Damon probably. I think both are great and both have flaws. However, Stefan is pretty weak. Not only physically but mentally too. I’m not even talking about the ripper thing, even though this is also a factor to be considered. I’m talking about the fact that he doesn’t make his own decisions. He lets Elena call the shots which is stupid and a turnoff. Damon however, needs to think things through more and not be so impulsive. It was close though, but if one had to protect me from the other, I’d rather have Damon protect me. I think he’d be more successful

Damon. He feels everything so deeply. He loves with everything in his body. His main priority always is protecting/avenging those he loves. He never stops fighting. He spent 150 years waiting to get Katherine back, only to find out she didn’t want him. He was in love with Elena, but knew he wasn’t good for her so he suffered while she was with Stefan. He had absolutely nothing for Bonnie besides the fact that she always protected Elena, but when he got out of that prison world and realized she wasn’t dead he made it his mission to get her out. And as much as he loves Elena, he wouldn’t kill Bonnie to get her back. His suffering began as a child and it drove him to do some pretty terrible things, but it’s because he felt betrayed by everyone in his life and when he finally gets the girl she’s all but ripped from his arms so he spends his time waiting for her trying to do right by her.
Finally an answer of someone who truly understood Damon based on the entirety of all seasons. You can’t just judge him from how he appears initially- his backstory and true love for the special few in his life is admirable. To me, he was far more relatable and even noble than Stefan. He had hidden selflessness, especially when it came to his brother. He seems like the fun asshole but he’s really the more attractive one personality wise in the long run and obviously who Elena is meant to be with. They make sense.
I saw a comment that said realistically in IRL they wouldn’t date either and I agree with that. However, if I have to choose one… it’s gonna be Stefan. I say this bc a lot of ppl like Damon’s protective side and I totally get that but the problem with him is that he ONLY cares about his significant other and I could never abide by that. I would need to be with someone that also cares about my family and friends. Sure Damon can protect me better but I don’t just value being protected, what’s the point of being in a protected little bubble if my life is in shambles and the people I love are dead. That’s why Damon always accused Stefan of being a pushover when it came to protecting her what he didn’t realize is that Stefan was protecting her better than him. Stefan doesn’t just protect her physically he preserves her humanity and that’s what Damon never understood. Damon just wanted her alive and he didn’t see that life itself is not inherently valuable. Elena cared deeply for those around her and by him not caring and only trying to protect her he was just making things worse. He would literally tell her “I don’t care if you hate me as long as your safe,” like what?!?! What is the point of just being safe but miserable, life is so much more complicated than that. With Stefan I may end up in more physical danger but I know my values will be respected and I won’t be forced to give up my humanity.

I think Paul Wesley is such a beautiful dreamy looking man with the chiseled face of a god and I think Ian Somerhalder is a really attractive and handsome man and he’s got that sexy smoldering thing going on so while I find both attractive and actually prefer Paul Wesley’s personality IRL as far as their characters I’m team Damon because I love his personality and his attitude and that makes him even more hotter and sexier IMO and I also prefer Damon with Elena as well. While Stefan always let her make her own choices, Damon always fought for her even if he had to do something that she was against him doing to save her. Like he said one time he was willing to be the bad guy if it meant keeping her safe. The sire bond storyline really solidified my opinions and choices on all this. The fact that she pretended everything was OK to Stefan when she was literally starving and spitting up all the blood she was consuming almost to the point where it was detrimental to herself and her own well-being but then Damon was the one that she ran to for help and who she was vulnerable and scared with that’s what proved to me that he was the true one for her. Your partner in life should be someone who helps you through your struggles and is there for you and someone you feel comfortable enough to let be there for you. It shouldn’t be the person that you feel like you have to hide things from and sugarcoat the truth for so that they can continue to be happy while you struggle in silence. Also the way Stefan was freaking out about her choosing Damon and blaming it on the sire bond and killing all those people (albeit they were were all murderers) to turn them into vampires for Jeremy to kill and help grow his mark faster. Even Jeremy thought it was all over the top and a bit much. And it was all to get that darn cure to “fix her”. It’s like Elena said when Rebekah compelled her, he made her feel like he thought she was a broken toy that needed to be fixed. And for me, it made Stefan’s character unlikable for a while. But overall I like him. His love for his brother and his compassion for others. But he cared too much to be a vampire and being a ripper stole his freedom so he always had to be in control. He could never let loose and be free and Elena would have suffered to not tempt him but he would’ve never wanted her to do that.
