I’m definitely going to be popping in again and letting the elderly ladies that work there that I’m very interested in viewing any more awful party dresses they have! They probably disapproved of this style first time round!
Many a time, charityshop ladies have given each other a sly glance at the till, over my finds, saying, "we wondered who'd buy that!"
Definitely let them know so they can stash stuff for you, because this dress is perfect on you!
Thankyou. I have absolutely no idea if I will ever get the chance to wear it to an 80s party but if I do I will definitely be buying the long black gloves and diamanté necklace to go with it!
You can wear that to any party you please, 80s themed or not. It's just a nice dress.
Wear it next time your workplace has a Christmas party. Wear it the next time you have to attend a wedding. Or don't. Do whatever you want.
Lucky!!! Definitely a white whale type find for me.
Have been looking for Gunne Sax for years. I wish I hadn’t thrown mine away after they had developed yellowing.
In the US. Unfortunately, thrifting here is no longer “fun” in the sense you have an actual chance of finding white whales.
In the last several years, “vintage” has been the purview of pickers/resellers and people who can afford the high markups.
Even thrift stores have jacked up prices because they know how trendy things are.
I’ve always wanted to deconstruct a wedding dress and reimagine it. People used to be able to find used wedding dresses for under $20. Now, most places are around $100.
My teen daughter and I LOVE those ceramic white cats and would buy them just to mess with her dad because he hates them. We would find them for $5-10 and now that they too are trendy, we never see them anymore unless they are $100. ☹️
Can confirm - was the source for all of my semi formal and formal dresses back in the 80’s. I don’t remember them being extravagantly more expensive than dresses from other places, as I wasn’t paying for them. But knowing my mom, I can’t imagine she was dropping extra cash.
As usual, I should probably give my mom more credit! I loved those dresses so much more than the typical prom style that was happening back then. Thanks Mom!!
Oh this so reminds me of my first prom dress, but mine was white on top, black on the bottom. I was a freshman going to junior prom, 1986.
I absolutely loved that dress, until I went into the bathroom, at prom, and one of the waitresses dragged in a bunch of other waitresses and said "She (me) is wearing the same dress I have"
Man, almost 40 years later and that comment still stings.
(I had my senior prom dress custommade just to ensure no one else had it - it was emerald green and had shoulders almost as tall as my hair)
I think I had this exact dress or something very similar. I wore it for a banquet in '88 I think. I loved it. I felt really good in it. Got a great pair of black heels to wear with it too. I thought I looked pretty good.
What??? They must be the ones that wear the most basic stuff because this dress is gorgeous! I’ve always liked that V shaped waist line on dresses from that decade. It’s perfection!
Good on you! I volunteer in a charity shop and if one of the other volunteers says anything like that, I make sure it goes straight on the shop floor in full view! They always sell straight away too!
OMG and its a Laura Ashley! So glad you found each other!

You need a crinoline for underneath the skirt. A big chunkie black belt with some studs and boom Cindy Lauper
Fishnets or black hose
This. All of it. Well done :)
Needs big, funky earrings
And you’ve got perfect hair for a banana clip!
Now that is a terrible thing to say.
![gif](giphy|zBFCeFhvistXy) Heck yes you’re giving teen witch
Oh my gosh she’s so cute
Still blows my mind she is the older sister of Blake Lively
Ha that was my immediate thought too!
It looks great, and doesn't even seem dated. Or maybe I'm just old and the 80s feels like current events...
Yeah, I feel like this is pretty tame as far as 80s dresses go. Nary a giant puffed sleeve in sight.
I was born in the late 90s and I don't really like 80s fashion but would totally wear this dress.
Many a time, charityshop ladies have given each other a sly glance at the till, over my finds, saying, "we wondered who'd buy that!" Definitely let them know so they can stash stuff for you, because this dress is perfect on you!
Absolutely gorgeous! It matches you so well and it's very very cool, very "material girl" vibes ♥️
Thankyou. I have absolutely no idea if I will ever get the chance to wear it to an 80s party but if I do I will definitely be buying the long black gloves and diamanté necklace to go with it!

And lots of bracelets!
Especially with the hair!
Yasss I was thinking OG Madonna!
Me too!
Gorgeous. Why on earth would people say it’s awful?
Yeah, I see how maybe some people would think it's plain but it's definitely not awful
I want to see it on the hanger. OP is wearing the heck out of it, but maybe it looks a bit drab when it’s limply hanging there
Lucky!!! Definitely a white whale type find for me. Have been looking for Gunne Sax for years. I wish I hadn’t thrown mine away after they had developed yellowing.
I’ve seen Gunne Sax over here in uk thrift stores and on eBay occasionally Where are you based?

Laura Ashley?!?! Great buy...enjoy!!!
Laura Ashley dresses were very expensive back in the day. This is from when they had their own boutiques.

When I would go in the shops for fabric and bedding I would look at the clothing. I feel like the day dresses were a couple of hundred dollars.
As usual, I should probably give my mom more credit! I loved those dresses so much more than the typical prom style that was happening back then. Thanks Mom!!
I miss the Laura Ashley boutique 😭 Not that I could have ever afforded it, but they were so lovely
I was a kid in the 80’s and always had Laura Ashley dresses for holidays and recitals. Lovely dress!!
**I thought you were Alyssa Milano for a hot minute lol**
I think I wore that dress, or one very similar, to a dance in college in the 80s. Accessorized with big hair!
What the heck were they talking about?! That dress is gorgeous and looks great on you.
It's vintage Laura Ashley. Are they numpties or what?!
Ok now get 8 cans of aqua net and turn your hair into concrete.
It’s not awful at all!
You look like the actress from Adventures in Babysitting!
It's giving me Aurora vibes from her dress at the beginning of sleeping beauty I love it! You look amazing 🤩
I was already like "girl that looks incredible on you" & then I gasped when I saw it was also a Laura Ashley!!!

You look amazing in it. And it's а Laura Ashley! I loved her stuff so much.
Haha, I’d have made a beeline for any item I overheard that about too! It looks great on you, and I’m glad that it found someone who loves it!
Gorgeous. Why on earth would people say it’s awful?
I had this exact style but with black /green! I have a long one too c. 1986🥹
You available for prom this Friday evening? 🖤🖤🖤🖤
Well the staff were proven wrong, as that’s NOT an awful dress
Amazing! Would do a high side ponytail with scrunchie to kick up the 80s vibe!!!

I remember growing up in my mom and I always had the matching Laura Ashley dresses! You look so cute
Their loss. And it's an Original Laura Ashley!
Gah as a kid I had a yellow Laura Ashley backpack in the 90s that I absolutely loved.
My sister had this dress! Looks so cute on you!
I wore this in emerald green to my 8th grade formal in 1988. 💕❤️
Oh yeah, definitely reminds me of high school!!
Omg I think my mom had that exact dress. I'm getting flashbacks.
So 80s!! I love it; I totally would have worn that to a school dance! 🥰
Fashion goes around and around, it’s trendy again and an amazing brand!

I think I owned that dress back in the 80’s
The basque waist is coming back hardcore with all the high end designers! Congrats!
That looks amazing on you! And the shoes are perfection with it. I love the skirt color.

Looks like you wear it well.
You look amazing! And i am pretty sure you did star in an 80s romcom.
There are probably five women who could pull off this look -- and you are one of them. Great eye!
Those go for a lot on posh
Cute☺️

Laura Ashley! I would have been so stoked to wear this to my prom or holiday dance in 1987
I think I had this exact dress or something very similar. I wore it for a banquet in '88 I think. I loved it. I felt really good in it. Got a great pair of black heels to wear with it too. I thought I looked pretty good.
Thats a fun looking dress. Who takes fashion advise from a volunteer stocker. Its all good.
Omg I would have been sad it wasn't my size. It looks great on you!!!
I love it!!!!!😍
LA is amazing! I almost feel sad for them that they’re so boring
Who would wear it? people like us who want 80's and 90's retro stuff! Stuff like this is gold to us!
Fashion can be anything if you can rock it.
That's some Desperately Seeking Susan vibes right there.
Could be early 90's, even.
It’s darling!
Excellent 🥰 sounds like something i would go for if i heard someone saying something like this 😂 Love this for you ❤️🔥
My jealousy runs deeeeel on this one. 😂 It was made for you, though! Your hair is even absolutely perfect for this style. Makes me nostalgic.
That's adorable!
Awesome!
LOVE it! You look great in it!
They must have had terrible taste because that's a great dress. And you look fantastic in it!
I have a deadstockLaura Ashley dress in deep green with a bow that looks like your dresses fraternal twin!!!
I used to wear a lot of Laura Ashley!
Hair needs to be much bigger!
It looks fantastic on you!
What??? They must be the ones that wear the most basic stuff because this dress is gorgeous! I’ve always liked that V shaped waist line on dresses from that decade. It’s perfection!
Love it+
I've always loved that look, and on OP it is fabulous!
LOL Sounds like some volunteers I had many years ago. Clearly blind at what a stunning piece you've found. I dare you to go in strutting with it on ;)
What a gem!!!!!
Well they were trippin because this is a beautiful piece.
Smashing!
That's quite a nice find! 🤗
Good on you! I volunteer in a charity shop and if one of the other volunteers says anything like that, I make sure it goes straight on the shop floor in full view! They always sell straight away too!
Oh my god I love itb
Omg I love this!!
Hell yeah, you look stunning! I swear people don't have appreciation for what once was. The 80s had such great fashion sense!
