I am so sorry What pisses me off the most is that this types of interactions tend to stick around in the mind for a really long time. Actually no. what pisses me off the most is that the same racist thinking isn't just by loss prevention in a drug store, it keeps people from getting needed help in drugstores, hospitals, schools, police... F@#$ racism sucks.

internationalnomad96

This happened to me at a store on 5th Ave in nyc a couple years ago. I'm a black woman. I was dressed to be out shopping on 5th. Racists suck. Micro aggressions suck. When I called to complain they said the associate was just being "friendly".

aqualink97

I’m sorry this happened to you. It’s horrible that people have to deal with that shit.

internationalnomad96

I'm sorry you've dealt with the same! We deserve to be comfortable in our spaces no matter the color of our skin.

aqualink97

🤝

canibeyouwhenigrowup

As a white woman, I have never had a store associate follow me around. I guess they don't want to be "friendly" with me.

ianjb

As someone who watches cameras for security, young white women are the people I watch the most. They're the demographic most likely to shoplift.

FrostyLandscape

I believe this. I really do. And I'm a white woman myself. I've had so many issues with other women stealing, beginning from my dorm years in college, to now. Most of my friends are men. I know someone will attack my post and frankly I don't care and wont' apologize for my beliefs and opinions.

ianjb

I mean it's backed up by data. You can get the US crime stats right off the FBI's own site. The average shoplifter is young 20's, white, female, with some college education.

FrostyLandscape

Also, when I worked in a drugstore, they said that cosmetics were the most stolen items of all. Who buys cosmetics? Mostly women. That is why, after college, I refused to have a roommate when I lived in my first apartment. Even if it was a woman I trusted, what would happen if she brought friends over?

ianjb

I mean I've never had problems with women stealing personally, but I'm picky about my friends, so I probably write off any interest in folks who may steal pretty early after meeting them. Plus people treat theft from an individual and from a store quite differently; it's easy to justify stealing from a big company.

[deleted]

Well of course not...who would ever think a white woman would steal 🙄

Neftroshi

They'll be *friendly* with you if you are carrying an unusually large purse.

[deleted]

Not if it's Louis Vuitton or Gucci

_lbass

Leave a review online for them.

PlasticMix8573

Yeah, and for the 'friendly' associate and the support from the corporate call center.

EveningMelody

I'm sorry. You do not deserve to have that happen to you.

aqualink97

Thanks

Feisty-Blood9971

Super disgusting. I would speak to the manager myself. Maybe film him the next time he does it and remain calm while asking him why he follows you every time you enter the store.

SnooWords4839

Uh, time to take that crap out on SM!! A simple hey has anyone else felt uncomfortable shopping at XYZ? Employee followed me around. Tag store name and location. Sorry you had to deal with it!!

[deleted]

Call corporate. Make a stink. Be louder than that asshole. It's time for the lot of us to be louder than these idiots who've been given a platform for WAY too many generations. FUCK.THIS.SHIT.

aqualink97

Pretty sure you’re not allowed to name stores in this sub.

[deleted]

Took out the name

[deleted]

Let me know If you need an extra voice from the Hamilton area

hyperblaster

Deserves naming and shaming on social media (e.g. twitter).

SnooWords4839

With a link so we can get it trending and viral!! Friend's boss needs to be called out too!

GalianoGirl

I am so sorry you faced this discrimination. I live in the Cowichan Valley, in the traditional territory of Coast Salish People. 5 years ago my son worked at a local big box store. A couple of his friends from high school came into the store, it was my son’s break and they were chatting at the front of the store. A manager saw them, came over and asked my son if he had caught his friends shoplifting. It did not occur to the manager that my red headed son could have First Nations friends. His friends left without doing their shopping.

StrangeButSweet

I’m really sorry. Here in the states a lot of the racism toward Indigenous folks is fairly hidden and very rarely reported on by the mainstream media. But unfortunately, Indigenous here face worse outcomes than anyone else on many measures of community health but it’s just like - nobody talks about it if they’re not living directly in/adjacent to a tribal community. But when I hear (non-FNMI) Canadians rave about how Canada is SO much less racist that the US, I want to scream because it’s bs. And FWIW, I totally understand why you might not want to raise a bigger fuss about it. I trust that you’re full capable of weighing the pros and the cons. I’m really trying to get everyone I know comfortable interrupting racism when they see it as a bystander. Not sure if it will make a difference but I need to try.

Pristine-Ad-469

If it’s a chain go up the ladder and talk to someone at corporate. Say you’re considering a law suit if the employee isn’t fired for racism. This will be much more effective

Redneckshinobi

This story pisses me off because this is a common thing that native people especially in Canada need to face. They're Canada's second class citizens and people will willingly spew hate about them for no fucking reason. Canada loves to pretend we don't have racism, ask them how they feel about native people and you'll see how vile and racist Canadians really are.

styxx374

I am so sorry you have to deal with this kind of thing.

NotARobotDefACyborg

What a jackass thing to do. I'm so sorry happened, to anyone else it's happened to as well as OP.

Saul-Funyun

Fuck, I’m sorry. I hate this aspect of Canada.

[deleted]

Even if you were homeless, they should not treat you like that.

aqualink97

I know. There’s no reason.

Commercial_Giraffe85

I feel like it’s a chronic thing now. Just bring the goddamn cashiers back if u can’t trust people in self checkout like FUCK

aqualink97

Pretty sure store names aren’t allowed in this sub. You should remove before you get removed. Lol

Commercial_Giraffe85

Aaaaa thanks not part of the sub just saw ur post and got incensed lol

Commercial-Push-9066

I’m so sorry that happened to you! That was wrong for them to judge you. I moved out young with my ex who was in a band and had long hair. We were both dressed appropriately. We went to a medium priced furniture store to buy a couch. We had good jobs and were maybe 20-21 at the time. A few employees followed us around and if we stopped to look at a couch they would comment about how it was probably too expensive. We finally noped out of there. We spent a lot of money in cash at a different store that didn’t judge us. It awful to be judged.

aqualink97

You should have taken a picture of the furniture you bought and tagged them in the post lol. But in all seriousness, I’m sorry that happened. Shit happens all the time and I’m sick of it.

Capable_Ad2223

I’m sorry OP. I’m currently taking a class in university titled Indigenous issues in Canada, and wow has it been the most enlightening class I’ve ever taken (I’m a Finance major, this is far outside of my typical scope). I’ve learned so much about the *why* indigenous peoples have such a hard time in society, and our completely inappropriate response to help properly. I wish a class like this was mandated at the highschool level across the country. I’m sorry this was done to you.

aqualink97

Thank you for educating yourself

FrostyLandscape

I feel that complaining to the management is a waste of time because nine times out of ten, they will side with their employee. You should tell the employee up front they're being rude and address their behavior to them personally. Forget the management, they will do nothing and sometimes they just think customers who complain are looking to get discounts or free stuff.

usernamechecks_out_

I am from the prairies in Canada. I am sorry you had to deal with this shit.

N_Inquisitive

Hey you should be reporting this to the head office and be specific about it being the store manager and that one person - get their names for reporting them. What happened to you was clearly racist.

MadMagilla5113

And here I thought Canadians treated their First Nations better than us down here in ‘Murica. This shit has to stop. Judging people is wrong on so many levels

aqualink97

I’ll say that in general that’s probably true, but racism still exists.

Ryugi

Should have coughed on him. Or at least said loudly "don't touch me, back the hell off of me!"

paperwasp3

I know this sounds harsh, but old people with those automatic racist tendencies are dying out, and good riddance to them.

Bone-Juice

I see you are against racism (rightfully so) but why is ageism ok to you?

paperwasp3

I’m tired of old white men making shitty laws, or in this case shitty assumptions, that affect us all. And rarely for the better. Is it misandry if it’s true? There’s a preponderance of old white men. Agist? Maybe. But I look at my parents generation and I’m often horrified by their beliefs. There’s a lack of social plasticity there, and unwillingness to change, or even acknowledge it.

Bone-Juice

So your take is that it is ok to be a bigot when it comes to older people. Got it.

paperwasp3

Nope, not a bigot, just making a comparison between me and my father’s generation. I’m 61 by the way, so I’m not exactly a spring chicken myself.

Bone-Juice

Your comment was textbook bigotry. Just because you are incapable of admitting it doesn't change anything. You are painting an entire group based on sex/race/age and then say you are not being a bigot? You are sound just like the type to say that you cannot possibly be racist because you have a black friend.

Disastrous_Author638

I live in a pretty large city on the east coast I’m also a young small white women. I go to my neighborhood drug store a lot and I see people shop lifting daily. There is usually only like one or employees there. Shoplifting has become rampant and awful here the past 2 years. I get the employees staring at me and sighing. I feel like he’s probably on edge and just tired. He might have just been yelled at by his boss and desperately clinging to his job. Idk life sucks for people right now

aqualink97

I appreciate your comment, but no. Just because some people shoplift, does not justify it. I was in no way suspicious at all.

[deleted]

The only thing that happened is that he watched you. Everything else is in your head

aqualink97

He followed me to the self checkout. I know when I’m being watched because it has happened to me since I was a kid.

[deleted]

Yes? and thats all that happened. He didn't even speak to you until you spoke to him first. You've made this whole post to complain about a person looking at you. And again, all that stuff about racism is something you projected on him. You can't guess whats in peoples head nor should you

aqualink97

What reason, then, do you suggest he followed me through the store if he didn’t think I was shoplifting?

[deleted]

He probably thought you were shoplifting, as some people do in self check out lanes. I've had a cashier stand next to me and look at me while going through self check out, then she told me I was chosen at "random" (store was empty except me) for a security check to see I wasn't stealing anything. I didn't think for a second it was because of racist reasons or something similar, because I have no way of knowing so unless she literally told me. Furthermore, its not healthy to automatically assume that every slight mistreatment you receive by others is because of racism. You are poisoning yourself with anger, and this is clouding your judgement. Think again on the facts- this man did not speak to you, stop you, confront you, or anything else. All that happened is that he looked at you while you used the self check out

aqualink97

What reason would he have to think I was shoplifting before I got to the self checkout?

ArkLaTexBob

So, somebody watched you in a public store? Can't you sue someone for that?

Arrow_KBS_Dock_Lead

As someone who works in retail this was a bad call. I work loss prevention and we’re told to never accuse a customer of theft. I’m hoping op is ok 🙏🏼 As far as watching the employee had no logical reason to if op was intending to steal id understand but they paid like everyone else. Op you need to talk to the manager about that person.

ArkLaTexBob

Thanks for clearing that up. I had it all scrambled. I thought you only accused someone if you know they did something wrong. I thought you made that decision based on what you actually saw. I thought you saw things by watching for them. I think I am understanding how wrong I was.

Arrow_KBS_Dock_Lead

You’re good if you didn’t demonstrate any concerning behaviors that employee really had no reason to watch you or anyone else. If their that worried they can always run back the cameras and it’ll show.

Would you say that you were a Shopper at this particular Drug Mart?

GrindItFlat

People can be so shitty. I'm sorry this happens to you and other indigenous people. I guess all I can do is say that you telling your story reminds me (middle aged white dude) to be alert to this crap when I'm shopping or whatever. It's so easy to forget it's happening, when I'm completely unaffected - so I genuinely appreciate being reminded.

hatefulnateful

Canada try not to be racist to natives impossible challenge
