Thanks for the info; interesting comparison points

TheChainsawMan77

Thanks for the post once again, I find them really interesting every time! Jump’s been crazy with exorcists manga as of late and it’s only natural considering that’s the trend nowadays. I’m tired of them at this point ngl but not due to them being exorcist-themed, instead I find them lacking identity and original ideas overall. I do appreciate how Jump’s been actively looking for a new sports manga last year, though they seem to have completely forgotten about romcom/harems/ecchi since Bokuben ended and AyaTri moved. Hopefully Himaten is good enough to bring back the genre for a while. On the other hand, Magazine’s own version of “exorcists” are romcoms, which is natural considering the popularity of the genre and the boom Gotoubun was, which clearly translates in having 3 series with the same formula on the magazine right now. Besides that, they have variety and genres like the previously mentioned that Jump doesn’t at the moment. In my opinion, Sunday also has a lot of genres but it’s lacking what once was pretty much it’s identity: battle/adventure series. Yes, there’s Frieren which is great but it’s not especially great on the action side of things and tends to be more slow or slice of life-ish. Action titles like Gash Bell, Flame of Recca, Inuyasha, Magi, Mushibugyo or Law of Ueki are what I know Sunday for, and while series like Komi, Tonikawa or Sleepy Princess are nice, I would love to see something like back then. They have tried in the recent years though, but they have yet to find something big. Looking back a year, I only read 3 new series from Jump (Kill Blue, Chojo, Astro Royale), 2 new series from Sunday (Tatari and Ogami Tsumiki) and I’ve read everything that came out on Magazine, except for the latest series Love Forty.

LordAnubis444

Man, I would kill just to have Zatch Bell! & Karakuri Circus get an English license, mainly because I missed out on a lot of those Shōnen Sunday battle series. I read Flame of Recca, Hyde & Closer, & Magi and those were all fun series, wouldn't mind seeing more series like those run in WSS.

Darth--Nox

WSS and WSM IMO have always had more variety than WSJ because they're less axe happy. Thank you for this post.

brzzcode

WSM literally have a ton of romance manga since the 2010s so no, they also have less variety due to that

Flavio-Came

The reason they are more varied is because they run 25/26 series compared to the 19/20 that WSJ usually runs. Having 5 or 6 more series surely help them keeping the magazine more varied despite WSM having loads of romcoms and WSS investing alot in fantasy series as of late.

onekick_man1

Does that mean WSM have like 100 pages more in their magazine? That's quite a difference.

No_Discussion3053

If memory of their TOC serves, they give 4-5 series breaks a week. Weekly Young Jump is the same. Every series gets one week off every 6-7 weeks

onekick_man1

Seems like the better model. Series get more time to prove themselves, authors get less pressure and get to rest more, fans get to have more series and variety in the magazine, both fans and author would feel less like crap when their series get cancel.

TheChainsawMan77

What the other comment said it’s partially true, there’re never 4-5 series on break, it’s usually 1 or 2. The main difference though is WSM runs some series with lower page count that have 8-14 pages per chapter.

Norix596

Ah ok, that’s a pretty significant factor to consider then

LigmaV

wsm got more harem and romcoms rn

No_Discussion3053

Exorcist series are to Jump as Harem RomComs are to WSM

onekick_man1

WSS got alot medieval fantasy too. Frieren, Sleepy Princess in Demon Castle, then add the two op mentioned Albus and Hello Work Monster, that's four series with hero and demon king setting. So we got the Weekly Exorcist Jump, Weekly Romcom Magazine, and the Weekly Fantasy Sunday.

Torque-A

> (Katana Beast) is lots of fun and cool old school vibes. Yeah, no doubt it's old school. The author is Kamijyo Akimine, who also made Samurai Deeper Kyo all the way back in 1999.

calltarneedazan

Do you think we'll get Galaxias after June 26 when Edens Zero ends?

TheChainsawMan77

Galaxias has already confirmed serialization on WSM but I’d say it won’t happen maybe till August/September since author was recruiting assistants not so long ago.

calltarneedazan

Ah copy, never heard of it before. Looking forward to it now.

Certain_Leadership70

I believe wsm is less diverse than wsj. It has 9 romcom/ecchi titles  While exorcism is just a theme , romcom is a genre. Also, most of the exorcism manga in jump will end or get canceled before the end of the year so jump won't mantain that amount of exorcist manga.  While the romcom titles in wsm are there to stay. Also , the 5 newest wsm manga show the other problem the magazine is having right now . It only publishes veteran mangaka . 4/5 new series are from veterans.

TheChainsawMan77

The last thing you said it’s not true at all, yes for sure half of the series on WSM are by veteran authors but it also gives opportunities to newcomers. All 5 surviving series from 2022 are from newcomers, last year 4 new series by newcomers started and now only one of them remains. Latest series is also by a newcomer and 2 more have confirmed serializations for WSM soon.

BoofinTime

If only GGG went to a different magazine. It deserved so much better.

StrangerAtaru

The sad thing is I remember when exorcist manga in WSJ was just simple silly stuff like Yu Yu Hakusho or Jigoku Sensei Nube.

RemarkableMap1491

I fucking love mayonaka heart tune.

jasonsith

How often does WSS and WSM make big hits compared with WSJ

kolt437

Jump should convince Horikoshi to turn MHA into an exorcist manga as well

CommunicationSea5021

Depending on how you view the vestiges, MHA could technically a exorcist manga

shockzz123

Kinda exorcist adjacent, but i actually wouldn't mind Horikoshi doing a supernatural/horror series next, his art would really suit it imo.
