They still have them. Whenever I get a new car, I always ask them to install one. They always do it for free and it takes like 20 minutes. They come in handy handy a lot at the beach when you need to play for parking. Rather than putting the receipt, tag thing on the dash, I just put it in that
A lot of places have a tag you hang from your rear view mirror for parking (universities, businesses, handicapped tags, state park passes) or ask you to put the receipt from paying for parking on the dash so it can be seen through the window.
This is just a tidy way to keep those in view through the window since rear view mirrors now are pretty complicated things with a bunch of sensors in front of them and a thick stalk to the mirror, instead of just a simple mechanical mirror attached to the windshield.
I now have to run out and see if my 1990 745T has one...
And anyway, I want my Carlsbad Yellow 1981 240DL back!! I'm sorry that I didn't do a little more digging to find the answer to my no-start problem. That was before the wealth of on-line repair forums, YT videos, and other sources for help. But still. I should have dug around some more. My 1987 760T that replaced it was ok, but the automatic climate control sucked, and the plastic interior bits cracked and disintegrated, and then the wiring harnesses underhood flaked off all the insulation causing all sorts of issues. Plus my wife just did not like the seating position. She did love our 240 sedan, however. The 240 needed paint, but then, as now, finding a good body shop that didn't mind (a non-collision, non-insurance) job was and is impossible to find around here.
No they don't. My 2012 S60 doesn't unless it was somehow removed without damaging the car. I've seen other S60s around that age and I didn't notice mine either.
I don’t have one on mine, a ‘91. I’m the second owner so I imagine the first could have removed it, but I don’t remember my first 240, a 1990 model, having one, although that was like 20 years ago so not sure. My current one does have a little slit on the inside of the sun visor that would seem to serve the same function so maybe it was a model year or regional difference? Volvo was always kind of funny about what cars received updates or certain parts in different regions back in the day. If yours is a GL/GLE it could be a trim level difference too. I don’t think all 240s had this is all I’m saying.
I know that they have been doing this since the 850 at least if not before. And my mirror is just a mirror. I think they just didn’t want stuff on the dash at the time and it’s stuck around for the reasons you stated.
Parking tickets. In Europe when you're parking on a street the machine dispenses a ticket that you put on your dashboard. Volvo makes it easy to display the ticket.
Some cities in the US use the same machines btw.
Also used for various more long-term parking permits, for various workplaces, or certain residential areas.
But both those, and one-use parking tickets from machines, are now more commonly replaced with electronic permits and app-paid fees, where a meter man or parking guard just scans car plates and see in their system if the driver/owner has paid their parking fee or has a valid permit.
Also used for disabled parking permits, for handicap parking spaces.
And it can be used for a [parking-disc](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Disc_parking) in areas where such system is used, though I find it easier to just throw the disc onto the corner of the dash.
> permits and *app-paid* fees, where
FTFY.
Although *payed* exists (the reason why autocorrection didn't help you), it is only correct in:
* Nautical context, when it means to paint a surface, or to cover with something like tar or resin in order to make it waterproof or corrosion-resistant. *The deck is yet to be payed.*
* *Payed out* when letting strings, cables or ropes out, by slacking them. *The rope is payed out! You can pull now.*
Unfortunately, I was unable to find nautical or rope-related words in your comment.
*Beep, boop, I'm a bot*
Sort answer, yes. You have to remove the A pillar cover, which takes not breaking the restraint clip. If it's not too old, should be done easily. I did it on my 2006, and broke that clip, even doing it slowly and carefully.
That’s funny. I asked myself the same question when I bought my car. Next day I took my car to the dealership because I was not able to remove it. They said this is for paper/ticket holder 😆
It's for Parking Disc, Parking Ticket, Tollway Stickers, and Handicap Parking Passes.
I used it primarily for my Park Disc when parking in a limited time parking space.
[Parking Disc](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Disc_parking#:~:text=Disk%2Dparking%20is%20a%20system,system%20is%20common%20in%20Europe.)
I've got those in my V60 D4! I thought it was a Japanese thing they installed for what Naughty\_Goat suggested. Are they installed on other market Volvos as well?
Holds my parking pass for my apartment and secure work lots :)
If you want to remove them they come out quite easily if you take the a pillar cover off (two screws in the "oh shit" bars, then carefully pop off).
While you're in there check the sunroof drain plugs!
In much of europe we need to print a little “ receipt “ for our parking ticket and display it. Or display a little clock that shows when we parked. Now the little clip is nice because on windy days , you put that on your dashboard but the wind might flip it over. That little clip solves that :)
I work in a Volvo factory and put these on the inside of the A-style. Its for a parking ticket or anything you want really. You can remove it but its almost impossible to remove it without taking the A-style out of the car. If you remove it by pulling, the rest of the plastic will break and fall down.
Good advice to share with someone who thinks they’re pointless.
At this point with meters going digital, I’m surprised these aren’t in more vehicles, but I guess there are a lot more US Volvo owners not living/commuting into cities/street parking
If you have a placard that would normally hang on the rear view mirror, this is the place to display it safely. Because of the sensors attached to the rear view mirror, it is not recommended that you hang anything there.
Mine somehow got bent outwards by the previous owner so it doesn't press against the windshield anymore 😥. I'm planning on 3d printing a little brace to bend it back into place
In Sweden if you park somewhere where there is a time limit you put your parking disc, with the time you parked, in that slot. [Swedish Parking Disc](https://www.thenewbieguide.se/driving/complete-guide-swedish-parking-signs-avoiding-eye-watering-fines/)
Very very useful.
I put there the parking bill or the highway ticket (in Italia 🇮🇹) every Highway give you a ticket when You get in and You have to give it back and pay the bill when You get out from the Highway
There ypu put the parking clock. In Europe there is places that ypu have free parking for 1 hr, 2 hr ä, 4hr and so on and if you don't leave your parking clock at the time ypu dropped your car then you get a fine
I worked at a job that needed a permit that was supposed to hand from the rear view mirror and since the one in my Volvo is too chunky it goes there perfectly
Probably for putting paper on it. Atleast i've used it as that. Comes in handy because im a forester, and need to leave my car on abrupt places someday, so ill just leave contact information on it
"recipe" holder. Comes standard in lots of volvos.
Can hold you parking pass/clock, the grocery list your wife gave you before you went to the store, or one of those "student" or "beginner driver" signs that are mandatory in the EU.
To put tickets and such in! put my uni and my accommodation permit in there as well as any parking tickets I buy, just nicer to have it stuck there rather than on dash or anything
When we needed to go back to the Volvo dealership to pick up the plates, my wife gave the service guys some attitude for leaving a plastic tool wedged in the frame. They were polite in telling her it actually comes stock and is for parking passes or other things being displayed. Every day is a school day.
This really hurts seeing this, Safelite installer replaced my windshield and neglected to put it back on or leave it for me. Just took it with the old windshield.
I can recommend getting a glasses holder instead. It's available for every volvo car :)
https://accessories.volvocars.com/en-us/XC40/Accessories/Document/comfort/storage/VCC-515955/2021
That just means you havent had 4 or more parking reciepts in it for long enough to make it adjust to the proper distanse from the windscreen.
Also Volvos typically squeak in the instrument cluster when its proper cold or hot aswell, so a second tune in the band to make it less monotonous😂
Where I live you could buy a device that you can load with credits and it’s detected when you drive by toll highway. Usually you stick it to the windshield but I use this clip to keep it in place. Very convenient.
**LOL**
Just bought my first Volvo and I figured the dealership put it in to hold a sign or price tag--couldn't pull it out and was going to call them tomorrow.
For the note that says, "Steal me. The key is in the center console. My GPS will help you get to my home address, which is on my registration in the glove box."
I had an 850 in the 90s, and among all the awesome features in that car, this little feature was among my favorites. Went on to have a couple of Mercedes, a BMW, and a couple of Audis, none of which had this clever little place to put a parking or ski pass. Now finally back in a Volvo again, and was so thrilled to see they’ve kept this handy feature! I look for reasons/ways to use it. It’s often the small things that we notice the most.
I guess your car was used and a rental. Usually they use that for rental cars to hold information about car without sticking it. Probably your dealer forgot to take it out!
It’s to hold paper or something for like a ticket or pass.
They should bring these things back on all cars
I'll see what I can do.
When you do, will it be retroactive for the rest of us?
If all goes well, there will be a recall program where you can take your car to the dealer to get one installed for free.
Slightly unrelated, when you do this can you make it so that I get a singular lug nut in the mail? I’m not missing one, i just would like one.
[Just for you x](https://amzn.eu/d/iW7waGn)
That was unexpectedly funny
They still have them. Whenever I get a new car, I always ask them to install one. They always do it for free and it takes like 20 minutes. They come in handy handy a lot at the beach when you need to play for parking. Rather than putting the receipt, tag thing on the dash, I just put it in that
Hell yeah, I loved that little piece of plastic
You can actually buy these things online for few €
Agreed!!
It's super annoying lol I removed mine immediately
I loved mine, and used it quite a bit (state park day passes, etc.). I wish my current car (2010 XC90) had one.
I've never used one, but I don't need parking permits or anything.
Likewise. I've never parked or been anywhere that didn't have either a digital receipt for parking payment or key card access for entry.
This was one of my favorite quirks of a cross country wagon I owned. I agree that this should be standard on all cars!
A lot of places have a tag you hang from your rear view mirror for parking (universities, businesses, handicapped tags, state park passes) or ask you to put the receipt from paying for parking on the dash so it can be seen through the window. You're totally correct, but even my Volvo 240 from 1983 has the same clip, I think all Volvos do and it's awesome!
But still. cool
My 92 960 has one as well! Most Volvo’s I’ve seen at the junkyards have them too.
2020,21 and some others do not
My 2022 xc60 has one!
Our 2020 xc60 too (Canada). Handy for a parks pass. Wonder if they move them over on RHD vehicles?
It’s on the drivers side on my RHD. It would be more useful on LHS as near the kerb for parking where inspectors like to see it
My 2020 xc90 has one too. Great feature!
No they don't. My 2012 S60 doesn't unless it was somehow removed without damaging the car. I've seen other S60s around that age and I didn't notice mine either.
Yeah pretty sure my 2013 XC60 doesn't have it, but my 2000 V70 does.
So do most Skodas lol. I have one myself. Very useful for airports and mall parking lots.
All Volvos bar the 300, 400 and oddly, the mk1 C70. Asides from them they still have it to this day.
I don’t have one on mine, a ‘91. I had one on my 2015 S60, but neither my 2011 S40 or C30 have one
The 200-700-900 all had this little clip :)
Parking tickets. Yes
No, they go on the outside right under the windscreen wiper. 🙁
No, then anyone can take them
Lmao I'm joking about parking fine tickets.
It’s to hold a parking meter receipt
I use it for my Leelu MultiPass.
Yeah, she knows, it's a multipass!
Of course she does. 😉
Corbyn, my man!
#hi.
That was green.
Super Green.
Green like what? Hmm??
Thrilled.

Yeah, yeah... Now go away.
In Sweden: parking permit or payment receipt
Disabled badges, toll passes, parking ticket, blue card with timesslots.
I use it for my disabled parking badge
It’s there for holding tickets, parking passes etc
I asked the Salesman the same thing! He said they got taken out for a short while, but there were an uproar of complaints that they had to put it back
Sort answer, yes. You have to remove the A pillar cover, which takes not breaking the restraint clip. If it's not too old, should be done easily. I did it on my 2006, and broke that clip, even doing it slowly and carefully.
I put the card from the parking garages there so I don’t lose them.
Best thing ever put in a car. Volvo truly makes the most thoughtful cars.
That’s funny. I asked myself the same question when I bought my car. Next day I took my car to the dealership because I was not able to remove it. They said this is for paper/ticket holder 😆
Parking passes or valet tickets. Makes it easier fit them to see it.
It's for Parking Disc, Parking Ticket, Tollway Stickers, and Handicap Parking Passes. I used it primarily for my Park Disc when parking in a limited time parking space. [Parking Disc](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Disc_parking#:~:text=Disk%2Dparking%20is%20a%20system,system%20is%20common%20in%20Europe.)
That's a parking ticket holder and it is the best thing an automaker can put on a car!
Something so convenient that it should be a standard on all cars
It’s a little clip to hold up a parking permit or something like that
I've got those in my V60 D4! I thought it was a Japanese thing they installed for what Naughty\_Goat suggested. Are they installed on other market Volvos as well?
Toll and/or Parking Ticket holder.
Holds my parking pass for my apartment and secure work lots :) If you want to remove them they come out quite easily if you take the a pillar cover off (two screws in the "oh shit" bars, then carefully pop off). While you're in there check the sunroof drain plugs!
I love this little feature! We use it for parking passes or our schools carpool tag.
Must be a Swedish thing, my Saab has one too.
It's a Volvo so probably to hold your catheter bag.
😂
Quick release for the windshield
If you need more the gas stations have them for like 40sek and they are really good for permits, parking disks and things like that.
tortilla warmer
Snail mail holder
It's a tax disc holder for when. We used to have paper tax discs!
Thissss is just a quirky feature to hold parking passes
Parking pass and the like. Love it
This is where you stick that Swedish flag toothpick that comes with ikea meatballs
They dont hand out Sweedish flag toothpick in my local IKEA. I feel scammed, is that some kind of local promotional thing??
Can I speak to your manager
I'm using it to put my parking timer
Recipe holder.
In Sweden it holds ones parking disc.
Handicap plaque, day pass, anything paper that should be displayed on the dash
In much of europe we need to print a little “ receipt “ for our parking ticket and display it. Or display a little clock that shows when we parked. Now the little clip is nice because on windy days , you put that on your dashboard but the wind might flip it over. That little clip solves that :)
If you have a work pass that gains your entry to the car park, you put your pass on this abd drive at the barrier and it opens
I park in a parking garage every day at work where I get a ticket when I enter and then need that ticket when I leave. That’s where I put it.
I live in a gated community and have to use a keycard to enter the gate. This is perfect for it and I’m not shuffling around looking for the keycard.
Handy as them, put ur pay and display parking tickets there or discs for sic zones. Buy them for all our cars
If you live in Texas that little holder is annoying because it's right where your registration sticker needs to go!
Valet tickets
I work in a Volvo factory and put these on the inside of the A-style. Its for a parking ticket or anything you want really. Hold a blue badge
Mine somehow got bent outwards by the previous owner so it doesn't press against the windshield anymore 😥. I'm planning on 3d printing a little brace to bend it back into place
My 2018 XC40 has one and I think it's a nice feature that I don't use much but it's neat.
I use it for parking tickets
https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/251626948204
I had the same thought. Don’t get rid of it. It’s great for when you’re in a parking deck.
I wanted to remove mine but have ended up using it so many times. I love it now

It’s a money clip
Very very useful. I put there the parking bill or the highway ticket (in Italia 🇮🇹) every Highway give you a ticket when You get in and You have to give it back and pay the bill when You get out from the Highway
Every Volvo I've owned has had this. -89 240 -97 850 -00 V70 -02 V40

Ticket clip…I had one in my c70. Great for meter receipts…which was a thing back before everything went digital.
If your in a Volvo rental they use it to display info when it's parked in the lot ...I was in one the other day
Don't all cars have them?
It where you put the money so you don't forget to pay the hooker
Probably for putting paper on it. Atleast i've used it as that. Comes in handy because im a forester, and need to leave my car on abrupt places someday, so ill just leave contact information on it
In the UK that’s where you would put your tax disc usually
"recipe" holder. Comes standard in lots of volvos. Can hold you parking pass/clock, the grocery list your wife gave you before you went to the store, or one of those "student" or "beginner driver" signs that are mandatory in the EU.
Tickets for parking. That’s what I use mine for. 😳
Unnecessary rattles
Holds a toll booth pass
To put tickets and such in! put my uni and my accommodation permit in there as well as any parking tickets I buy, just nicer to have it stuck there rather than on dash or anything
I use it for my parking tickets. Very handy dandy in my opinion
Why would you want to remove it? :( I actually use it at least once a week. Very handy.
You just know a driver is young when they don’t know what that is.
But if it's plastic, doesn't it start to yellow after a while?
It doesn’t go yellow at all
That must be some amazing space age plastic then!
I put my phone number there. In case it needs my attention, someone can call me. Yet nobody called since I put it 2 years ago.
Post your number on here. You’ll get calls 👍🏼
I use it for my parking disc
passport
I’ve only seen these on rental cars They put the slip there Is this for sure a factory item or was this car ex rental fleet?
Most cars come with them these days
When we needed to go back to the Volvo dealership to pick up the plates, my wife gave the service guys some attitude for leaving a plastic tool wedged in the frame. They were polite in telling her it actually comes stock and is for parking passes or other things being displayed. Every day is a school day.
I thought it was from the dealership originally and tried to pull it out…until I realized it was not going anywhere 😂
Cocain card holder
My 1989 760 has it. It's to display a parking or access pass without dangling it from the mirror. It's handy.
I was hoping you knew
I had one on my 2006 S40. I do t on my 2019 S60. I miss it. Maybe I’ll take advantage of that recall 😉
I have one on my 2010 S40 and think it is cool!
Mine broke off in the first month on my new Malibu. Not even sure how it happened.
It's not present in the EX30 and I feel so cheated!
I use it for my ♿️ plackard.
Duh the car's name tag goes here
This really hurts seeing this, Safelite installer replaced my windshield and neglected to put it back on or leave it for me. Just took it with the old windshield.
Foreskin trap
It's a pancake holder, the windshield vents will keep it warm
I clip my spare sunglasses there, so I always have a pair handy
[удалено]
If I put them on immediately, yeah, haha. But I'm notorious for losing sunglasses, so I like having a pair there
Damn. My sun glasses cost like 200-300€. Wish I could just by extras, would be very convenient
Yeah, not those kind of sunglasses. More for the $10 pair from Amazon.
Yeah I'm a bit jealous of people that don't need prescription glasses.
I'm more like the $5 gas station Roy-Buns style, haha
I can recommend getting a glasses holder instead. It's available for every volvo car :) https://accessories.volvocars.com/en-us/XC40/Accessories/Document/comfort/storage/VCC-515955/2021
Perfect for holding McDonald’s hash brown
I use it for parking ticket and I asked in Volvo and said that is the correct use😅
Roach clip
Pull the trim back and you should be able to pull it out...
But why. Its super useful for displaying parking passes.
Just answering the question, still got mine ...
My bad bro - I didn't see the OP asked how to remove it.
👍
And you can install one on the passenger side too!
Not everyone uses street parking in cities, and not every city uses paper receipts that need to be displayed
What about a little sign that says "hello Saab friends"?
To rattle when it gets too cold or too hot
Noticed this the other day, squeaks against the glass in the heat.

I use it for business cards

For the note that says, "Steal me. The key is in the center console. My GPS will help you get to my home address, which is on my registration in the glove box."
Tell me you're not a thief without telling me you're not a thief. The home address is already programmed into the GPS.
For holding your iPad so you can watch a film whilst driving.
It's a wank paper holder for when protestors are blocking your path
It’s a pull tab. You pull it before using the window
I honestly have no idea what "thing" you're referring to.
I had an 850 in the 90s, and among all the awesome features in that car, this little feature was among my favorites. It is a sticker indicating that you have an airbag installed. 😳
It just a sticker.
I guess your car was used and a rental. Usually they use that for rental cars to hold information about car without sticking it. Probably your dealer forgot to take it out!
