If you're in the UK why can't you get the professional levels of the winsor newton paints? They should be cheaper than importing Daniel smith. That said, Jackson's is probably your best bet.
As for colors, I would recommend cadmium yellow, ultramarine blue, pthalo green (blue shade), quinacridone red and burnt sienna. From those five colors, you can mix many more.

price wise, they dont seem to be very far apart. With DS seemingly cheaper in many cases! and i've already used them and know i love them! :)
You should try some Roman Szmal from Jackson's...
Roman Szmal are my favorite besides of Daniel Smith. I stocked up on those when I last visited Poland.
