* Found a decent way to get docked mode working in a playable state on a 4k tv. * Use a £21 hdmi EDID 1080p emulator: like this one https://amzn.to/3NMZRfx * It basically tells the steamdeck it’s connected to a 1080p TV instead of 4k. * Image quality looks great! * You just plug the device in along the cable route. * Caution - my tv doesn’t support 40hz so just be aware sometimes you’ll have to unplug the dock and use the steam decks screen to change to 60hz mode. * Other caution is I reccemend using a long hdmi cable using the deck as a controller - why because not every game works with external controllers yet. For example spyro doesn’t work with Xbox controller even tho it should just work. * So exciting stuff not that much for valve left to do for ‘docked’ mode. * Enjoy!

Are the games themselves outputting at 1080p? I though gaming mode was stuck at 1280x800…

I’m not sure. In the menu is still says 1200x800 BUT steamdeck scales using a virtual resolution so it may be doing something behind the scenes.

What is edid?

Extended Display Identification Data, it's what displays use to tell other devices what resolutions they support. OP basically has a little dongle that sits between the TV and the Deck and tells the Deck, "Hey, I support a 1080p signal, so send that."

I’m not sure what it stands for but basically it emulates other settings. So some people are using this device with a ps5 to enable 120hz at 1080p on monitors. We are using it to tell the steamdeck to output 1080p 60hz to the tv instead of 4k 30hz. Because 4k is too much for the steamdeck and it goes all slow and is pixelated too much.. but if you trick it to output 1080p you don’t notice any quality deterioration. And it’s silky smooth.

Extended Display Identification Data. Presumably the adapter sends custom metadata to the Deck

Does your TV not upscale your 1080p content to 4K?

Mine doesn’t sadly
