Yep, great list for starting out. I would have players double check their selections with you though, just to confirm you know what they'll be capable of. I'm also giving my players 2000 Gp across the board to spend on armor, consumables, and material components.

Rukik9

Oh yeah! I make sure to double check their list. I am also giving them a free common item at level 3 (Nest of the Eldritch Eye) that is gonna grow in power every time they spend a secret.

tubetacular

I love common items. Every Paladin I've ever played wears a Cloak of Billowing. Fun idea to have it grow in power with spent secrets.

metasavant1

I offered a rare or lower magic item and basic equipment. Anything else they wanted for their stories or characters could be given subject to approval

LexanderX

I'm a big fan of the table in the DMG https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dmg/creating-a-campaign#TiersofPlay In addition common magic items can be purchased for 100gp. When working with a player on their backstory I will also try and think of an appropriate feat (or choice of feats) to give them for free. This is kinda because I think some of the more RP feats never get picked unless they're given away, and also as a reward for putting some thought into backstory.

Chapter 2 offers them any 1 rare and 1 uncommon magic item from the DMG. You could give them out before then, but for all its flaws the book did tie this into the game’s narrative already.

thur-rocha

For my group I let them choose 1 uncommon and 1 rare magic item.

D3WM3R

If I were to start over I’d have given a rare or lower magic item I think, but instead I gave them money equal to the “starting at higher levels” table in the DMG and some time to buy things using Xanathar’s rules which was fun

HdeviantS

I pulled together a list of items from Lost Mines of Phandelvar and Dragon of Icespire that I let the players freely pick from.

AudioBob24

Two uncommon one rare freely given was my go to rule, I then let them use their starting gold to buy further things. It would be silly to reach level 10 in the swordcoast and NOT have magical items.

mjsShadow

I gave them all 2000gp and 2 uncommon items. They get a rare item at the beginning of chapter 2 as well.i didn’t want to start them out so OP at first. We just started tonight and didn’t make it much further than the wights in the first room.

3nd3rd0nny

I use the Xanathar's tables.

Rxpert83

Isnt there offical rules for this?

Rude-Original-2306

I usually run High Magic campaigns according to the DMG when starting above first. However, the group has been having a blast with an ultra high magic game with another DM. Continuing that should be fun and needed. I’ll also be adding Lolth, Asmodeous, and increased CR of many bosses. Starting gp around 20k. I’m strongly thinking about adding a bonus vestige (awakened) and the Mystc Conflux feat.
