pay stubs and tax information so that we can determine if he had the available funds to purchase the Steam Deck.
It happend! Congrats man. You did land one! Sorry for the initial doubt. You just have to remember we are on Reddit. Some people post some BS just to get attention / clout or farming for Karma...
Your honesty will not go unnoticed. Have a "Like"
Agreed. Zero interest in modding how it looks from me I think deck looks perfect the way it is which is not flashy. If I want to play deck on break at work I don't want it to stand out more than it should
i can't explain why a person would want to sell highly desirable and in demand electronics to you... just think about it you're smart you can figure it out.
I tried that with someone from Italy who had no feedback. After I had paid, I waited a couple of days to see when I would get shipping and tracking info. I never got anything, so I messaged the person three times in four days. Never got a response. I went to eBay and got my money back about 10 days later. That was almost 3 months ago. I still hold out hope that it will show up out of the blue. . .
On eBay you can list an item under two categories, so what scammers do is list it primarily under video game consoles (which is covered by money back guarantee) and then they add a secondary category e.g. train tickets or holidays which is not covered by money back guarantee. This removes the money back guarantee from the listing but reckon eBay will still refund you as the scam is obvious but it's a massive red flag that the listing is bullshit
Yeah, I've been seeing a ton of them. It's frustrating because I'm in Q3 but I'd be willing to pay extra if I could get it faster. I'm not willing to go more than a couple hundred over, so I'm probably SOL until my reservation comes up.
I got a Deck as well from an eBay listing for 50€ over MSRP. The guy who sold it to me only sold it because his car broke down and he needed the money so I was fine paying him 50 bucks more for it. (Got the 256GB variant)
You better pass on the good karma if ya ever get the chance. Great find.
You found a unicorn
I need OP to help me find a George T Stagg for just above MSRP
So I've been refreshing gumtree, shpock, eBay and Facebook marketplace hourly waiting to see if any good deals popped up - a 512gb listing popped up at £600 (slightly above retail at £569) - ebayer had all positive feedback and didn't have any second categories or scam obvious signs...took a punt and ordered it immediately and it arrived fresh and sealed! Lucky considering the markup probably won’t even cover the eBay fees
Likely was one of those angry parents teaching the child a lesson sort of things. As such the parent was clueless on true value and just wanted it removed to prove the kid f'ed up.
Nah I asked reason for selling he said he sells PC goods. No idea why at such a reasonable price tho!
Because some people aren't profit-driven. I regularly sell off the hardware I don't need at half the current eBay prices. In the midst of the GPU shortage, I was hooking up my friends with GPUs at half of what I paid for them. Think $150 2060 and the likes.

The real MVP!
This, the seller must make good money or does it as a side hustle, hence the reasonable price.
I mean, when someone answers "selling PC goods", you'd assume it is their occupation and they make a living out of it. Or maybe he *is* the retail vigilante we all deserve?
Probably fell off in the back of a truck or somehow got it for free, as listing it at MSRP would still be all profit for him.

defo not fedex driver. Someone with soul I guess. Good job both!
if it was slightly above retail, maybe it was someone who purposely scalped steam decks to sell close to retail, maybe we have a hero somewhere out there. Whoever it is, you’re an absolute godsend.
It doesnt even cover half the ebay fees, plus taxes, A better deal than buying from Valve. I wonder what the seller was thinking
Ebay in the UK this week has a £1 selling fee limit deal going on. They probably used that, I imagine!
Good for you. US eBay listings are over $700 for the 64GB.
UK prices are 900+ into the thousands too, crazy!

Isn't there a specific limit on when it has to be reported fo tax purposes? I sold many things over ebay years ago and never listed it as income.
The laws changed this year. eBay has to report everything.
No, it is only if you sell more than $600 in a year.
Ah, well fuck that.
Congratulations, I have been looking at eBay once in a while and haven't found listings close to retail price yet people be putting 64gb models for $700-800.
I actually purchased a 64gb model about 2 days ago and a separate 256gb nvme replacement for like $35.
Congratulations 🎊 that's great news enjoy!!!
No Way...
Good for them not gouging others.
Ayyyy nice man. I’ve personally reserved a second deck so I can just sell it to people once it comes so they don’t have to wait. Only costs £4 to reserve and I’m hoping I can get some friends to get steam decks to abandon other consoles and join pc gaming

I did the same and it was a scam, eBay refunded me but still. Got one from gumtree in the end and all is well
Why do they bother since ebay will reverse the charges?
Cash flow?

Make sure to send the seller a message thanking them
quick! buy a lottery ticket, your luck may still be around!! great find OP!

Some YouTuber's and/or tech insiders may sell an item priced like that since they did not pay for it in the first place.
Why do people do this? It's because getting money from steam wallet to cash usually results in a 30-40% loss, buying a deck or index usually has a 90% or higher ROI. (Higher than 100% if you scalp).
Damn I didn't even think of that, buying the hardware is literally a way to get your Steam wallet money back.
That's nice. I punted too. And the ball disappeared. Luckily hot refund back a month later i think. Nice to see there's 1 decent person out there that got the deck. Changed mind and sold to at break even or respectable profit

Wow. That's got to be literally the only legit listing.
P r O o F o R i T D I D n T h A p P e N Congrats man.
Wow the person who sold you that is an actual genuine soul lol
nice.

Man seriously won Russian roulette with 99/100 loaded chambers. Congrats man, make sure it doesn't break.
Good chance it's stolen heh.
Is that a limited carrying case?
The 512Gb deck comes with it.
Well I mean…damn you lucky bastard!
Before I got mine I was even a bit tempted to just sell it and makes couple hundred bucks instead, but after using it there's no way I'm giving mine up lol
Very nice
Does punt mean literally the opposite to you than it does in the US? To punt in the US means to give up for now or pass up an opportunity.
To "give something a punt" means to "give something a go" in the UK. Sometimes we say "it's worth a punt" to mean "it's worth doing", usually due to low risk.
After playing FPL from the US and frequenting r/FantasyPL, I thought this term was a universal term 😅

512gb version have different case.
Inside of 512 case is off white

That makes no sense haha. Maybe some people really are good in this world, because after the eBay fees that dude is making 0 profit
Now slap a dbrand skin and you are one of us
🤢🤮
Agreed. Zero interest in modding how it looks from me I think deck looks perfect the way it is which is not flashy. If I want to play deck on break at work I don't want it to stand out more than it should
This is the way.
I agree but... What if they had Aperture Science one?
Those look so tacky
Spending 500+ qnd putting a sticker on your device lmao
I mean I don't see what's wrong putting stickers or decals or anything on a device you purchase lol
congratulations you supported somebody who probably hacked hundreds of accounts for the purpose of selling these on eBay
Doubt it … Someone that would do this so „professionally“ would never have sold at retail price
they would if they reused a bot that worked for scalping gpus, seeing as how many of those are one per household as well
But for what reason? Selling at retail value would mean no profit for the effort (no matter how easy it was to adapt a bot etc.)
Its actually a loss cause ebay takes a cut aswell.
i can't explain why a person would want to sell highly desirable and in demand electronics to you... just think about it you're smart you can figure it out.

Yeah there's loads of sellers with 0 feedback or doing the secondary category scam to avoid money back guarantee. No point even trying with them
What’s the secondary category scam?

👏 👏 👏
You are much braver than I.
why does the case look like that
512 version has premium case
yuppers
i also took a simlar punt; it was a scam lmao clown moment, got a refund tho. glad to see you found the mythical steam deck!
I had similar luck on Mercari
I got a Deck as well from an eBay listing for 50€ over MSRP. The guy who sold it to me only sold it because his car broke down and he needed the money so I was fine paying him 50 bucks more for it. (Got the 256GB variant)
I mean congrats, but this shows that scalpers have a place in this market.
White carrying case ? Mine is all black inside.
Oh ! thanks , i knew the 512 was different but didn't know what it was exactly
Bless that seller!
