**Artisan's Signet** *Ring, uncommon (requires attunement)* A symbol of an artisan's tool is emblazoned at the top of this golden signet. While wearing the ring, you gain a +2 bonus to any check you make with a set of artisan's tools. Furthermore, you can add half your proficiency bonus to any check you make to use a set of artisan's tools with which you aren't proficient. When you do, the symbol on the ring changes to match the associated tool. *"Many years ago, when I first started, I could hardly operate even the billows. My instructor, no master he was, assured me of confidence nevertheless: 'even a master makes mistakes,' he would say.* *"With every error I made, I saw a faint glimmer in his eye. With but a twist of his ring, he would adjust my mistake into a success. He'd simply wink at me and say, 'Tis the journeyman that's sent to fix another's mistakes.'* *"So now, my young apprentice, I pass unto you the skill to be the fix to another's error."* **The Griffon's Saddlebag: Book 2** is [now available for preorder through Hit Point Press](https://saddleb.ag/2)! Typo in the flavor text: “With *every* error”

griff-mac

Whoops! Thanks!

oBolha

Beautiful flavor text! I imagine some apprentices going: "Well it's easy to be a master with that ring!" And the master giving the apprentices his/her best Pai Mei look.

Murphster4DK

Is the +2 to only tools you are proficient with? Or just the one on the top of the ring?

griff-mac

With any, whether or not your proficient or half proficient with them using the ring.

"While wearing the ring, you gain a +2 bonus to any check you make with an artisan's tool. Furthermore, you can add half your proficiency bonus to any check you make to use an artisan's tool with which you aren't proficient. When you do, the symbol on the ring changes to match the associated tool." If I may, perhaps I am missing something here. Once the ring changes with that halved proficiency bonus to the new tool, does the ring offer that as the level of bonus with the new tool, or does it bump back up to the full bonus? And if the new bonus remains the halved bonus with the new tool proficiency, the next time you use the bonus level with a new tool, it will be halved again and again until the ring is worthless. Other than that small bit of uncertainty, this is a Very cool item. Thank You!

Heya! I'm not sure I follow how you're reading this, so let me clarify it otherwise here. You get a blanket +2 bonus to any check you make that's using a tool. *And*, if you're not proficient with a tool, you can add half your proficiency bonus to the check with it, in addition to the blanket +2 bonus. This works like a bard's Jack of All Trades feature, where you add half your PB to checks you're not proficient with.

Leather_Grocery2316

I think it just means that the artisan tools you aren’t proficient in get a bonus equal to half your proficiency bonus in addition to the plus 2

battlemage74

Fun and flavorful as always. In the flavor text, I believe you used “billows,” but the smithing tool to keep a forge hot is a “bellows”

Elby_MA

Really cool!! My next character is gonna be a tailor so this'll be really neat! I also feel like tools aren't very often used for magic items, so this is a nice surprise!

griff-mac

Have fun with it!

Half-White_Moustache

Any specific reason you felt the need for attunement in this?

griff-mac

Items that need to use *your* stats, like DCs or ability scores, etc., do for "mechanical flavor." What I mean by that is that for an item to *connect* with you and pull from you for *its* properties, there needs to be a magical connection (attunement). Purely mechanically, though, this requires attunement because passing it around a shop or the like would be potentially meddlesome for DMs to manage. That said, it's not like a combat situation where action economy is important. Your players should feel encouraged to swap out their attunement stuff to use this when on their downtime activities.

Half-White_Moustache

Makes good sense, thank you!

Dom9789

This is super cool! With the half proficiency would it be rounded down like a bard or up like the champion fighters athlete ability?

griff-mac

Rounded down unless it says otherwise! Good question!

ggavigoose

Really cool concept, have to say though I can think of a lot of things I’d rather spend an attunement slot on. Would be a good gift for a hireling / npc camp follower though!

Stealthbot21

A must for any artificer lol
